No it is not, unless you know nothing about gymnastics. If there is no penalty, then everyone will have their coach there and especially they are going to perform vaults that they haven't mastered yet, and they would just depend on the safety of the spotter that he may intervene if something goes wrong.
No it isn't. If you think you're going to seriously injure yourself on a skill, you shouldn't be doing it in the first place. If you want the coach there for mental support, then you can take the deduction, which is what Simone chose. Spotters are allowed for bars because fluke accidents are more common.
It makes no sense. It should simply be like UB, if a vault is a certain difficulty level the coach should be allowed to stand in, with no deduction unless touching the gymnast. (And yes, Yurchenko double pike should more than qualify)
She had the same face in Tokyo, I was always thinking why is she so sad, does she miss her family? Now she looks the same, it is just the way she looks when she doesn't laugh.
I think what got to Suni is that she had to wait her turn to go on beam for a long time after doing vault that her body got cold. I wish her the best of luck on day 2. I know she'll do better. Suni you got this!!!❤

WOW Jades first fx landing was incredible! Simone also had a beautiful landing with her Chuso pass, and those VAULTS?!! How dare she stick that DPY!! And then her Cheng was soooooo powerful she went flying off the table. Shilese is brilliant and her bars were *chefs kiss*. Jocelyn has so much potential, I just need her to get the form down, more lines and extension and clean execution. Leeann is one of my faves! Her gymnastics is just stunning, I mean look at that beam routine! The grace, the flow, the lines, the form, that switch ring! JO And Jade can both do better. Suni worries me, but only because of her health issues. Skye Blakely is also fantastic, but she worries me with consistency. Zoe Miller bars is superb, but I'm not seeing another event where she can bring another high score for team. Tiana is definitely a star, but this may be too early for her yet. She might be the one to watch for after Paris. Oh and then Kaliya Lincoln continues to impress me as well! Lots of talent in the US!
Yeah too bad Zoe crashed and burned on her best event that was rather shocking! Up to that point Tia was in 5th place but sadly she too had a really bad bars rotation! Jordan had consistency on her side both her and Leanne used their consistency to get them to 4th and 5th place overall for the first night! Kaliya had the best night of all the newbies even beating Jocelyn Roberson on both floor and vault and coming in 6th for the first night! Simone was excellent per usual but a little shaky on beam! Can't wait for the 2nd night that will tell us all we need to know so for it's shaping up to be thrilling!!

I love watching the women’s gymnastics. My only complaint is that the cameras focus on Simone or a few other particular athletes exclusively. While I understand your audience wants to see focus on Simone, there are many athletes competing. Please do a better job of giving as many competitors as possible their moment in the spotlight. Every athlete has dedicated years of discipline and passion in preparation, as have their families. I believe they all deserve time and attention. Thank you.
The way the media hyper-focused on Simone during the last Olympics contributed to the stress on her. It's too much for any one person. Now they're doing it again! I understand everyone is excited about Simone, but people have to stop making her into superwoman. She's a human being! Give her teammates some attention as well. Gymnastics isn't the Simone Show and making it into that harms Simone and the whole team.
i have to say i miss tim and nastia… sometimes they were annoying but they always talked about the code of points, comented every single skill… i think their only problem is that they only focused on big names gymnasts like simone, mustafina and aly...but i still miss them
Leanne really brings the beauty back into this sport. From her fingertips to her toes, her lines and angles are simply beautiful to watch. ❤ I hope Suni is getting good mental help too. I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to have your brain & goals in one place while your body & health is in another. Sometimes I think we forget how young these girls are, she’s still a teenager having to deal with all this. I’m sure she’s had many days of asking “why me? Why now” moments. Good job coming out to another competition Suni, we all know you are a phenomenal gymnast, even if you may not feel your best right now.
I think my favorite smile to see here is Leanne's - she always looked UTTERLY terrified in comps before she went to college. It speaks volumes as to the difference in culture between college training and elite training and just how important it is to find the fun in what you love again. Makes me tear up.
Full shade to the guy interviewing Simone at the end of the night, but do you need to ask her about her football player husband when she literally just got off the mat? Like, she has her own VERY impressive identity and doesn’t need to be asked about her husband at her pre-Olympic trials when you know nobody is asking her husband about her career at his football games. Give her the respect that she deserves.
I like it too! Is he quirky and eccentric? Yes but he explains why gymnasts get the score they get and doesn’t just say good job and leave us wondering.
