my friend makes the mixtapes on white cds and then draws intricate patterns on them, sunflowers, eyes, psychodelic stuff, with black marker. i wish one day to receive one made for me
I'm currently making a giant playlist for a friend who doesn't know much music and wants to hear more stuff. It's been a lot of fun to work on but also I am totally Rick rolling her during the 80s section!
I wasn't gonna do it, I had talked myself out of it, but then I mentioned it on twitter and my friends are terrible people who talked me back into it. You can see some of the development in my twitter feed over the last 48 hours.
I'm terrible with music, in all senses, and so I'm terrible at making playlists, because I can never remember what songs sound like or feel like or what they're called or if they'll go together or any of that. I mostly just let Pandora or pre-made spotify playlists do the work for me. When I'm in the car though, I almost exclusively listen to mixed CDs my best friend in high school made for me. I don't talk to her much anymore and they make me miss her even more, but they bring me back to the times that she made them, and they also definitely hold up. She knew what she was doing.
My favorite mixtape/CD I made was for a friend who was in hospital. I printed out all the guitar tabs to the songs so he would have something to do during his stay. I don't really remember the songs but I'm sure it was a lot of Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Fray lol. Also, totally agree with needing a good first and last song, that's something that drives me nuts on albums too.
man the phrase "printing out guitar tabs" brings be back so specifically to 2005-2006. And judging by the artists you named, sounds like this all happened in that era for you too haha
My friend made a playlist (not intentionally for me) but we spent all summer eating cheese in parks and listening to this playlist on repeat. Each song fits with the next so well that now when I hear one of the the songs on the playlist out of context, I keep singing the next song that should play. However it is titled "in the summer" oops...
since it is the best playlist I've ever heard and in case anyone is curious here is the spotify link open.spotify.com/user/1289509753/playlist/0h11yCJcEBv13iIROC7Qxh
this is cute! thanks for the end on a metaphorical high note tip! I'll be extra careful with it! i loved your story at the start lmaooo he dIDNTDESERVE U!!!
I have around one hundred mixtapes in my house dating all the way back to 1991...and they all still sound good! All this talk about mixtapes and playlists reminds me of a riddle. When is an iTunes library like a Super Saiyan? Give up? When it's OVER NINE THOOOUUUSAAAAANNNNND!!!!! For your information, the 9000th song I added was Joan Baez's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."
One mix CD/playlist that I'm still proud of was one I made for my ex-boyfriend. We sort of got together like two weeks before we each moved to a different country for a year (it wasn't our intention, it just happened), so the playlist is titled "Timing's a Bitch" and it has a theme of like journeying and distance and missing things, but in an optimistic way :) There was also a follow-up playlist called "Poem (let's be annoyingly happy)" made up of mostly happy love songs, where the song titles form a sort of love poem. That one was super cheesy but fun to make :D
Had a strong high school moment when thinking about mixtape titles like "rawr" and picturing some classic mix cds I received from friends in high school + college, notably one that I had to go to the post office in my college town to pick up because my friend made it an envelope and didn't put the right amount of postage on it.
i make so many playlists for my friends and partners. i usually just go with songs that remind me of them and plob them in their designated spotify playlist hahah i do move the songs around for the playlist to make sense. it's so much fun to do and i love giving people things ive made/put together, and the joy i hopefully bring them makes me so happy 😊💕 great video!
Ah yes the 1998 version of burning a CD I remember it well! I used to borrow CDs from the library and then burn them onto a blank tape or I would record from the radio. The day I discovered I could record my own voice was a good day from younger me but I fear the day I find that tape and actually listen to what I recorded :S
Sadly, I am just young enough to have missed the era of mixtapes, but this sounds super cool! The closest I've come is making a Spotify playlist for every song I like that mentions space 🚀 (I didn't get very far, haha)
Some thing I like to do when I make a mixtape for someone else I like to do what I like to call the hill method start chill then build and build songs up to get to the most hyped up beat or most meaningful song then build down the hill till a nice end if that makes sense
Dont you want to start with some short upbeat songs to get them pumped and then chill in the 2nd half. If someone gives me two 5-6 minute slow, chill songs to start, im probably tuning out.
I make playlist "mixtapes" on 8tracks. I like it better than spotify playlists because it forces you to listen to it in order without shuffling it (at least the first time through) and pay attention to transitions between songs and narrative throughout the playlist.
Towards the end of university, before my friend moved a few hours away we started exchanging mixtapes and even though we only see each other like once or twice a year we still try to make them. And I have to say platonic mixtapes are pretty great as well!
Playlist making is an art and my favorite vibes is depressed mood music and angsty love songs. Usually with cartoon characters that it’s themed around. I made a mental health recovery playlist last year that I’m pretty proud of that includes: Bear’s Den’s Above the Clouds of Pompeii, Rilo Kiley’s A Better Son/ Daughter, Florence and the Machines’ Shake it Out and Garbage’s We Never Tell (20 songs, approx 74 mins). ua-cam.com/play/PLD2WPPpVXX6FP18o8m0CYg0sZndavT2a4.html
This wasn't a mixtape but somewhat related? (I've never made a mixtape in my life but I will now). In high school, after my dad died, one of the things I took for myself out of his stuff was an external hard drive with all of his music. On this drive, there was a playlist of something like "the top 250 best songs ever". I really wanted to give these songs to my best friend but she wasn't allowed to have a computer. So I started burning them onto CDs and those were only big enough for about 15 at a time. I gave her a CD or two every couple of months and intentionally gave them numbers out of order and it was just really cute. Unfortunately, we stopped being friends because of a messy queer crush/figuring stuff out/bad teenage communication situation, so I ended up leaving the remaining ten or so CDs in her locker during break. I really hope she liked them.
months ago, i made a surprise playlist for my partner and sent it to them while they were sleeping. the theme was how i felt throughout realizing my feelings and falling for them. they still listen to it all the time so i’d say i did a pretty good job!

