Most the hits from this video will get you fined and suspended today. Not just the head to head contact. They have made tackling in certain ways illegal. They are trying to minimize head injuries, especially the ones that show long after play. And also serious leg injuries.

The tackle that you thought was a wrestling move and probably not legal is actually a beautifully executed old school, shoulders square to midsection tackle...with a lift takedown for emphasis. Those kinds of tackles, especially in the open field like this one was, are actually a rarity in today's football.
I actually got a severe concussion from someone taking a cheap shot and hitting me in the head with the top part of their helmet. Played the rest of the game and felt fine. Long story short I feel asleep, woke up in a different state, and had to learn how to walk again. That was going on 18 years ago and I still suffer from that injury. Football is so much fun but obviously very dangerous!

I played all of my life and I don't know anyone who had a concussion or feels any effects from American football. Cte is pure, made up theory by a couple of fame-seeking scientists with zero evidence proving it exists.
As has been mentioned, when most of these were filmed the hits were completely legal. Players are still trying to adapt to the new stricter rules because all of their football lives they were encouraged to go out and "Knock somebody's head off!"

Thing is, the pads make it less safe. Rugby because you wear nothing it’s more wrap tackle based. You put guys in armour and give them a big helmet at THEY are willing to launch themselves like missiles. You’re more aware when you’re unprotected and play as such.

The block at the beginning of the video is not legal. You can't block towards your own endzone. It is called a Crack back block. I loved doing it while playing but illegal now.
When you realize the sheer size of these guys, it's all the more impressive. Most of them are about 2 meters in height and at LEAST a hundred kilos. And their speed and agility is just crazy, considering their size. Just top notch athletes all around. So getting hit by one of these guys is like someone driving past you and throwing a refrigerator at you.

As teenagers we used to play full contact football without Any padding but the clothes your wearing. I never broke anything in these games but I know others that have, a little Titanium bone bracing surgery and you're good as new, that is till you get older and start feeling all those hits when getting up in the morning.

The Body Bag game between the Eagles and Redskins was pretty bad too. Eagles players were getting paid extra to knock players out of the game. It's something Buddy Ryan often did to incentivize his guys taking opposing players out of the game by any means.

The padding in football is a weapon. The helmets especially. They’re made of foam padded hard plastic, the face masks are made of iron covered with rubber. When you put on a football helmet it makes you want to use the helmet as a battering ram.
Think of the shoulder pads as weapons, rather than protection. You're not allowed to hit with the top of the helmet. QBs get extra protections from the rules due to their importance. Most important man on the team.

It's not so much their importance as it is that they can't usually see the hit coming... If they take off running with the ball they can be hit just like any other players on the field

@@srellison561 Ironically enough, with the exception of THAT play. At the time, "helmets" were just a leather headcap - there was no protection around the face, hence no concept of a face mask. It was only around the time of that particular game when some quarterbacks began wearing a single iron bar over the front of their face, as seen on that quarterback in that play. But since they were so new, there were no rules about them, and so grabbing that bar was not, strictly speaking, against the rules. There just hadn't been a reason for such a rule. Until then, that is.
I played football through High School and rugby through College. Rugby is definitely the harder sport overall - even the big boys in the pack need to be fit enough to run up and down the pitch. But, what you get in Football that you don't in Rugby is the hyper-specialization of skill and physical training. A 250lb MLB isn't going to to keep up on the pitch, but that's because he's been training since puberty to turn his body into a machine designed to deliver one explosion of force in a split second. A rugby team is made of athletes that can lean into a specific role, but everyone exists within a tighter band of overall strength and fitness standars. A football team is a machine made of tools designed to do specific jobs so theres a broader variance in skills, strength, fitness. The other difference is the common-sense tackling rules that Rugby's always had which Football is slowly starting to move towards. My highschool football coach encouraged us to play rugby in the Spring because rugby teaches you how to properly execute an open-field tackle. In a similar way that gloves encourage harder hits in boxing over bareknuckles, football pads encourage players to throw their bodies like a human punch as opposed to properly getting low and wrapping-up. Rugby gave me stitches and scars, but football gave me broken bones.

