- It finally happened! Join me for a chat with producer/guitarist/vocalist Alex Newport. Not only was he in one of my favorite bands of all time, Fudge Tunnel, but he was also one half of the legendary metal/industrial side project, Nailbomb. We discuss both of those as well as his current and primary profession, music production.

I was at Uni in Nottingham from '89-'93 and had the amazing good fortune to see Fudge Tunnel live 3 times.
A totally superb band, and I'm so glad Alex saw success afterwards.
I still regularly introduce people to Fudge Tunnel, and their primary response is 'Why haven't I heard of them before? Where were they hiding?'
earache have fcuked over so many bands from the 90s, fudge tunnel, pitch shifter, sleep, godflesh, OLD, napalm death, brutal truth, bolt thrower etc etc
Literally just got into FT and Nailbomb lol perfect timing!
Nice!!
a great example of how to mature with grace. Much Respect.
As a massive FT and Alex Newport fan, thank you so much for doing this and sharing it. He's obviously not a very public guy, and it's such a rare treat to hear directly from him on all the different phases of his career. Awesome interview!
Thank you!!
How did I miss this? hate songs was one of my first (and favorite) cds. Thank you for getting Alex to talk. A real hidden gem.
Alex Newport is so cool! Thanks you for taking the time to make this interview. 🤘
As a spotty misfit teenager was lucky to see Fudge Tunnel a few times in 89-91 I think -- headlining in the Venue in New Cross, London, nearwhere I grew up, supporting Fugazi IIRC and others... had the t-shirt (how to kill)... still have the EP The Sweet Sound of Excess and LP Hate Songs on vinyl. I remember once writing to them and Alex really kindly sent me a mixtape with Fudge Tunnel demos (which I've since lost, sadly).
For all the noise and death imagery, they were the loveliest people, and I remember the gigs being funny, friendly and great -- they were a tight band. Thanks a million for sharing this... takes me back... and great to see Alex doing well.
Your reasons for being drawn to Fudge Tunnel are exactly the same as mine - straddling the metal and alternative worlds, but not feeling part of either. That was me in the 90s (sounds like we're around the same age). FT were/are one of the most important bands for me, and I've followed Alex's music ever since. I used to run a fan site some years back and had some back and forth with Alex. Lovely guy. Interestingly, I've seen a few interviews with him over the last few years and no one asks him about Son of Crackpipe...Great interview, matey!
THANK YOU FOR THIS!! I’m a HUGE Fudge Tunnel and Nailbomb fan!! I saw FT w/ Sepultura and clutch in the 90’s. Alex rules. He used to married to a friend of mine too. 🤘
I’ve been a huge fudge tunnel fan since fudgecake and hate songs. Saw them live a bunch of times and talked to Alex online a few times. Oh you’re right Alex is 100 percent wearing a Nailbomb T shirt in the low budget ‘Grey’ video shot in the old monastery or castle or whatever it is. 👍🏻
Fudge Tunnels rules!!!
Yayyyyy!!! You did it!!!!
Well done Old Head, looking forward to watching this
6:13 first time I ever heard fudge tunnel was on john peel :) he was the only dj who played them, I don't even think tommy vance played them on the friday rock show but I may be wrong
Exactly the same as me. After the Friday rock show one Friday the first song John peel blasted out was a FT song. I used to have it on cassette years back but can’t remember for the life of me the song title!
@@Goldie1977 haha... ironically I think I found more heavy gutar bands through peel , than the rock show
btw there's a band-searchable john peel wiki online with tracklists, seems like he started one of his shows with Suffering Makes Great Stories? could be the one you mean
-edit, although that was from a 1994 show and Friday Rock Show ended in 1993 so maybe not... another Peel show from '91 had Bed Crumbs as the 2nd track played
Nailbomb rules✊🏻✊🏻✊🏻
Alex is a legend. Fudge Tunnel, Nailbomb and Theory Of Ruin are all undeniably heavy. Good to hear from Alex I'm 2023. In the early 90's he was ever present in my music collection. For anyone interested in his influence today, Conan is about to drop a cover of Hate Songs. Can't wait to hear how heavy it comes out.
Great interview from a fellow Old Head!
That is awesome about Conan,, saw them last year with the Fudge bassist!
Hey Oldhead this is Useless off Amp, Amazing interview. I was just sent the link for it from my friend back home who got me onto Fudge tunnel in the early 90s . Massive respect for Getting this interview, it’s so great to see Alex talk about this stuff . Huge respect

Nailbomb!🔥
I swore I read that he had died . Glad to see he’s not. Great musician
Alex Newport: ‘You know…’
Us: ‘No, we don’t, that’s why we’re asking…’
Any news on the Nailbomb T in the Grey video ?!
It’s true he is wearing a Nailbomb shirt in the low budget video of Grey shot outside in a monastery. 👍🏻
