I always have my baby with me when I am taking our car. I need to create a go bag that will fit his needs and mine in case we need to go on foot. This is a great video to get some ideas. Thank you!
Good call. We had a major highway I-195 completely shut down both sides, mid day due to flooding recently. People were stuck in their cars gridlocked on the highway in the rain for 4 hours out of nowhere.
@@chefbabyryan1 oh my gosh. If that is winter, it will be horrible. I probably should keep a blanket in the car just in case. We get really cold winter here where I live.
Good discussion as always. In these small packs I think it's important to always have at least a 500 ml bottle of water in addition to the filter. If the bag is intended for shorter distances then I would not worry so much about redundant multitools and multiple fire starting methods. Would always have a couple of protein bars, spare bootlaces and socks, and something for dealing with blisters.
Moving fast sounds nice but for most of us is not realistic. I'm 6 ft / 185 lb and in pretty good shape but at age 65 I'm not out running very many people even with shorts, sneakers, and no pack. The pack I keep in the car weighs about 17.5 lb including 40 oz of water. Can't out run anyone but can move with purpose for a long time without getting fatigued.
also undies...yep have a small backpack and a small plastic container with emergency stuff...and extra carry bags like supermarket ones we have in NZ that can hold other things if needed
Yep, and good walking shoes.
If you have to walk 20 miles or more to get home those office shoes or work boots are not what you want.
Dark sunglasses. If there is nuke inbound warning put therm on. It might reduce the blindness from the flash. A disposable poncho in case of bad weather or possible fallout.
I got to walk 86 miles to get home, need to stick to the bare essentials to make it home in 3 or 4 days
Look for a wider bag so the weight is closer to your body rather than a back pack that sticks out 16 to 24 inches. Makes a big difference by not pulling your upper body back. Pack heavy things closer to your body and higher up on the pack. These things make a big difference on your fatigue. Also leave room to add things as needed on your journey home.

$29.98 from Walmart for 6 or more years. I like it so much I got a 2nd one but the first hasn't worn out yet. I use it for my EDC/get home and it goes everywhere with me. It is comfortable at just under 20lbs.

Just look for a backpack the size you need with pockets on the side rather than the front. We tend to put small heavier items in small pockets for easy grab. Like flashlights, multi tools, saws, power banks, etc. Better to have that weight close to your body and up high. I found that out the hard way in the Army. 👍

My big pack has 3 liter hydration pack with hose so don't have undo for drink & from refugee medical get small first aid kits that rip right off. Think u should also check out bear independent

How did it go, what did you include?
Years ago I got my get home bag set up from watching this channel. I ended up using a maxpedition Jumbo (next size larger than the fat boy) for this exact same reason. I’m here to move not camp. I work 30 miles from home so figure 2 days. I kept it slim, trim, and light weight. Incorporating my EDC to compliment the get home bag I leave in my trunk. I lashed on a wool blanket to the bottom for a sleep system and have 2 mountain house meals for calories. The jumbo also has a bottle holder for a Nalgene bottle and cup. The only thing of Bear Indepentents 10 C’s of survival I can’t fit in it is a radio, and I can molle on a pouch for that.
Great idea to show yourself "on the run" with these packs.

Great video. Some ideas: use an orange bandana (filtering and signaling), if in a more tactical situation you could use the Streamlight 14512 Sidewinder Compact II Military Model as it has a headlamp strap and has red, blue and IR lighting, however a little bulkier. Also DirectGlow 1.5 inch Mini Glow Sticks are helpful and take up hardly any room (Can use to leave a trail at night or for undetectable low lighting). Thanks again for a great video 😊

Excellent video. You've got me thinking . Lots of good tips included in your bags . I will duplicate a lot of it but also customize to my needs. Ie 2 pair of cheater glasses . I also keep a 2nd hand foldable bike in my truck, striped down and painted Camo and dark . No chrome No reflectors etc . I can cover a lot of ground quickly on the road or off Rd . And if needed it can be hidden along the way ( temporarily abandoned ,,,, or left. , to continue on foot ) . Thank you . Your video are always spot on .

My vehicle GHB is just a primitive black school pack so that it doesn't draw any attention because in most sudden scenarios outside of your home, you won't have time to get your preps.