Back in the not so distant past they didn't understand the gravity of head trauma. Seems silly now but that's the fact. They actually used to tell guys to lead with their helmet on tackles. Now absolutely no head shots are legal and you have to tackle with your shoulder not your helmet. If they really wanted to eliminate head shots they would play without helmets like Rugby does. No helmet and you are going to be a lot more careful about your head and anyone else's.
Nope head shots are not legal anymore. Still happen accidentally though quite often( accident or not still a penalty, too rough or seemingly avoidable, you are kicked from the game, maybe more, and fined, or even kicked out of the league, so to speak. I’m always amazed when one of these videos pop up in my feed, and it’s Brits being surprised by the basic concept of the game? Yes, you CAN hit any player on the field at any time, essentially as hard as you want or are able to, provided you don’t target the head (rule change within the last ten years). And there are some additional new protections for QB’s, where you have to be really careful about hitting them when they don’t have the ball. That’s it. Other than that, the defense is trying to get to the ball or player with the ball by any means necessary (within reason) and the offense is trying to advance the ball to score. On every play that occurs, almost every player is involved in contact with the other players. The offense is hitting the defensive players and blocking them back, the defense is hitting the offensive players to penetrate and tackle the player with the ball or take the ball. It is not uncommon for two players who are otherwise uninvolved in the play-don’t have the ball or aren’t tackling the player with the ball-to absolutely smoke one another. On defense it helps to knock an offensive player down because that means less protection. On offense it’s good to knock a defensive player down because then there are less defenders. A hit can come anytime from any direction, but offensive players can’t hit defensive player from behind. That’s a penalty if it’s caught. The helmet has to be in front of the body to push or hit a defender. A defender can get away with hitting from behind if they are making a tackle or seen as attempting to make a play on the ball or attempt to tackle a player. The defense can also get away with grabbing and holding players (but you can’t hold a receiver past 5 yards down field. And you can’t blatantly hold an offensive player down. It’s rarely called, but if a defensive player is blatantly holding an offensive player down, typically a lineman, defensive holding will be called. But most of the time, if you are able to grab and throw someone out of the way or off you, that is legal in defense). The offense can NOT grab or hold. Which is why you see clips in this video offensive players annihilating defensive players off ball. They can hit or block them, but they can’t hold or grab them like a defensive player might do to get an offensive player out of the way. The offense can’t do that. They can only hit or push with open hand.
Rugby and American football are both sports requiring an incredible amount of toughness. The best way I've heard it explained is rugby is a physical, contact sport and football is a collision sport. Football is about who can be the most explosive and violent in 5 seconds, whereas rugby is about who can be consistently physical and tough over a grueling 40 minute half.
I had a couple of friends from the UK when attending high school in Houston, TX. They would often talk about how tough rugby players were for not wearing protective gear. In American football, there has to be gear because the men who weigh 250 lbs in the NFL run 4.5 second 40 yard dashes. The impacts of their hits are like small auto collisions.
A while back, I was watching a sports science type show that measured the tackle force between American Football, Rugby, and I think the third sport was Australian Rules Football I'm not sure. But the test revealed that American Football players hit with much more force than the other sports. It was said to be because American Football players are padded and the subconscious effect of that was that they're more likely to play with reckless abandon. Hockey pads have a similar effect. After some of those guys get enough momentum built up, you can potentially skate faster than you can run, the hits are just...WOW!!
Today, a player is considered defenseless at a certain point so a lot of those hits would be illegal today. With the players becoming stronger and faster over the years, also with retired players developing CTE, new rules and equipment have been introduced to American football.

Just discovered your channel. I always enjoy watching British reacting to football hits. It's an absolutely brutal sport. I played in high school and a few years in the semi pros. At 40 years old, some days I struggle to walk just from the damage my body has taken.
I only played a year of HS football, but one of the things i took away from it (I'm a couple years older than you) was an understanding of the adrenaline high that comes from hitting something (or more specifically someone) absolutely as hard as you can without withholding any sort of consideration for self-protection. The very first time I correctly tackled someone in a live game setting, helmet on the ball and shoulder in the gut, in the open field when we both had time to accelerate, is one of the clearest memories I've got from high school 25 years later. It convinced me pretty quickly that everyone in this thread who talks about how the pads and protection of football really dial up the level of violence. I feel pretty fortunate I got to only play a year and come away understanding the experience without having the repetitive wear and tear of the game on my body and my brain. I'm glad I did it, and also glad I didn't play 7-12 like I did basketball. I can understand why that pure adrenaline rush of going 100% without holding anything back can be addictive.
One of the crazy things about football to me is the younger guys who play in junior high and high school, there are some nasty hits even at that level. I saw a lot of broken bones, (usually arms) and lots of people down for the count after getting stuck!

Yup, I suffered numerous concussions in high school. Nowadays there are protocols teams must follow but when I played we were still very much in the "walk it off" mentality. I still struggle with the decision that if I have kids would I allow them to play football?

The best part o being at a NCAA or NFL level game is hearing the hits. There is a loud crack of the pads and the whole crowd goes oooohh! You can hit a player who is chasing the ball carrier. He has to have a good chance of tackling the runner. You must keep all your eyes wide open at all times. Good job guys!
As a Polynesian born and raised in the US, we Islander's grew up playing both rugby and football heavily because we're first generation American. Rugby as tough and as brutal as it can be, is much more safe because of hitting regulations. I've had to explain it to my family overseas who used to make fun of football. This is why we wear gear. And the gear don't really do much to be honest haha. But rugby is a contact sport. A gentleman's game. Football is a collision sport. A sinister game. We dont play to hurt other's.... sometimes. Regarding picking a team: The NFL finance and wage structure makes it so that all the teams are quite a bit more equal. It's much more like every NFL team is like a solid, mid-table Premier League team. No "Big Six" (or seven now with Newcastle). And no Relegation fodder. Everyone is like the West Ham-Villa-Wolves-Palace, mid-table range. So when you do have an Everton (or Sunderland or West Brom) that drops waaaaay low, or a Brentford or Fulham (or Blackpool or Huddersfield) that skyrockets waaaay up, it's pretty normal. Like in mid-table where you win one week and those three points move you up 5 places and you think Europe is possible -- and then next week you lose three points and drop and are afraid of relegation. In other words -- You will NEVER be able to pick an NFL team because you think they're Real Madrid or Barcelona, Bayern or PSG. That's not how the NFL is set up. So, really, you should pick the MINNESOTA VIKINGS! The greatest team in the universe (arch-rivals to the bears and packers). But only if you support Arsenal. If you pathetically support the totty chickens or manch-divided then we don't want you supporting the Great VIKINGS! And Welcome to the NFL!
The rate of CTE for american football players is off the charts. Basically, back in the day in particular, they didn't really understand the compounding effects of concussions nor did they realize how easy one can get them especially in a contact sport. So when most of these hits were legal and when helmet hitting was somewhat encouraged you would see some pretty devastating consequences. They have done a couple movies on the CTE rates in the NFL.
I’ve read a comment that someone said that rugby is a CONTACT sport and American football is an IMPACT sport. Those guys are hitting each other with the force of a literal car crash.
The main push for more safety rules in the NFL came in the last decade or so, so any clips that appear to be before that time based on camera quality are much more likely legal hits at the time

