Steller's Jay Imitating Something

Steller's Jays are known to mimic a variety of other animals, sometimes for utility, and sometimes just for fun. I don't know what exactly these Steller's Jays are imitating---it almost sounds like some sort of cat! I also don't know why they are doing it.
This was recorded close to Skalkaho Falls in the Sapphire Range of Montana. The camera work was a little uncertain, but it is clear to see and hear that these are Steller's Jays.

I have a dozen or so Steller's jays living around my house. I often hear them making a call that sounds like a red-tailed hawk.
