This was a very powerful scene. Cheadle should have gotten the Oscar for this performance. Breathtaking and inspirational.
I thought cheadle did get a Oscar
Had the bad luck to be the same year as Jamie Fox in Ray.
@@katierowen3166 Ironically enough, I don't remember "Ray" at all, and Jamie Fox just registers. But I do most certainly remember "Hotel Rwanda" from that year.
This scene was very epic and powerful
Bad african accent
“You will tell them that I DID NOTHING!” the general shouted in anger and desperation.
Watching someone who considers themselves powerful being reduced to utter powerlessness is perhaps one of the most gratifying things to witness.
Tbh I get an unhealthy amount of satisfaction from powerful people getting their privilege checked.
@@newnoise95 Yeah? Also that is the general getting his privilege checked. He's been shown that there would be legitimate consequences for his actions and he freaked out as a result because due to his high status, he is not used to them.
Especially when they act high and mighty with their power while lives are being lost/in danger. I am like, they got some nerve...
In real life, General Bizimungu ended up fleeing Rwanda shortly after these events when his side lost the civil war. He ended up in Angola where he was working with yet another rebel movement attempting to overthrow a country's government when he was captured by the Angolan authorities. He is now serving a 30 year prison sentence.
It’s a shame
It’s almost a redemption story given that whoever is rebelling in Angola would be trying to free them from the communists
actually in this movies Bizimungu looks like a helpful man
@@pdhung3012 He was only helpful to Paul and only because he was being bribed. He likely ordered his men to take out Tutsi civilians when Paul wasn’t around.
@@jonathanwilliams1065Angola isn't communist, you would know that if you looked up African history outside of a Call of Duty campaign.
@@bilalsadiq1450 they were
Or at least those that became the government were until 1991
'ARE YOU STUPID, GENERAL? you sit here with five stars on your chest....who do you think they're coming after?'
Such a powerful statement in so many ways. I don't think that the character of General Bizimungu ever considered the idea that he would be considered as a war criminal which, as Don Cheadle's character points out is extraordinarily dumb
"I will pay you to shoot my family"
This is what really happened to Tatiana's (Paul's wife) father during the genocide. Apparently, the interahamwe liked to kill the Tutsis by carving up their victims and the sad truth is that Tatiana's father paid the militia to shoot him instead of letting him die so slowly. This scene wasn't just added to emphasize Paul's desperation.
I heard that as well, terrible. I suppose a bullet is no way as bad as being hacked to death with a machete.
Ok, how much ?
I love how he screams "are you stupid?!"
I enjoy Hotel Rwanda. This is the hero before Black Panther of 2018
Don Cheadle plays War Machine though....
@@mariomouse8265 Yeah, I knew this really awesome role for Don Cheadle before he play War Machine
Well unlike Black Panther, Paul Rusesabagina is a real-life hero
I had the pleasure of meeting the real life Paul Rusesabagina when he spoke at Hofstra U in 2005. True hero, and incredibly warm & humble guy.
Dont even bring that one up in front if this movie.
Stunning performance. Deserved an Oscar.
I watched this movie in history class
hahaha same
Me too. Government
Magic Girl I just watched it in English class
Magic Girl How was the movie
Same in 2011. Freshman year with ms Susie Holloway.
This is probably the best acting ive ever seen in a movie
General: You will tell them that I did nothing!"
Paul: Okay then
*later at the general's trial*
Paul: He did nothing to stop the violence
General: *shocked Pikachu face*
That would be nice. In reality Rusesabagina never testified against the general or ANY other genocidaires. He’s their ally _“in real life”_ outside of the Hollywood fantasy. He did testify FOR them, but never against them.
“You cannot hurt me” Very powerful
Imagine me standing up to Israel’s IDF
The fact that Paul was 100% bluffing about this "list" is amazing. The things you will do to save your family.
Paul is a genius
He may not have had access to any list but you’d have to be stupid to think one wasn’t being made, if not by the US/UN (and it would be the Dutch not the Americans if you want to single out one nation) then by the Tusti army that was heading straight for Kigali
Bluffing or not, Paul was absolutely right. The fact that the general sat back and did nothing while the Interahamwe slaughtered innocent people like livestock gave the UN enough ammunition to charge him with war crimes. His apathetic attitude was appalling and Paul called him out on his bullshit
I don't think it was a bluff
Best scene in the movie. A man at his breaking point.