headshots are generally illegal but there is leeway given when it cant be avoided. however in recent years they have really been cracking down on targeting the head. previously it was just a 15 yard penalty but in recent years players have just been getting ejected for it
No head to head hits anymore. Not allowed to lead with the crown of the helmet. Most of the big hits occur because the defenders are try to separate the ball carrier from the ball, or the offense are protecting the ball carrier. The size of these players is often most spoken about. It is rarely spoken about the speed at which these large athletes are moving. In 2012 at the NFL scouting combine, Dontari Poe, who is 6 feet 5 inches tall, weighed 346lbs at the time, ran the 40 yard dash in 4.98 seconds. That's a very large man moving very quickly.

Just an aside all the "Wrestling Moves" the one where the player pogo sticks the offensive player that jumped (a Spinebuster in Pro wrestling) and the Belly to back style suplex (which has many names but is normally called a German Suplex in Pro Wrestling vernacular) are both legal, and encouraged at every level of football.
There was actually a game played once called the body bag game. Was between the Eagles and Redskins. The game used to be a lot more violent. They have made lots of rules to make players safer now.
In college football there's a rule called Targeting, where one player deliberately targets the head. In most conferences, if they catch you doing it you're ejected from the game and could miss half of the next game.

It wasn't in this video, but a major hit that motivated rule changes or increased fines for hitting defenseless wide recievers happened to a player for the Cardinals named Boldin. Two players on the opposing team (Jets) dove at him like missiles and basically sandwiched his head with theirs. It caused a facial fracture and a broken jaw. Boldin had to get wires put into his mouth to fix his bite so he could eat/drink normally again.
I was knocked out completely during a tackle while playing linebacker. And woke up with an excruciating headache a few seconds later. I never missed a play and played the entire game. That’s the way it was 25 years ago in high school. You were taught to walk off concussions.
There used to be a saying for these hits. Not sure if I've heard it in a while but..."de-cleating" a player is pretty much what you see. Hitting so hard you remove their cleats from the ground. Many of the hits you see in this video, the ones where someone is running to tackle and doesn't see the blocker coming, are now illegal.
I got blindsided once, dude got me on my shoulder pads so it wasn't as painful as it looks. I was running after the ball carrier and out of nowhere I saw sky then grass. It was a bit fun spinning in the air like that, but then I hit the ground 😆

As for the guy in the white and green that you asked if he was out, that hit broke his back and ended his career. A lot of those hits were legal at the time, including the facemask tackle, but are now illegal.
These clips were compiled over a good number of years. Most of these hits today, would get you penalized, and or ejected, and or fined, and or suspended.
When you play football, the best way to think about a hit is that each one is about as traumatic as a small car accident. If you can just let yourself go limp in a hit, you don't really feel it, and you can pop right up. So for like a running back, they have the equivalent of 20 or so small car accidents per game. These men play 18 games a season, and often play injured. Football destroys the body and brain, but it's the greatest game on earth. It's a war game.
Most were absolutely legal, it's changing a bit now where you can't target the head but it def is still brutal, rugby is a game of tackles and hard hits, American football is a game of absolute collisions and car wrecks basicly
I got hit in the rib cage freshman year of high school (I'm 28 now) and still haven't healed. Also tore every ligament in my foot which also is still messed up. Beautiful sport but so dangerous
A lot of the bad concussions come from the head hitting the ground as opposed to the player v player contact especially in the 70’, 80’s, and early 90’s when the old Astroturf was still being used. That was nothing but a very thin carpet stretched over concrete.
Head shots used to be totally legal and even encouraged. The rules have changed a lot over the years to protect players. This game uses to be absolutely brutal.
Quite a number are college & high school. They're a different breed. My son's an 8th grader & he's a 6 ft tall defensive lineman. Helmet to helmet contact was outlawed in 1996. Lowering the helmet to make a tackle became a penalty in 2018. Tackling by grasping the facemask is the facemask is a penalty.
It depends on the context when it comes to helmet to helmet being legal or not. So lets say a receiver is going up to catch the ball if he's hit in the helmet at all before he can defend himself its a defenseless receiver penalty. But if a receiver catches the ball and gets around 2 steps or puts his arm up to defend himself then its more than likely gonna be fine but sometimes at the end of the day it can also depend on the reffs.

