Around that same period, we had the films Gothic (1987), Haunted Summer (1988) and Rowing With The Wind (1988), all three about the Lake of Geneva holidays of Shelley, Byron, Mary and Claire.
Eric Stoltz did a good job. It's a shame a fine stage actor like Philip Anglim (a very good Macbeth) had to overdo it as Byron. The scenes with the Shelleys are the strongest in this at times compelling, at times uneven film.
i worked on preproduction on this film... it was to have been shot by the great John Houston who's health was failing at that time...he decided to make his last picture(The Dead) for his son...next director choice was Andrei Konchalefsky who was releasing Runaway Train and working on Shy People....Can't find a good copy of this film ..would love to have one or see it posted...
@ChrisOCookPoetry Well I guess I should say "Hello, Stranger", as they did in old films! Nice to see you. (At present I don't have "Haunted Summer" up, but I may put some back online. Not sure.) Waving hi from the other side of the country.
I agree with Siskel and Ebert: the locations and costumes are beautiful to look at, but the story is uneven and relies too much on decadence rather than the meeting of great minds. I personally would have liked to see more of Alex Winter as Polidori too.
@bloboshitful wow that was so bad a A 5 year old would shake his head.I don't understand whby you have such an obssesion with me and ebert is and I don't know why you created several accounts to ebert and I don't know why you are acting as if i'm attacking you when I lost interest in arguing a while ago
Just enjoy the film.It is magical and will move you.The music is beautiful and the scenes will last in your memory for the rest of your life...

I never ever heard of this one. I was in the Army at the time. I have heard and have seen Gothic though.
Someone said that no matter what movie Eric Stolz is in, he plays Eric Stolz!

OMG, This thing is Ebert? He tells you which movie to see?
When Ebert came on, it was honestly more haunting and ugly than any horror movie. Maybe his/her/its fans don't think so because they are worse
