@@pixelbitg9386 It is pretty good!!! I have to admit that it is as good or even better than the saturn and playstation versions. The Saturn version was the only one that I played at the time. I had played Road Rash 2 on the mega drive a couple of weeks before I played the Saturn version and I was blown away by it! That's why the Saturn version of Road Rash had so much of an impact on me. Now, looking back and comparing the 3DO, Saturn and Playstation versions, we can see that the 3DO was more than able to compete with early Saturn and Playstation games shoulder to shoulder. It's a shame that developers didn t took "more out of the 3DO". I bet that that console still had more to give.
Haha, that's so funny! I've played this game hundreds of times and never gotten stuck in a bush! My buddy's friend bought an FZ-1, the classic original Panasonic model, after it was reduced in price to, I believe, $499, which was NOT very long after launch. That was sometime in 1994, we were still deep into the SuperNES and the Playstation hadn't even been announced yet, so every time I'd go over there we'd beg him to let us play the 3DO. It really was incredibly ahead of its time, and seemed so amazingly advanced back then. He had Road Rash, Need For Speed, Crash N Burn, Twisted, Monster Manor, Madden '94, a basketball game, Way of the Warrior, Street Fighter, Gex, and a few more that I'm forgetting. IMO the 3DO games that appeared on later consoles still hold up pretty well. I actually prefer the 3DO version of some games, like Road Rash, NFS, Gex, and others. I'm probably biased because of my early experience with the 3DO. Yes, the frame rate is usually lower, but the games tend to play a bit differently. For instance, NFS on 3DO feels more realistic and less arcadey than the PSX version, which is what I prefer. 3DO also has a few games that aren't really available on other systems, like Madden '94, which yes was made for SNES and Genesis, but Maden '94 on the 3DO is different beast. I wish more developers had continued to support the 3DO and gotten the most out of it. I don't think we ever quite got to see its true potential. As for my buddy's brother, he got sold the same line that a lot of early 3DO buyers got, the promise of the M2 hardware add-on. Of course we all know what happened with that. The 3DO is still a very interesting system with a decent number of great games and a very unique library. I picked one up for a very reasonable price a couple years ago and am happy that I have one. Now I just have to do the RGB mod and get an ODD emulator and it'll be perfect!
I think I remember having a demo of this on a PC Format cd on the front of a magazine, I LOVED it! I then bought it and played it on a pentium 120mhz with 32mb and a 3dfx with 4mb, It was amazing because it ran at a decent fps in SVGA :)
Fantastic video John, as usual. These DF retros are a real treat to me, smiling from beginning to end! Thank you so much for your work, it is appreciated..
This was a very nostalgic Retro for me personally. I was 14 years old when the 3DO came out, and specifically got my working papers so I could buy one to play Road Rash 3D. Took all summer working a crappy job, but I absolutely loved my 3DO and Road Rash! Thanks for all your work on these retro videos, John!
I am happy to the people from all over Europe here at DIGITAL FOUNDRY. Audi from Norway, Alex from Germany, John and Richard from UK (If I'm wrong here, please correct me). Greetings from Poland! 😀
Sold my Sega cd 32x and entire library of games for a used 3DO and a copy of Road Rash way back in the day. Did I make a good choice? This version of Road Rash was truly the best. It was the final 16 bit style of the game before it went 3d and down the crapper. The music and videos capture a slice of the times in which the game was released. Definitely a classic
Terrible Coughing I mean, it's pretty dang good, but I am of the opinion that mega man 2 and doom's soundtrack are unmatched, and will never be matched. I respect your opinion though, music is subjective.
Glad to see the 3DO get some love. Need for Speed was the best on 3DO because of the videos. There's one "winning" video where the opponent says, "that's fine you won, I'll live.... in fact I'll live forever digitally immortalized on this disc, you however will die one day. " Kinda took all the thunder out of my win.