I can 100% guarantee you wanna be running full speed toward someone rather than take a blindside hit. Those blindside hits are the most brutal because you don’t expect it, at least if I’m running full speed toward someone I can put my head down and try to barrel through them.
Some of these camera angles are hard to see well enough to know whether it's "shoulder to shoulder" or "helmet to helmet." Also, there are situations where a player is presumed to expect a hit and other where a player is presumed to be "defenseless." There is a category of foul called "unnecessary roughness" where it's clear that making contact would not have changed the outcome of the play. For example, tacking an opponent when they are already out of bounds, intentionally crashing into a player who is already down, tackling a player after they have obviously lost possession of the ball, etc. Likewise, certain hits and tackles are illegal if they come too early, like before the ball arrives to a receiver, though these are usually levied as "interference", "illegal contact" or the like. Much of the "used to be legal" stuff you were speculating on is covered by expanded rule definitions in the above areas. Sometimes teams decide it is strategically valuable to commit a foul because they are willing to pay the penalty yardage. Several new rules have cropped up making most of these punishable by additional "unsportsmanlike conduct" sanctions (including ejection) to further deter teams from committing too many willful fouls. You do see teams still take occasional intentional fouls, but these days it's mostly "delay of game" and generally not roughness. The league has even cracked down on abuse of game delays in recent years. As for concussion protocols, those mostly have to do with how a player who suffered a hit or jolt is evaluated to determine if they need to be removed from the game for further medical attention. In many injury situations, self-reporting players have incentive to "push the limits" to get back on the field. However, for some injuries this can seriously compound the medical danger, so the recent protocols call for an independent concussion expert to evaluate players according to strict guidelines. This hopefully removes the temptation for players to gamble with safety.

Rugby is a contact sport. Football is a collision sport--AND the players are bigger, stronger and faster than rugby players (check out video on 10 current athletic freaks in the NFL). A famous Rugby player tried out for an NFL team as he had been a good runner in pro Rugby and he said that after the first practice--not actual game--he had been hit harder than anytime in his career playing rugby. Football is about smashing the guy, not just tackling him, as there are fewer opportunities than in Rugby to get the ball back in your possesion. Also, the equipment--should pads etc., are a basis to hit harder, they are weaponized. It is also why people playing football get injured more frequently and (much) more severly than in Rugby.
Back when football was football, you're not good if you play defense and never had a concussion. I only played corner in highschool and had a few, but then again I'm from Florida 😂
Many of these players get up and run back to the huddle. In soccer, the player gets kicked in the calf and is down for minutes, often rolling in "pain".
I played rugby and football in college. The difference is the size & speed of the players, and the collisions in football. The players are massive, fast, and when they collide, its brutal. Rugby is rough in a different way. There's a lot of "dirty" in fighting in those scrums and there are less refs to see the illegal stuff. There could be anything from punches, to biting, to head butting. Add to that the fact that there are no breaks in plays and you just keep running. In the USA, at first, a lot of the rugby players were former football players so we tended to play as if we still had pads sometimes but that's not good for longevity. You will see Rugby players playing longer because they tend to "turtle tackle", letting the player run into them and dragging him down. You don't see as many bone jarring collisions as in football. It doesn't matter if you have a helmet, because of the G forces, your brain still collides with the inside of your skull. Also, the pads protect your shoulders but not your abdomen or back. The helmet can be used as a weapon, but they have been outlawing hits with the helmet little by little for 20 years because the tackler can be paralyzed if he hits with the top of the head, or he can give himself and the other player concussions. Two great sports in their own way.

The first time you pause it and ask if it's legal. The guy that got hit was injured rest of season and they made a rule about "blindside blocks" because of it.
The difference, (between American Football and Rugby) is, the pads American players wear, which make them feel indestructable... so they turn themselves into guided missiles. That can make them overconfident though, and lead to more injuries. Rugby players still have to protect their own bodies. Many people in the US actually think that an answer to the concussion problem in the sport is to take away the facemask. It may sound counter-intuative, but taking away the facemask will force players, by natural reaction, to avoid head to head hits. Oh... and what you're calling a "scrape down", is called facemasking over here. It was a common thought when facemasks were introduced , that it's a part of the player, if he wants to wear it. It was quickly changed. As was "Horsecollaring", or grabbing another player by the back of his pads, and pulling him down.
American football has evolved. At one point all that was legal. With the advancement of these athletes the rules had to change to protect the players from themselves. Helmet to helmet can get you ejected now. American Football has never been a contact sport. It's always been a collision sport.

A fair portion of these hits were legal at the time but most likely not legal now. The rules are getting stricter now about head to head contact but it happens anyway. Still brutal sport.

Sometimes a player is unable to pull up in time to avoid a head shot, but intentional or not it is still a penalty.
Most the hits from this video will get you fined and suspended today. Not just the head to head contact. They have made tackling in certain ways illegal. They are trying to minimize head injuries, especially the ones that show long after play. And also serious leg injuries.

The tackle that you thought was a wrestling move and probably not legal is actually a beautifully executed old school, shoulders square to midsection tackle...with a lift takedown for emphasis. Those kinds of tackles, especially in the open field like this one was, are actually a rarity in today's football.

