This actually makes me respect Somecallmejhonny more since while he does have issues with some 3d sonic games he does not bash on people who like them and will point out the positives/stuff he likes on the games (hell when he re-review black knight he was more positive on it than he was in his first review).
Yeah, Johnny has commented saying his earlier reviews were meant to kinda emulate the AVGN style with his brother, but now that more years have come by and times changed, he found his own groove.
He's stated numerous times he hates the game for the controls and such, but he does at least give it a fair shake in his reviews and explains why he feels the way he does. I don't care if a reviewer disagrees with me, but it's essential they back up their claims with logic and explain it to the audience.
Been a fan of Johnny for years. My fav youtuber.
Johnny has among the better SA2 reviews as he's not biased against nor in favour of it(his personal preference does show and his issues with the story are either mistranslations or him not getting it). People say his review ruined the game's reputation, but all I see is folks taking off the nostalgia goggles and seeing the flaws.
Honestly speaking, a bunch of games from the Dreamcast, 64, PS1 era didn't age well. Sonic just gets the raw end of the deal because of critics like Egoraptor

I buried my own instance of that around three episodes into my own review show. Mostly.
With the much deserved exceptions of MLP Newborn Cuties, See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey (a classic Powerpuff Girls episode that I didn't realize when I made the review was _after_ Craig left the show and the seasonal rot started) and Alpha's Magical Christmas (MMPR holiday special) (not counting the joke when I used Where the Dead Go to Die as an example of why I wouldn't go below 1 on my rating system because I'd have to watch it to actually rate it and that will _never_ happen) I haven't gone below a rating 3/5 ever since my first review. In fact the rating I've given the most is six 4/5s, followed by five 3/5s, four 5/5s, three 2/5s, two 4 point 5/5s and one each of 1/5 (Newborn Cuties) and 3 point 5/5.
My first was a review of the Power Rangers Turbo Pizza episode after Linkara glossed over it. I made *_so many_* mistakes on that I eventually made up for when I reviewed the Carranger counterpart of it, though I had some audio issues that I covered for with UA-cam's captions. Honestly, Database Ranger did a FAR better job of reviewing it than I did and his show is really good, if you like Power Rangers, I highly recommend it.

The only person that I think does the “angry persona” character right is AVGN. And even then, he does it in a way that makes it endearing to the character. He also avoids reviewing games with polarizing reputations and more focused on things that are unanimously seen as bad. It’s a really smart move on his end.

It’s funny how you title this video “Why Sonic sucks” and then you’re actually really fair and reasonable to the series.

Arin in general has gone downhill. He's become the saltiest UA-camr I know, especially on Twitter. I'm glad Jontron's doing his own thing. He seems way happier.

@@Pooky1991 Even then he got right back up and he has been doing fine ever since. I believe that every person can change until it's proven otherwise, I mean I think that's what we should be doing instead of latching onto this one narrative on Jon for so long and telling people he will never change.
Only real issue I've ever had against Sonic was that it seems nobody really remembers what people actually liked him for, and everyone has a different opinion on what that is.
Think about that, it explains why a lot of the games are shit on- especially as of late.

The best way I can sum up the underlying identity Sonic has is that his games are all about flow and style(it isn't about going fast, it's about not stopping and you have to look cool while you play).

I've had people starting arguments over nitpicking the movie to hell and back. That's not having "More then one opinion" You have people who go with the Archie Sonic, people who go with the Sonic Team sonic, people who go with the Sonic Boom sonic, etc etc etc, and they all say that the other viewpoints are what is "bringing sonic down" You have the people who think Sonic was only good in 2D, the people who think Sonic is only good in 3D, and everyone has a different character that hasn't been featured in a game in 10 years that they claim is the reason for Sonic sucking now.
And it's ALWAYS "MY opinion is the only opinion that matters"

it's really annoying to see people bashing on sonic, saying the games and the fandom suck. haters/critics have to say that sonic had a rough history ever since he went 3D, say that sonic sucks now, bring up sonic 06, complain about sonic's friends, the fandom and mocking the fans. like jesus christ i get it. and also, it's so annoying to see let's players mess up on purpose and complain about it, like what did you expect?!