Great mod for the 3DO. Road Rash looks great! Please do a Road Rash special. I love and have it for the Sega CD, PS1, and the N64. Love the Sega CD version for its 16-bit gameplay, great music, and updated presentation. I don't think that version gets enough credit.
This is so creepy...Was just watching your 3 year old "Failed Game Consoles: 32X" video, then looked for a 3DO version (there was none). Then I wake up, and there's a retro video regarding a 3DO game. I'm so happy! Yes, I grew up with a 3DO so my nostalgia for it is strong.
Super Play was amazing. It pretty much single handedly opened my eyes to the Japanese RPG genre, and the painful years of waiting for Square to localise Seiken Densetsu 3. Great video. Now I'm really curious how the 3DO's GPU compared to those in the Saturn and PS1.
Ahhh, the 3DO. Very fond memories. My top 3. #1 Star Control 2. #2 Myst. #3 Road Rash. Also, Road Rash is where I fell in love with Swervedriver, Paw, Hammerbox, and Sound Garden. Thanks fellas!
I don't know anything about the 3DO or its mods but Road Rash is one of my fav games, thanks for talking about it. Come on EA do something about Road Rash, a remaster or something.
My uncle worked on the 3DO game Immercenary. It was so cool as a kid going over to their game studio(which was on a farm in Arkansas), Hell, he's even in the intro video of Immercenary as the guy who get's killed.I remember him showing me Road Rash on 3DO and was blown away by what I was seeing.
A game that looks interesting indeed. Thanks for the quality video John and Audie. You guys did a great job as always. I think I will get the game for Saturn in the near future
The PC version of this iteration of Road Rash is easily in my top 5 racing games of all time. Runs and looks a lot better then the console versions. And I used to always play it with my CH Flight Stick. Leaning the stick to make the bike lean always seemed really cool to me. Not many games can replicate the sense of barely controlled chaos of driving the higher end bikes later in this game. You're going SO FAST and obstacles pop up all the time. It is insane. Another thing I really like, is even if you screwed up a couple times, there's still a chance you could make a comeback and still win the race. Especially later in the game, when the tracks get super long. SUCH a good game.
About running on foot: The police are chasing you all the time. They just can't catch up to you when you're racing on the bike (unless maybe you crash a lot). If you go pedestrian, they're going to nab you in a hurry. Nice bug you found there in that bush. I never experienced that one either.
If I remember correctly if you run for a bit then your bike moves forward a bit like a rubber and effect, it was like that on the first road rush maybe if you hadn't run too far and been busted then maybe your bike would have come out of the bushes 😅 And a snes version was indeed planned for the snes from thq but was canceled due to declinig sales as far as I know.
I played the hell out of the PS1 version of Road Rash, just seeing that character select screen gave me a big nostalgia trip. It had a midi version of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" as well which was awesome as i was just getting in to rock music at the time. Thanks!
Ya, Road Rash was the best looking and maybe playing 3DO game for sure. I worked at a game company that made 3DO games. Nearly the whole studio was straight out of college, mostly UC Berkeley. We did Captain Quazar and Battlesport. Two very different games. Our studio survived even though each game sold very poorly because 3DO bought us and the whole company switched over to mainly PC development and we eventually made Uprising for Windows 95.
I have fond memories of playing 3DO games with my brother in the early to mid 1990s as teenagers. We saved $ that we earned by babysitting our nephews for months to be able to buy a 3DO. It was great at the time.
I played a ton of this game on the 3DO back in the day. I lived in this strange reality where both myself, and my best friend, had a 3DO. So between the two of us, we had a ton of 3DO games to play.
I had a 3d0 back in the nineties, "Return Fire" was my favourite game on the system and it was included on my system (UK model) it had the best sound it was great!
Great game series. I have the PlayStation port of this but I remember seeing it on 3DO the first time, wow. Still prefer the Genesis versions the most. Thanks for the show!