I actually got a severe concussion from someone taking a cheap shot and hitting me in the head with the top part of their helmet. Played the rest of the game and felt fine. Long story short I feel asleep, woke up in a different state, and had to learn how to walk again. That was going on 18 years ago and I still suffer from that injury. Football is so much fun but obviously very dangerous!

I played all of my life and I don't know anyone who had a concussion or feels any effects from American football. Cte is pure, made up theory by a couple of fame-seeking scientists with zero evidence proving it exists.

As has been mentioned, when most of these were filmed the hits were completely legal. Players are still trying to adapt to the new stricter rules because all of their football lives they were encouraged to go out and "Knock somebody's head off!"

Thing is, the pads make it less safe. Rugby because you wear nothing it’s more wrap tackle based. You put guys in armour and give them a big helmet at THEY are willing to launch themselves like missiles. You’re more aware when you’re unprotected and play as such.

The block at the beginning of the video is not legal. You can't block towards your own endzone. It is called a Crack back block. I loved doing it while playing but illegal now.
When you realize the sheer size of these guys, it's all the more impressive. Most of them are about 2 meters in height and at LEAST a hundred kilos. And their speed and agility is just crazy, considering their size. Just top notch athletes all around. As teenagers we used to play full contact football without Any padding but the clothes your wearing. I never broke anything in these games but I know others that have, a little Titanium bone bracing surgery and you're good as new, that is till you get older and start feeling all those hits when getting up in the morning.
In 1984, Chicago Bears vs LA Raiders, Bears' QB Jim McMahon had a season ending injuries: bruised ribs and lacerated kidney. This game was one of most violent games in NFL history.
The Body Bag game between the Eagles and Redskins was pretty bad too. Eagles players were getting paid extra to knock players out of the game. It's something Buddy Ryan often did to incentivize his guys taking opposing players out of the game by any means.

Football can be a very brutal sport.
The padding in football is a weapon. The helmets especially. They’re made of foam padded hard plastic, the face masks are made of iron covered with rubber. When you put on a football helmet it makes you want to use the helmet as a battering ram.
Think of the shoulder pads as weapons, rather than protection. You're not allowed to hit with the top of the helmet. QBs get extra protections from the rules due to their importance. Most important man on the team.

Yup I’m Canadian and was no football where I lived growing up so no one owned equipment, guess we coulda put our hockey shoulder pads on haha, but we’d always play tackle as kids/young teens with nothing on whether it was 4 v 4 6 v 6 what have you.

These were all clean hits. Part of the game is maintaining the ball through a catch, so hitting the shit out of a receiver or runner is really common.
Face masking like that has always been a penalty.
@@srellison561 Ironically enough, with the exception of THAT play. At the time, "helmets" were just a leather headcap - there was no protection around the face, hence no concept of a face mask. It was only around the time of that particular game when some quarterbacks began wearing a single iron bar over the front of their face, as seen on that quarterback in that play. But since they were so new, there were no rules about them, and so grabbing that bar was not, strictly speaking, against the rules. There just hadn't been a reason for such a rule. Until then, that is.

I played football through High School and rugby through College. Rugby is definitely the harder sport overall - even the big boys in the pack need to be fit enough to run up and down the pitch. But, what you get in Football that you don't in Rugby is the hyper-specialization of skill and physical training. A 250lb MLB isn't going to to keep up on the pitch, but that's because he's been training since puberty to turn his body into a machine designed to deliver one explosion of force in a split second. A rugby team is made of athletes that can lean into a specific role, but everyone exists within a tighter band of overall strength and fitness standars. A football team is a machine made of tools designed to do specific jobs so theres a broader variance in skills, strength, fitness. The other difference is the common-sense tackling rules that Rugby's always had which Football is slowly starting to move towards. My highschool football coach encouraged us to play rugby in the Spring because rugby teaches you how to properly execute an open-field tackle. In a similar way that gloves encourage harder hits in boxing over bareknuckles, football pads encourage players to throw their bodies like a human punch as opposed to properly getting low and wrapping-up. Rugby gave me stitches and scars, but football gave me broken bones.