@@zerekanthony2203 I like Sam and I loved her as a gymnast, but Tim actually taught viewers so much! He named all the skills as the gymnasts did them and actually explained WHY they were performed successfully or not. He provided a lot more than: "a little wobble there," etc. Edit: watching again, and Sam does a good job naming and explaining the skills. I know people got annoyed with Tim for his negativity, but he gave the audience a good idea of how the gymnasts would score, because the judges are not generous.
Great athletes. Loved every scene and I couldn't find a single pass I could execute so mad respect to everyone and keep perfecting your craft and above all your lives. I respect Simone Biles not just as an elite Athlete but as a great Woman. She is married and still doing this? Some people would hang it up but Simone doesn't just compete, She is performing Gymnastics and that is something to watch regardless of if she win or not. Just to see an athlete push her sport to new heights when she could simply do the usual and win the medals is Inspiring. Go GOAT aka Simone Biles.
Team after night 1: Simone (VT/UB/BB/FX) Shilese (VT/UB/FX) Skye (VT/UB/BB) Kaliya (FX) Leanne (BB) Tiana has a better beam than Leanne but Leanne is a better back up on bars. However this team is missing a second EF contender on VT and UB, so there’s definitely still room for Josc/Jade/Jordan or Suni/Zoe to make their mark with improved performances.
I’m an outsider to gymnastics and trying to learn more about it, does anyone know why a double pike is considered the most difficult vault? It seems to be the go to for a last pass on floor and extremely common as a dismount on beam, is it because you don’t have all of the acrobatic skills directly before?
Can someone explain to me how the execution score on vault between Simone with a step to the side (9.8) and Skye with a stick (9.35) can differ so much?
Tô até agora tentando entender essa nota de trave da Jocelyn, como ela tirou nota menor que Shilise se a série dela tem mais dificuldade e a Shilise colocou a mão no aparelho?
Joscelyn's difficulty is very high, but her form is riddled with errors. Every skill should be done with pointed toes, and most require very straight legs. Every wobble is a deduction (three very obvious wobbles basically amounts to a fall). The list goes on. The good news is that her form has improved (and will likely continue to improve) since she's been training at Simone's gym! She's definitely a contender for the next Olympics.
A couple of things. Why is there a deduction for Simone's coach on the vault but not for a coach on bars or a coach AND extra mat on the floor? All of it is about safety so why the difference. It's not like Simone's coach is gonna help her complete the vault - he's literally just there for safety. Makes no sense. Also, why are there college/elite categories for women's gymnastics but the men's program just is it was it and you bounce back and forth seemlessly?
There was a terrible accident during the '80s so ever since they allow a spotter on bars. On vault though the danger is higher and they want to DISCOURAGE gymnasts from trying vaults they haven't mastered yet which would put them in danger even with a spotter nearby. Same thing about mats, they aren't allowed in international competitions to discourage athletes to perform tumblings they haven't perfected yet. Men Artistic Gymnastic is basically a different discipline and there is nothing to compare there
I don’t have the answers to all your questions, but the reason she is allowed a mat on floor is because when a skill is above either d or e (I don’t remember which) the gymnast can have a mat simply because it protects their ankles when coming down form such a height
The FIG is a bit notorious for applying inconsistent logic with their rules. This one makes little sense to me, too. FWIW, you can't use extra landing mats on floor at international competitions. The coach is technically only there to remove the mat at US/NCAA meets. Men's and women's gymnastics is run by completely different sets of people and are really different sports, so the answer is very complicated. A big part of it is because the women's national team was run by controlling jackasses for decades. The men have to be 18 before competing senior elite, women 16 (I actually think most of the competitors at Nationals haven't graduated from high school yet). People used to think that women just couldn't/shouldn't keep competing in their 20s. Before NIL it was more profitable for the top women to turn pro rather than to compete in NCAA. This was less true for men because their sport is less popular in the US. Plus a bunch of other stuff.
Q1 (and I preface this by saying this rule is a bad rule and safety measures that don’t interfere with the athlete’s performance should always be allowed), it’s as basic as the fact that it is allowable in the code of points to stand in for bars, but it isn’t on the other events. The other issue appears to be that in order for Laurent to spot from his dominant side, he is standing right in front of the judges, impeding their view. Q2, the difference here is that MAG NCAA competes with the elite code of points, I.e. the open ended scoring system that both MAG and WAG use in elite, whereas WAG NCAA uses a modified version of Level 10 scoring, which still uses the 10.0 system. This means that the MAG athletes are competing their elite routines year round, instead of the completely different focus of MAG NCAA, which (in theory) focuses more on perfect execution of a smaller selection of skills. Many of the elite WAG athletes who go into NCAA keep a ton of their elite level skills IN their routines, but they’re doing a lot less of them because the routine composition in that code doesn’t have a cumulative difficulty score in the same way elite does.
