Keb pockets and ventilation are more difficult to open because it has taped zippers. I find it quite odd that bergtagen does not have these as it is supposed to be a shell for mountaneering.
Can you wear a regular g1000 keb or bertagen jacket underneath either of these ecoshell jackets in the same size? I'm wondering because I know that the keb ecoshell pants fit overtop of a pair of keb trousers.
I suppose you could, however I think it would be a bit too much with hoods and all, a fleece or some sort of middle layer is what I’d recommend if you’re looking for warmth, even a thinner down jacket would fit. Once you start to move you are often times good to go with just a T-shirt or a long sleeved base layer! Hope that answers your question buddy!
@@TedWeirum I think that the designers could have made it so that these duel jackets fit each other and that is why the shell is so light weight. You can easily pack the shell into a side carrying bag. It is my impression that I am to attempt to complete the outfit, so far having keb trousers and keb ecoshell pants. Now I need the top half. The jacket to wear is the keb or bertagen jacket and when it is harder conditions than add the ecoshells. Ofcourse people will do other things but at least it might be understood that this is the way to complete these two families of clothing. I myself have a snug fitting keb ecoshell anarok but I did not conceive of this before I bought that but it's okay, I can go in the opposite direction with the anorak no. 8 as the outer coat, it works.
Hi Ted, thanks for your video. it is great and useful. I have a question need your support, Are these two jackets the same size as M? (Fjällräven Bergtagen Eco-shell with the Keb Eco-shell)
I would go with the Bergtagen over Keb. I have orange Bergtagen and Teal Keb. Love them both but I feel safer in the orange since in bad weather you see it better. One big miss for all of the fjällräven jackets are the lack of reflectors. Given that it should be a no brained since a reflector is the “cheapest health insurance” as they say. Also the Bergtagen trousers have no way to adjust the height or tightness of the leg-ends. I find it very weird since I’m average height of woman (165) and the trousers are made for some 175-185cm person. So I have to use strap-around to keep the extra 15cm leg-end from getting under my shoes. Quite frustrating to be honest. But discarding those, they are very very very good clothes.
I understand your point but keb is made for use in the forest and so reflectors are not that important of course if you wan't a reflector just add one. For me (owning a keb jacket) I don't want a reflector on it since it affects the way it looks negatively.
Ted Weirum You have such so good comparison video that there is not much to add. Btw, awesome camera drives and angles. I had to check out your other videos and now you have one subscriber more! Keep up the good work! Maybe you can utilize more of your family the since I have a feeling there is not many channels that are looking the hiking from the family perspective. Or maybe not, it’s up to you and your family. Just a thought.
Post Marlone your argument is intriguing since I found my self debating about it but obviously I was too biased since I could not find enough arguments against reflectors particularly in non-camouflage Fjällräven product. Could you be so kind and describe more how it effects negatively: What was you initial thought when one is talking about a reflector. Your argument may be the key why Fjällräven decided not to use only Reccos but not “cat’s-eye” reflectors.
Nice video thanks. The one thing that stops me buying either jacket is they look so flimsy. After spending all that money I can imagine striking the ferro rod and burring a whole in the jacket on the first outing, haha.
Great vid! Just got the Bergtagen for 2500 nok. It will supplement my Mountain Equipment Lhotse jacket quite well. I'm sure it's heavier than other jackets but the build is solid.
@SKiiTTLe5 hmm.. that might be the case then, I know that the bergtagen eco shell trousers come in navy blue and orange, maybe have a look at those and see if they match?
Hej Ted, I Haven't talked to you for a while and hope you're safe!!! Question for you... I have been comparing a few shells for my long-distance hiking trips. I hate jackets that "Wet-Out" I have been looking at Arcteryx, Fjallraven, Mammut, Mountain Hardwear, and Norrona. As you know, I love FJ. In your experience, is the Keb Eco and Bergtagen really waterproof and will keep you dry? Like hiking Northern Sweden and Finland? Tack!
Hey brother, nice to hear from you again! In my experience the Keb and bergtagen jackets have kept me dry even in the heaviest rains, as you can see in one of the clips in the review for the Keb ecoshell jacket it’s pouring down, still we were completely dry underneath the shell!
Hi, very nice video ! What is the feeling against cold temperature (I mean up to 0°C) with these jackets (particulary the Keb Eco Shell) without a special mid layer ?
That’s all down to what you’re doing, I wouldn’t be standing still with just one of these jackets, they’re meant to be used with midlayers in colder conditions.
Hello, i am French sorry for my english, what is difference bergtagen jacket or bergtagen jacket eco shell ? Bergtagen jacket eco shell put use on winter season ?
