Winlink is also good for sending SMS \ TEXT messages. Need to update others that are in route to join you at a remote location? A text message before they loose cell service gets their attention. Even if it is a reminder for them to pull over and check their email. I have always used Winmor. Time to try something different. Thanks for the video.

@@HamRadioAdventures Yes and thank you for the time you spend with all the Icom radios and help you give. I think it is great.
My local winlink Elmer, sugested I use Vara which I have and have paid to register as he recommended. I'm trying to not have to buy something else, but if you suggest I look into ardop, I'll do it.
Thanks again for all you do for Amateur Radio and Icom radios!

Is there a native version that runs on Mac OS or is there an alternative program that works on Mac OS that does the same thing? In other words, non-Windoze environment.

Soundcard modes, all of them, you set rig power to 100W (or whatever the rig's max level is), you adjust your TX power with your audio drive, the soundcard level out to the rig, either in the software you are using or using Windows soundcard levels. Ideally the software allows the adjustment and you just leave the soundcard levels all at 100%. With the Icoms, you use the USB levels in the menus if using the built-in soundcards.
Into a dummy load, set the software audio level to 100%, set Windows soundcard levels to 100%, and adjust the Icom levels until there is max out with ZERO ALC, if you can't at Icom menu level 1, then drop the Windows soundcard level. From there you just drop the software or Windows soundcard levels until the desired output level is reached...with ZERO ALC showing.
Always set the rig to max power out, always adjust TX power by the soundcard levels or you lose linearity in your signal. There should be ZERO ALC, zero. You should, on a 100W rig be able to send a tune signal and get 100W out with ZERO ALC.
ALC is compression, these are digital modes, you do not want any compression on the signal or it alters the ability to decode your signal sent and when you get into any level of indicated ALC it will make a dirty, splattering signal with lousy IMD.
Never drop TX power on the rig, just like loading a linear, you load up for max output and then back off the drive level for desired output power, with soundcard modes the drive level is the soundcard audio output into the rig.

Just be careful because if you email non-hams, they may not be aware that their responses are not private. Also, WinLink servers have been storing copies of messages sent/received through them.

lol, I remember back in 82, a husband and wife took their tech, they were on a local repeater that had the phone patch. The husband calls his wife at home from his can on vhf. she picks up and starts talking about how she needed him home soon, and went on about acting out things in the bedroom. lol. The next day they found out everyone was listening lol. Never heard them again.

you can send to anyone with a valid email address, and anyone can send to you using the email address you associate with your Winlink account. As others have already mentioned, all Winlink traffic is viewable by anyone who wishes to look for it.
A less-often mentioned caveat is that since Winlink is an Amateur Radio network, all rules & regulations about what types of messages are allowed / appropriate apply to Winlink traffic.

I’m not really interested in sending mail on HF. Is it possible to use that software two have keyboard to keyboard QSOs with this ARQ mode? How fast is the dAtA speed in terms of words per minute?
I used to use AMTOR ARQ decades ago. AMTOR ARQ was drastically more robust than PSK31, RTTY, or CW. Unfortunately, AMTOR is no longer heard on HF today. No one seems to use PACTOR 1, and the other faster PACTOR modes requires a SCS modem costing about $1,500 or more. It would be great if there was an ARQ mode that would work using simple sound card interface software.

@@HamRadioAdventures Hello again my winlink elmer, couple questions, Unless I select busy detect as 0, every channel shows busy (even with radio off). Also what is the difference between center freq. and dial freq ? which freq should radio be set for ?..sorry I'm just starting out on digital modes. When I try start a session the radio transmits about 8 or so times for a few seconds then I get the failure to connect. I can hear my radio on an SDR online, so I know I am transmitting the "tones"..Thanks again, Hope all is well with you and your family !
