Hi Hobbiton Piper! Greetings from Germany!
What a marvellous review of a truly magnificent tobacco. I enjoyed the atmosphere you created on the veranda of your home in Missouri - so relaxed and in tune with moments of tasting and enjoyment. Very well done!
When I smoked Capstan Gold for the first time, I did not expect too much, and in fact, there is not anything like an overwhelming complexitiy. The pure quality of the Virginias, though, makes up for this and for some smokers, like me, there is nothing better than a natural, straight Virginia which pleases my palate so that I can play around with the intensity of smoking and retro-haling. Saying this, I must honestly confess that I value this Capstan flake a lot more than the much costlier, but by no means superior Three Nuns Yellow. My method of filling the bowl is rather the traditional folding technique (fold the flake twice so that you end up with four strands that can be twisted and slightly stuffed into the bowl) as I found out that it burns cooler this way and provides a longer, dryer smoke.
Capstan being the oldest pipe tobacco still manufactured today is a revelation and a must-try for every Virginia lover.

This is a wonderful comment! Yes, I enjoy many different packing techniques. I’ve found the method shown in the video is good for beginners as it is easier to pack and keep lit without too much issue. Capstan Gold is a real joy. I smoked some just yesterday morning and enjoyed every puff for an hour. :) I hope you will enjoy all of my reviews in the Pipe Tobacco Reviews Playlist!

I brought out some Capstan Blue the other day for my father to try. He did 20 years in the navy and retired as a Chief. As we spent an hour or so in the garage smoking, he told me a couple sea stories. One of which was how he and his guys would (in their leisure time) stand around the Capstans and smoke cigars, cigarettes and pipes and just chat. He said he got a lot of wisdom from the old timers in his early years doing that. He also explained how they would put a coat of Vaseline in the brass tops of the capstans before they covered them up to keep the brass from dulling so they would be easier to clean when they got into port.

Capstan Gold reminds me of a time I was walking through the woods, in Ava, Missouri, and I came upon a felled tree which had begun to decompose. It had been raining so there was a slightly sweet, earthly scent in this place that was so natural and pleasant. Persimmons also come to mind, and yes, also citrus.

Hello from Spain. A sweet and tasty Virginia flake. Soft edges and with the characteristic sweetness of Mac Baren. It is not as strong as the Capstan blue label. I can smoke this every day. It is also among my favorites. Also, here in Spain it's very easy to find and very cheap, 7 euros (8 dollars). Similar to Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake, but less complex, another one of my favorites. But Capstan is ready to smoke, not so wet. Great review!. Cheers.

After years of aromatic ribbon cut blends, I finally decided to try flake cut. I got Capstan Gold for my first flake. There were two other flakes available at the store I went to, but I'm obsessed with old sailor life (from the 1600s to the 1800s)
so I was drawn by the nautical theme. As soon as I tried it, I was in love. It's a wonderful smoke and the flavors are well blended. I may never go to loose cut again.

Will need to try the gold. So far I have only smoked the blue-very very good ($60/tin in Canada unfortunately). Tonight I am way on the other side of the scale and smoking Peterson Irish flake while sipping a Guinness ;)

What a marvellous review! Thanks a lot. I only recently started pipe-smoking again after many, many years of abstinence. Maybe it's partially due to the pandemic, but I feel that a little indulgence cannot be wrong.
I have a weakness for ancient British tobacco brands such as Three Nuns, St. Bruno, and, of course, Capstan. This tobacco is the mildest of these three, yet full of the richest Virginia aroma. An excellent blend, and each of your observations is so true.
The smell took me back on my first journey to England that I made as a student, never forgetting that wonderful smell of Earl Grey tea and fresh toast spread with orange marmalade which pervaded the bed & breakfast hotel I stayed at in the mornings.
Greetings from Germany, keep on with these detailed and inspiring reviews!

A great review of a blend you obviously really enjoy. Interesting to hear you explain how you have learned how to eke out the subtle nuances in the blend that I am sure newcomers to pipe smoking especially will really appreciate. You explained the blend very well and covered all the bases, that for me is a home run at the bottom of the 9th 👍✌️

Nice video and review. I'm coming up on 4 years smoking a pipe, and can only recently retrohale. I still don't know that I can get many more flavor notes from it but I'll keep working. I also enjoy whisky tasting so that is a cool comparison

Why on earth do people recommend aromatics to beginners! Capstan Gold is a perfect introduction not only to flakes, but to the pipe in general. Never had a bad smoke from it in 40 years, and I still use it regularly for its calm and well-behaved manner. Unfortunately, here in Australia, that little yellow tin he's holding up costs$130 plus!

    • @hobbitonpiper
      @hobbitonpiper  Рік тому

I think the reason so many introduce pipers to an aromatic first is because many new pipers have trouble pulling flavors from tobacco, so they throw a strong aromatic topping at them, and then after that they will often move to the bold flavors of english blends. But as soon as you can move a person to a sweet virginia like this one and they “get it”, they may be hooked for life. :)