I loved this game on PS1 and screwed around with it so much. I actually did try running a race on foot after totaling the bike. Eventually the game spawns your bike onto the road again if you run too far ahead. You can also nudge pedestrians while on foot and I had fun very meticulously pushing grannies into traffic. I don't think any game made me laugh so much as a kid. I eventually got Road Rash 3D and just didn't think it was as fun. Also the whole look and attitude of this game is peak mid-90s grunge era.
That's interesting that the Megadrive version had Rob Hubbard do the music, yet the Amiga version was by Jason Whitely. I also remember the interview with Jason, who seemed very disgruntled by how little Ram he was left, to create the tunes :)
Absolutely go for the full Road Rash vid. Excellent series. Get the PC version running, as that can be set to true 640 x 480(p). It's the same game as the 3DO, however. I still have it on CD-ROM if you struggle to find it. Runs great in Windows XP & 98 - It's DirectX based. Direct Draw, I'd expect, rather than D3D. Not tried to run it on Windows 7 or 10, as I have an XP box and an old 98SE box for old PC stuff, at my place up North.
This is one of my favorite game of all times! Spent sooo much time on this, Need For Speed was nice but not fun like Road Rash, this + Space Hulk, Return Fire, Battlesport, Poe'd... 3D0 had such amazing games.
Garbage Pail Kids were the weird/gross collectable cards. Cabbage Patch Kids were cutesy dolls for boys and girls. Not sure if it was different over there, or just an honest mistake. Cheers!
I remember the Garbage Pail Kids cards. They were the height of transgressive, gross-out humor for a kid under 10. And what about Monsters in my Pocket cards? Those were huge at my elementary school!
The console market was such a wild west back then... they had VERY different technologies too, you could often tell what platform a game was made in just by looking or listening to it. Nowdays it's all basically PC boxes, and there's only 3 of them. That's not bad of course, it's nice to have parity between platforms, but I do miss some of that 90s magic.
I loved Road Rash on the 3DO and the soundtrack. I still have my Panasonic FZ-1 R·E·A·L 3DO and the Road Rash Game that even included a soundtrack sampler on CD.
When this game came out as a kid I thought this was it - we have finally peaked in graphics and achieved photo realism. Lol. I wanted a 3do so bad but they were minimum $600 in my country.
The UK retailer, GAME, started re-selling Jaguars around 2003. I remember going in to pick up my pre-order copy of Wind Waker, a couple of days early and was surprised to see a stand with new Jaguars and games for really cheap prices. I think they might've had the Lynx too. I remember looking at them and almost bought one and some games, looking back, I kind of wish I had.
I played this game everyday for most of my childhood years I just can't seem to forget it I have it imprinted on my retinas from those long straining stares at the crt monitors
I live in Japan, and I confirm, 3do abounds in retro games stores. Today I found 2 copies of Way of the Warrior, almost bought one, but I preferred to don't take any chances and grabbed the only copy they had of Alien vs Predator for the Atari Jaguar, arguably, the best game in that system (I don't own a Jaguar yet, but I couldn't let that chance escape). Plenty of 3do consoles and games on the stores I went.
I played a ton of the original Genesis version as a kid and it definitely remains by favorite. I like how if you attacked characters like Natasha they would turn on you and say mean comments after the races.
There's nothing underrated about it. The price was way out of line for what you got. Good games were just a few. The controller was terrible. I ended up performing surgery on the D-pad to get it to register diagonals without enormous pressure. The system software couldn't handle missed disc reads for shtick. I don't think it even tried to re-read. It just would freeze up. While that was rare in most games, it was a real issue in games that relied on constant disc reads, like anything FMV-based. This was the Panasonic unit, BTW, the most expensive and highest rated.
I assume you're using a FZ-1 model because I had an odd issue with the FZ-10 model I had and Road Rash being unable to play the in-game music during races. It actually said in the options, due to low memory. 0_o Also had games that would not boot on the Fz-10 like Family Feud.
