@ooconnor just known as a five-stringed violin, any special name for it would be the name of the model by the maker. a viol is a baroque era cello type instrument, and a viola is a different type of instrument, like a violin but a string lower. :)
this instrument looks like a Thomas Perry zither viol with a chopped down neck to 5 strings from a 10 string model, though he did make one with 6 strings, he died in 1818

oops i spotted a mistake the instrument is called a cither viol invented by Thomas Perry in about 1767, can be called a Quinton 5 string, Paul

Did you notice his violin has 5 strings. Is there a name for that - 'viol' or 'viola' or something?