I recently purchased the Keb eco shell and I'm super disappointed. Went to climb Kebnekaise (Sweden's highest mountain) on a rainy/windy day, and I couldn't get the hood to stay on my head for more than a couple of seconds. The wind was hitting directly on my face and it would push the visor up/back yanking the hood out of my head. I tried to adjust it every way possible but as I said, it wouldn't stay put at all. I also noticed that the drawcords on the sides would loosen up pretty quickly as the hood was pushed back by the wind. They don't have those plugs/toggles, I wonder if I am missing something here and there is a way to keep them fastened? I used to have a much cheaper jacket from Fjällräven (discontinued) and the so-called "storm hood" worked great. Too bad that they kinda fucked up the design on this model, especially at this price tag.
And to add to this I haven't seen a single video or review of the jacket being tested against actual wind (15m/s, 20m/s gusts?) in the mountains. Especially on a climb when you are at an angle and the wind will hit the visor from the under side. If you know of such review, please let me know!
hmm, it shouldn't be like that, I haven't had the experience that you mention and I have been out in windy conditions. just a shot in the dark here, have you tightened it on the back of the hood? there's a drawcord on the back of the head that you use for securing it to your head. you should also be able to use the drawcords in the front to secure the hood. maybe we can talk on instagram instead and we can share some photos to better understand? you'll find me at instagram.com/tedweiurm
@@TedWeirum Well that´s cool. I just wasted 290 dollars on the wrong jacket :/. Bought one that was used one time for half the price... cant even return it.
@@TedWeirum I bought the one without eco shell. I wanted a water proof jacket. I red on fjallravens homepage that it was, unfortunately I didn't notice there were two very similar jackets... shit happens.
With proper layering, would you say the KEB ECO-SHELL JACKET is a solid jacket for every day winter use? I live in WI and our Winters can be a bit brutal with negative degree weather. I currently use the Greenland No 1 down jacket but feel that the ECO shell is much more of a snug option for me. What do you suggest?
How long will the keb eco shell be waterproof. I think 2 or 3 years max. I have a GoreTexPro (tnf) also and it's holding water now, not repellant anymore. Curious how long my eco shell will last.
I’ve had mine for a couple of Years now and I haven’t done anything to it and it still works just fine, gonna put some dwr on it soon though! I think I’m at three years with it now!
Why why why did not they include two regular side pockets??? This is the reason I am returning this jacket unfrotunately. It would be so great with those side pockets.
I understand, the reason is because this jacket is designed to be used with a hip belt backpack. There should be other options available on the website with pockets!
I will say, if you're using this as a hardshell for skiing or mountaineering, you rarely (never) end up with your hands in your pockets. Chest pocket is probably more accessible tbh. But to your point, it eliminates versatility for using it as a casual jacket (which is odd because let's be honest, we sometimes use our hardshells as regular spring jackets)
Correct, it’s because the hip belt of your backpack will get in the way of the pockets, it’s a less is more situation. The chest pockets however are still awesome and very roomy! Thanks for watching brother!
I just got back from a Fjallraven retail store and tried on the brand new Bergtagen Lite Eco Shell. It felt very Keb-like, and does not have the elbow patches. One thing I looked for because of this video was the velcro on the wrists. I am happy to report that they have changed the velcro amount such that you can fully cinch it down tight, in the way you describe at 7:18. They're listening to you, Teddy! I was also disappointed that all of the staff in the store pronounced Bergtagen in the "Bergshell" way and not "Baitagen" as us true and proper Swedes know how to do. Shame! 😉
@@TedWeirum You need to tell your Fjallraven hookup so we get a review! Honestly, it seemed alot like the Keb Eco Shell, except with only one chest pocket, though I still haven't been able to get my hands on a proper Bertagen Eco Shell to try. It's significantly less costly ($375) than either the Keb($500) or Bergtagen($550) which leads me to think its probably the least capable of the three.
Excellent info on both. Thanks Teddy! Neither Bergtagen nor Keb Eco (size L) fits me well (the chest 45"), sleeves too long with my 6'1, so a little bit downgraded myself to the Haglofs Astral jacket. No regrets yet.
@@uaedf I have never owned an Alpha. I considered it but didn't bother to buy it. It has gotten a lot of praise (one of the best outdoor garment there is). But I didn't like that it is so short on the waist. I lile jackets that covers your rear! Thats why I went for the Beta. And also because of the handpockets. It was longer than I anticipated. As for the Beta AR, it has a weird collar and hood. Don't like it. I went for SV as I wanted a bombproof shell. I realy like the Beta SV. Great jacket for allround use! The Alpha is more a niche jacket for climbers (so I've heard).
If you are going to buy one of these jackets online make sure you have a decent returns policy. The sizing on these jackets is bizarre and unless you are of a similar build to Ted more than likely it won't fit. The jacket the guy is using (keb version) is extremely under-sized on him IMHO so it looks like it fits. I am 5' 7" (1m 70cm) and got a small, the arms on my jacket are insanely long in proportion to the body of the jacket, well past being practical for climbing etc.. where slightly longer sleeves are of a benefit. Its a real shame as the jacket does look to be amazing quality but I am going to have to return it.
