  • The recent announcement from Pimax of the impending release of the Crystal Light VR Headset is some of the most exciting VR news this year in my opinion. In this video I outline my thoughts on if you should pre-order. Plus a look at Aerosoft Lukla Airport, one of the 10 most dangerous airports in the world.

In this video I express my personal opinion, others have, and I have the right to do so as well. I don't endorse or recommend a product for people to spend their hard earned cash on without having tested the product first hand. I know I'm old school, but that is just the way I am.

I believe, every product in the world offers you a time period to try out the product and if you don’t like it you can return it for a full refund. If you noticed a lot of people that purchased the very expensive Apple Vision Pro headset returned it after trying it out. Those that liked it kept it. There is No Risk!

Thank you Mark, age equals wisdom.
Yes, so many are saying the Crystal Light will be amazing, it'll be great, etc, but they are going by their own experiences with the existing Crystal, this will be a whole new animal. Pimax has to redesign a LOT of the new HMD, out goes pretty much all the electronics of the existing Crystal to be replaced by new circuitry of PCVR only specs. So there is a LOT of room to get things wrong, even though Pimax has a lot of experience with PCVR, they have made serious mistakes in the past. Your advice to wait and see to make sure the new HMD will be a good one is golden. Too many channels are hyping this thing as if it's already been tried and tested whereas it hasn't, no one to my knowledge has tried one yet, don't even know if they are being manufactured yet.
I'm also a older guy (65), and have become skeptical... when something sounds too good to be true, it normally is until proven otherwise.

Pimax had an opportunity, with this headset, to grab a high number of first-time PCVR users, on top of anyone looking to upgrade. However, in my opinion, the rather bulky external design may well present too large a barrier to that particular audience.
OK, I know looks aren't everything, but if you are trying to convince "pancake users" to stick something on their heads for hours, for the first time, I'd have been tempted to err more towards the smaller end of the size scale.

I have an adequate alternate VR headset to do my SIM racing games with the Quest 3 connected via USB Link Cable. I do not see any problems so far running all my racing games. But still learning the Quest 3 operations. And I now have my first wireless VR headset to experiment around with.
All I can say is things are looking a little better now for affordable VR where we don't have to spend over 1500 dollars for a headset. I will be awaiting many Video reviews on these new PCVR headsets.

The problem with this analysis is the pimax crystal is already a proven good headset the lite verison is just a cheaper version of what we already know is a good headset now just a very affordable price, your taking a very small risk by pre-ordering this headset if you have the funds and are in the market for a good headset you'd be taking a bigger risk by not pre-ordering the 30$ (refundable btw deposit) and then it being on backorder etc. for an extended period of time, like when the valve index first released for example.

  • @10KenHall
    @10KenHall Місяць тому +1

You make valid points here Mark, but I have recently upgraded my system to include a 4090 and the fastest intel CPU, 6 gig clock speed, my Reverb G2 works fine, though I must admit HP have replaced the headset and cable 3 times since day one purchase, I considered the Quest 3 but after seeing it on a mates system I would rather wait for something a bit higher in resolution.
Pimax have had their issues in the past but at least they are listening to what the average simmer wants, I don’t need controllers or pass through, I just want a higher resolution with bigger sweet spot and a wider field of view. And at a price I can afford.
My gut feeling is that this headset will fly if the shelf and there could be big delays for those who hesitate.
Pimax is taking a chance in providing what we want and I want to show support, it’s a two way street, I supported 2020 from day one when many were sceptical, likewise I will grab 2024 day one.
I consider we are lucky to be in an era where flight simulators are improving at unprecedented rates.
Sometimes you just gotta role the dice.
    Cheers
    Ken

I would like to understand what is meant by 2160 to 2880 (per eye upscaling)? We’ve always been able to software upscale and haven’t been restricted to such stated parameters (between two specific resolutions). What is different / new here with the Pimax Light? Is this hardware upscaling? Or just having the upscaling software built into Pimax Client? I’d appreciate an explanation if anyone knows.

