  • The Sheldonian Theatre is a prime Oxford University building: it is where the students become members and it is where they receive their degrees: matriculation and graduation. A17th century construction it was designed by the famous architect Christopher Wren and sits proudly alongside the oldest edifices of the University. In this video you will be introduced to its baroque architecture, its placement in the city and its many functions. It is said to be based on the Theatre of Marcellus in Rome and is protected by a row of bearded 'emperors. It is adjacent to the Clarendon Building and the History of Science Museum and faces the Divinity School and Bodleian Library.
