...Leicester when she carried him-as the reason for his bewildering deformityHe also had a growth, which grew from his upper jaw.It resembled a rudimentary tusk or trunk. This was cut away-yet on his work pamphlet there is a suggestion of it in the illustration. He may not have been so sensitive to being called the elephant man himself, because it after all gave him a good living,&for the reasons I've mentioned,as us.But I certainly agree with you, &I hope one day he'll only be called by his name.

Wait. I just have one question. Why was he called "The Elephant Man" if he looks nothing like an elephant? I see it as kind of insulting. Poor man. If only empathy was a trait people had. If I could, I'd thank Frederick Treves for being a good soul to Joseph.
A real pity, that in the opening minutes of this documentary, the hospital archivist and museum narrator choose to still use the shameful and unkind reference ‘elephant man’. Following Merricks death in 1890 both medical and social science developed at a fast and very welcome pace. Therefore, it now seems unacceptable to me that Joseph Merrick still remains effectively an exhibit. I am a retired Registered Nurse of 40 years NHS Service, so I accept that studying the bodily remains of the long dead can be of great clinical value, but think it’s high time now to give Joseph a much belated Christian burial. To his new found friends and acquaintances (including Sir Frederick Treves and HRH Princess Alexandra) it is said he frequently testified to his Christian Belief and his unending love for his deceased mother. I hope, that some day soon Joseph Carey Merrick can be moved from the said medical school and laid to rest in Leicestershire, in the vicinity of his mother Mary Jane Potterton Merrick,
