  • Dr Jesse Chrastil, from Panorama Orthopedics & Spine Center, discusses osteoarthritis. He shows pictures and explains what arthritis looks like on an X-ray in the hip and knee. He discusses how the breakdown of the cartilage causes pain from the areas of the bone rubbing together. He also explains the options that are available for treating osteoarthritis.
Dr. Chrastil is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee arthritis. He takes a patient-first approach to medicine, and focuses on minimally invasive joint replacement surgeries. Dr. Chrastil sees patients in the greater Denver area, including Centennial.

Good explanation but they should tell you knee replacements wear out too. Generally 10-15 years. So you should postpone the surgery as late as possible. Like 65 or 70 years old.

To diagnose knee OA is x-ray laying down and taking the x-ray enough? Or you need to be standing

Excellent video on arthritis in your knee some people try everything but sooner or later the only way out is surgery today your in the hospital for no more than 2 days and they send you home and you got to do therapy for about 2 weeks and start moving around I've seen people wearing some kind of steel brace to help them get support back on there leg and knee but this video is excellent I give it five stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐💯👍❤️

I’m 48. I had bone on bone arthritis on my left hip. I had never experienced so much pain…. I was on tramadol, morphone and codeine.
Eventually after waiting for over a year in the uk and writing to the nhs I got it replaced. The nhs is terrible for this type of desease. I was told I was on a waiting list to get on the real wait list to get it done. I as livid plus the pain. Eventually I got in o see my orthopeadic surgeon after around 2 years and immediately he said I needed AC replacement. Two weeks later I had the op. Whilst this is not perfect I can live with it.
Uk healthcare is poor quality. It’s disgusting how I was treated by my gp. Even after looking at my X-ray where it clearly showed bone on bone o was told to take parcetamol. Then those strong meds just screwed woth my head so bad. I was so sick now at least i can walk wothout too much pain.
I’d rather pay and go private than use the nhs. They make it so you can’t complain. It’s one big fat bureaucracy with below than par service. I have used healthcare systems in Malaysia wgich was excellent for the price and the US which was ok but too expensive. Malaysian private hospitals are like hotels and the costs are extremelly cheap plus they have the latest technology such as complete open mri scanners unlike the uk. Most of the doctors in Malaysia are either Australian or britsh too. It’s really amazing the level of service for the price.

What you are describing about the UK is somewhat similar to Canada. We have good healthcare in the sense that it's available to all. BC had a medical plan which we had to pay for. My understanding is that we were, at that time, the only ones in Canada to be directly paying a premium to be on the plan, and everyone had to be on it in order to get certain medical services. Our current government finally did away with us having to pay directly to the plan, but it is now included in our property taxes. I don't know if any of the other provinces are including it in their property taxes or not. I do know there have been a lot of people who moved to BC who couldn't understand why we had to pay for our medical.
Anyway, I went to the musculoskeletal care clinic two years ago and was told that I was too young and recommended that I wait until around 60 or more for a knee replacement. I was 52 at the time. I must admit, though, I am terrified of surgery, esp as I get older.

      Hi Yvonne,
I can not comment on knees however for the hip, I was told it is better to get the operation done earlier rather than later. The operation is the easy part. The recovery is tough though. I couldn’t move for weeks without help but was told since I was young it is less risky and will repair easier if I’m younger. My right one needs doing too but I have to see. This one is close to bone on bone but is more manageable although still painful. Eventually I have to do it.
I’m not telling you what to do or anything like nor do I even know your case that but my personal advice is to get it done sooner rather than later for hips. For knees i have heard it is slightly nore complex. I still have pain in the one he’s done but it’s 90% better than it was before the op. That pain was excruciating.
There is private healthcare opportunities here in the uk. They are quite well priced but still the nhs seems to suck alll the money in. You could give them a trillion pounds and they would still want more, hide behind even more bureacracy and unionize even further.
The nhs is a black hole of disgusting practices. That’s how I put it anyway.

@@bunglebonks7399 It's a bit of a different process to get things done here in our city / province. We are critically short of dr's and have been for years. I'm lucky I snagged a good dr abt 15 years ago, because everything started to go downhill right afterwards. Now your only hope is to go to a walk-in and see a different dr each time for whatever ails you that day.
If you do see a specialist (such as knee, hip, etc) and they don't feel that you need surgery, then no matter how much you plead, you just don't get it. I swear sometimes you have to be crawling on the floor before they will do anything. They may give in and do what you ask sometimes, but you have to be very careful as well because they will show you the door with "do not return to sender" stamped on you if you become a pain in the a$$.
What peeves me off is that we can't say anything bad to them or strongly voice our opinion, but they can be as nasty as they want to us. It's so backwards. I had to go to a walk-in clinic a year ago and there were around eight people outside the clinic. We had all been told to knock on the door and someone would triage them when we got there. One MOA came out, yelled at us (I'm not kidding), and slammed the door closed as hard as she could. We all looked at each other, shook our heads, and said, "wow." I tried to say something nicely to the dr, but it went z-i-n-g over his head.
Surgery wait times can be long depending on the type of surgery or procedure. I was also told I couldn't go see another Dr. So, I left the clinic no further ahead then I had been. I find walking horrendously exhausting and I sleep a lot, but don't dare admit it to my dr because then I'll get tagged as depressed (everything is considered mental illness these days (even before COVID), even if it's not mental illness). Yeah, I'm depressed ... anybody would be depressed if they hurt, and could hardly walk without getting sore and exhausted; but they think you're depressed for other reasons, maybe even depressed over COVID. It's pretty sad, really.
