I have been playing this one for days and it never gets old. So many different sounds from this cord progression,,,and for some reason it makes it easy to play what i feel...thanks for sharing ...much appreciation for taking the time to give us something so great to play along with....and enjoy...

This is model E phrygian changing to A harmonic minor due to the E maj chord being used instead of an E min, which adds the sharpened G note. Fun to jam with though. Thanks

You can see it as going from phrygian dominant to phrygian, the A minor harmonic scale shape fits with E phrygian, not phrygian dominant.

Hi. Playing in minor keys is challenging because though they are so harmonically and melodically rich they lack a satisfying tonic chord and that V7resolution. Min7 wants to be a ii7. I can almost live with a i6 but it's really a min7b5 chord. Yes both Melodic and Harmonic Minor have V7 chords but a minMaj7 chord sounds like some tug boats pl;aying the score to the final march to your execution. Phrygian is based on the iii chord in diatonic harmony so it has a b2 but of course it's minor. Music educators are guilty of teaching scalar improv technique so anything with a b5 is called Phrygian. The V7b9 is the 5 chord from Harm Min unfortunately called Phrygian Dom or Phryg Myxolydian--again the overemphasis on the church modes. This can't be A Harm MIn because there's the old Am-G-F-E progression. Best way to play this is as A Nat Min and use the Egyptian scale for the 5 chord. On the 1st string play G#-F-E. 4th string A-G#-5th F-E. 6th string THEN go Phrygian with the G F E.
it definitely does!! Phrygian is the 3rd church mode based on iii of the diatonic scale. The uniqueness is the b2 and unfortunately music educators started calling anything with a b2 phrygian.So the 5 chord of Harm Min started to be called Phryg dominant. The jazz guys like to borrow from other keys and harmonies but they're so tied to the modes that's their reference point instead of chords.

Really?? How do you get that G or G7 chord out of A Harm Min?? It's in A Nat Min and then they borrow the Harm Min 5 chord for our accustomed resolution.

When the G and F major chords are played, is there any extra tone to add flavour to it? I dont know, cause it sounds like an added 7th or something..
Maky Tondr I don't have the best ear but i know that using F7 and G7 are pretty common in this progression

Just play dude, don't worry about the scales... you shouldn't have any problem playing to this if you have knowledge of the fretboard

Xeno Basically what I mean is you shouldn't be so conscious about what scales you're playing, as long as you have knowledge of where the notes are you'll be fine. I probably explained it a bit wrong.

Nah, it's E phrygian, or A minor. Those keys are enharmonic with one another.