I feel just how arin react from sonic, I noticed his reaction between this clip and and his recent danganronpa vids, his reaction from playing the class trial he has a hard time because he doesn't bother checking the controls and (spoiler alert)
never listen the characters talking about the case, they thought it was clearly byakuya who killed sakura, just because of his reaction
This is kinda why i stopped watching Game Grumps altogether. Arin to me just doesn't feel like he cares about what he plays anymore. He just treats it as that one job he doesn't want to go to but has to because it pays him well.

Normally I blame Sega USA and Sega Japan for always fighting with each other and making super bizarre and dumb decisions also I think Sega is confused and don't know where to take the Sonic franchise/series anymore but I can't wait to see the doomsday when the new voice for Sonic is announced anyway back to playing Citizens Unite Earth x Space have a nice day or night everyone.
It's weird cause usually i hear the opposite and hear people blame the fanbase instead for not deciding what they want in a Sonic game.

We have to ask why the _Mario_ franchise and fanbase remain relatively high quality and united respectively while the _Sonic_ franchise and fanbase remain in disputed quality and very divided respectively?
@@e1iteyoshi998 It's obvious It's mostly Sega of Japan's fault since they are the reason they ended up becoming 3rd party to begin with. Also its clear they have meddle with development of Sonic games in the past especially forcing Sonic Boom to be a Wii U game instead of being on the PS4 and Xbox One all because of some dumb 3 games on the Wii U exclusivity deal they made with Nintendo.

Yeah even as a huge fan of Sonic myself i can say that I haven't been into the series as much as i once was. My last game i played was Sonic Mania and that was the last game i considered good from this franchise. Forces wasn't as bad as some of the community made it out to be, but it suffered majorly in the writing department. Characters who were as seen powerful beings like Infinite were reduced to memeworthy edgelords and Tails was reduced to be cowardly despite learning how to be brave without Sonic before.
I think that Sega's restructuring of their team is a step in the right direction to hopefully get Sonic back on track to being good, but i feel like letting go of a majority of the main cast at the moment (well with the exception of some) is a little too extreme. I didn't want to see Cindy Robinson or even Roger Craig Smith go. I know that they haven't been received well by some fans but overall i do think that they did very well with what they were given.

Loved the vid Manga. As someone who likes these so called "bad games of the franchise" (06, Black Knight, 3D Blast, etc.), I really appreciate you pointing Arin out on the shit he's done, as well as the other big channels that put the series into such a negative light.

I feel like I should mention I actually LIKE Shadow the Hedgehog & Forces. Are they bad? Yeah but I can find enjoyment in them.
I actually think Shadow is decently good. It has a lot of good qualities to it, just that it also has some pretty bad parts mixed in. Forces meanwhile is a diffrent story.
@@lpfan4491 I honestly don't think people should shit on Shadow the Hedgehog too much, it was a necessary game to re-establish Shadow's part in the timeline now that he was brought back after going missing in SA2 and showing up in Heroes without his memory. It ties everything back in nicely AND we got an extra game out of it.