Back in the not so distant past they didn't understand the gravity of head trauma. Seems silly now but that's the fact. They actually used to tell guys to lead with their helmet on tackles. Now absolutely no head shots are legal and you have to tackle with your shoulder not your helmet.
If they really wanted to eliminate head shots they would play without helmets like Rugby does. No helmet and you are going to be a lot more careful about your head and anyone else's.
Nope head shots are not legal anymore. Still happen accidentally though quite often( accident or not still a penalty, too rough or seemingly avoidable, you are kicked from the game, maybe more, and fined, or even kicked out of the league, so to speak. I’m always amazed when one of these videos pop up in my feed, and it’s Brits being surprised by the basic concept of the game?
Yes, you CAN hit any player on the field at any time, essentially as hard as you want or are able to, provided you don’t target the head (rule change within the last ten years).
And there are some additional new protections for QB’s, where you have to be really careful about hitting them when they don’t have the ball. That’s it.
Other than that, the defense is trying to get to the ball or player with the ball by any means necessary (within reason) and the offense is trying to advance the ball to score.
On every play that occurs, almost every player is involved in contact with the other players. The offense is hitting the defensive players and blocking them back, the defense is hitting the offensive players to penetrate and tackle the player with the ball or take the ball.
It is not uncommon for two players who are otherwise uninvolved in the play-don’t have the ball or aren’t tackling the player with the ball-to absolutely smoke one another. On defense it helps to knock an offensive player down because that means less protection. On offense it’s good to knock a defensive player down because then there are less defenders.
A hit can come anytime from any direction, but offensive players can’t hit defensive player from behind. That’s a penalty if it’s caught. The helmet has to be in front of the body to push or hit a defender.
A defender can get away with hitting from behind if they are making a tackle or seen as attempting to make a play on the ball or attempt to tackle a player.
The defense can also get away with grabbing and holding players (but you can’t hold a receiver past 5 yards down field. And you can’t blatantly hold an offensive player down. It’s rarely called, but if a defensive player is blatantly holding an offensive player down, typically a lineman, defensive holding will be called. But most of the time, if you are able to grab and throw someone out of the way or off you, that is legal in defense).
The offense can NOT grab or hold. Which is why you see clips in this video offensive players annihilating defensive players off ball. They can hit or block them, but they can’t hold or grab them like a defensive player might do to get an offensive player out of the way. The offense can’t do that. They can only hit or push with open hand.
Rugby and American football are both sports requiring an incredible amount of toughness. The best way I've heard it explained is rugby is a physical, contact sport and football is a collision sport. Football is about who can be the most explosive and violent in 5 seconds, whereas rugby is about who can be consistently physical and tough over a grueling 40 minute half.
I had a couple of friends from the UK when attending high school in Houston, TX. They would often talk about how tough rugby players were for not wearing protective gear. In American football, there has to be gear because the men who weigh 250 lbs in the NFL run 4.5 second 40 yard dashes. The impacts of their hits are like small auto collisions.

A while back, I was watching a sports science type show that measured the tackle force between American Football, Rugby, and I think the third sport was Australian Rules Football I'm not sure. But the test revealed that American Football players hit with much more force than the other sports. It was said to be because American Football players are padded and the subconscious effect of that was that they're more likely to play with reckless abandon. Hockey pads have a similar effect. After some of those guys get enough momentum built up, you can potentially skate faster than you can run, the hits are just...WOW!!
Today, a player is considered defenseless at a certain point so a lot of those hits would be illegal today. With the players becoming stronger and faster over the years, also with retired players developing CTE, new rules and equipment have been introduced to American football.

Just discovered your channel. I always enjoy watching British reacting to football hits. It's an absolutely brutal sport. I played in high school and a few years in the semi pros. At 40 years old, some days I struggle to walk just from the damage my body has taken.
I only played a year of HS football, but one of the things i took away from it (I'm a couple years older than you) was an understanding of the adrenaline high that comes from hitting something (or more specifically someone) absolutely as hard as you can without withholding any sort of consideration for self-protection. The very first time I correctly tackled someone in a live game setting, helmet on the ball and shoulder in the gut, in the open field when we both had time to accelerate, is one of the clearest memories I've got from high school 25 years later.
It convinced me pretty quickly that everyone in this thread who talks about how the pads and protection of football really dial up the level of violence.
I feel pretty fortunate I got to only play a year and come away understanding the experience without having the repetitive wear and tear of the game on my body and my brain. I'm glad I did it, and also glad I didn't play 7-12 like I did basketball. I can understand why that pure adrenaline rush of going 100% without holding anything back can be addictive.
One of the crazy things about football to me is the younger guys who play in junior high and high school, there are some nasty hits even at that level. I saw a lot of broken bones, (usually arms) and lots of people down for the count after getting stuck!

Yup, I suffered numerous concussions in high school. Nowadays there are protocols teams must follow but when I played we were still very much in the "walk it off" mentality. I still struggle with the decision that if I have kids would I allow them to play football?

The best part o being at a NCAA or NFL level game is hearing the hits. There is a loud crack of the pads and the whole crowd goes oooohh! You can hit a player who is chasing the ball carrier. He has to have a good chance of tackling the runner. You must keep all your eyes wide open at all times. Good job guys!
As a Polynesian born and raised in the US, we Islander's grew up playing both rugby and football heavily because we're first generation American. Rugby as tough and as brutal as it can be, is much more safe because of hitting regulations. I've had to explain it to my family overseas who used to make fun of football. This is why we wear gear. And the gear don't really do much to be honest haha. But rugby is a contact sport. A gentleman's game. Football is a collision sport. A sinister game. We dont play to hurt other's.... sometimes. Ps. The head to head collisions have recently been stopped because players over recent years have developed CTE and committing suicide as a result. And yes, the hit you don't see coming is always the one that hurts more.
Regarding picking a team:
The NFL finance and wage structure makes it so that all the teams are quite a bit more equal. It's much more like every NFL team is like a solid, mid-table Premier League team. No "Big Six" (or seven now with Newcastle). And no Relegation fodder. Everyone is like the West Ham-Villa-Wolves-Palace, mid-table range. So when you do have an Everton (or Sunderland or West Brom) that drops waaaaay low, or a Brentford or Fulham (or Blackpool or Huddersfield) that skyrockets waaaay up, it's pretty normal. Like in mid-table where you win one week and those three points move you up 5 places and you think Europe is possible -- and then next week you lose three points and drop and are afraid of relegation. In other words -- You will NEVER be able to pick an NFL team because you think they're Real Madrid or Barcelona, Bayern or PSG. That's not how the NFL is set up.
So, really, you should pick the MINNESOTA VIKINGS! The greatest team in the universe (arch-rivals to the bears and packers). But only if you support Arsenal. If you pathetically support the totty chickens or manch-divided then we don't want you supporting the Great VIKINGS!

