The UN also shares responsibility. The UN Committee which decided on the partition of Palestine Mandate, against the legal principle of Uti possidetis juris, had NO Arab representation at all. At best 42% if the population of Palestine in 1947 was Jewish, nearly 20% of whom were there illegally. 90% were the result of immigration in the previous 25 years and they owned about 14% of the land area, almost all of it bought with diaspora money from non-local owners. Yet the UN gerrymandered two states that gave 58% of the land to Israel. One state (Palestine) was to be almost 100% Arab, while the other (Israel) was to be 48% Arab and 52% Jewish. 80% of the Arab population of the latter was then driven from its homes by a series of village massacres that killed about 800 Palestinian Arab civilians by the embryonic Israeli army and never allowed to return. The UN has had an obligation to return them to their homes ever since but instead has kept their situation in stasis by just providing for them as refugees.

The more you delve into the Middle East history the more you realise the Palestinians have been treated appallingly by the colonial powers & the terrorist Israeli government.
What is missing in this discussion was that there existed an internationally recognised legal doctrine; 'the right of conquest', which recognised that land dispossessed by force of arms became the property of the conquering state. The people that occupied the conquererd lands became the subjects of the conqueror which does not mean that those people had any rights to the land, ownership of land or citizenship. All the land conquerors could be legally used as the conqueroring stated pleased and the population on the land simply became ensalved to the conquering state. The state may make arrangements with existing leaders or headman in order to utilise the land or control the population but did not confer power to the indigienous population. Once the Ottoman Empire was conquered and its lands taken - that was it, nobody that had lived on the land had any legal rights at all.
It wasn’t an arrangement, it was a contract, a treaty made with the indigenous population which the British are in violation of. Does the right of conquest supersede treaties or contracts entered into by the conquering party?
You may say that Britain was a rat, but that doesn't bear directly on Israel's present response. How could or should Britain have dealt with the age old smouldering resentment and bitterness that still lives in the Levant?

Palestine never existed and never will exist

If only Britain honoured their agreements. It has now come back to haunt them.
You may say that Britain was a rat, but that doesn't bear directly on Israel's present response. How could or should Britain have dealt with the age old smouldering resentment and bitterness that still lives in the Levant? Are you assuming that the British ought to have solved the problems created by the Ottoman Empire's choice to join with Germany?
Men who did not know one another sent to kill each other, by those who knew each other very well. An imperial war desired by the rulers of Germany, Britain, Russia and France. Capitalism, motivated by lust for raw materials, petroleum, markets and cheap labour. A contest between two blocks of imperial powers, Britain, France, Czarist Russia, (Triple entente) and the German Reich and Ottomans. The empire of the 'sick man of europe' too much to resist. The first war for Oil, then so crucial to naval propulsion. Britain could n't wait and had planned from 1911 to occupy Basra in event of war on the Ottomans. Near completion of the Baghdad to Berlin railway in 1914. In the after-sacks Sykes-Picot carve up Britannia secured the prize oil rich (now Iraq) and desired Palestine, a long coveted treasure point which would support jewel in the crown, India.

What structure is under the Grand Mosque in Jerusalem?
All the problems could have been resolved if the Arabs had allowed the Palestinians to take part in the UN Commission set up to resolve these issues at the onset, even if it meant insisting on whatever was acceptable to them as compromise. Arabs cannot now leave the Palestinians alone to face the consequences.
If you are referring to the first UN peace conference at Lausanne in 1949, then you are wrong. The Palestinians were full partners in the Arab delegation. If you can find President Truman's message to Ben Gurion of May 28 or 29 of 1949, then you will read his sense of betrayal by the Israelis, who refused to negotiate under the terms of the Lausanne Protocol which they had signed in order to gain admittance to the UN.
@@johngeren1053 Thanks. By the time of Lausanne in 1949 the damage had been done. Initial UN efforts through UNSCOP in May 1947 was boycotted by the Arabs. Its report gave Israel the leeway to legitimise its UDI.
It was a catastrophic error by the Arabs. How can there be such an important deliberation on your assets and you boycott it. After the war of 1948 there was certainly going to be a huge difficulty in getting Israel to shift its position on any issue. It is sad, but events of the past have a lot of bearing on the present.