@@merasmurry1460 I'm a guy who loves 06. Why? Because it's fun. I love the story, the music, the stages, it's always been one of my favorites. According to Arin however, these aren't fair defenses and I'm just an idiot who likes a bad game. It's funny how opinions work nowadays.
You know, it's really funny. When I saw you upload this video, Kamen, I thought to myself, "oh great, not him too." I thought you were going to do the popular thing to do, that being, to rant on about Sonic's "rocky transition into 3D", "too many characters", "REMEMBER SONIC AND ELISE KISSING??", and all that repetitive bullshit because it's Sonic's 30th anniversary and it'd give clout.
Thankfully I was wrong.
As someone who grew up with and still likes a lot of Sonic games from the mid-2000s (his supposed "dark age") I honestly think his true "dark age" arose with Lost World, when the games not only dropped in quality, but also scope, ambition, and heart. It's an era of Sonic entirely defined by self-deprecating humor, working alongside those who slandered the series where it's misplaced, and just putting out either garbage or mediocrity with no true identity or passion.
If leaks are true and the series is taking the direction it was going with the Adventure games once again, then I'm sure Sonic is leaving this slump of a decade, which, I'm being real with you, I've been waiting for since Sonic Colors killed the series self-respect.
Edit: and what I mean by Colors killing the series' self-respect, I mean them up at Sega doing dumb shit like hiring people like Ken Pontac and Warren Graff as scenario writers despite them not knowing literally anything about Sonic as they wrote the script.
Even if the leaks weren't true it's clear that Sonic is getting an overhaul with voice actors being replaced and the new show that (from what I've heard) will have a tone similar to some of Man of Action's popular series like the original Ben 10.
I hate the bullshit too. I actually found a video recently that was the same tired old points that Colors is what Sonic is and all that nonsense. Worst part is that it wasn't even a pretender or nonfan, they really seemed to like the series in concept but just hated the serious stuff the series was literally built around. It just tells me that people don't get Sonic anymore...or they just never got it.
I almost feel like the weird freak accident of a fan that got into the series with lost world and went back to the dreamcast and dark age-eras when he liked the serious and dark aspect of that game. And it was luck too, I just selected multiple games from the club nintendo-wiiu mariokart promotion back then because I could not decide what to pick. And the Internetconnection gave me the lost world-code.
@@lpfan4491 Man, your first Sonic game was Lost World? I find it a miracle that you even gained any interest in the series and went on to play his actually, non-ass games.
Also yeah, people still touting Colors as the direction the series is about don't understand what it was ever about and what this series needs momentarily. Just like how they cried about Sonic being too serious, it's about time we got back Sonic taking itself seriously and about time Sega ignored the outcry from people who never had any real interest in the series to begin with.
@@mangleman25 I mean, I was a kid and pretty easy to convince as long as the general idea of a game vibed well with me. Though I still overall find Lost world to be the least bad of the trio of it, colors and forces.
Ironic twist tho, I also liked the story of black knight as a kid(Never owned or played the game, just watched it), but now I kinda hate it.

As a huge Sonic fan... God bless you for this video. I won’t deny that plenty of the games have flaws, but to say that they are all bad is just silly. And plenty of the flaws are way too focused on. Like the camera in Adventure ain’t the best, but it’s not like Mario 64’s camera is that much better.
Also I hate when Sega sucks up to people who hate on their games and pander to them. I’ll never forget when they invited Egoraptor to visit their headquarters in Japan or something like that, and that felt like they were spitting on the actual fans who love and support the series. Sonic fans are enough of a punching bag as it is, so Sega saying basically implying that they care more about haters than they do fans only hurts more.
As why us fans are aggressive.

This video was awesome! As a Sonic fan that grew up with the games as a kid I whole hardly agree.
I blame Screw Attack mostly for the hate Sonic got because they almost everytime shit talked him like he was the worst thing (with one of the only time being Death Battle before Rooster Teeth bought the rights). I honestly didn't know Arin bashed Sonic that hard and makes me sad. (Makes me glad Jontron got out of there while he did).
I remember one time there was a youtube game reviewer named Jimmy and he bashed Sonic Adventure 1 and he did in an Assholish way as he was harsh than normal (much on the same level of Projared if not harsher) and when people called himself, he deflected say the fan can't take criticism or some other smug remark (it's been a while so I can't remember). I unsub from him after words because he just became an asshole...
Anyway great video and I really hope Sonic new game is good. I loved Mania but really hope the 3D title can pull it through for the little blue blurr. Hyped for the 2nd movie! 😎
Yeah, and one thing people bring up is this one clip during him and Jon's playthrough of Sonic 06. With Arin trying to argue the Adventure games were bad, where as Jon says they aren't. Honestly him pulling this stuff with those two games is if he was trying to spite Jon. Which him making that bad criticism video that he calls sequelitis, based on Ocarina of Time, just as Jon talked against him making it the way he did, also proves how dumb and spiteful Arin is being.
At least Jimmy’s getting less and less traction. Hopefully the same happens with Screwattack/Rooster Teeth and Game Grumps someday.
Being fair on Sonic Forces, the team that made it was apparently pretty new so it lead to the level design being a lot more basic and bland, plus other issues.
Still not that good (and doesn't explain much on the writing missteps) but all things considered, it could DEFINITELY be worse.
Too bad the script is goddamn inexcusable.

Second thing I will say; it seems like a lot of the critics in the 2010s were Gen x Nintendo fans who probably grew up with some resentment towards Sega in general and/or Sonic specifically.

