Ok. This guy probably saw flintlock guns being used as a small child and went through the age of cap and ball to modern firearms. Horse to train to plane. From telegraph to radio to tv and phone. Civil War, ww1 and 2. What a time to be alive.
Another great video. Thanks for including a man whom the public may not be aware of, even though Milton was much more of a fine lawman and shootist than many like Masterson, or Earp, that tv and film have touted. I read an account of Milton buying a .44-40 revolver so he could use the same ammo in both rifle and pistol. The first time he fired it, the cylinder got "hung up tighter than Dick's hatband" to quote Milton. Being a pragmatist, he traded it for a .45. Keep up the good work, and "we'll see you on down the trail"😁
The reason so many lawmen kept their Peacemakers in 45 Colt despite the danger of a 45 accidently being inserted and jamming up their rifle. That possiblity was why John Wayne's gunbelt had a 45/70 cartridge separating his rifle and pistol ammo (although I wonder if Wayne himself knew the reason or just copied it because it looked cool).
@@ahhamartin I have been a fan of the SAA revolver forever. I have several in .45 Colt, 38-40, 32-20, 41 Colt, and .44 Special. These are all Colts not reproductions. The newest being made in 1936. The .45 has a 7 1/2 inch barrel and the rest 5 1/2. The 32-20 belonged to my G-G- Uncle. I prefer the 7 1/2 inch because it is perfectly balanced and the barrel length is just right for optimum ballistic efficiency for the .45 Colt cartridge. Take a 7 1/2 in. Colt and place it on your forefinger just in front of the trigger guard and you will see what I mean. The late Mike Venturino, in an article he wrote, said Milton's problem with the .44 WCF hanging up his cylinder was due to the fact that the .44 was a rifle cartridge and had harder primers. The cone shaped firing pins on the original Colts were not efficient in striking the primer. That was corrected in the early 1930's with a new firing pin design. Oh, and John Wayne actually placed a 45-70 round in his belt in a strategic spot to remind him he only had 6 rounds left in his belt. If you look closely at his belt you will see that past the 45-70 he has 6 rounds left on the right side. If I'm not mistaken, I believe he learned that trick from Wyatt Earp himself.
@@Snuffy03 "Duke" died ??? That part I didn't know. My favorite model P was my 4 3/4, 38 wcf made in 1901, but Hank Jr. liked it more so it left one day when he came through Paris TN. I heard that alternate "six left" thing before and consider it ridiculous, but darn I didn't know about Mike. Thanks for telling me.
@@ahhamartin Yes. Duke passed away on June 9, 2024 at his home in Montana. He was a fantastic gun writer.
Thanks for this. I’m a big Jeff Milton fan. Over the years I’ve written a few articles about him, and I talked about him in a few videos. I started off with Halley’s bio, and I read anything I can find on him.
Glad you liked it. Yeah, he was a legend for sure. Hope someone makes a movie about him one day.
@@duelist1954 Just to have the confidence to face the odds some of these guys faced alone back then...it's amazing.
Louis Lamour knew Jeff Milton. One of the reasons his books were so authentic was his first-hand knowledge of the people, lifestyle and areas he drew his stories from. Great video! I look forward to this every Saturday!
I've never read a bad Louis L'Amour book, and I've read LOT of Louis L'Amour books.
@@ArizonaGhostriders
I actually had a woman offer me her deceased husband's book collection, which included a lot of Louis L'Amour, simply because she noticed a Louis L'Amour book in my back pocket. All I had to do was go to her house and take the boxes off her porch.
Jeff Milton was from my home county. My mother's youngest brother was named for his father. His family's plantation was here before the war, and many of the family still live here.
I love hearing about these men and women of the old west. Thanks again for another Saturday video. 🤠
Hey Santee and crew, I throughly enjoy your videos. I just wanted to say great job, I am a living historian and reenactor that lives approximately 30 minutes from where Jeff Milton was born in Florida. I have heard of him for many years thanks to our local historian, glad y’all did a great video on Milton.