Sad to hear that it doesn’t fit you! I was able to try mine in store and it fit great, I had the possibility to try it with layers underneath as well and size M fit me. Hope you’ll find a jacket that suits you!
@@yuzhao5048 I got a full refund so it's no problem, you are probably right a size XS may be a better fit but the one I had was reduced quite a bit, at full RRP I will give it a miss.
Awesome! I was really considering getting the Keb until I saw that they use leather for the logo so I’m glad that they offer a similar jacket without the use of animal products!
I'm not 100% positive, but I believe Fjallraven only uses animal products that are from animals that were already dead, no harming any live animals involved.
@@TedWeirum The base fabric of the bergtagen is Fjallraven's g1000, which is 65% polyester/35% cotton. There are reinforcements on the jacket made of 94% polyamide (nylon)/ 6% aramid (kevlar.) The Keb M jacket's base material is 63% polyamide (again, nylon)/26% polyester/11% elastane, with the reinforcements on the Keb being g1000 eco (same composition as the Bergtagen's g1000, but lower environmental impact)
Yes, so true. I have the eco shell from fjallraven and is a peace of crap. Gets super easy wet, no protection at all. Water penetrates fast and if you don't have a nice thermals wind will blow you as well. For almost 500€ is a big down for the swedish brand. Everything what they make is design is Sweden and made in china or Taiwan, from 13-15 years old children, but nobody told you about that.

Keb pockets and ventilation are more difficult to open because it has taped zippers. I find it quite odd that bergtagen does not have these as it is supposed to be a shell for mountaneering.
I don’t know if it’s due to the snow, I’d love to meet the designers behind the products just to learn more!
Just wish tgere were 2 side hand pockets on both
I get what you mean, I'll be doing a review of a rain jacket that could be the solution for you! :) stay tuned
Good video. Thanks
Glad you liked it!
Which jacket is more suitable for summer time?
I’d say the Keb!
Ted,
I think you need to start giving bad reviews in an attempt to drop the price and increase availability.
Regardless, another great review.
Thanks.
CJ, I think you're on to something. always one step ahead and thinking outside of the box! it's a good idea though, I don't like everything! :)
Köszönjük!
Ok?
@@TedWeirum Of course, it was very useful video for me, thank you
Aha! Thanks! :) wasn’t sure what it meant! :)
Hi Ted, thanks for your video. it is great and useful. I have a question need your support, Are these two jackets the same size as M?
(Fjällräven Bergtagen Eco-shell with the Keb Eco-shell)
thanks! yes, correct! both are size M!
@@TedWeirum Thanks for your information, that is useful. I want to buy the Bergtahen Jacket but I worry about the length of jacket is too long.
I just got the keb, do you think it can make it for snowboarding?
Great video btw! 🙌
Thanks brother! Sure, I think it could!
i want to get the keb eco shell just scared of the price tag feels like a big commitment hahah
I understand that, it will last you a long time!
Hey! Thanks for your comment! Feature wise you think they’re the same or do you find big differences?
I understand your point but keb is made for use in the forest and so reflectors are not that important of course if you wan't a reflector just add one. For me (owning a keb jacket) I don't want a reflector on it since it affects the way it looks negatively.
Great point! I carry one with me all the time just in case I want to be seen but just like you I’m glad that it doesn’t have them
Ted Weirum You have such so good comparison video that there is not much to add.
Som vanligt en trevlig video. Du är duktig 🤜❤
härligt mor, vilken jacka ska du ha då? :P ❤️❤️
@@TedWeirum Haha... ingen 😁❤
Nice video thanks. The one thing that stops me buying either jacket is they look so flimsy. After spending all that money I can imagine striking the ferro rod and burring a whole in the jacket on the first outing, haha.
I have had the keb jacket, it is not flimsy! It took a lot of beating!
Thanks! I agree with Viktor, it can take a beating!
Great vid! Just got the Bergtagen for 2500 nok. It will supplement my Mountain Equipment Lhotse jacket quite well. I'm sure it's heavier than other jackets but the build is solid.
yeah, your'e probably right! build is solid so that'll make it worth it in the long run! :)
where did you get the jacket for that price? thanks...
thank you
Why doesn’t the Keb pant version come in any colors other than black…I have the Keb jacket in navy blue and would like to match them up
I think they do, where are you located?
@@TedWeirum I am in the states, Idaho specifically…online says the Keb eco shell waterproof pant only comes in black…maybe just for my size (medium)?
