Great topic! I grew grocery story mystery garlic, and has a good harvest too. The elephant garlic not so good. Someone beat me to the harvest and took them. My nearest neighbor is a half mile walk, so must have been pretty desperate. It was only five plants grown as an experiment, so not a big loss. Fall planting is just around the corner for me (Sylacauga Alabama). I have potatoes chitting for planting the first week in July. About mid July, I'll start seeds for cabbage. Then in August Brocolli, cauliflower, and Nappa or Hilton Cabage. I have to find a spot for carrots and turnips, but first have to dig out two raised beds and move them to where they get more light in the fall and winter. I have a spot picked out for them thet gets ful light in the winter, and is partially shaded in the summer-perfect. Also on my to do list is making room for a chicken coop and run. I purchased five hens (chicks) three Rhode Island Red, and two Speckled Sussex. Now that I have livestock, my garden is no longer a garden, it is a small homestead.

I got my fall seed order from hoss tools last week. Fall//winter/spring is go time in Southern Arizona. It all starts indoors in the hot summer. One thing I learned last year was Waltham broccoli does not grow well here. Best to grow hybrids like green magic. It's possible to get a tomato plant through the winter with frost cover. Summers may suck, but the rest of the year we have the best weather.

You're gonna probably have a lot of pest pressure on your corn since you started late, so be ready to treat them with BT and/or spinosad. Worms are always worse later in the season. Good luck!

Do my fall seeds need to be started indoors? I have always purchased starts for fall/winter because I do not have an indoor space to start seeds. Can they be started in a semi-shady location outdoors in the summer heat (Texas)?

I started my first round of Fall seeds two days ago. I have not yet had a true Fall harvest. All my “Fall” crops come up in winter. And some I miss or they bolt because of the wonky weather changes. I’ve learned the same lesson twice. Not this year. I’m also learning now to plant things that have different maturities so we can get some early and the have throughout them whole season.

What’s your ideal garden bed size and wood size for the beds you have? Those look to be about 6” or 8” boards unless they’re slightly buried?

Enjoyed hearing your thought process as a intermediate gardener. I am learning…thanks!

I am surprised your tomatoes end so early…? July? I am in NJ and mine are just coming in July, august, September… even October sometimes.

I'm in Oklahoma and expect to pull out my tomatoes end of July beginning of August. This year I planted them in March but usually I plant early April. I've been harvesting tomatoes for a month now and they are all loaded with fruit. I'm no longer getting fruit set since we are in the 90s every day except for the cherry tomatoes. My determinates will definitely be done in less than a month but some people here will try to get their indeterminates to survive July and August with temps 90s and 100s and little to no rain by watering them twice a day. I don't think it's worth it for the small harvest I get in the October.

I'm the same as you, I'm lucky to get a red slicer by September. Cherry tomatoes are not a problem. I eat those all through late July into September. Having basil next to it makes it a nice snack in the garden. Lol. Crazy how different it really is though for everyone. David The Good has problems growing tomatoes in Alabama and Florida. So it's so different depending on your microclimates.

South-Central Texas here … it’s about time for us to pull out our tomato plants as they are getting baked in the heat and they are succumbing to fungal diseases and pests. We will plant again in late summer and harvest through Fall to almost Christmas.

All I'm thinking about is next season! I broke my ankle BAD while walking barefoot in my own backyard 3 weeks ago! I've been on bed rest for the last 2 weeks post surgery and haven't been able to get out to the garden. I've been trying to teach/train my husband, but this isn't his scene. I'm living vicariously through you until I can get back out there! I've basically given up and will reset in July/August. 😵‍💫😭Good thing we have a long growing season in South Texas!

I love these short update videos! I’m getting ready for fall even though it feels weird 😂 I got a notice today saying in zone 7 I should be starting cabbage today. So I’ll get onto that soon!

I wish I heard this message a few years ago when my fall garden was unsuccessful. I now know to start seeds in July and August, not in September when it starts cooling down. So this has been at the front of my mind lately. I just planted tomato seeds for fall harvest and I'm finalizing my list of cool season plants that I will start around 4th of July. I love the fall garden since cool season plants produce better and taste better compared to the spring.

    Good morning.
Wishing you a happy Father's day!
Getting a heat wave mid nineties all week, this northerner is ready for fall.
I'm going to plant brassicas the beginning of August last year they didn't get enough growth and fizzzled out when planted later.