Thanks Santee for another great video on an old west lawman. 👍
Being a retired third generation peace officer from a family of lawmen dating back to the 1880's, I truly enjoy hearing about old west lawmen. 🤠
@@ArizonaGhostriders It was my absolute pleasure sir. My family dedicated ourselves to the safety and security of those who were in our care. And those who harmed our folks occasionally did reach room temperature if they had hostile intentions. The rest went to jail. 😏
One of the real treasures of my life is my copy of "Jeff Milton A Good Man with A Gun" which my wife bought for me in Tombstone, Arizona.
Way to go, Santee! Great bringing this story to everybody. Thanks, Pard!
Great video. I read the book overnight. Great reading. Thanks, Santee. He was definitely an awesome lawman of great moral convictions.
Love the video. I am supposedly distantly related to him. I still have family in Marrianna, Florida, where he was raised. It's very distant but cool none the less. I now have a new Western hero. His father was the Confederate Governor of Florida.
Really interesting, I’d heard of Milton, but didn’t know that much about him. Always like learning something new about the old West.
Good afternoon mate, hadn't heard of this gentleman before sounds like a wholesome man with a fast trigger finger for good.
Much love have a blessed week ahead.
Mike over at Duelist1954
Did a video on the savage 1907 semiautomatic pistol, and in that video he mentioned that in 1917 Jeff Milton used a Savage pistol on a would-be robber who wounded the bank teller
Thanks Santee. I didn't know about Jeff Milton. Great video Sir.🤠🇺🇲
Thanks santee one of my favorite old west characters. Very underrated
A cowboy emigrated to Wales
and opened a ranch in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.
Unfortunately, none of his cattle survived the branding.
Another great episode Santee, cant express how much good you do for us old west interested in the world. Keep up the amazing work you do :) Pew Pew!
This was so interesting. I'm not sure that he's as well-known as he deserves to be. As always, the audios/visuals were superb, Santee. 🤠🌞👏🏻👏🏻
His ashes were scattered in the Old Tucson parking lot. I heard this years before meeting Ben Traywick.
Cool, so you heard of it, too. I was hoping for someone else to verify that story.
I always love these videos! Thank you for all your hard work, Sante. 🤠
Great video. I have heard of Milton, but didn't know much about him. Thanks, Santee.
Great episode Santee, thank you!! I enjoyed "the coffee visit" see you next week!!
I wonder if Jeff Milton ever met Virgil Earp. They each had one good arm to shake hands with!
Another interesting historical piece . Looking forward to the next one 👍🏴
Thanks, Santee. Obviously quite the man and more than up to the task of facing down those who opposed him.
Also It's nice to see the video of you in your earlier years on Arizona Ghostriders at 2:14
Great video, there are so many forgotten good tough guys. Keep there stories alive.
Great work Santee. Nice to see a video on someone who is lesser known from the old west.
Great video Santee,
I may read that book. I've never heard of Jeff Milton.
Have a great weekend.
JT
I've heard he was supposed to be the inspiration for 'Big Iron'.
No. Big Iron is about an Arizona Ranger and Milton wasn't one of those.
Thank you Santee, you always come up with some great history. Have a great weekend. :)
Thanks for sharing amigo! This is what old west is all about and much, much more ,the real deal for sure 🤠
Rex was the manager? smart move, guys: even Mr. Milton wouldn’t mess with him! 🤣😎
Hadn’t heard about him before so extremely interesting learning about a legitimate gunfighter lawman who wasn’t borderline shady or outright corrupt
Makes sense he was hanging out with a similar guy, John Slaughter.
Thanks for another great watch, Santee!💯 Hope all is well my friend.🍻 (I have watched countless Western Movies & Series, but am FINALLY watching the original Magnificent Seven this morning.😂)
I was just reading about him and George Scarborough
You didn't want those two ole boys out to get you, that's for damn sure!