The rate of CTE for american football players is off the charts. Basically, back in the day in particular, they didn't really understand the compounding effects of concussions nor did they realize how easy one can get them especially in a contact sport. So when most of these hits were legal and when helmet hitting was somewhat encouraged you would see some pretty devastating consequences. They have done a couple movies on the CTE rates in the NFL.
I’ve read a comment that someone said that rugby is a CONTACT sport and American football is an IMPACT sport. Those guys are hitting each other with the force of a literal car crash.

The main push for more safety rules in the NFL came in the last decade or so, so any clips that appear to be before that time based on camera quality are much more likely legal hits at the time

Rugby is a rough sport, lotsa respect for you guys. Football is different in that we have two lines that oppose each other instead of following the ball down the line laterally. Enjoyed the video!

headshots are generally illegal but there is leeway given when it cant be avoided. however in recent years they have really been cracking down on targeting the head. previously it was just a 15 yard penalty but in recent years players have just been getting ejected for it

Most of the big hits occur because the defenders are try to separate the ball carrier from the ball, or the offense are protecting the ball carrier.
The size of these players is often most spoken about. It is rarely spoken about the speed at which these large athletes are moving. In 2012 at the NFL scouting combine, Dontari Poe, who is 6 feet 5 inches tall, weighed 346lbs at the time, ran the 40 yard dash in 4.98 seconds. That's a very large man moving very quickly.
my old coach used to tell us if you think your stronger than em take em out the game, if your not take out their knees. he didn't realize how strong the team was until there were 7-8 injuries a game
Just an aside all the "Wrestling Moves" the one where the player pogo sticks the offensive player that jumped (a Spinebuster in Pro wrestling) and the Belly to back style suplex (which has many names but is normally called a German Suplex in Pro Wrestling vernacular) are both legal, and encouraged at every level of football.
There was actually a game played once called the body bag game. Was between the Eagles and Redskins. The game used to be a lot more violent. They have made lots of rules to make players safer now.
In college football there's a rule called Targeting, where one player deliberately targets the head. In most conferences, if they catch you doing it you're ejected from the game and could miss half of the next game.

It wasn't in this video, but a major hit that motivated rule changes or increased fines for hitting defenseless wide recievers happened to a player for the Cardinals named Boldin. Two players on the opposing team (Jets) dove at him like missiles and basically sandwiched his head with theirs. It caused a facial fracture and a broken jaw. Boldin had to get wires put into his mouth to fix his bite so he could eat/drink normally again.

That old film of the neck tackle was coined a "clothes-line" tackle. Which was legal for long time in the NFL.
I was knocked out completely during a tackle while playing linebacker. And woke up with an excruciating headache a few seconds later. I never missed a play and played the entire game. That’s the way it was 25 years ago in high school. You were taught to walk off concussions.

There used to be a saying for these hits. Not sure if I've heard it in a while but..."de-cleating" a player is pretty much what you see. Hitting so hard you remove their cleats from the ground. Many of the hits you see in this video, the ones where someone is running to tackle and doesn't see the blocker coming, are now illegal.

I got blindsided once, dude got me on my shoulder pads so it wasn't as painful as it looks. I was running after the ball carrier and out of nowhere I saw sky then grass. It was a bit fun spinning in the air like that, but then I hit the ground 😆

As for the guy in the white and green that you asked if he was out, that hit broke his back and ended his career. A lot of those hits were legal at the time, including the facemask tackle, but are now illegal.

These clips were compiled over a good number of years. Most of these hits today, would get you penalized, and or ejected, and or fined, and or suspended.
When you play football, the best way to think about a hit is that each one is about as traumatic as a small car accident. If you can just let yourself go limp in a hit, you don't really feel it, and you can pop right up. So for like a running back, they have the equivalent of 20 or so small car accidents per game. These men play 18 games a season, and often play injured. Football destroys the body and brain, but it's the greatest game on earth. It's a war game.

I got hit in the rib cage freshman year of high school (I'm 28 now) and still haven't healed. Also tore every ligament in my foot which also is still messed up. Beautiful sport but so dangerous

A lot of the bad concussions come from the head hitting the ground as opposed to the player v player contact especially in the 70’, 80’s, and early 90’s when the old Astroturf was still being used. That was nothing but a very thin carpet stretched over concrete.
Please keep in mind that a defensive NFL player under 400 US LBS is considered to be a small player.

This is a compilation of NFL, college, high school and little league(kids 12 and under). These were before all the rule changes for helmet to helmet contact. Yes the hits were legal when this was put together.
Helmet to helmet contact was outlawed in 1996. Lowering the helmet to make a tackle became a penalty in 2018. Tackling by grasping the facemask is the facemask is a penalty.

It depends on the context when it comes to helmet to helmet being legal or not. So lets say a receiver is going up to catch the ball if he's hit in the helmet at all before he can defend himself its a defenseless receiver penalty. But if a receiver catches the ball and gets around 2 steps or puts his arm up to defend himself then its more than likely gonna be fine but sometimes at the end of the day it can also depend on the reffs.