+Floxy that’s so cool! i never got into the aesthetic of the actual disc but i bet that makes them even better
ikr? each time she posts pics of them its like a little holiday. and i think it def makes them better
i be making playlists and then just not sending them cause i think they're sooo good but also believe people just won't appreciate them

+eustacia03 hahaha that’s perfect

That's fantastic.

:)))
listening to old high school mixtapes is one of my favorite things too.
I haven't made a mix cd in ages, I make mix Spotify playlists but it's just not the same as the physical thing with handmade cover art.
+TheRainydayvideo i miss handmade cd covers so much!

Yes! Mine lasted well into 2010/11 though 😃
Never made anyone a mixtape but this is a very good 101. 10/10 would recommend this vid, lol.

+Eliane Nieder hahaha. also any story that starts with “eating cheese in parks” is bound to be a good one.

+Doc Trower you have mixtapes as old as I am! incredible.

wowww making the titles in sequence mean something is next-level.
I have a am/fm radio and cassette player i got from 5 below it's great but i wanted to make a tape to play in it thank you for this help💜🤍💜🤍

great video!
that's so smart to just keep a running playlist for important people. I might just start doing that!

The day I discovered I could record my own voice was a good day from younger me but I fear the day I find that tape and actually listen to what I recorded :S
Yes! the worst was recording from the radio and then theyd cut it off early or the dj would start talking over the end.
Sadly, I am just young enough to have missed the era of mixtapes, but this sounds super cool! The closest I've come is making a Spotify playlist for every song I like that mentions space 🚀 (I didn't get very far, haha)
+Sam Ward Cares oooh that space playlist sounds awesome. gonna see how many space songs I have in my library now

My favorite playlist is one my friend made with all of the best killers songs! It's perfect.
+Katy Spencer my friends did this for me but with Tegan and Sara-great way to get a curated introduction to a band

I forgot about 8 tracks! I made a playlist there and linked it in a video probably 2 or 3 years ago but I love it for the same reasons you said.

that's so cool that you are still keeping up with the tradition!

I think the mixtape of 2k17 is a playlist in Spotify, which really does a disservice to the art because shuffle :/
+Chrysocolla Town ughhh yeah shuffling a mixtape is a crime. i think that’s what got me to pay for spotify premium-bypassing shuffle

that's really cool that in a way your Dad kinda left you a mixtape and then you passed that gift forward.
Hahaha you're right! I haven't looked at it like that before.
Awwww. My friend made me a mixcd recently!
you should make them one in return!
But there's so much music to choose from!!
+meredith monroe Hit me! I have so many playlists to make!