Instead of Tim and Nastia doing Mens and Womens coverage together, it’s Tim and Terry for the Men and Sam and Terry for the Women. I’d prefer to have Sam and Tim together.
Really? Go and check Nola Matthews' routine and learn what artistry is....There is a reason why Nola with a much lower D-score (5.2) and 3 passes outscored Jordan (5.6) and Jade (5.9) and Robertson (6.2) and Wong (5.6) and others and that is called ARTISTRY
I agree with you (Mola Matthews is also on that list, and I think Khalifa will get there with a bit more time), but I will say that I think this is true of most countries, and I’m happy to see Simone’s choreography and performance flow is WAY better this year. Feels more authentically her, and I can really see BJ’s flair coming in there.
Can we take a minute to appreciate how Gabby and Simone, by the very act of representation have quite literally changed the makeup of US gymnastics? 30 years ago, it was a bunch of tiny white girls, some Asian girls and an occasional black girl. Now it is a virtual rainbow and we have so many outstanding athletes! I love it! Representation MATTERS.
Poor Jade I feel so bad for her. She's an incredible athlete, but she's kind of a little out of the shape here for elite. She's so used to doing college gymnastics. And this is a big adjustment for her. And like Sam said, she doesn't have the repetition which, by the way, that reminds me of Bella corolli period Bella said the way to perfection is constant practice and repetition and he was right. I can say that it's also been the case for me. With gymnastics, cheerleading, and martial arts, I had to do them billions and thousands of times in practice and in tournaments and competition. Once she messed up once, I feel like it was a downward spiral for her and she is so disappointed in herself. You can see it on her face like she just gave up while she was on beam. And that's so sad I want to see her. Come back and fight, maybe after this competition. She'll go home and regroup and come back and kick a**
We may end up with a team of only black athletes. Simone, Jordan, Shilese, Kaliya and Skye. They are all improving so much just in the 2 weeks from classics to nationals. Also- I think Leanne is making a super strong bid, and I think she’s coming on strong for worlds/ Paris next year. Disappointed that Jade, Joscelyn and Suni weren’t able to hit day one. Can’t wait for tomorrow night!!
Kaliya is a no for me. I don't think she's ready yet. And Jordan is questionable in my opinion. She definitely needs to add some difficulty. I understand that she just finished her college season but I expected a stronger showing from her. Same goes for Jade. I'm waiting to see how Konnor looks once she's healthy. She could have a real shot for the 5th spot over Kaliya
this competition isn't a 'stepping stone' it's nationals, it's a serious competition and you should be 100% ready to win nationals if you're going to compete at nationals. there are so few competitions to begin with these days and should be taken more seriously like they used to be. worlds is in 4 weeks. glad to see 'less' goofing off by some of the gymnasts here as well..
The -.500 deduction for your coach making sure you don't injure yourself severely is SO stupid.
No it is not, unless you know nothing about gymnastics. If there is no penalty, then everyone will have their coach there and especially they are going to perform vaults that they haven't mastered yet, and they would just depend on the safety of the spotter that he may intervene if something goes wrong.
Especially because there is no deduction to have them next to the set of bars. makes no sense
Next they will be deducting them for the mats they use 😒
No it isn't. If you think you're going to seriously injure yourself on a skill, you shouldn't be doing it in the first place. If you want the coach there for mental support, then you can take the deduction, which is what Simone chose. Spotters are allowed for bars because fluke accidents are more common.
It makes no sense. It should simply be like UB, if a vault is a certain difficulty level the coach should be allowed to stand in, with no deduction unless touching the gymnast. (And yes, Yurchenko double pike should more than qualify)
I'm 30 minutes into the video, and I'm so happy to get to see so many gymnasts represented on this broadcast :D :D
Better yet. That they are all enjoying the experience.
Simone's landings are better than ever. I know she might be stressed but she looks so much happier doing gymnastics, it's crazy

I thought that same thing, looks like she may have hurt her knee on vault. Or it was already injured. I hope she can get healthy quick!!

Gymnastics isn't the Simone Show and making it into that harms Simone and the whole team.
i have to say i miss tim and nastia… sometimes they were annoying but they always talked about the code of points, comented every single skill…
i think their only problem is that they only focused on big names gymnasts like simone, mustafina and aly...but i still miss them
Leanne really brings the beauty back into this sport.