@SKiiTTLe5 hmm.. that might be the case then, I know that the bergtagen eco shell trousers come in navy blue and orange, maybe have a look at those and see if they match?
@@TedWeirum yeah they’re mountain blue I think or Hokkaido orange…neither match but oh well, sometimes that happens
I’m afraid so, it’s another thing with the regular trousers but the keb eco shell is a bit more rare!
Hi Ted. What is the colour of the Keb jacket you are wearing? Fog or Deep Forest? Thanks
Hey, it’s dark olive, don’t think they sell that color anymore
Ted Weirum which one feels more roomy to you?
I’d say the Bergtagen!
Bergtagen jacket eco shell put use on winter season ?
no worries friend, I'd say that the bergtagen eco shell is more water resistant than the bergtagen jacket. thanks for watching!
Is it only two available colours for Bergtagen?
Är det bara två tillgängliga färger på Bergtagen?
as far as I know yes!
Så långt jag vet så ja!
Now im confused... are there two types of Bergtagen jackets? One in eco shell and one in G1000 Lite?
Correct!
@@TedWeirum Well that´s cool. I just wasted 290 dollars on the wrong jacket :/. Bought one that was used one time for half the price... cant even return it.
Ok, was that the one with eco shell or without?
@@TedWeirum I bought the one without eco shell. I wanted a water proof jacket. I red on fjallravens homepage that it was, unfortunately I didn't notice there were two very similar jackets... shit happens.
It does my friend, it’s a good jacket still but it’s not the same as the eco shell.. sorry
Have u lappland eco shell ?
I have seen it but never tried it!
Hey! Yeah, absolutely! It’s so adaptable and there’s room for a thinner down jacket inside if need be. Happy 2020!
reat side by side review! Thank you.
Thanks bro!
How long will the keb eco shell be waterproof. I think 2 or 3 years max. I have a GoreTexPro (tnf) also and it's holding water now, not repellant anymore. Curious how long my eco shell will last.
I’ve had mine for a couple of
Years now and I haven’t done anything to it and it still works just fine, gonna put some dwr on it soon though! I think I’m at three years with it now!
Nice video, what are the colors of your two Jackets?
not sure of the bergtagen, the keb is olive green!
Agreed, we sure do!
For me personally it hasn’t been a big deal, but I can totally see what people mean!
No hand pockets? I’ll have to stick with my Paramo Helki and Pajaro. Be interested in your views if you can get your hands on them..
Correct, it’s because the hip belt of your backpack will get in the way of the pockets, it’s a less is more situation. The chest pockets however are still awesome and very roomy! Thanks for watching brother!
Ted Weirum Great videos,Ted. Keep them coming.
Thanks!
Shame! 😉
wow, really nice! I had no idea that they've made a lite version.. I feel the urge to tell someone.. :P
The keb one defo looks better
Agreed!
RECCO-reflex då? :)
har kollat närmre på det nu, tar med den funktionen i nästa video om bergtagen byxorna! tack!!
Thanks for this. I love Fjallraven clothing 👍
my pleasure brother!
Great comparison! Realy wanted a Bergtagen jacket. but the sizing is just not for my type! Went for a Arc'teryx Beta SV instead. Sorry fjällräven!
Excellent info on both. Thanks Teddy! Neither Bergtagen nor Keb Eco (size L) fits me well (the chest 45"), sleeves too long with my 6'1, so a little bit downgraded myself to the Haglofs Astral jacket. No regrets yet.
Thanks for watching! hope it works for you!
Konspirasjon How about Alpha AR or SV, how are these in comparison to the Beta SV??
@@Jallabird919 Any thoughts about your Arcyteryx now?
@@TedWeirum it's no big deal I am able to return it. Just a bummer as it's a really nice jacket. 👍
Sorry to hear it, I think you can have size XS, it is a really nice jacket.
@@yuzhao5048 I got a full refund so it's no problem, you are probably right a size XS may be a better fit but the one I had was reduced quite a bit, at full RRP I will give it a miss.
😁❤
Varför tittar du på denna nu? 🤪
@@TedWeirum den dök upp...❤
Spännande!
What is your chest size?
Enormous! I have no idea! Size M seems to fit me!
Awesome! I was really considering getting the Keb until I saw that they use leather for the logo so I’m glad that they offer a similar jacket without the use of animal products!
Really cool that you saw that and changed your mind!
I'm not 100% positive, but I believe Fjallraven only uses animal products that are from animals that were already dead, no harming any live animals involved.
I believe so too! :)
Both neither is worth that money it's nylon
Maybe you know something I don’t, how do you know that they are made of nylon?
Ok, that’s news to me. How do you know that? Is there any way you can prove what you’re saying about how they’re made?
I bought fjällräven products for more than 20.000 Danish kr I didn't regret any of them but eccoshell doesn't deserve to be expensive 😉