Thanks for your sensible and common sense advice mate. I'd love to preorder the Crystal Light without controllers, with SteamVR faceplate, since I already have 2x2.0 base stations and Index controllers that I use with my Vive Pro1. However, I agree that it's best to wait for some independant user reviews. Much better advice than some UA-camrs with affiliate links, who are already recommending it over the Q3, lol!
I currently have both the Q3 and QPro. Both work great with msfs with my i913900k/rtx4090 PC and the official Link cable connected to my z790mb usb 3.2 type-c port using 650mbps encoding bitrate. I still prefer my QPro because it has better colours and local dimming. The higher Q3 screen resolution doesn't seem to make much difference in overall clarity, to me anyway. I am hoping that the Crystal Light with local dimming, much higher screen resolution, and DisplayPort connection, will improve msfs clarity, without taking a big hit on performance. Time will tell I guess. Thanks again for your vids mate and best cheers.

I want the tactile feedback of flipping switches and turning knobs and not having to rely on muscle memory or using the mouse in VR. Why Pimax doesn't speak about their DP numbers...?
Nvidia still on Display Port 1.4a... Fail...to displays 2X9Mp at 90hz....without DSC and compression...
    AMD Display Port 2.1...Win...
Cristal Light for a just heavy "screen helmet" without Gigwifi, without ram, without processors, without battery...So it's quite expensive with VAT...

Good video. It will be okay I assume, but the price is still a joke for what they actually offer.
No eye tracking, distortion issues and questionable ergonomics, poor sound solution or having to upgrade to the DMAS module, local dimming costs 200 extra...
It's really just okay if anything, not great.
If you calculate the bill of hardware this headset will make Pimax a ton of cash. It's actually way cheaper than a Quest 3 in production - yet they sell it for way more - on average actually double the cost.
But hey, I guess it's understandable for all those influencers to spread their referral links around. Who would've expected different... or common sense.

The Hype Train is Real! 🚂 Wait too long and you won’t be able to get one. It will be unavailable and people ‘’Scaplers’’ that are able to get it will be selling it for way more than MSRP. Sometimes being the first to get the product pays off. I remember seeing people paying well over $3K for a RTX3090 when those cards came out. It happened with the RTX4090 as well. It will happen when the RTX5090 cards drop. I pre-ordered the Crystal Light with Face Plate and no controllers with local dimming. Because, I want to be that person that has it. Just in case Pimax isn’t able to make a lot of units right away. Watch people/ Scalpers will try to make money off anything. It happened with the PlayStation 5 when it launched and it is happening with the PlayStation Portal right now. I rather catch the Train 🚂 than be left waiting for the next one 🚊 😉👌🙋🏻‍♂️🫶

Good luck to you, I hope Pimax gets it right, I have other HMDs to use, so no rush here, rather wait to make sure the thing is worth getting in the first place. If the situation you described happens (no units available for a long time), I won't loose sleep over it since the next greatest thing since sliced bread is just around the corner. (always seems to work out that way).
I hope you get a great functioning unit that will make you happy. :)

@jackr.749 Thanks, I appreciate it. It isn't something anyone really needs. But, I am excited to see what 35 ppd looks like. I have a Quest 3 with the 25ppd, and I think it is beautiful. So I can only imagine how this one will look. That 5090 card is what I am most excited to get. I may be building me another PC here shortly. Pimax got it right, offering the best feature of the Pimax Crystal in a more affordable headset without all that extra stuff not really needed. I like how I won't have to recharge any batteries. This will be my main PCVR headset that will be replacing my Pimax5KSuper.

Nothing wrong with jumping in early if you’ve got the discretionary income to fund it. US$700 is not inexpensive, and a very significant purchase for many. For those in that category then perhaps caution should be a consideration.

@@SimHangerFS Yes, $1,000 to drop on a Virtual Reality headset with the best looking visuals is something you don’t really need. But, None of these VR headsets are something you really need. I would much rather buy this Crystal Light for $899 + taxes vs that Apple Vision Pro for $3,599 + taxes. But, I believe the best bang for your buck would be getting the Quest 3. It is a Wonderful headset overall. 😁👍