Road Rash being planned for SNES IS mentioned on a couple wiki sites, however there's NO citation included which may mean that it's BS from a random person (or maybe it was legitimate either as a rumor or official announcement) but as far as I can tell from googling, there's no way of knowing for sure which.
Music: Kyuss Game: Road Rash Cartoons: Ren & Stimpy President: Clinton Cool stuff: Trapper Keeper Shoes: Airwalk, L.A. Gear TV: Married With Children Those were the 90's.
You mention that the Atari Jaguar had a big marketing push in the UK. That's probably because the system was initially developed in the UK by Flare Technologies, made up by former Sinclair research employees (ZX Spectrum) and was going to be launched as the Konix Multisystem.
I love Road Rash and the first The Need For Speed on 3DO, the PS1 ports can't compete in visual quality but have (somewhat) better framerates. On the other hand Saturn ports doesn't have the same quality visuals but both games can run as high as 60fps. And PC is the best obvious, 60fps and 640x480 remastered visuals (the sprites on Road Rash are very crisp and bigger, dashboard view on The Need For Speed is simple amazing!).
I can confirm on road rash 2 at least you can run to the finish if you dont get caught by the cops. I even crashed right at the end and flew to the finish line and it counted. I assume it is the same in this game?
Road Rash 2 was the first game my brother copied for me on CD, i felt like such a hacker being about 8 years old. First thing i installed by myself, first thing with humorous violence i ever played. I loved it. It was tremendously entertaining. Today i am doing motorcycle trackdays for fun, for sure this game had nothing to do with that at all.
Man I loved this game on the saturn. It was so fluid and fun. I loved when console and pc racing games pushing tech. There was always something different and intriguingly advanced like carmageddon. These days only a couple of games like spintires do the same for me.
Best way to enjoy Road Rash is probably emulated PS1 in Retroarch with overclock for silky smooth framerate. Unless you're a purist that wants to play it at low 20's.
I had a toploader 3DO and it was amazing at the time coming from the aging 16bit consoles. Wing Commander 3 on 3DO was beyond awesome with stereo headphones and a giant CRT ! I still dreamed of owning a Neo Geo for years but no kid I grew up with ever had one. Not even the rich kids.
This engine didn't stress the PS or Saturn in the slightest, but it did have a lot of 2D trickery - and game-wide, that Saturn version provided the better performance - though 3D elements had better draw distance on PS1.
Ive been riding a supersport for a while now. This game 100% captures what its like to ride a motorcycle. I'm constantly beating the shit out of other riders and listening to grunge music.
John, I wish you did a full Retro episode on this game, 3DO/Saturn/PlayStation/PC/Mega CD. I think it deserves it
Alex Star Hope we will see an OSSC PRO video
This game impacT my life TILL NOWADAYS!

Well he did do Need for Speed at least.
Good news!
I remember playing this on PC when i was little, the art style always scared me.
Yeah, the art style reminded me of the Goosebumps series by R.L. Stine.
Road Rash is THE reason everybody wanted 3DO
Need For Speed was the system seller for me.
@@DavidBrown-bs7gg me too, really impressive at the time. Need for speed blew me away
Super Street Fighter II Turbo was the thing that stood out to me. First console to have a port of it and the first SFII with arcade sprites.

I remember seeing Road rash being played on a 3DO in my local game store! I was determined to get one and I did in the end! I loved it!
The saturn version was "the shit" and the soundtrack was really good! i actually recorded some of the soundtrack on cassette to listen on my walkman.
I used to listen to some Saturn games in my CD player. Later, I ripped the tracks onto my Xbox and sometimes played new games with Saturn soundtracks.
The 3do version remains the best version in my book. That sound track is killer

That's interesting that the Megadrive version had Rob Hubbard do the music, yet the Amiga version was by Jason Whitely. I also remember the interview with Jason, who seemed very disgruntled by how little Ram he was left, to create the tunes :)
The Digitized graphics look so stable and nice on that modded 3D0! Love the FMV as well.
