Another variant is to use lemon or orange juice and zest instead of the vanilla sugar, cook the same way and either use the same base or a home-made very short butter pastry, add the lemon or orange topping and instead of chocolate add meringue and brown under a grill/in the oven. Mum used to make this when we were kids and the oranges or lemons were ripe on the trees. Lovely and very rich but the citrus cuts through the sweetness. Haven't tried it with the vanilla sugar but might give it a try (never knew it was Boston pie though - is that Boston in Lincolnshire or another one - it was always just lemon or orange meringue pie to us.). Thank you for the memory and will have to make it again, will try this version as well.

It’s nice and looks delicious BUT… I’m from Boston and that’s not at all traditional BCP. The original is a single round cake split, filled with pastry cream, topped with a chocolate fudge frosting.

The reason why "pie" is in its name is, because 170ish years ago, most home bakers used skillets to make everything (including pie). Basically, they didn't bake it in a cake pan, which is how it got its name.

такой пирог пеку много лет....только бисквит разрезаю на несколько коржей......прослаиваю и заливаю шоколадом......получается приличный торт......

It's not so serious. The original had rum and almonds on the sides with chocolate fondant....who makes it like that anymore? Things evolve.