I can 100% guarantee you wanna be running full speed toward someone rather than take a blindside hit. Those blindside hits are the most brutal because you don’t expect it, at least if I’m running full speed toward someone I can put my head down and try to barrel through them.
Some of these camera angles are hard to see well enough to know whether it's "shoulder to shoulder" or "helmet to helmet." Also, there are situations where a player is presumed to expect a hit and other where a player is presumed to be "defenseless." There is a category of foul called "unnecessary roughness" where it's clear that making contact would not have changed the outcome of the play. For example, tacking an opponent when they are already out of bounds, intentionally crashing into a player who is already down, tackling a player after they have obviously lost possession of the ball, etc. Likewise, certain hits and tackles are illegal if they come too early, like before the ball arrives to a receiver, though these are usually levied as "interference", "illegal contact" or the like.
Much of the "used to be legal" stuff you were speculating on is covered by expanded rule definitions in the above areas.
Sometimes teams decide it is strategically valuable to commit a foul because they are willing to pay the penalty yardage. Several new rules have cropped up making most of these punishable by additional "unsportsmanlike conduct" sanctions (including ejection) to further deter teams from committing too many willful fouls. You do see teams still take occasional intentional fouls, but these days it's mostly "delay of game" and generally not roughness. The league has even cracked down on abuse of game delays in recent years.
As for concussion protocols, those mostly have to do with how a player who suffered a hit or jolt is evaluated to determine if they need to be removed from the game for further medical attention. In many injury situations, self-reporting players have incentive to "push the limits" to get back on the field. However, for some injuries this can seriously compound the medical danger, so the recent protocols call for an independent concussion expert to evaluate players according to strict guidelines. This hopefully removes the temptation for players to gamble with safety.

There was a nfl qb a few years ago playing with ligament damage from his lower leg all the way up and down his hand making his throwing hand numb, a cracked vertebrae, broken rib, sprained shoulder, torn ligament in his ankle, strained quad and multiple nerve injuries to his neck

Rugby is a contact sport. Football is a collision sport--AND the players are bigger, stronger and faster than rugby players (check out video on 10 current athletic freaks in the NFL). A famous Rugby player tried out for an NFL team as he had been a good runner in pro Rugby and he said that after the first practice--not actual game--he had been hit harder than anytime in his career playing rugby. Football is about smashing the guy, not just tackling him, as there are fewer opportunities than in Rugby to get the ball back in your possesion. Also, the equipment--should pads etc., are a basis to hit harder, they are weaponized. It is also why people playing football get injured more frequently and (much) more severly than in Rugby.
Back when football was football, you're not good if you play defense and never had a concussion. I only played corner in highschool and had a few, but then again I'm from Florida 😂
Many of these players get up and run back to the huddle. In soccer, the player gets kicked in the calf and is down for minutes, often rolling in "pain".
I played rugby and football in college. The difference is the size & speed of the players, and the collisions in football. The players are massive, fast, and when they collide, its brutal. Rugby is rough in a different way. There's a lot of "dirty" in fighting in those scrums and there are less refs to see the illegal stuff. There could be anything from punches, to biting, to head butting. Add to that the fact that there are no breaks in plays and you just keep running. In the USA, at first, a lot of the rugby players were former football players so we tended to play as if we still had pads sometimes but that's not good for longevity. You will see Rugby players playing longer because they tend to "turtle tackle", letting the player run into them and dragging him down. You don't see as many bone jarring collisions as in football. It doesn't matter if you have a helmet, because of the G forces, your brain still collides with the inside of your skull. Also, the pads protect your shoulders but not your abdomen or back. The helmet can be used as a weapon, but they have been outlawing hits with the helmet little by little for 20 years because the tackler can be paralyzed if he hits with the top of the head, or he can give himself and the other player concussions. Two great sports in their own way.

2. You can't "target" by hitting top of the helmet to the top of the helmet
3. Any other hit's are OK (except back blocks below the knee)
You need to watch NFL Defying Gravity. Some pretty amazing plays on there... hurdling and doing flips over other guys, etc.

American Football perfectly demonstates what happens when an unstoppable force collides with an immovable object.
The first time you pause it and ask if it's legal. The guy that got hit was injured rest of season and they made a rule about "blindside blocks" because of it.
The difference, (between American Football and Rugby) is, the pads American players wear, which make them feel indestructable... so they turn themselves into guided missiles. That can make them overconfident though, and lead to more injuries.
Rugby players still have to protect their own bodies.
Many people in the US actually think that an answer to the concussion problem in the sport is to take away the facemask. It may sound counter-intuative, but taking away the facemask will force players, by natural reaction, to avoid head to head hits.
Oh... and what you're calling a "scrape down", is called facemasking over here. It was a common thought when facemasks were introduced , that it's a part of the player, if he wants to wear it. It was quickly changed. As was "Horsecollaring", or grabbing another player by the back of his pads, and pulling him down.
American football has evolved. At one point all that was legal. With the advancement of these athletes the rules had to change to protect the players from themselves. Helmet to helmet can get you ejected now. American Football has never been a contact sport. It's always been a collision sport.
