Thought experiments help me learn. I'm trying to learn how to get really sturdy stairs. I dislike things flexing around me, even a little bit.
What techniques/designs would you use if somebody wanted ultra-low deflection, no-squeak stairs made out of wood, let's say so that they could tile over. Tile manufacturers require bending limited to L/720, or 1/15th of an inch deflection over 48" wide stairs.
Alternately/equivalently: If somebody asked for stairs for a fantasy person with a bodyweight of 1 ton?
I'm examining, for example, using 16" LVL side stringers and gluing together 2x4's to make a solid pine 3.5" rough tread (or 2x6's to make a solid 5.5" rough tread), then putting a finished hardwood topper on it. No center stringers and no risers to avoid squeaks.

It sounds like you want wood, but concrete might be better. I can't provide you with much of the suggestion, because I don't know how long or wide the stairway is and what you have to attach it to like walls on the sides or can you use walls underneath the stairway, but you can build a heavy duty stairway with large pieces of lumber like you are suggesting that won't move.

Is there a general code recommendation or requirement about a limit of the number of stairs one should use "cut out" stringers as opposed to using cleats?
I've seen quite a few videos where there are some really long cut out stringers that don't look particularly safe.

That's an excellent question, but I haven't found any building codes that provide any suggestions for lumber sizes or comparisons to lumber sizes in the notches cut out of them to form stringers. Let me know if this didn't answer your question.

Sounds like it would, but 6 inch riser might be better.

What is the way to extend threads from 9 to 10 inches? If I add a board to the riser on the top step to extend the previous thread, it eat in the next one, so I need to extend by double the next one, which of course eats in the next one...
