  • @aptudo

    Your demos are the most critical ones I watch on my quest. I still don't own a synth capable of being a "modulate everything" swiss army knife with a lot of physical controls. My favorite sounding synth is the Waldorf Blofeld, based on demos by a diverse army of UA-camrs, and I've never heard an instrument that, IMO, sounds anything like it. I'm just not sure I can get into a flow state with that UI. But I'm rambling. Thanks for all you do, Jexus.

    • @Jexus
      @Jexus  3 роки тому +26

      Everything is true and everything is false depending how you look at it. I think the critical issue when it comes to synths is time and how you value it. When I was younger I had a lot of free time, plus I thought I would live forever. I would spend endless hours discovering & learning the most convoluted interfaces and the potential for sound creation. When you do it this way, eventually you get the "flow state" and virtually every synth feels like a "swiss army knife". You warm up to the synth, become sentimental, etc. Now my approach is different; firstly, having several separate tools seems more fun than one "swiss army knife";) Secondly, I started to value synths which have good UI (it saves time) in the first place, plus good sound. I mean... satisfactory. You don't really need "best", it's an illusion anyways. A lot of goodness comes from production and composition / dynamics, not necessarily the synth itself. But I'm rambling. 🤣 Thanks for your kind words.

    Is the noise like in patches like Sweetest Friend 8:53 coming from the sound design, overloading the Opsix, or running too hot to your interface? It's cool either way, just curious if it's a capability in the Opsix itself.

    • @Jexus
      @Jexus  2 роки тому +2

      Hey. I always record my sounds straight out of the synth into the audio card. There is absolutely no noise on the way. So if you are hearing any noise / crackles / etc, it is my design choice and it's there on purpose, an element of the patch itself. I made an algorithm specifically for this patch because I wanted to imitate a vinyl record crackle:)

    Just bought one of these. Will putting your sounds on the Opsix overwrite the default library or will your library add itself to empty custom slots? Also, how many presets in total does the Opsix have including custom sets? Thanks this is my first synth.

    • @Jexus
      @Jexus  Рік тому +2

      Hey, thanks. You can do both things. You can overwrite existing presets, or you can just place them further down the list after the last factory preset. Of course it all depends how many presets you currently have on your hardware Opsix. If all your current and custom presets exceed the number of memory slots, then you will have to make a decision which to keep. The official librarian software gives you some freedom of arrangement.

      @Jexus  Рік тому +4

      Thanks! Judging from the standpoint of a vintage synth owner, the raw sound quality of Opsix is low to the point of being non-existent;) This is not the type of synth where you detune the oscillators and tweak the filter and a nice tone starts to come out. FM and mod matrix are key words here.

      @@Jexus Hi Jesus, thank you for your answer. Yes, agreed! I got the opsix and several other FM/PD synths as well as some vintage and new analog synths.
      The opsix is extremely versatile. What you can do with a BPF, noise plus the comb filter (physical modeling) is crazy and I mean not only the typical string synthesis. But on the other hand the synth lacks depths and voice seperation. It gets muddy very fast when playing more keys and the effects are so cheap that they worsen it. It reminds me of a VST. Nevertheless, making single key sounds or experimental drones, the opsix really shines.

      @@Leviathan-mj8gi Very definitely true. You just gotta be careful wit that plastic. Try not to drop it so much etc. Though I _love_ the "space age" design of the Prophecy...Great for triggering samples or whatever. Also makes a decent controller. + the keyboard plays polyphonic over midi! Pretty cool. Had it since new, way back in the day..What was that like '96? lol....time flies

    it this 100 pcent the dry sound of the op six without any EQ , treatments, etc ?

    • @Jexus
      @Jexus  2 роки тому +6

      Practically speaking yes. But if you want to have a 100% accurate information, I'll say this; sometimes when the patch is rising in volume in an unexpected, random fashion (eg. some resonant pads) I will control it with a compressor / limiter. But that does not affect the sound in any manner that a person would be abe to hear. It just makes the volume peaks a bit less loud.

      @@Jexus Thanks ! Well, I'm a hardcore fan of the DX7, and the Opsix seems the best possible upgrade of it, altough the Essence FM is maybe an expensive better pal, but the Opsix overall / general sound seems a bit to clean, sharp, pristine and clear, whereas my DX7 mk1 sound consistent, woody, with nice mediums and a bit of gritiness. maybe the 12 bit converters, noisy outputs and old shitty output gives it this character....

      @@Jexus By the way, your DX7 demo is the best by far. I bought this DX7 in 2006 and get a bit disapointed by it, until I saw your vidéo and it gave me the will of try new sounds with it and program it more. The fact that you like good music, from Boards of Canada to NiN, or Gary Numan, also inspired me. Like some other friends of mine in France. Also love some of your songs.Thank you !

      @@ldallagl You're right. There something lo-fi going on in the DX-7 and it sounds worse (= better 😆). My old DX-7 really inspired me to make music.

      @@Jexus excactly. Sounding worse = better. Modern Synths and plugins are in search of perfection and high quality audio (emulations or not) They do not understand that's what it's all about : fuck oversampling, aliasing is better, etc ... It kinda sound like a Analog synth but FM, Basses are sooooo fat on a PA

      @wickeddubz 3 роки тому

      It’s all about flavor, sound and workflow. Yep, wavestate is very deep, but it has steeper learning curve.

    • @sssncodesstuff3364
      @sssncodesstuff3364 3 роки тому

      @@wickeddubz steeper learning curve than FM synth? I don't think so, wavestate is still basically substractive synth/rompler with layering and huge modulation possibilities, thats easier to grasp than FM synthesis for most.

    • @wickeddubz
      @wickeddubz 3 роки тому +1

      @@sssncodesstuff3364 well, it’s not that simple. You can use standard subtractive mode, but really awesome stuff is in wave sequencing mode. Taking attack from one instrument and adding resonator from another instrument is more into physical modeling territory than just subtractive synthesis with modulation. FM is tougher because it makes you think more like an engineer or scientist. Harmonics, their parameters and ratios, carrier and mod frequencies, getting new sounds by spectrum morphing, etc.