Great episode! I’m surprise we did not see a “From Milton Bradley!” commercial reference...but then “that’s just stupid”
Until 1932?! Wow. What firearms did he carry through so broad a time period? 1880s-1930s
I thought about it, but could not find a funny enough clip.
Some of Milton's guns go up for sale occassionally.
When I get a little more time, I'm gona read that book and for free I can't beat the price of it
Helluva story! Great bio.
Thanks for listening. Make sure he's not on the train you're robbing today!
Wow, what an interesting fella. I'm laid up with sciatica at the moment and that might be the perfect read to take my mind off of it. Prayers requested. There's an idea for a video. I'm sure that the old cowboys and....."service workers" suffered from sucklike things. What did they do for it? Thank you for your videos. They've been a source of great knowledge and entertainment for so long.
Hey there Santee, could you do another video about early semi-auto pistols of the Wild West. There was one called The Shwarzolze 1898, and the Colt 1900.
I would still like to see a video on Commodore Perry Owen, a man with REAL true grit!!!!
All of it takes REAL true grit. Milton probably had more of it.
I will do a video on Owens.
Another great video! Love the biopics you do. What was the movie you showed at 3:30? Also, highly recommend Chuck Stanton for an episode! Great western villain.
So very intrestingly awsome and intrestingly information video, i really liked and enjoyed it.
I hot a ton of inspiration for my old west frontier, retro 1950s to early/mid 2000s, biblical mythology and ancient mesopatamian and sumerian mythology, demonology, eytemology and lexicon inspired writing projects.
I learned a lot about Jeff Milton, who I hadnt heard about till now, great job and well done.
I named two old west frontier and bussiness characters in my stories Mòshushoah Amun Tasra (Mosah ) and his friend Jahòzuah Amar Edlin ( Jessa ).
I named a outlaw-TechMagician Spy in my stories GanDorv Waru.
@@ArizonaGhostriders thats interesting and cool.
Right now im getting even further inspiration from a channel called Ancient Mystery, where im learning about ancient mesopatamian and sumerian mythology, ancient demonology, mythological history, lexicon and eytemology.
Im applying what im learning to my writing projects.
Santee, Thank you very much for the greatest Old West content. Is there a movie about Jeff Milton you can recommend? You and Mrs. Pew Pew have a beautiful and blessed weekend. LORD GOD Bless and stay vigilant.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Me Too. Thank you and hug the kitty cat for me.
I grew up south west of Tucson near Drexel Heights. There is a road over there called Milton Road. Possibly named after him?
Great video about a real life hero of mine. Can't find the link to the book, though.
Well Santee since you live in the desert if I do see you down the trail I hope you got a bottle of water for me. 😂 anyway great video and I always enjoy them thank you so much
Will you ever do a video of Ned Kelly the famous outlaw of Australia
Hardin was "involved" with Martin M'Rose's wife/gf when Chief Milton killed him.
@@ArizonaGhostriders indeed it do. Mrs.M'Rose was a real "Wildcat"!
Hey Santee! Another very interesting video, and another cool guy to look into lol. Quick question, been thinking of getting a couple pieces of big iron, which reproduction company do you likes SAA the best, or is it just Colt? Also , is the Remington style better?
Colt is really pricey. I would go with Pietta or Uberti and get a clone, They have Remington, S & W, and Colt clones.
It really depends on your wants and needs. They are all good in their own way. Some are better for better hands.
I wonder if there's any connection to the town of Milton Florida in the panhandle.
Santee, were bolt action rifles used in the old west?
Towards the end, maybe. Our Springfield model didn't come out until 1903. Although other countries made the rifles earlier, I'm not sure there is any evidence of them coming over to the west.
"...My name? ...Aah, John marst... I mean JEFF eeh... Jeff Milton!, yeah that's it"