Jeez suni cant catch a break im wishing her good health. ❤
I think my favorite smile to see here is Leanne's - she always looked UTTERLY terrified in comps before she went to college. It speaks volumes as to the difference in culture between college training and elite training and just how important it is to find the fun in what you love again. Makes me tear up.
Leanne Wong has incredible grace and talent 😊 I hope she gos far! Kayla also has so much potential.
Amazing to watch the stamina the balance of these young women we love watching them .
I don't understand why peacock doesn't give you guys the 60fps version, they stream it at 60fps don't they?
Where are Tim and Nastia? I miss their commentary!
That's what I've been thinking. Tim actually taught me so much! He would name each skill and describe it so that viewers could learn the specifics.
I agree 💯
Love the commentator combo!!
Leanne Wong looks like a ballerina doing gymnastics. Absolutely beautiful.
Her beam has always been so soothing. Like ASMR
Thank you ❤
Full shade to the guy interviewing Simone at the end of the night, but do you need to ask her about her football player husband when she literally just got off the mat? Like, she has her own VERY impressive identity and doesn’t need to be asked about her husband at her pre-Olympic trials when you know nobody is asking her husband about her career at his football games. Give her the respect that she deserves.
Спорт, это то лучшее, что придумало человечество 😊😊😊
Good Luck to all of The Gymnast that are competing in The 2023 Xfinity U.S. Championship in San Jose California!
Where’s Tim? I’m one of the few who likes his commentary
Good riddance! He's way too much glad we get something different for a change in over him and Nastia! Sam is refreshing
Thank you!!
I likeJordan’s floor routine, Simone’s and Shilese.
I miss Tim s voice 😂
Noooooo 😩😩😩😩😩
Will he be back? He definitely is the voice of gymnastics
I know you’re joking!😂😂
I miss Tim so bad..
Where’s Tim Dagget?
Good riddance!!!
Leanne Wong is the definition of Artistry
Always watching the ladies in sports. 😘😘😘☮&💙
No shade towards the commentators but I miss Nastia and Tim 🥺
same!! I'm so used to watching with Tim's commentary. It feels like home. lol
Laurent stays blocking the camera😭💀
Worse things to be forced to look at...
He has a barren field of _____ to give at this point 😂
I know! 🤣😭 but it was so important he was there to protect Simone incase anything was to go wrong! But I really wanted to see that landing
and the judges 👀 i think he just wants to be seen because his 'spotting' isn't necessary and when they do fall he just stands there lol
@@zerekanthony2203 lmaoo
why is the stadium music still playing during floor routines 😡😡 so ANNOYING
I absolutely love Simone Biles Choreo & her Performance on The Floor Routine!
I really wonder where they found 1,7 deductions on Jordans bar routine. Execution looked so damn good to me!
Finally Simone and other americans putting more artistic on their routines.
does anyone know about konnor mcclain? is she still injured?
Great athletes. Loved every scene and I couldn't find a single pass I could execute so mad respect to everyone and keep perfecting your craft and above all your lives. I respect Simone Biles not just as an elite Athlete but as a great Woman. She is married and still doing this? Some people would hang it up but Simone doesn't just compete, She is performing Gymnastics and that is something to watch regardless of if she win or not. Just to see an athlete push her sport to new heights when she could simply do the usual and win the medals is Inspiring. Go GOAT aka Simone Biles.
Is there an nbc broadcast with them?
men and women will be on nbc today!
not simone's coach blocking the near stuck vault landing 😭😭
Team after night 1:
Simone (VT/UB/BB/FX)
Shilese (VT/UB/FX)
Skye (VT/UB/BB)
Kaliya (FX)
Leanne (BB)
Tiana has a better beam than Leanne but Leanne is a better back up on bars.
However this team is missing a second EF contender on VT and UB, so there’s definitely still room for Josc/Jade/Jordan or Suni/Zoe to make their mark with improved performances.
Josc? No way, maybe next year if she fixes her form and her total lack of artistry
I agree with this prediction! I think the second contender would be Jordan.
Skye has a Lopez, and she averaged a 14.225 night 1 on VT, while Josc averaged a 14.325 with her best vaults. She can actually score close to Josc
Skye maybe has a chance for UB and VT, she is performing two vaults and her bars are also pretty good, she really needs to hit tho
I’m an outsider to gymnastics and trying to learn more about it, does anyone know why a double pike is considered the most difficult vault? It seems to be the go to for a last pass on floor and extremely common as a dismount on beam, is it because you don’t have all of the acrobatic skills directly before?