I live in southeast Virginia. It has been up to 100 degrees F in the summer and down to 0 degrees F in the winter. My get home bag is being changed constantly as the seasons change. Having a summer get home bag when it's freezing won't work. Keep up with it, folks!
My EDC/GHB are the Mustery Ranch “Urban Assault” bags - I use the 18L for warm temperatures and the 21L for cold temperatures.
They’re very plain looking black bags that looks just like any other bag people here carry regularly.
I always have water, trauma kits, boo-boo kit, lights, urban survival gear, local maps, socks and snacks etc.
Everything I need to get me home from anywhere in the city, including surrounding areas.
Including my water it all comes in at around 12 pounds.
This setup is exactly what I carry for a total of 6.2 miles every day…
Do the things.
a few years ago I did a video on a modular system using the 3v gear posse (7 liter sling bag with firearm compartment) to get me home if its under 30 miles then paired with a kelty 30 liter redwing tactical to get me home over 30 miles ... the kelty basically holds seasonal clothing, 3 days food, and a shelter whereas the 3v gear posse contains 1 day basic needs. I still use this system to this day and have one in each of my vehicles. The plan is, if I am less than 30 miles away, grab the 3v gear posse. If I am more than 30 miles away, stick the 3v gear posse into the kelty and hit the road (or you could transfer the equipment if you had time)
Thanks to yours videos I have several bug out bags for myself and family members and get home bags one of my favorites is the maxpedition fat boy I've had that for several years now and it's still going strong thanks for the videos
This video came just in time! I'm trying to put one together right now. I've been through a lot of setups, but the big GHB wasn't practical for me. I am from hungary and the towns here are close to each other, so it's not necessary to keep a large backpack in the car. A light bag is much more practical option in densely populated areas. Thanks for the great video.

Not a survival item but instant coffee and some honey are really nice to have. Great moral/energy booster and honey also has medicinal properties.

@@DrSchor Medical grade honey is sometimes used on wounds and burns. I use a conditioner in my beard that mostly honey during the winter it really helps my skin not get dried out.
Honey has anti oxidants I think.
I just started using honey in my coffee because of those small benefits.

When i first found your channel, i watched your video about the maxpedition versipacks. I bought a colossus and still have it.
You can fit a good amount of survival stuff in a gym bag, or school backpack if you use it regularly. I'd keep socks, basic tools or multi tool, fire starter and basic hiking gear, and you'll be good in most situations.
Sootch loves bags of good little things. Good little pliers… multi tools… matches… sharpies
I have a varied assortment of different bags and packs including the Proteus Versipack; Im not a huge fan of this particular bag because although it seems like it would have a large capacity, it doesn't open far wide enough to get all the essentials in there. I also have a Mystery Ranch Hip Monkey which is much more spacious, but it has one big compartment which allows too much wiggle room unless its stuffed full at which point it becomes quite heavy. I am currently about to try out a 25L Wolfpack Backpack as an EDC get home bag as I feel I can utilize the various compartments more effectively than the other aforementioned options without weighing it down. I plan to keep my edc pistol, knife, and a small toolkit inside (possibly my Wera Tool Check plus) and a small IFAK and hygiene items, as well as an olight, and possibly a change of clothes, and a fire kit. I keep a Maxpedition Falcon 3 in my car in a tote which has much more of an assortment, but its too heavy to carry around daily in and out of work and to the store etc.
Great video. This one has caused me a lot of head scratching. I used to keep my GHB in my Ford Explorer, but recently had to scrap it due to a bad timing chain. I bought a minivan, and the wife insists I not load it in the back with my "stuff" like the SUV. The GHB weights about 26lbs, and that includes 2-16oz bottles of water, and is rather bulky. I can't fit it into one of the stow-and-go compartments in the van floor because of this bulk, and really payed attention to this video for that reason. I laid all of the contents out and tried to get rid of items...it proved to be very difficult to reduce weight and bulk. Is 26lbs too heavy w/32oz of water, or is this a normal weight that you load?
I carry the 10c's of survival and removed the water, all food (trail mix), cooking stove, survival playing cards, and the extra 2 AA flashlights. The bulk seems to be due to keeping separate waterproof pouches for a fire kit, hand care (different gloves), foot care (socks, powder, moleskin, etc.), communications (emergency radio, batteries, USB adapters), water (Sawyer filter, silcock keys). I am a big fan of organization and reducing the bulk is causing a lot of painful decisions. Of all the survival channels out there, this one has given me the most useful information and a means to do a lot of soul searching.
I live in a very populated area in NJ, 9 miles east of NYC, and work about 7mi from home. I guess the GHB has to be tailored mostly for this commute, however, living here with the population and traffic, it doesn't take much to create a SHTF situation, so I am conflicted in assessing the severity/likelihood of certain situations.
Water, shoes, spare socks, spare underwear, flashlight, spare batteries, blanket, snacks, and self-defense.
It's just seven miles. If you're reasonably healthy, you can do that in a few hours. You don't *need* a huge list of survival gear, and if you're in a hostile urban environment having more gear is going to be worse than not having the gear.
My line of thinking is that I fully equip a 20L backpack as a get home bag. If I come to a time where I need the bag to get home and its too heavy, I'll leave behind some items in the truck according to the situation to travel lighter. In most cases, I'll be coming back to get my truck. If not, then no biggie. The items in my get home bag aren't the high end tools (but they are good enough to work).
the last thing you need in a desperate situation is a second rate tool that will fail when you need it most. high end tool last forever; they are an indispensable investment

