Subaru XV 2020 review: Hybrid
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 вер 2024
- The idea of a hybrid version of Subaru’s small XV SUV seems to make complete sense - this is a car that probably spends most of the time in traffic but is owned by people who might like to head down a dirt track occasionally and if it’s green, too, then what more could you want?
That’s what Richard Berry us here to answer, because after real-world testing the XV Hybrid he found out.
Yes, in many ways it had everything and in others he was left wanting.
On one hand the XV Hybrid is excellent and on the other it’s… not. It’s great to drive on and off the road, the fit and finish of the cabin is superb and the safety tech is outstanding. On the other, the value for money isn’t good when you consider that it’s almost the most expensive XV, but still doesn’t have sat nav, nor dual-zone climate control, nor the larger display. And then there’s the fuel economy. Even if we had have matched the 6.5L/100km Subaru says we should get the saving is a mere 500ml for every 100km compared to a straight-petrol XV. The plug-in hybrid version of the XV as sold in the United States can get about 2.6L/100km. Now that type hybrid XV makes far more sense.

I have never seen any car reviewer lying down on the ground to demonstrate it’s ground clearance!!! LOL. Appreciate it man!
A half assed effort from Subaru I'd say. Thanks for the straightforward review Richard. And your usual quirky style is worth watching. 👌🏼
Fantastic review!
You have earned a lot of respect by clearly pointing out the faults of the car and not excusing them.
The points rating is far too high though, it doesn't match all of the valid criticisms from your review.
Good review. Your honesty as usual Richard is appreciated. 👍
you must have really been flogging the poor little thing. My 2018 XV gets 8.1 L per 100 peak hour stop start motoring, drops to 7 on the highway. Love the car, best and safest little runabout you can buy. And it sticks to the road like its glued to it. Apart from I agree with you criticism of the packaging, no spare, small info screen and manual air con at that price!
Just buy the regular petrol Subaru Forester. 2.5L motor, rear air vents, bigger boot, etc.
I appreciate your emphasis on the fuel economy...and no spare tire!
I like this presenters style.
Same for the Forester Hybrid, rubbish system with 12l/100km on the review test. These models won't last that long.
Really enjoyed your presenting style. Made watching a car review more accessible when you aren't a petrolhead.
Hopefully for the next gen Subaru hybrid they can get tech support from Toyota.
Thanks for your great review I suspected it wouldn't be that great with petrol the name hybrid is just all hyped up
They lost a lot of Loyal brand Subaru buyers when they dropped the mannual transmission. Thier excuse was everyone wants the CVT. We all know the real reason is you can't have active safety aids with a manual transmission ie: adaptive cruise etc . This car would be decent with a manual. The outgoing xv with the 6 sp man was a great little car . We test drove this model in petrol form and it felt like a asthmatic elastic band . What are they thinking/ doing lol. No wonder it's one of the most advertised vehicles on car sales. Disapointing.
The subaru hybrid system is there to augment power and not save fuel, honda are guilty of that aswell.. Most people looking to buy a new hybrid think they are getting ultimate fuel saving.toyota is the way to go if that is what you are after and only then in the Prius etc
So weird seeing the steering wheel on the other side. I had the much less hybrid 2016 hybrid and I agree the mileage difference is nearly nil. Our 2016 was 28.9mpg our new 2020 non hybrid is 27.4. On the power, it's not a sports car, so the power it has is sufficient. Want more? Buy a wrx.
Hello ,we have a current model XV. Great car. However, reported issue with info display from DAB radio, only partial displayed with limited text.Appears Subaru does not want to know. Frustrated
Yes a gift 🎁 for someone I know . I like !
Is that still the same one used for 2023?
Subaru are just missing a trick here. Great looking car, besides this colour. Give ti some oomph and a real gearbox and they'll triple their sales. An Hybrid in this - waste.
That’s a pretty generous rating given it’s poor fuel economy
Good video. Well done 👍 ¿Do you think it's a better choice this XV with the 1.6i and 115 HP? Cheaper with the same capability outdoor than this one. Cheers.
Hybrid only works if it is a plug-in hybrid as you just don't make enough power from regenerative breaking alone which is why the fuel savings are so woeful. Even when it is properly implemented I still don't see the reason for it. Take the new RAV4 for instance, the difference in cost between the normal drivetrain and the hybrid is around $6K and the difference in fuel economy is impressive at 1.8L/100K but still, that is only going to save you a few hundred dollars a year in petrol so I just don't see the point.
Good honest review.
Yaaay first person to watch the amazing Richard Berry
How many kmhs were on the clock ? some people say the fuel usage doesnt go down till after 12 thousand kmhs
You are amazing! Detailed but hilarious review!
3:46 - it has a boxer, indeed, it should handle well - the big question is about the battery, which sits higher than in an auris hybrid, because of the rear diff. how does that feel compared to the standard xv?
The difference would not be noticeable
Nice video review
05:50 some of the negatives mentioned
Did they improve the Driver seat?
Subaru is making all their cars hybrid
Can u please do a review of Kia seltos!
So what was that noise?
the electric motors, especially when doing regenerative charging, make a sound that takes some getting used to.
Another hybrid failure from Subaru. I hope they dont do the same thing to the upgraded Outback as I am interested in that.
So, real world fuel economy isn't as good as claimed bench test cycles? Shock.
Manufacturer claims belong in the bin. Fuel is comparatively cheap; fill up, move on, worry about other things like driveaway price, practicality, reliability, servicing costs, customer support - all Subaru strengths.
Mazda CX-30 > Subaru XV
Lol I like this guy
Liters. Petrol. Tyre. Rubbish.... When are these Europeans going to start using the correct words.
Subaru I really starting to drop the ball. Overpriced garbage
That was not the overall view of this reviewer, nor of most. I have never come across a car that had everything one wished for. This one must be nearing the end of production, though I suspect an all-new one will not appear until 2022. A new Levorg seems to be the next cab off the rank. Meanwhile, later this year they will be offering a modified XV with the 2.5 litre engine from the Forester. Whether that will be good or bad value remains to be seen. I have had three Subarus in a row (Liberty standard auto. Forester turbo, Liberty 3.6R cvt) over 15 years. All have been utterly reliable. I now want something a bit smaller for my next car, otherwise I would happily take an Outback when the new one makes it here. "Garbage" and "Subaru" do not belong in the same sentence.
