    This thing still has better control of forward, slow, and reverse speeds than BluRay or DVD, and that technology is over 30 years old !!

    • @WOSArchives
      @WOSArchives 10 років тому +4

      Of coarse this is depending on the disc. Discs on the CLV format (or extended play as the powers to be referred it back then) had play, only one speed fast forward and reverse, and no freeze frame. CAV discs have all those features. I think only 1 demo disc explains this, and it was for an industrial player.

    Well, those formats make those restrictions possible- laserdiscs never had any way of blocking player controls. It annoys me when I can't skip past trailers or FBI warnings, and I actually WATCH those willingly on first viewing so I can only imagine how much it annoys other people. There's been a few movies I haven't even seen because I was put off by forced trailers for them on other discs (the Madagascar trailer on Shrek 2 in particular!)

      If you like standard definition that is less than DVD.

    • @Earthtime3978
      @Earthtime3978 10 років тому +2

      clemsonbloke "Standard definition" is a term typically applied to television resolution. As to dvds, they can display a nice picture with increased detail, but if you have a lack of knowledge about laserdisc, you wouldn't know about the smooth film-like image a good transfer can have. Also, the sound on a Dolby Digital or DTS laserdisc would rock your house and put many dvds to shame.

    • @clemsonbloke
      @clemsonbloke 10 років тому +1

      AJ Steele I wouldn't say that Laserdisc had a smooth film like image but rather a soft video style picture that doesn't resolve fine lines correctly without noise. For one it cannot reproduce a picture at 24 fps, its still 30 fps. Blu Ray can and does have a film like image, it plays back at 24 fps. As to the audio, Dolby Digital (called AC-3 on LD) and DTS are the same whether its DVD, Blu Ray, or Laserdisc. In other words digital is digital, its all compressed on all formats the same way. The analog audio on laserdisc though is uncompressed and has a wider dynamic range. I'll give you that much.

    • @clemsonbloke
      @clemsonbloke 10 років тому

      AJ Steele Oh and I do own a laserdisc player, in no way does the laserdisc picture stack up to DVD or Blu Ray, not by a longshot. I have several THX releases too and those are supposed to be top picture and sound, still can't touch the other formats. I do like the jacket art and the collectability and nostalgia of laserdisc but the quality just can't stack up to the more modern formats. The prices, while low, are still too high for what you get picture quality wise. When you think about it you see LD's for like $3-4 on ebay but by the time you pay shipping you could have had the DVD and in many times the Blu Ray as Blu Ray prices keep dropping. For me nothing looks as great as Blu Ray in 1080p at 24 FPS.

    There were a couple generations of these. The first one ( this one?) was full, and I mean full, of 4558 8-pin opamps! These are analog electronics. I noticed that throughout how many analog components were in the player. Couldn't understand why. Of course I was thrilled as an electronics hobbyist to have a goldmine of parts from a busted up laser player. I wasn't about to try to repair it since it had been messed with already, but tried anyway. lol

    I own the Pioneer laserdisc / dvd combo unit bought it at a yard sale. Would be cool to find an early unit like this. I found the style they used in the schools that was massive and heavy. Would be really cool to hit a goodwill or sale that someone has a library of japenese import horror movies.... usualy when i find movies they are dull 80s 90s pop culture stuff. Avoid the Sony units though they always have issues. I don't think Olivia Newton John really benefited from LD tech. The only movie they showed that would be better on LD was Alien.

    I wish the presenter of this video finished it all off with some timeless honesty and inserted the following dialogue... and so when the Magnavox machine itself becomes redundant technology you won't be able to play those superb shiny disks you've been collecting, instead why not shoot them all with an air-gun at a party, invite some friends... or perhaps they could make a fetching hat or a scary mirror-box for your family pet, or simply skim them off a cliff into the sea for ever... whether it's play one or play one-million... it'll smash like a good'un right into that wall there.. go on son hit it... fling the mofo.... give us it 'ere... WHIP... SMOOOOOOSHHHHH... give us the poseidon-adventure quick... WHIP... SMOOOOOOOOOOSHHHH, lovely... lets ave another... give us planet of the apes.... fanku..... WHIP...

    That came with the next generation- LASERDISC I think, this is laservision. BTW for people who think you are asking a foolish question since they didn't have wide screen TV's then, many of us would prefer the black bars on the top and bottom of a screen to play an original wide screen movie. Since the laser disc was a permanent medium then it would be prepared for new mediums. Of course the videotape was the standard.
    Laservision did have a rather analog quality to it. It used analog components