@@DrSchor I don't have family (sadly). The reasoning behind my choice of equipment is that I'm considering a probable event where I need to get home, that's it. Not sustain myself for 72 hours, though the items in my pack can surely do so. My prep is more towards my truck breaking down or an earthquake cutting off roads (which I have lived through). My truck preps are quality though not the high end stuff say a good multitool but not a Leatherman, or a Sawyer mini not a GRAYL geopress. My home is where I invest my main preps since I tend to bug in than bug out.
Always remember that your bag must be customized to you and your situation. I live in AZ so 75% of my bag weight is water. I had to lose items to accommodate what was most important for me.
The back pack was originally created to be worn in the front. Seems legit to access the pockets quickly and effectively instead of taking pack off to access the contents.

Here in New England I change my load out by season. No sense in having a winter hats gloves etc in July or bug spray in January. Another tip If you don’t use the devices regularly that are battery powered store them without the batteries because they can corrode.
I also think that I much more likely scenario vs the get home/bug out shown in a lot of these types of videos is actually car trouble or road closure and being stuck with your vehicle for hours.
My bag is loaded out around this idea. Water, battery bank to charge phones, food protein bars etc, wet wipes, nips (yep!), cigar, a book to read. Pepper spray & seasonal clothing. I call it an “Oh $hit kit” I like to put them together and give them to family for their cars.
I like the small catch-all gear bags at Cabela’s. They are cheap, fairly well constructed, and less tacticool.
I have the Malaga and it is perfect for a lightweight go bag. I found the Remora to small to hold all of the essentials,
The BIGGEST PAIN with packs and gear is BOUNCING, it causes cuts, bruise's. From my days with ALICE to the latest gear. Velcro really helpful. Have a great day 👍

I can't even begin to tell you how many times i have tried to put together a go bag! Weight of the bag is a major concern for me. For my weekend trips, i created a tub and added a bag in the tub. This way my car stays neat and i know i have what I need. The fanny pack might be the way to go.? Any thoughts for women?

I have a small grayman EDC bag made by Hazard4; It's the Tonto Urban CCW Mini-Messenger. I've been using this as an all-hazards bag with a full IFAK/trauma insert, water filter, water bladder, CCW holster, OC spray, flashlight, pen/paper, emergency meds, TQ's, Israeli bandage, triangular bandage, emergency blanket, spare reading glasses and sunglasses in hard case, multitool, 10k MaH battery bank, bic lighter & tinder tabs, paracord, mini compass, and a handkerchief with a rope knots guide printed on it. It doesn't weigh too much, but the gun & spare mags are easily 1/2 the weight. In the event I can't get to my get-home bag and I'm less than 3 days' walking from home, I can just scoot.
Your requirements may be different, but you'll want to save weight just the same.