I’ve only seen a few of your videos and only recently discovered your channel at all, but I like what I’ve seen so far. In the few videos I’ve seen you’ve made me feel better about liking things when the entire internet is telling me it’s bad and I’m bad for liking it. This isn’t specifically about sonic mind you but this video definitely helps give those vibes. Looking forward to seeing what you’ll do in the future!

10:00 Ineptitude is one thing, but a lot of Arin's problems with games are self-inflicted, but he still acts like he does nothing wrong. It's the same thing with Zelda. He'll say that his refusal to use a shield is his "unique experience" and then turn around and lecture the audience when it doesn't work out for him, taking it personally that they don't think the games are terrible.
At this point I just assume he's trolling... especially since he outright admitted in the Sonic Generations play-through that he blames the games to get a rise out of people.

in the last few years I've stumbled across many videos that address the sonic franchise, but this one right here is the best one so far. Most of the videos I saw were usually just dissing the franchise and it's fans, and as for the ones that actually gave kind of a fair criticism they all glanced over the self proclaimed ''game critics'' because to put it simply their fan bases are too strong and that would get these people into trouble. To be honest I am a follower of channels such as the game grumps and PPG, while they offer me a great deal of entertainment I don't agree with their takes on a handful of games (or in Sonic's case franchises) and especially Arin Hanson considering how he literally makes mistakes sometimes that are on purpose to create this image of the game to make it seem bad so that the impressionable audience thinks the same about that game. I like how in one of the episodes of game grumps (probably from the mania play through which by the way they did not complete because the game was actually good and not frustrating Arin and Dan said something along the lines of:
''sonic generations is that game most people liked, should we play it ?''
''nah, because it will be boring''
And Arin said this or something close to it because he knew that the game is actually good and he even admitted having played it and enjoyed it , plus the time when they literally said that they picked the Wii version of sonic unleashed because it was and I quote ''the shittier version'', which solidifies the fact that they intentionally poke holes in the franchise to make sonic look like a joke, and I hate the fact that Sega themselves are making fun of their own franchise just to appeal to these type of people. And being that I am a sonic fan I am not afraid to address the problems that these games have but I hate it when people make trashy opinions on sonic just for those views and likes.

Yeah, I agree with the video. Also not liking the 3D games is fine, but saying "no game in the whole franchise was ever good" is being a hipster. Franchises aren't usually born out of sequential bad games, and those people should know that at the very least.
As a huge Sonic fan, it’s a shame that there’s such a negative stigma surrounding then games nowadays. I won’t pretend that the 3D/modern games are perfect, since as much nostalgia as I have for Sonic Heroes due to it being the first Sonic game I owned along with Sonic Riders, I won’t ignore the flaws it has that keep it from being a great game. Nonetheless, my personal favorite Sonic game is Sonic Colors, because for me, (almost) everything that game set out to do, it did consistently well, to the point where I enjoyed it all the way through and still do to this day. But as you said, people (both fans and critics alike) like to hyperfixate on the games’s flaws and ignore their good qualities almost entirely, to the point where it almost feels as if they don’t exist.
As for Arin from GG...I don’t think he’s a bad person either, but he has such an ADD mindset where he just rushes through a game without bothering to understand its mechanics even if they’re outright spelled out for him. This isn’t bad on its own, but it causes frustrations and with the inability to realize he’s bad or at least subpar at the game, he’ll call the game itself bad and further drag its reputation through the mud. You could argue that he’s just doing it for the sake of comedy, but when you intentionally misrepresent a game, you’ll spread the stigma that it’s bad upon (many) impressionable fans who are most likely kids or teenagers who’ll take his word as gospel, like with Dunkey. The worst part is that a lot of the people who criticize Arin/GG are just seen as “butthurt fanboys,” even if many people are aware that there’s criticisms that can be made about the Sonic games. Just that Arin and plenty other videogame “critics” go about it in the worst way possible.
So tl;dr, while I hope the next Sonic game is one worth writing home about, I just hope this annoying stigma that’s permeated the series since the mid-2010s soon dies down.

