I love your disclaimers--watching you just go for it has given me the courage to do so, too. As you say, at the end of the day, it's just fabric if it doesn't work out, and i always learn from my mistakes. And if it does work out, well, I've made something great to add to my growing wardrobe of all mix-and-match-garments that I love (which, thanks to you, at this time, includes 1 Poppy pinafore, 3 Fleur pinafores, an Ava blouse, and is about to include at least 3 Nell autumn/Winter long-sleeve tops made out of French terry :) ). And I have more corduroy and linen for another pinafore and tops awaiting my attention on my cutting table...

Love the cat antics. It is educational to see the process. We all need to learn the how-tos and how to get there.
Have you ever snipped Georgie’s tail by accident?

My husband says I am 'like a dog with a bone' trying to get things right. I never give up and it seems you don't either. I am not sewing clothes these days but I like making things with material. Did I hear your cat's name correctly, is it Geordie? Well is seems like he is there to keep you company and help when he can. I can hold that bit down with my tail mum if you'd like? Keep being creative Jayne, you do a good job. 🥰

Very cool, it was interesting to watch you translate your sketch into a pattern. Dart manipulation is really fascinating, just altering one aspect of a pattern can result in so many variations.

Thanks for sharing your creative process! I love this type of content as I also create from an idea in my head. I did a couple of courses in pattern construction long ago, made my own blocks for top and skirt, but I rarely use them. Either I copy and tweak a RTW garment or I use a similar pattern and tweak it. I can see that it probably would have been easier for you to create this blouse if you’d used draping on your manequin, but I never do that myself either. It’s a whole other school of pattern construction.
When I saw your struggles with the sleeve band I thought of an other way. You could make the sleeve longer, hem it with a narrow hem, add the gathering stitches a couple of cm (or whatever) to create a ruffle. And to cover the gathering stitches you sew the white band on top. If you make the band double you would probably stop the blue fabric to show through as well. To make it easier you can also do this before you sew the sleeve seam.
An other suggestion I have regarding the neck ruffle. If you put the ruffle in to a collarstand it will be more upright, if you see what I mean. In the early 80th I made some blouses and also my sister’s weddingdress with that type of ”victorian” neck ruffle and they were constructed like that. Thanks again for sharing! ❤️

What a lovely design, Jayne! 😘 It looks as though your button holes worked out well, too. I’m picking out a failed buttonhole this morning. 😂 Three beautiful test buttonholes and then the third of seven on the shirt really messed up!

Your finished blouse is pretty on you. Having buttons up the back would not be a good idea for me. I would not be able to button it up by myself. This is a very nice usable sample. It would have to be a little longer to hide the top of my pants and skirts (which never lay flat on me). It looks comfortable.
I wonder how many of us who love to sew at home have cats? I have trained my cats to pay attention to a small spray bottle filled with plain tap water. Usually just setting that bottle on my work table gets their attention quickly. It may be the spray of water; but, I think it was the sound the bottle makes, that got their attention the first time I used it. Many of the tools I use are sharp. I don't want my cats getting injured; and, I don't want to be injured because one of my cats took my mind off what I was doing. The only other option I have is to lock them out of my sewing room (which doesn't make them, or me, happy).

I love this process that you go through. And it was so much fun to watch it. I feel like I would go through the same way if I had half the talent that you do. The top turned out really nice. I think for an optional version I would put a small band of white at the end of the top so when you leave it out of your jeans, you get that additional color block. But the way you’ve made it here is absolutely perfect in my mind. Thank you so much for doing this for all of us.
