  • We are starting off our morning out in the garden to get some tomato maintenance done, as well as picking some green beans and other veggies that are ready to harvest. Then in the kitchen we are frying up some fresh potato chips with our recently harvested potatoes, as well as some fresh cucuzzi gourd, and some homemade smashed burgers.

I enjoy watching your gardens grow. Always lots to harvest. I don’t know if you’ve ever watched “The Veggie Boys” but their farming methods grow a lot of produce. For eg: you and almost everyone I watch seem to think tomatoes need to be all trellised up and pruned all the time. The veggie boys leave them to fall and grow where ever, ignoring them really, and they produce an abundance of fruit, and have very little if any disease.

I was watching ur video in May 2023 about ur mention of pickled eggs. I’ve grew up eating them and always make them as my Dad’s mother made - w/canned beets + the can’s beet juice. The heated vinegar, beets, beet juice, onion slices and herbs dye the eggs purple red - beautiful! Beets are super yummy w/the eggs. I’m sure you could purée fresh beets for juice and use thin sliced fresh beets. Hope u’ll give it a try! 😊

Here in zone 6a in a mountain desert climate, we prune only for airflow because by the time the tomatoes start producing, it's pretty close to our first frost date. Someday I will get a high tunnel and we'll have a longer season, but until then, it makes no sense to prune off productive vines. It's fun to see how different gardening techniques work for different climates!
Ooh, I have some zucchini that will be ready by next week, and I have so many recipes I'm waiting to make. Looking forward to garden produce that you haven't had for a year is one of my favorite parts of gardening.

Sprinkle with toasted sunflower seeds, and dig in. The first time someone made it for me, I'm like what in the world? And then when the pickled beet juice mixes with the cottage cheese, the cheese turns beet colored lol. But it's so good.

Since right now is your very busy time of year and you understandably don't have as much time for vlogging I have been watching some of your older ones
Some I've seen, some I haven't. Enjoying all. It's really fun to watch the ones shot in California and your cross country travels when searching for your new home. Recommend it for everyone.
I remember when I got some snake bean seeds. There were only 5 seeds per pack so I got 2 packs. The seed company I got them from always had new and interesting seeds but I noticed they seem to have lower germination then any other seed company. Because these were "exotic" seeds I think the company should provide more specific directions and growing tips because of different farming practices and conditions.
Wow, that was quite a bunny trail.
Anyway, you were talking about how smelly your kakuzi squash was which reminded me of those snake beans. Out of the 10 I planted 3 germinated and one withered away shortly thereafter. This bean originated in a more tropical region than I live in and I planted in a section of my front garden/flower bed. The vines attached to the house as if glued on. They only produced 1 bean on each plant. When I finally picked them(the biggest being around 3 1/2 feet long and very gnarly I couldn't help but notice the distinctive skunk like smell and the feel of sticky/chalky residue of the bean which left my hands with a slight skunk smell.
Not being as adventurous as your family, I wasn't about to cook it up. I did try to find someone who was willing to cook it up and sample with no takers. One even cited a fear that they would have to possibly throw out the pan it was cooked in.
Kudos to you for trying it.
Instead of battering up like zucchini, have you ever considered frying like potato chips? Would be quick if you had an adjustable mandolin. Or perhaps slice up then ferment for a couple weeks and have what might taste like salt and vinegar chips.

I watched a video of a guy that made smashed tacos. The hamburger was seasoned with the taco dry ingredients and he made, I think, 3 or 4 oz balls from that mix. He put the balls on the griddle and topped them with an 8" tortilla and smashed the ball flat. When the meat was browned on one side he flipped them and added cheese and the tortilla got toasted and melted the cheese. He then added the tomatoes, diced onions, lettuce, and topped it with sour cream, and folded the whole thing in half. A smashed taco! I am going to try them myself!

I tried a similar experiment a couple of years ago- between a heavy prune like you seem to have in the tunnel and then a no prune.
The heavy prune for me provided tomatoes earlier, but fewer overall, the no prune provided more and for longer, right until the first really cold nights(October in Northern Ireland).
Since then I go to a halfway prune removing the lower leaves and clearing certain side growths to allow for better air flow, and only heavy prune one or two plants to allow for an earlier harvest

Speaking of seed potatoes! In your last video you pulled reds that you said at least one potato in each plant was rotten. I grow a red variety called red lasoda and every year each plant has 1 rotten potato.. The original seed potato. For some reason that variety rots slower in the ground so the seed potato is always left behind when I dig them up. I'm not sure what the white spots would be but the mushy ones I bet were the original seed potato. They are also always consistantly massive reds! we seek that variety every year.

Ben, perhaps you could use a 'rubber stamp pressure tool' on your burger press? This is a crafting tool used to add pressure to rubber stamps in card making and scrapbooking. They're about the right size and have a rubber gasket on the bottom so they don't slip. It could store separately in the drawer to eliminate the need for a handle on the press. Just a thought! ☺

You can also eat the young leaves from the cucuzza plant. Look up Cucuzza Tenerumi. We grow them every year and freeze the Tenerumi for winter. So good!!

Hello Ben, you could make a hinged handle to fold it so it doesn't take up as much space in your drawer.

It was -MINUS 56 Fahrenheit here one day this winter. Im the fall I had covered my minuscule potato plot wth about a foot of old leaves and then a lite tarp. When planting this May I found a nice sized PERFECT potato in the ground. I ate it. It was perfectly fine. I am thinking of deliberately leaving a some potatoes in the ground this year and see if i can do that again!

Any of you empty beds you could put in black eye peas or pink eyed peas. FIELD peas of some type. You can eat the peas then turn in the tops as compost. Also peas would be a nitrogen fixer for the soil.
