  • This video is the second part of this advance portrait painting tutorial. In this lesson we are discussing basic color theory, adding texture with an airbrush, as well as a brief history of realism from an art history standpoint.
    Since this tutorial is all about painting portraiture, I tried to go into as much detail as possible about using a limited palette to create a convincing painting, without the video being too long. I hope this helps anyone who is learning how to paint or airbrush!
    If you have any questions, please feel free to leave them below so that I can get back to you. Thanks for watching.
    Mentioned in this video:
    Part One of This Tutorial- • Learning how to paint ...
    How to Paint Lips- • How to Paint Realistic...

      I agree. I Love the amount of detail you show. Every video you have continuously p pulls me in to it. I along with probably 99 percent of your subs would def watch even if your videos were longer. You are without a doubt thre most knowledgeable teacher on this platform. Maybe I shouldn't say that because then you'll start charging lol. Bottom line is I love you work and thre way you present your information. Ive said it NUMEROUS times, but thank you for everything

    Great video thanks, just starting out with airbrushing after concentrating on colored pencils. As I will be practising techniques initially can you recommend any airbrush papers which will stand up to the Exo knife and eraser

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop  Рік тому

      thanks! moving from drawing (colored pencils or graphite) to airbrush is the best way to do it in my opinion. You'll pick up the airbrush fast.
      My two favorites are Legion heavy Yupo paper and arches hot pressed paper. I always put 2 layers of gesso on them before painting and both are very tough. Legion would be the more durable one, so that would be a good place to start.

      My Spanish is not so good, so I use canvas with multiple layers of gesso. For the paint, I use createx illustration colors. Hope this helps!

    Nice work man. I notice you using dru blair stencils have you tried his classroom in a box and if so what do you think about them are they worth the money and which ones would you recommend..

    • @theartworkshop

      I am a big fan of Dru Blair's teachings and airbrush shields. His color theory classroom in a box is outstanding. Truly one of the best approaches to color I've ever seen. He is one of the inventors of this style of painting, so anything you get from him is worth it. Best of luck!!

      Thank you for your reply. Dru is an amazing artist, I watched a great interview with him the other week and it made me understand why the prices of his classroom in a box seem expensive but the work he puts into them you realize they ain't that expensive, i,'ve read so many good reviews about the colour theory box and with you pointing it out also I think that will be my first purchase. Thank you so much and keep up the great work your doing..

    Hello. What paper is most suitable for airbrushing?

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop  19 днів тому

      Hey Patrick- lots of great papers out there. Synthetic paper is a popular option (a brand like lana vanguard is very good). One of my favorite papers is a 100% cotton paper like strathmore 500 series plated (hot pressed board) or arches hotpress watercolor paper. However, my favorite surface is canvas smoothed out with gesso.

    Hey brother Mark maybe you can help me I’m doing nothing but eyes. I’m having a little problem making them look like GLASS. I know that I have to practice that’s what I’m doing. Is there a technique to get your eyes to look Glassy. Help me please I wish I could send you a photo then you’ll know exactly what I’m doing wrong. My eyes are pretty people that’s what people tell. I’m also trying to get that IRIS pattern!!!🎣🎣🎣

    • @theartworkshop
      @theartworkshop  Рік тому

      excellent idea to work on one part of the portrait! Thats one of the best ways to learn. They key to that glassy or wet look is dark values right next to very light ones. So if you add black to paint in the pupil, erase a very bright highlight next to it and that contrast will give you the effect. I talked about this in my still life hammer painting video. Check that one out Michael! I go into everything I'm talking about here in that one.
