Can I Get 5 Iconic Overdrive Pedals From an EQ Pedal and an OD-3?

  • How close did I get? I hope this video shows how useful an EQ pedal can be, as well as highlighting some of the main differences between these classic overdrive pedals.
I’m using the Boss GE-7 after the OD-3 because that way the EQ pedal has more influence on the overall sound, if I put the Boss GE-7 before the overdrive, it only adjusts the saturation and compression of each frequency band, it would still have the inherent overall sound of the OD-3. In an ideal world I'd have an EQ pedal both before and after the Boss OD-3 but I want to see how close I can get just using one EQ pedal.
    Timecodes:
    00:00 - Intro
    00:39 - Ibanez Tube Screamer
    03:16 - Klon
05:43 - Marshall Blues Breaker Pedal
    07:18 - Nobels ODR-1
    09:20 - Full Tone OCD
The classic Ibanez TS-9 tube screamer. I’ve put the Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive along with this just because it’s another popular overdrive pedal with a similar sound to a tube screamer. The Ibanez TS-9 and Boss SD-1 do seem a bit more compressed than the Boss OD-3 which gives a bit of a softer attack sometimes when you hit hard and lets notes ring out a bit longer. I can hear less of a difference between all the pedals when playing through an amp that's on the edge of breakup, which is how a lot of people prefer to use these more mid focused tube screamer type pedals.
The Ceriatone Centura is the Klon clone that I own so I’ll be using that to compare to here. There's a big difference in the gain settings, the Centura is a much cleaner pedal. I managed to get close to the EQ by using similar settings to the tubescreamer settings but flattening out the peak of the mid boost a little and then making a steeper drop at the edges. The Centura seems to compress in a different way, when I play lightly on the OD-3 the sound gets cleaner and drops in volume but when I play lightly on the Centura, the overdrive cleans up in a similar way but the volume of that cleaner sound seems louder and clearer than the OD-3.
The Marshall Blues Breaker pedal is one of the original amp in a box pedals. The Bluesbreaker pedal is also what a lot of other popular overdrive pedals are based on like the Analog Man King of Tone, the JHS Morning Glory and the Wampler Pantheon. The Bluesbreaker is similar to the Klon in that when you turn up the gain control it changes the EQ, mainly boosting mids. The Bluesbreaker is a bit more subtle than the tubescreamer and Klon circuits though, it’s flatter with the mid boost being mainly in the lower mids. The the difference in the saturation and distortion in the different frequency bands is quite obvious here, the Bluesbreaker pedal is much more saturated, compressed and distorted in the higher frequencies while the OD-3 seems to be much cleaner and less distorted in the high end. This is where it would be very useful to have the an EQ pedal before as well as after the OD-3 to try and get closer to the sound of the Bluesbreaker pedal.
The Nobels ODR-1 is often regarded as the Nashville overdrive sound. I love the ODR-1 for low output single coil pickup guitars like my strat where the open airy high end of the OD-3 can sound too harsh, especially when like here you use it through a Fender blackface with it’s inherent mid scoop a Jensen C12N speaker which is also known to be bright. The ODR-1 has a really big full bass response and has a nice rolled off high end to stop it sounding harsh. If like me you love the sound of the OD-3 but sometimes struggle with harshness in the high end when using single coil pickups, this is a great setting.
Not a lot actually needs to be done to get the OD-3 to sound similar to the Full Tone OCD. Just a tiny little bump at 3.2k and a slight dip at 800hz.
There are obvious limitations to this, I only tried to match one setting from each pedal, I used what I thought were probably the most commonly used settings for each pedal. So even if I did manage to get a sound which is close, remember the range and flexibility of each pedal is going to be different.

I’d say with all of these you got it real close, but honestly the eq pedal with the od3 sounded better than the actual pedal you were trying to copy to my ear. Good job and it’s time to buy an od3 and an eq pedal!

Thanks! I feel I struggled most with the Bluesbreaker with it's more saturated higher frequencies, which the OD-3 just doesn't really do. But like you say, I kind of like that cleaner high end in the OD-3 a lot of the time anyway. Thanks for commenting!

Thanks, it's my benchmark overdrive pedal that I use to test and compare other OD pedals. Always seems to perform well, especially into amps set clean. I think it's a good choice for using with an EQ pedal like this because the OD-3 has a nice full frequency response as a starting point.

      No it wasn't.
MXR for example doesn't allow that.
The MXR overdrive pedal still requires the carbon copy delay pedal to complete the signal.
So the MXR overdrive and EQ pedal both require the carbon copy delay pedal to complete the signal going to the amplifier.

I love this. Instant subscribe. If nothing else, this proves the point that your essentials - guitar, amp and the speaker contour the final sound far more than any of the overdrives...all these sounds have something in common and I bet it is mostly due to response of the amp/speaker and the way you set them.
You have not matched any of the sounds 100% but still you got the basic character and in many cases even better/more usable sound in my opinion. I wonder what you would do with a 10 band eq or with an additional eq before the drive.