A "get home bag" doesn't have to be complicated! Not sure why people haven't looked deeper into pilot survival kits, then make adjustments for their needs/area. These kits SHOULD be small and light weight. Your only objective is to get home or to safety. You really don't need much. What I REALLY wish were available- U.S. made bags that are affordable!! THAT would be a game changer

I use Maxpedition bags for going to work and back riding my bike everyday. Between that and using my bag for shopping I get about three years out of a bag. Most other packs I've used last about six months. So I'll pay Maxpedition prices.

These are nice packs. That being said, if you want something built for mobility and jogging (i.e. Escape & Evade) get a pack made for ultramarathons.
Brawndo. agree. i am a runner and my UA running vest is so handy with pockets and catches which are easy to access while on the move/trail. The ard part is finding one in a more neutral color (tan, green, black, etc.) as most all are bright colors.

I’m about to have my 90 year old mom on a 400 mile trip, bringing her to my home. I realize I need to pack things for her not just for me… This should be interesting! I was supposed to stay with her for a month in her home, but the last thing I want to do is get stuck somewhere without all my preps.

Exotac makes extremely high quality gear but $35 for a ripspool? It’s $1 worth of duct tape, $1 worth of fishing line and a $1 sewing needle.

Nice video! Sensible Prepper fits you guys well, some people go over board with these. I know I get caught up with "gimmicks/gadgets". You really have to think about where you are (climate, city vs country etc.) to take what you need and can use. A signal mirror won't do you a lot of good in town unless you need to do your hair. Having a knife and saw in a wooded area is great, but in town while still a valuable tool can raise a few eyebrows with the Police, even if we're in a park, we can't be cutting anything up in Ohio! I think I'm going to separate those things that could be weapons and put them with tools, so maybe I won't get hauled away by the Cops. Thanks for the videos, maybe you can do a favorite or go to gadget video?
I'm also in Ohio, nobody's gonna think of a knife or saw as a weapon but maybe you're in a big city
I love my sling pack!! So accessible and convenient!
Also, maybe think about having a thin rain jacket and/or thermal insulating shirt/pants now that we are entering winter. My sling bag is slightly larger than these. I can fit a full change of clothes for just in case.

I ride city buses to get around my city since I don't drive but I choose to havemy gethoembag on my back in case I gotta abandon a bus or the buses are pulled off the streets
When are you going to do an updated bug out bag video?
I have found it fairly easy and also comfortable to wear a rucksack on your front And one on your back, put the back one on last so it helps to keep the front one snug. You could also do this as a DIY plate carrier as most 35ltr rucksacks will fit one in. If you keep the weight moderate in both and fairly balanced, moving and being Mobile isn't an issue.

I would add a couple whirlpak water bags. They pack small and weigh nothing
Watch content about ultra-lite backing. It helped me drop about 20 pounds from my pack. Pay attention to the Ten Essentials. It will help you survival. Tactical packs are heavier than hiking backpacks. Contrary to some controversy, thanks to current high tech materials used for backpacking equipment, these materials are not only light weight but durable as well.
I'm a hiker and I agree, people carry so much weight and unnecessary stuff, always wanting the tactical look is people's downfall.

Out of curiosity why did you choose a filter straw over a sawyer mini setup? Reason for the question: not much room for a water bottle i suppose you could collect water in the loksak, but the sawyer mini gives you a container to store the water that's lightweight and reusable. I personally like to have water on my person so in a 72 hour survival scenario you can fill it, chug refill and go. Even though its not necessary i do think i would find a way to add food. Most like open a datrex bar break some off and then vacuum seal it.
I think i would probably switch the handkerchiefs out for a shemagh as well. Same principle alot bigger but folds down relatively small

I might have missed it but I personally would throw in some moleskin it doesn't weigh much but if you're walking a bunch they can be worth it.
For starters, get rid of the 500D or 1000D fabric bags and pouches. They have no place in an ultralight setup.
I would throw an lighter or ferro rod in other places besides all in one kit.
If you loose that one kit you would loose all your fire makeing tools...

Honestly some of the gizmos in the pack might be handy but how are you going to carry water reliably or stay warm without a fire?? You don’t need 3 ferro rods this isn’t a bushcraft expedition. Fun video and good concept but poor execution