Love this
Can someone explain to me how the execution score on vault between Simone with a step to the side (9.8) and Skye with a stick (9.35) can differ so much?
Welcome back QUEEN Shilese!!
I think Jade Carey should perform to Bolero on the Floor Exercise next season. It would be a perfect vehicle for her.
Your A Beautiful Gymnast
I really want to know what music is in Leanne Wongs floor routine. She wanted everyone clapping, girl I waaaas. Anyone know what song/mix that was?
Does anybody know what Melissa Metcalf is doing? I saw her in the background a couple of times and I still remember her from her UCLA manager days
Jordan’s floor artistry was sooooo good!!Not sure about the face plant at the end lol
Jade and Suni both did not look happy nor did they smile at all🤯🤯
Tô até agora tentando entender essa nota de trave da Jocelyn, como ela tirou nota menor que Shilise se a série dela tem mais dificuldade e a Shilise colocou a mão no aparelho?
Joscelyn's difficulty is very high, but her form is riddled with errors. Every skill should be done with pointed toes, and most require very straight legs. Every wobble is a deduction (three very obvious wobbles basically amounts to a fall). The list goes on.
The good news is that her form has improved (and will likely continue to improve) since she's been training at Simone's gym! She's definitely a contender for the next Olympics.
I think she received more deductions on each skill. Shilese had a 7.6 execution with a fall. Joss had a 7.2 with no fall
One thing nobody mentions is that Jocelyn does not do adequate splits on almost all her jumps/leaps. That eats away at your score.
@@ParisInTheSpringtime999her jumps & leaps really werent good here… i love her but her execution really wasnt her best this day,
Will there be a day 2? Did I miss it?
A couple of things. Why is there a deduction for Simone's coach on the vault but not for a coach on bars or a coach AND extra mat on the floor? All of it is about safety so why the difference. It's not like Simone's coach is gonna help her complete the vault - he's literally just there for safety. Makes no sense. Also, why are there college/elite categories for women's gymnastics but the men's program just is it was it and you bounce back and forth seemlessly?
Yeah it's a dumb rule, but it's a rule so it is what it is for the time being....
Why no tim and nastia?
Maybe because it isn’t the prime time show.
Instead of Tim and Nastia doing Mens and Womens coverage together, it’s Tim and Terry for the Men and Sam and Terry for the Women. I’d prefer to have Sam and Tim together.
@@gymcentric5727Me too Tim explains the deductions and what the requirements are for each skill. He’s a bit nutty but informative 😊
@@Katigirl23 Exactly. To me, watching gymnastics with his commentary feels like home.
I love Jordan and Simone .... My Two favorite Gymnast. I mis Nastia Liukin she was another great gymnast back in the day!!
Serious question- was there something wrong with that bottom bar? So many people had trouble with it…
Great job athletes! Also great job, NBC commentators! I love the insight and analysis.
Jordan is the only top USA gymnast who has true artistic flare on the floor. Everyone else lacks that.
What about Nola ?? She has the most beautiful artistry I have seen!
Uhhh Leanne Wong and Shilese Jones are beautiful on floor!
I love it! Representation MATTERS.
i hope Bart Conner return as commentator in gymnastic🙏♥️
She'll go home and regroup and come back and kick a**
The Corollos were awful for gymnastics.

I like Josc’s floor routine too! It’s fun!
BILES WINS AT 26! TOM BRADY OF GYMNASTICS! DOMINATING PEOPLE HALF THEIR AGE!
1:04:25 great camera work! 😥
this competition isn't a 'stepping stone' it's nationals, it's a serious competition and you should be 100% ready to win nationals if you're going to compete at nationals. there are so few competitions to begin with these days and should be taken more seriously like they used to be. worlds is in 4 weeks. glad to see 'less' goofing off by some of the gymnasts here as well..
Its really interesting to see some of athletes transition back into elite from college. Uncharted waters. Its going to
Be very interesting
I vastly prefer this coverage where we see athletes competing vs an athlete compete and then stand around waiting for a score
They still didnt show several girls in the top 10 at all!
Does Nastia not work for NBC anymore?
They had to make this shilese montage before they knew simone was coming back. You can tell this was her year! And that TRIPLE L turn was GORGEOUS
2023 WORLD TEAM: SIMONE, SHILESE, JOSC, LEANNE, JADE - ALT: DULCY/SKYE
I would say Simone, Shilese, Skye, Jordan, and ? Not sure who the 5th should be yet.
@@angiebrown4463I feel like Leanne has to be there. I don't know about Jordan, which is making me nervous