I want to bring this up because I see this a lot, but just so you know I was born in 2005 and never played played sonic adventure for myself so take this with a grain of salt. “Sonic had a rough transition to 3D.” No? No they didn’t. A simple google search will tell you that their first 3D game was sonic adventure for the Dreamcast, which was considered a good game when it first released. “But it’s graphics are bad!” Yes, to our current day standards, it may seem bad. But this game came out back in 1998 and was their first 3D game. It was never going to look good by our current day standards. If a kid saw that game back when it came out, they would have been amazed at seeing sonic in 3D. We can’t look at older games with the same standards we have now or even back in 2011. As those games will rarely appease to such.

I've been disappointed for a decade and a half because Sega refuses to make good Sonic games. They listen to these fucking morons who say "Sonic was never good" and keep making trash that isn't Sonic at all. Sonic Colors was the game that truly ruined the legacy of Sonic though, and Lost World was such a disgrace, but I wasn't even surprised at that point. I had seen just how little Sega actually cared about the blue blur. The series is just dogshit now, and you have idiots like Arin who still perpetuate this dumb idea about Sonic always sucking to this day.

sonic does not deserve this much hate. it may had it's good moments and it's bad moments but I don't think all sonic games are that bad. I think the problem of this is they overcriticized it to the point they believe it's what it's become and didn't take a step back and really look at the game in general "were there at least good points from the 'so called bad games'?"
- sonic adventure and sequel were great because of it's soundtrack, good gameplay and the story with it's interesting characters altogether.( the chao garden too)
- sonic 06 had at least the awesome soundtrack, shadow's storyline is amazing and have the best character development, sliver was interesting, and the villain metaphasis was a great threat and very scary enough to make the hero's shake. it may have bad mechanic's but there were some good moments.
- sonic generations was a love letter to the sonic fans.

I think somecallmejohnny is probably my favorite game reviewer since he gives the games he plays a fair chance and goes pretty in depth with stuff like story and gameplay without getting overly nitpicky most of the time.
To be fair, sonic adventure games doesn't really incentivize explore the individual levels, of course knuckles stages you do cause the levels are built around exploring. At least in sonic level, you just hold up and run till you cross the finish line.

I do think Sonic always sucked aside from the Adventure games. I don't get why people even like the 2D games. How are you supposed to go fast when you cannot see 5 feet in front of you? It's dumb design. Most of the levels also make you wait for platforms to move or make you go slowly in water. There is no speed even if it's marketed as a fast game. Also, Sonic 1 has a glitch on the TITLE SCREEN. What foreshadowing. But yeah, Arin's definitely not a good source to base anything on, anyone with more than a double digit IQ could see that.
Cause Sonic is about momentum. Not speed, and don't expect to learn the level right away or anything. As for Arin, he is kinda a representation of how to not play a game.

The rivalry stopped when SA2 was ported to gamecube. The entire point of it to begin with was to sell more Sega-consoles. I still feel as if Lost world could have restarted it, but the game messed it up and the concept is dead. And we should let it stay dead.
The section with the light dash shoes was kinda weird. Didn't see the point why you needed to go up the zipline just to get the shoes, could of just been right there by the rings. Either way, it was kind of silly why they didn't explore around the area when they realized they couldn't do the light dash.
While that doesn't exclude the fact that these people aren't exactly in the right for hating cause of things like that. It is most certainly inconvenient at times.
I think this just goes to show that you should only listen to criticism from people who are actually fans of any property. At least they're being genuine and aren't just saying that a game is bad due to a preconceived bias.

