I've been watching these videos for quite a while and always think I should jump in and do it too - the videos are so easy to understand!
When I took a class, instructor suggested making a bunch of practice squares that are 18x18" squares made out of muslin & batting to practice on. They are easy to mark grids on to practice.

I love Westalee templates. I took a class at my local sewing store and have 4-5 sets.
When I don't have a quilt to work on, I make 18x18" sandwich pieces to play wuth my rulers.
The initial purchase of templates is nothing compared to the price of paying someone else to quilt it on a long arm.