I remember this scene years ago.. Paul pull a fantastic bluff to the General. He knew he had nothing but manage to take advantage of his desperation.
The general knew that he lossing the war and without an army he be caught and trial for war crimes.
Saw this in history class and hit my feels. Don't know why this didn't win an Oscar...
The whole movie Paul is just getting bullied around by this guy, all while begging someone-anyone to help him. At this moment he finally takes charge. Such a great scene.
I don't understand why he didn't get the Oscar for this role.
Oh hang on....maybe I do
He should have gotten it. I actually liked Cheadle's performance here more than Jamie Foxx's winning turn as Ray Charles.
@@mitchellmurray5892 I agree
Ahhh who cares about that stupid little naked, gold plated man.
He did amazing
Ben Shapiro Lol what’s silly is to pretend it’s doesn’t
My favorite scene. Please shoot me it would be a blessing!
Don is so handsome in this scene😍😍
If this scene really did happen, I can imagine the General thinking that he "told him so" when he was captured and put on trial for war crimes.
i've watched this movie again and again and still want to watch it
EXACTLY
omg this scene is so good
🇺🇳 issues an arrest warrant on the Rwandan higher-ups, but they don’t send an intervention force to capture them? Bruh
We'll just show up after the genocide is over.

Wonderful job acting, excellent program! Terrible tragedy of all those people
Everyone is tough until you end up on our list lol. Jk, always loved this movie
USA homie!
Glad Will Smith didn’t take Playing Paul Ruesasabina Don Cheadle was perfect 👍🏽. Don almost got robbed of an award for his performance.
a nice little detail, which I'm not sure if it's intentional or not, is that Paul stops shaving and grows a stubble after his family was almost killed...
You're not sure if it was intentional? Like the Director didn't notice the facial hair? Are you dumb?
I thought it was because they ran out of water in the hotel, and therefor he couldn’t shave as well
When a hotel manager outsmarts a military officer:
I retired from the military in 1993. I may have ended up in Rwanda. Served during the Gulf War tho.
One of my favorite movies
the real black panther
*Colonel James Rhodes:* So I landed in the Generals palace, dropped the tank in front of him and was like, "BOOM!!! You looking for this???"
The war machine before the actual war machine
How is this even a comparison? The black panther was a line of xenophobes until tchalla and even then, what did he do compared to what this man did?
@@nikosfilipino exactly
He still ended up on the list in real life 😂😂😂😂
Hutu you think they are coming after?
Man this movie is so depressing I can't even pun in joy
Threaten a general with warcrimes is pretty brave, I gonna be honest.
He was so clever and true sur over and protecter
He was arrested anyway by 🇦🇴
Thank God. And Rutaganda, and that SOB Kabuga was captured this year in France.
I gotta re-watch this movie
He knows how to apply the laws of power. Robert Greene should analyze this movie
Imagine a similar argument occurs between a drill sergeant & a recruit
What?
I actually wished that the story where Paul lies to the general & then after Paul gets his family back, he snitches on the General. That’ll give me a good laugh
I don't think there was anything to snitch on. The General really didn't commit any war crimes, at least none that we know of.
@@TheStapleGunKid he's was the head of the Rwandan Chief of Staff, of course he coordinated the military's genocide operation
Okay I didn't realize the General character was actually a real life person. I just looked it up and yes it turns out yes he was the chief of staff for the Rwandan army. Interesting. Also it turns out he was arrested for war crimes and was actually going through his trial when this movie was released. The film really should have mentioned that in the ending credits.
@@simonroh4958 The militia committed the genocide right? They were told to do it over radio via code phrases. Though it seems like the military was largely complicit in it.