From the mainline games i only played the First Sonic Advance games on an emulator, the first Sonic on an old Genesis and Sonic Unleashed, Sonic and the Black Knight and Sonic Generations. And the only game from the mainline i finished was Unleashed, cause with the others i lost the motivation half-way. Other than that, i finished Sonic Battle, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood and Shadow the Hedgehog.
My opinion is, that Sonics greatest strengths lies in the character cast and writing, a strength that is rarely used due to the writers not interested in it.
But in terms of Gameplay, Sonic has in my opinion one of the most redundant and restrictive gameplay i ever seen.
Redundant= I know two myths pertaining to the creation of the gameplay flow in Sonic. The first one is that it was inspired by the movement of Pinballs and the other one is that the creator looked at people speedrunning the first levels of Mario Bros. and wanted to put the emphasis on that.
Both have their issues.
The main appeal of Pinball machines is to keep an uncontrolable ball going without losing it. I would like to know, who ever thought "I want to be the ball in a pinball machine."
And the speedruns on the first Mario Bros levels were not something people liked to do, but have to do, since Mario Bros couldn`t save progress. I mean it is commendable to try to turn misery into a virtue, but both factors result in most games feeling like i am getting tossed around the stage with no control over it, something very detrimental to a platformer.
Restrictive = Sonics basic trait is being able to run fast. This restrict the gameplay at so many levels.
First Sonics abilities: While Mario got a new jump almost every game, Sonics abilities remained pretty stagnant, being the Spin Dash in Sonic 2, Homing Attack, Sidestep and Light Dash from Adventure and the Boost and Slide from Unleashed. The problem is, making new abilities around running is pretty much impossible except from running even faster.
The stages: Well remember how after Green Hill Zone you got into Marble Zone? It is pretty much the main problem with Sonic Stage design. You completely have to build it around Sonics ability to run fast, because precision platforming and being fast contradicts each other on an fundamental level. The same goes about collectibles, which were completely random placed in early titles until the 3D titles placed them directly in Sonics way and tried to use them to guide to alternate paths to go. I also remember how Sonic and the Black Knight had side objectives and NPCs to talk to on the stages, which are very easy to miss, due to being so fast. Basically if you want to design a functional Sonic map, you have to design a A to B racetrack with splitting paths, which also runs the danger of being repetitive. (This is the main reason Sonic games bore me to death, because the gameplay gets really repetitive, if you aren`t into speedruns. I may be one of the few, who actually liked the Werehog in Unleashed as bringing an alternative gameplay style to cycle through.)
In my opinion a good Sonic game should take some pages from Adventure and utilize the cast to give every character a gamemode on its own, Sonic the classical A to B-running, Knuckles a 3-d map to explore, etc. etc.
Building on its strengths and bringing some variety in the gameplay. But sadly it won`t happen...
I agree for the most part. The boost gameplay has gotten very stale to me, it essentially is just holding a button to see a cutscene of the stage you could've been actually playing. They've focused too much on the speed and not enough on what made the speed fun in my opinion, momentum. What's fun about going fast in the 2d sonic games is that you have to find ways to build it up in most cases, which makes the speed feel like a reward rather than base gamplay, which is why the boost is kinda lame to me. There's also the issue of having to design levels to be way longer because of boosting. Though they don't actually take more time, in fact they usually end up taking way less time, which is why forces is so short. And all of that effort for scenery you can barely see thanks to going at mach speed. And the characters... There are so many of them, and yet they are almost never used at all, and when they are used they're cardboard cutouts of what they used to be. Tails is now a coward who can't do anything without Sonic, even though in past games we've been shown this clearly isn't the case.

Those playthroughs killed me. When I was little and played Sonic Adventure 2, I knew where to look for the speed shoes... on my first playthrough. Yeah, some of the Sonic fan base doesn't like Arin. The fact that SEGA had him to promote a Sonic game... yeah... SomeCallMeJohnny is like the best for Sonic games at critics, but even then, some Sonic fans don't like him, so take things at a grain of salt. I think also the Completionist is good too. However just asking a Sonic fan and playing a Sonic game is the best way. I suggest Sonic Adventure 2 just for the Chao Garden, and Sonic Force for character ideas.

It's genuinely so good to see people call out Arin on his bullshit. I really wish more people would. For a channel of their size, they have a surprising amount of influence, and he and people around him, and his company, has caused so much shit. Like it's stuff not as bad as, say Cosmodore or MiniLadd or Anton, but there has been some bad shit, however the sheer *amount* of what they have done basically completely under the radar, it deserves to be talked about.
Even if this is just about Sonic, it's still something, at the very least. I just wish more people would publicly call out Arin and bring into question stuff he's done, Game Grumps has done, and actually put a spotlight on it. Stuff like DD, like his sheer hypocrisy, that Summer "garage sale" that was shut down, like his exploitation of artists, or his current editor, Ben, who's still employed by him after the stunts he's done.

If you’re talking about sonic adventure dx then I know what you’re talking about. But at the same time I also got the glitch as a kid a never knew why. I thought that the game somehow had a game breaking bug. But that didn’t stop my enjoyment sonic adventure even if it’s not the “right” version to play

@@ChiefMedicPururu well you see I played the GameCube version this was before I had a pc to play the game with mods. So I’m kinda talking on the hardware it was released in.