I just roll off the high end at 6K and it really takes care of the bee hive buzz. From there the sky is the limit on how you want to shape the mids. EQ pedals can also be used to shape the sound of pick-ups. They can make a Tele single-coil can be made to sound like a P90 or even a PAF, and vice versa. They can also be used to shape the tone of your amp. You can't exactly make a Black Face Fender sound like a Marshal or Vox, but you can use them to make it sound more like on them, and that greatly expands the utility of your amp. I bought the OD-3, SD1 and the GE-7 eq pedals after watching this video! 😂. I’ll admit I havn’t used the eq like this. I have them in the order above. First Impressions: The OD-3 has way more gain (than SD-1) and seems to be more versatile as far as different tones you can coax out of it. The SD-1 is more dirty but seems to be more “tame-able”. Together they are crazy.

Just have to say, I absolutely love the Boss SD-1. I've been using it for years as my main overdrive, and it always sounds great going into a tube amp.

A decade (or even two) ago there was an article on the internet that made the case that any guitar sound could be emulated with this chain : Distortion -> EQ -> Distortion -> EQ -> Distortion -> EQ
Seems like you're pretty much proving that the first Distortion -> EQ pair is true. (The distortion pedal pair... the other two pairs would pretty much be the amp's preamp + EQ Stack and the amp's power amp and speaker.
Throw compression in, in the right spots and it's a pretty flexible rig. (At least in the digital domain where you can easily stack as many copies of a plugin as you want. With real analog stuff it could get expensive, fast, LOL!)

This was impressive - I'll be trying these settings, but I have the overdrive/distortion pedal (OS2). I would be great to see what you can do with one of those. Also, I would enjoy your take on the Ibanez renometer pedal - five band eq with boost and high boost.
    Thank you

Yes I have an old video on the Boss OS-2 comparing it to some classic overdrives and distortion - ua-cam.com/video/hgTKYSmIm40/v-deo.html. It's a very different sounding pedal to the OD-3, it's great though!

This is so awesome. Last week during my guitar lessons I realised that the kind of pedal I need is a simple overdrive. My teacher has a lot different pedals on the board for his students. For the last song we were playing last three weeks (heavy fuzz bluesrock) I played through the Boss BD2. It sounded soo nice and round with a fuzzy feeling. I think it fits in my style. I was always focused on distortions (because I love metal). But for the music I play: (blues)rock, pop and a lot of regular guitar exercises. I don't need a heavy fancy distortion metalish pedal. And during searching a lot of info about the BD2, the OD3 came in sight. So I am in doubt, the BD2 or OD3? Or both! I have a MXR EQ pedal. Maybe I should get a second hand OD3.
Is it possible to use the OD3 as a attenuator?
I also own the DOD Carcosa Fuzz. Nice pedal but sometimes I struggle for the tones I want in that specific moment.

BANFIELD, Grunge Bands and David Gilmour would often use the RAMS Head Big Muff, Boss OD-1 and SD-2, Ibanez 850 as EQ pedals turning the DRIVE close to zero. Kurt Cobain would use the Boss SD-1 was an EQ pedal drive turned close to zero will using the SAMSAMPS pedal. David Gilmour would use the RAMS head big muff as an EQ pedal to get that half cocked tone which you can hear it on floyds Animals album. Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield used Ibanez 850 as an EQ pedal drive close to zero for the rhythm guitars and guitar solos for the first and second metallica album.

EQ + OD3 does everything imho. I love the amazing range of sounds you can get from those two as you so wonderfully demonstrate. :)
Edit: 100% need to upgrade the opamps in the older GE-7's to NE5534P's though. Much too noisy otherwise. I hear the newer made GE-7's with all SMD components are a lot better for noise thankfully.

These days, whenever I think another drive pedal, I turned on one that I already have + an mxr eq and give up on the idea. It's crazy how MUCH you can change the sound with an eq pedal. I actually use a fairfield ~900 pedal along with the EQ, the bias control offer quite a bit of different sounds, the EQ then does its magic and done, GAS is gone!

Did you notice any added noise or hiss with that boss EQ pedal? I have been reading nothing but bad reviews for those saying they're extremely noisy but I also heard a couple years back they finally fixed that problem. Before that everybody had to have a modded so they would get rid of the noise.

    Hello, my friend!
I use a generic overdrive with this equalizer pedal to simulate distortion pedals from the sixties, seventies, and eighties.
I can't figure out what amplifier or pedal I am "copying" or simulating, but the sound changes a lot when I mess with equalizer.
Very handy gear, in my opinion...underrated by many young musicians who top priority is to buy many amps or pedals.

    • @MichaelBanfieldGuitar
      @MichaelBanfieldGuitar  Рік тому

Good question! I'm not very up on the Dumble sound unfortunately. Using an EQ to emulate the characteristics of different amps is an interesting concept though. It would be difficult, so much of an amps tone comes from it's speaker and the way it compresses.

  • @darwinsaye

I need to do this kind of experimentation the opposite way, to see if I can get my OD-2 to sound more like an OD-3; bring back some of that shelved bass and cut some of the mid hump.

  • @ParaBellum2024

Interesting video! I had an OD-3 but found it had far too much compression, which killed any dynamics, and I also had a GE-7, which added a load of hiss/white noise when the sliders were moved more than a few dB (which you didn't do), although I know of a mod that corrects this. In any case, I sold both those pedals.
