  • What happens when the haircut tips and tricks don't work? Speed and simplicity are your friends. No fancy haircuts, just make them as comfortable as you can and get it done. Eventually things get better. Don't give up hope.

I'm a barber by trade and what I like to do with these little dudes and kids in general that don't like the sound or feeling is let them hold the clipper . I let them turn it on and off . I also get them to comb there hair first for me and play with the combs . This let's them know they are safe, they know it's not going to hurt them and just get comfortable with the environment. A good one is when I spray them down with my spray bottle I always say " dude I got a water gun with your name on it " Holding patience is key to every haircut... Including grown ups.

Same here. This looks like torture. My 4-1/2 yr old covers his ears anytime there’s loud noises. Letting him hold the clippers helped a lot also I include him in looking for the clippers sort of like an egg hunt. To top it off there’s an episode of one of his favorite shows (Daniel Tiger) getting a haircut and that’s what he watches and what we sing to while he’s getting a haircut. Getting haircuts are as fun as we make them.

as an autistic person, i remember when i was younger i hated haircuts and would have meltdowns, and one hairstylist was so mad about it that she slapped my writer and screamed at me. we were later given a full refund, but a lot of kids with autism don’t get treated with kindness at the hairstylist. god bless you guys for trying to understand them and treating them with kindness and care as you guys cut your child’s hair

As someone with autism I don't like to get haircuts because the clippers hurt so my mom when I was younger she got these clippers that didn't vibrate as hard anymore and and they weren't that sharp either my haircuts now aren't like normal edge up now but I really like the clippers

Same thing here, I’m 14 with Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD. When I was around 4, having my hair cut was like murder. The noise of the clippers really scared me, and the feeling of people grabbing my hair and cutting it would really make me feel queasy. I’ve also had to switch barbers like…4 or 5 times now (the first time was because the Barbershop I went to traumatised me when I walked passed it, and the others was because of style).
Also, love your profile picture, I’m a trainspotter as well (I recently went to go see the Tangmere at Crewe which is my local station for Trainspotting).

A good way to keep the kids calm is to put the largest guard on the clippers and let the kids feel the vibration s so that way they know that you mean no harm to them with the clippers. It brings comfort and security to the kids. You guys are doing a great job so far ☺

I find counting down in increments say from 20 to 0 giving them a 10 second break and then continuing helps, it means they can process that they will get a little break now and again, my son won’t sit though so have to chase him around the room, seems to be worse at the start. Good job with the cut, it was very quick

What helps us is giving him sensory calming before hand. Massage, joint compression, squeezes, then explaining what isgoing to happen. Then during I allow him to hold tablet. Giving sensory input first makes a huge difference. It helps desensitize him.

Thank you so much for sharing this video! My 4 (almost 5) year old son has autism and haircuts are always a nightmare for him! I bought the same clippers you used in this video and gave him his first at home haircut today! I’m glad the guards are color coded because it made it so much easier to follow along with how you did it! His hair looks great! It was a lot less stressful for him (and me lol) and it actually looks better than when the barber does it because he wasn’t fighting as bad! Plus the clippers cost as much as what I would pay for 1 haircut, so you can’t beat that!

My 5 year old is on the spectrum. He loves playing in bath tub. But when he sees his father bring in the clippers before going into bath tub he just can't stop shouting, moving, shaking and i could literally see the veins in his neck because of all that muscle tightening and anxiety and the force with which he screams. So i have to hold his arms and hold his legs in my legs to calm him down and make him stand still just to get that trim....n i can bet he gets the strength of an adult when stressed out so much so that even i can't hold him...

I got used to it but i used to scream so much and say that they were trying to kill me in order to get someone to come and save me from the haircut. Every hairdresser on the neighborhood knew me so they refused to give me a haircut. It eventually gets better, but i remember that the worse was to get hair on my face and the machine jerking the hair instead of cutting it. Unfortunately, i can't give you any better advice

We were very fortunate to find a hair cuttery that had the patience and dexterity ( and fun chairs and cartoons on a tv) to handle Dan and distract him. The first couple occasions were shakey , up and down in the chair and quite a bit of shrieks at age 4-5. He has completely overcome that now at 10 and 11--but he also got into a tricotmilia phase (spelling incorrect, aka "hair pulling")...that changed things to a buzz cut. But he is getting better.

I have the hair pulling disorder and I’m dreading the day of the hair cut. The simple fact of the threats of the shaved. The buzzer and I’m going to have a heart attack. Trying to decide on the hair cut it would be evened out but that would also mean the look of what it did when i stop pulling. Bottom line is I don’t want the failure of it not worthwhile.

The barber would let us bring him after he had closed, and several of us had to hold him down, despite him being so young. Luckily, he got over it and now loves to go get his hair cut. Hello Autism Family. Although my son is not autistic, he has a shows similar issues like your son with haircuts. He never liked it but we use to get through haircuts. Within the last year... it’s been terrible. We’ve left with half done haircuts because I can’t hold him down. Ive cried home because I can’t get his haircuts finished. I was searching online for new tricks when the lollipops, tablets, toys, tv all have failed and I ran into your video. It gave me hope and encouragement that I could do his hair. And it didn’t need to be picture perfect, just enough to clean him up and make him presentable. And it worked! Thank you for posting this video for all parents who need the help. And who need to know they are not alone. God bless.

