In this video we look at a TG501 (TM500 Module) This is another of the main modules that I use for calibrating the scopes in the lab. There were some surprises in here along with some very interesting high speed stuff.
** Repair exposes the Tech to mains electric and should only be done by trained personal. Errors can be fatal. **

Thanks for this series of video's, much appreciated. Tek 500 plugins are scarcer here in the UK and hence cost more but am looking into alternatives.Cheers....DA.

Hi Diabolical Artificer, Glad you are enjoying. The next video will be on what makes these 3 plugins special for scope cals. I hope it will have a lot of good information in it for selecting alternatives if the 3 main 500 plugins are not available. It should be the next video that is up on you tube.

Great vid as always. Been looking forward to this one. I broke my differential comparator and now have to recalibrate it. Has a few unusual cal steps which need your brains. But unfortunately, it’s a 5A13N and you don’t do the 5000 plugins…yet.

Ill have to see what I can do there. I actually have nothing in the 5000 series on hand so I will have to start from scratch on that one. I see what I can make happen. Ill have to look at that after I am done with the test card for the 7854. I am getting close to having a board done to recreate the analog test card. I do have the 7000 series one if they are similar. I have one of the newer 7A13’s that needs to find some time on the bench.

I have an extra TG501 with a dead 1ns signal. That transistor in the comb filter is actually a special diode. I replace it and still no signal. The lower shield needs to be removed for further chasing. That’s a lot of desoldering. Can’t bring myself to do that.

Forgive me for asking the question. Are you sure the signal is not there? 1ns sign wave is a 1Ghz signal. I am see it barely on my 7904a with a 7B92A. To really get a good look at 1ns signals I am on the DSA602A with the 11A72 plugin, And lots of averaging. 1ns is far outside the capabilities of most of the scopes I have in the lab.

@@ZenwizardStudios Since i'm a 5000 series lab, I can only see the 1ns with my 5S14N sampler and HP counter (same as yours). I have a second working TG501 that was used to calibrate my 284's and sampler. The area right under that special diode is really difficult to get to. I suspect the prob is in that area.

Really enjoying your videos and forwarded your channel on to Alan Wolke W2AEW who is also a YT video blogger and is a sales engineer at Tek. One thing you might think about if at all possible is to back the camera up to allow us to see the instrument you're using to adjust levels with (you did that with the 53131A). Or if possible even better would be a PIP (pix in a pix) if possible. You may have done this in an earlier video that I haven't gotten to yet but I'd find it interesting to find out about you and your lab, maybe a tour? Thanks and keep up the good work! Hi Dino Papas, Glad you are enjoying. It will also be interesting to see what Alan thinks I have been a long time lurker on his channel as well. In terms of the camera I am fighting 2 issues. In most cases the size of the gear is rather large. Especially the curve tracers and 7XXX scopes this coupled with the focal length of the lens has caused me no end of frustration. The camera I currently have is a cannon A20 but it has a fixed lens with about 20X optical zoom. What I need is a good camera body with changeable lenses. I need some wide and macro lenses. I am going to need to invest in some glass for sure soon. But when I make the change I would also like to kick up in to working with 4K video. Currently I top out at HD. The good news here is I have the compute horse power already covered for 4K just need the camera and glass. I am already in the cannon ecosystem with a T3I so I will most likely keep the cannon glass. Just get a few more lenses. I will have to see how picture in picture would work I currently only have one camera. Mabey a intermediate step would be the cannon on the DUT and a go pro on the instrument making the measurement (I will have to think on this) mounting and angles are the key there.
I do have a lab tour planned most likely around Christmas as one of my goals for the channel is trying to help a beginner go from blank table to lab I am thinking about possibly doing an annual how the lab has changed over the year. As especially during the building process the equipment is very dynamic. I am getting to the tail end of where the gear is not eye wateringly expensive yet but it is getting up there.
In terms of being a Ham yep I am one but I will have to admit I am an absolutely AWFUL ham. Given that I go not yet have an antenna. Let alone a receiver or a transmitter I have hit Technician class on my license I do need to finish it out Amateur Extra is on the list of things to get done.
The next video out will be about the 3 500 series plugins and what makes them useful for calibration the PG506,TG501,and SG503 Then it will be back to scopes and test equipment. I also have a VTVM on the way.
      Zen