Loved playing this game on Genesis and the Saturn. Please do a Road Rash retrospective and a deep dive into the 3DO.
This is one of my favorite game of all times! Spent sooo much time on this, Need For Speed was nice but not fun like Road Rash, this + Space Hulk, Return Fire, Battlesport, Poe'd... 3D0 had such amazing games.
Cool Video. Jon, please consider the comedic value of adding DFs Frametime overlay performance graph to your retro videos :-)
I remember this for PC. One crazy thing was that the music tracks weren't CD audio, they were uncompressed WAV files on the CD at about 45mb each.
Sure we want an episode for the 3DO! Especially since you have it modded now!
Love DF Retro ! We need more 'Failed game consoles' !
Turbographix16 and especially Supergraphix in Japan would be awesome !
Played hundreds of hours of this on the playstation. Thx for the Nostalgia kick.
"No dogs were harmed in the filming of this episode". The biker, on the other hand..
It was GameStation that received the unsold stock of Atari Jaguars and games. The consoles were sold for £30. The games for £10.
@@leaderx7547 Game definitely did too. I don't remember seeing them in GameStation but they could have been there.
I played this game everyday for most of my childhood years I just can't seem to forget it I have it imprinted on my retinas from those long straining stares at the crt monitors
Was thinking of this game the other day, fond memories!
I had this on 3DO, Saturn and PC. Played the 3DO version the most because it came first. Still got the PC version... stored... somewhere.
Huge open environments, hardly any pop in, no texture warping? Looks awesome!
I remember playing this at the store back in the 90s
Great video. DF Retro all of the things please.
3DO was a truly underrated console. My cousin owned one and I remember plenty of arcade quality games on it.
God, y'all cannot imagine how badly I wanted a 3DO as a kid. They were $700, though, and we were poor, so it was a pipe dream.
Road Rash is a Diamond of a game.
When Audi says "welcome to the real world" when John gets stuck in the bush X-)
I assume you're using a FZ-1 model because I had an odd issue with the FZ-10 model I had and Road Rash being unable to play the in-game music during races. It actually said in the options, due to low memory. 0_o Also had games that would not boot on the Fz-10 like Family Feud.
Road Rash being planned for SNES IS mentioned on a couple wiki sites, however there's NO citation included which may mean that it's BS from a random person (or maybe it was legitimate either as a rumor or official announcement) but as far as I can tell from googling, there's no way of knowing for sure which.
Music: Kyuss
Game: Road Rash
Cartoons: Ren & Stimpy
President: Clinton
Cool stuff: Trapper Keeper
Shoes: Airwalk, L.A. Gear
TV: Married With Children
Those were the 90's.
I owned this system back in the day. $600 it costed me. I was a young kid working a high school job.
One thing I do remember about the PlayStation version of Road Rash was it lost the Jessie Video.
Hey another Carmageddon fan! Praise be brother ! :)
This is one of my most favorite games OF ALL TIME!!!
I really wish EA would have Criterion do something with the franchise...
i have this one on sega Saturn back in the day, so much awesome!
Best way to enjoy Road Rash is probably emulated PS1 in Retroarch with overclock for silky smooth framerate. Unless you're a purist that wants to play it at low 20's.
It was my childhood dream to own a 3DO or Neo Geo.
DF Retro on Road Rash? Yes please!
This engine didn't stress the PS or Saturn in the slightest, but it did have a lot of 2D trickery - and game-wide, that Saturn version provided the better performance - though 3D elements had better draw distance on PS1.
I absolutely loved the 3do back in the day, very underutilized system
Oh man I remember watching this game on demo at Walmart and I wanted the system so bad but the price for a 13 year old was unreachable
Ive been riding a supersport for a while now. This game 100% captures what its like to ride a motorcycle. I'm constantly beating the shit out of other riders and listening to grunge music.