I know how they feel. I hate getting my hair cut at the salon. They always wash it, which I hate because they pull my hair and it tickles my head and neck. I also HATE when hair gets on me or especially inside my clothes. That's why I just let my hair grow long and trim split ends off myself.

You know i can clearly relate to this video because i use to have a lot of the same problems when i was a kid too. I never liked to get my hair cut done either i never liked the buzzer because it was so loud and it was constantly in my ears making my ears ring. I have high respect and love for kids with autism and the mothers and fathers that have to constantly help them. I never judge people and man I'm not even going to lie that does really look hard and stressful but hang in there man it will all pay off soon. An when i found out that i had autism i have been supporting kids and adults that have autism ever since. But i am just happy that mine isn't as server. Autism is one of those many things that are really hard to try to cope with and all. Hang in there

Thank you for this. I know this is older. But this is helpful for my 2 year old. ... Gonna have to learn to be his personal hair cutter lol because his first hair cut this summer was at our local Walmart and the entire store heard him screaming and crying :( I had to wear a mask...and I was sweating so bad from holding him down it was horrible.

When my son was younger, my husband had to hold him and I would use the clippers. He would cry hysterically and acted like it was torture. Between the ages of 5-9 we let him use his tablet and made it fun by putting baby powder all over his back and neck. It takes the itchiness away and he thought it was funny that there is baby powder everywhere. He is now 10 and is completely fine without baby powder and I became a pro at cutting hair lol

@@tiaryan1350 Oh don't worry, he will! My husband and I would be sweating and get into an argument almost every time lol. We used to have to cut his nails when he was asleep, but now it's like nothing. Very stressful, but it will get better. My only advise is pray over him in the name of Jesus! My son was diagnosed with 4 different things but has improved tremendously. Things use to feel hopeless and stressful but with a lot of prayer and faith in God we got through it. My son is in a regular class and is doing just fine. We just don't speak Autism into his life. He still has to work on some things, but what kid doesn't? Your baby will succeed. Just give him some time.

    • @stephcourtnage5546

U cant explain that to a kid with autism.
My son logically knows it doesnt hurt and if he sits still it's over sooner but that doesn't affect the way he has his haircut. He screams, cries, sweats, squeals with fear and pain and we have to attempt to pin him, he panics about being near his ears before he is even in the chair, he cant handle the water sprayed on his head, he cant deal with hair dryers.. he regularly has messy and/or uneven cuts where we have to abandon the job because of the trauma.
Hes happy when its finished and gets candy - frustratingly it's like there was never an issue

My son/nephew (long story) hates the scissors but is exactly like him when my boyfriend goes go cut his hair. We’ve gotten used to me and 2 of my friends holding him down while Jared (my bf) cuts his hair. But he’ll scream and cry the whole time. After ward we put him in the shower and he hates the water so that’s hell too it only stops when we give him a popsicle at the end but giving him that much sugar doesn’t help. He’s 5 years old and the kids strong ash when my brother adopted him he was 1 and by age 3 was diagnosed with autism and is blind for the most part.

So I always used to be like this when I was a toddler, so the cool thing was is that the hair cuttery that I went to had a TV and a DVD player In it and also a gaming system like a Wii. The one at JCPenny wasn’t that good because I didn’t like the feeling of the hair and also I wasn’t happy about it so we ended up going to the same person that cuts my hair now but the one now is even nicer. I would recommend everyone to go one that is similar to that.

I remember that haircuts used to hurt like hell until I was like 5 or 6. The end of the guard hurt, which I found out 30 years later is due to a slight allergy to stainless steel. Also, 55 years ago, clippers usually weren’t kept as sharp as they are today, so the clippers were pulling my hair many times/second, which really hurt. The hair getting into my mouth was also a problem, but I didn’t have stim, I just cried. I wish doctors knew how to diagnose this 55 years ago, as it might have made things better.

I found a hair clipper brand called Surker K9S on Amazon. It's has a really quiet motor compared to most clippers. The vibration is low as well. It worked out well for my son. I know everyone is different. With said clippers being cordless. It also reduces risk of damage to a cord Incase of a fit. Definitely get a barber brush with talc powder to remove the hair from the face, neck, and ears. Using a cape was hard at first. But I let my son play with the one I bought so he could be used to it.

Hello, I am Sienna. I am totally blind, and I have autism. I was born totally blind. I wasn't diagnosed with autism until I was 10 or 11. I have Asperger's Syndrome. I get overwhelmed really easily, I don't deal with disappoinment that well, and I don't handle stores or haircuts that well either. When I go to the store, I carry stress balls, and other fidgets with me. And I also don't really care for the doctor's office or the dentist's office. I always carry fidgets with me there, and I use my phone. I would name all my favorite fidgets, but that might take a long time. One of my favorites is a squeaky ball. I like to feel the air, and I like it when someone rolls it on me, because it's spiky. And I also have these sensory brushes. They're soft and double-sided. I bet your kids might like them. I like the fidgets that hold up for a long time. If you could recommend me some, I would gladly look them up.

If the hair clippings on his face are what is bothering him, would it work better to have him lay/lean back while you clip his hair (at least the top)? That way the clippings will fall to the floor (or whatever you want to catch them in) instead of the child's face.
There's also those cloak things the barbers use to keep the hair clippings off the body.
