Apparently it is true: Necessity is the mother (or father) of invention. Good idea & another good job. I would not have thought of that, but then, I haven't had much need for mortising. Never lose your imagination.
This press has worked like a charm for my projects ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with. This was an excellent purchase for $40!!
The square bit surrounding the drill is just a chisel. It needs to be forced down through the wood. The drill bit inside is there to remove the central bit of the wood but also the corners that the square bit cuts away. The orange bit holds the square bit and allows the force from the arbour to transfer to the square bit without spinning it. If you didn't have it then the chuck would push on the square bit and rub like a b*stars while trying to spin it like a drill bit. It would make a terrible round hole, not a square one.
nice projects and a lot less in price than the cast iron ones they sell which can be $$$$$, however, I found it for $ 32 and free ship and the same one goes from $45 up to $80 with other gangster sellers but I would be proud with a home built one more than a purchased one and yes orange looks great just like the brand Poney C clamps
Dont fall for old obsession with clean ,polished, or repainted tools. Just clean them oil or wax them. A collection of old well used tools is far more desirable than pile or new shiny looking painted ones.
I could afford a mortising machine, but as a penny-pincher I'm in awe of your solution! Great job, and I'll be looking at your other projects.

I had seen the wooden one, a toy..... Yours is really a great idea, thanks
Australian exhaust clamp!😊. Another great idea from you Sir Jay!!! My compliments!
I like the way you got it accomplished. A little thinking and voila! its done.
very simple and practical! nice job!
Very clever! You never cease to amaze. And Beethoven's music at the end! Schoen!
Excellent work, Info. You should have also clamped down the work securely, you always need some kind of lube when performing this operation.
That is a beautiful car you have there
Ingenious
Why do you need that orange piece?