@@usul573 “It was the Rwandan government army which, *in many places,* started the massacres, in particular with its three elite units: The presidential guard, the [Kanombe] airborne commando battalion, and the reconnaissance battalion, which had French advisors. This was the case in Kigali. It was also the case on April 20, 1994 in Butare where two military transport planes disembarked soldiers from the presidential guard and from the airborne commando battalion.” [J. Morel 2010]
An incident watched with indifference... 😢
It’s a shame Don Cheadle didn’t win the award for Best Actor that year. (It went to Jamie Foxx for playing Ray Charles in “Ray”)
First time watching the movie there were so many times where they were fucked but got out of it. It almost seemed as if it was all scripted to even be considered non-fiction
It is part-fiction. You can get some clarity from this article:

shamali here we go again with the whole said survivor isn't a hero etc bullshit. Sorry I mean anyone who survives and writes about it is automatically considered a lier and fraud
@@Peateargryfin exactly
Reality is often stranger than fiction.
Read the accounts of Roy Benavidez during his time in the military. Even Ronald Reagan said that if his actions were in a movie, he wouldn't believe it.
This is why I always handwave and just enjoy military action scenes when watching a movie. To many times in history has the "impossible" became reality.

If I was the General I wouldn't be scared at all especially if you didnt do nothing..
Don Cheadle said you walk around with five stars on your chest
🙋🏾♀️i just had on a star sweat shirt and olive green shoes and camo bag 🤣 I wouldnt worry though
TLDR: the general is in prison now
No appreciation for Fana Mokoena?
They still hate Dr. Mandla Sithole from Generations and his EFF membership .
To think Paul is now on trial for war crimes or something like that
Unfortunately, it’s true. He was arrested in Kigali for terrorism charges when a Rwandan group he was associated with took responsibility for a terrorist attack in 2018. Last September, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
What did the general do to the tutsi ?
alex kanyima He committed systematic rape and murder against them, according to his conviction later in International Court. Obviously most of his crimes could not be proven in court because he killed most witnesses. But some of the crimes were proven, such as this one:
During a meeting on 4/7/94 Gen. Augustin Bizimungu told Hutu militiamen that “You should start killing all Tutsi people. Start with your own neighbors before moving into other areas of the commune.” He then assured them that weapons had been placed at their disposal and he promised to provide them with fuel for burning down the homes of Tutsi people. The following day he made good his promise by distributing fuel to the militiamen. Following Bizimungu’s speech, the militiamen killed 150 Tutsi people in Rwankeri Sector, Ruhengeri.
(Paragraph 861 of the Bizimungu Judgment and Paragr. 55 of his Amended Indictment.)
alex kanyima
He commanded the Interahamwe which operated similarly like the Nazi SS.
and the world leaders who stood idly by ?
Yeah dude the UN sent a mission but said they couldn't act in defense, then pulled most of the troops. 10 belgians were killed because their CO ordered them to stand down and hand over their weapons because they weren't sure it would be legal. French soldiers left 65000 tutsis for dead, came back, put them in a mass grave, and put a volleyball court over it
slaughtered them.
1:17
That could've been handled better.....
The general should have learned from what happened to Yamashita. He tried to stop war crimes but because he failed one time and navy personnel nominally under his command massacre American civilians we hanged him
Bizimungu’s case is not like that. He was found guilty for his own crimes and not someone else’s. Quote:
During a meeting on 4/7/94 Gen. Augustin Bizimungu *told* Hutu militiamen that “You should start killing all Tutsi people. Start with your own neighbors before moving into other areas of the commune.” He then *assured them* that weapons had been placed at their disposal and *he promised* to *provide* them with fuel for burning down the homes of Tutsi people. The following day *he made good his promise* by *distributing* fuel to the militiamen. Following *Bizimungu’s speech,* the militiamen killed 150 Tutsi people in Rwankeri Sector, Ruhengeri.
(Paragraph 861 of the Bizimungu Judgment and Paragr. 55 of his Amended Indictment.)

Why didn’t the 🇺🇸 send the CIA to arrest him
Simon Roh CIA? and arrest him? Lol stupid idea
Andy Opera why not the US already has an arrest warrant on the General
Simon Roh True but like what about the conflict over there. It would be impossible to able to arrest him. Unless they just kill him with an military aircraft or use air strike just like the Iranian general. But the American said they don’t want to intervene. But he still on that list.
Andy Opera u know why didn’t the UN intervene with the same method used in 🇱🇾, that would’ve reduced casualties
Simon Roh The UN did intervene, they sent General Oliver and his men, if you did watch the movies. The American, French, British and some other countries did not intervene that’s all.
