Laettner best college player ever. he beat Shaq, the Fab 5, an undefeated UNLV team that had Augmon, Anthony and Johnson, GTown that had Mourning and Mutumbo. 2 Titles, 4 final four appearances at the peak of College Basketball.
Went 4-0 in regional final games and in those games hit 31-of-34 from the field (91%) and 34-of-37 from the line (92%) with two buzzer-beating game-winning shots. Laettner was clutch at a different level than everyone else.

I thought Kentucky had the game won lol, I wanted Duke to lose so bad. This era was the best in my opinion, a time when young men wasn't soft. Mashburn was a amazing player, clutch shot by C.L!!!
Many who watch this will not remember… But in 1988…our Kentucky Wildcat Basketball program was nearly KILLED by the NCAA for violations that, today, would get a “hand slap” by that weak body. We were left for dead as most of our players abandoned our program except for four Kentucky home boys… Rick Pitino took the pieces of our program and served the years of restrictions placed on us… while teaching our Kentucky kids how to play a phenomenal up-tempo-pressure style not yet seen in the NCAA. Kentucky fans watched each year as Jamal Mashburn joined the team and we kept getting better and better …. THIS was the year we were finally off probation and released into the national spotlight! Duke was king and crowned the NCAA champion in all the national pundits minds before this tournament or game was ever played. When Kentucky finally crossed paths with Duke in the final 8…. it seemed like nobody in the nation had any respect for us… nor truly KNEW what our style of basketball was all about! You watch the first few minutes of this game, and the two HUGE runs our CATS went on to climb back from deficits, and you will see how Pitino’s style was so effective and hard to prepare for and told the nation… Kentucky Basketball is BACK… get used to it! Best Basketball game I ever saw played and hats off to both teams and coaches!

What gets lost in Laettner making the buzzer shot is that he scored 31 points and did not miss one shot the entire game. He was 10-10 from the floor including one 3 pt shot and made all 10 FT. Maybe the greatest tourney performance ever !!
@@DanielSong39 An argument can be made that he should have been ejected (I don't think he should have), but most people don't realize that he did it in retaliation to being shoved hard at 1:00:10. Laettner shouldn't have stomped the guy (wasn't even the guy who shoved him), but it's not like he did it for no reason at all.
At 8 years old I didn’t realize that this meant Kentucky basketball was back and would only get better. I was to busy crying. Only time I ever saw my dad turn the tv off immediately, go to his bedroom, lock the door and didn’t see him until he got home from work the next day. It hurt me and my dad, but imagine being one of those Kentucky kids nobody wanted.

I also remember being on my knees in the living room when he hit that shot. That shot just snatched the souls of every cats fan around the world. Arguably the best college game ever.
What makes this one of the greatest buzzer beaters ever is that there was exactly .2 seconds left when Laettner let fly. He literally shot it at the last possible moment - one heartbeat later and the shot would not have counted.
Some key takeaways as a neutral observer. Kentucky seemed to be on the wrong end a lot of dubious reach in foul calls. Hurley made clutch three after clutch three. Both teams were very mentally tough, they kept responding when momentum seemed to shift. Given the stakes, the back and forth nature of the game, the dramatic finish, I can see why many say this is the greatest bball game of all time
One of the best college basketball 🏀 games of all time. I remember watching that game, and just freaking out when Hill made the 1/2 court pitch to Chris winning the game.. Still brings tears 😢 of joy to my eyes. This was Basketball 🏀
Let’s Go Duke! Legendary! My man Christian Laettner, was 100% from the floor and free throw line and that is hard to even fathom in 2020! So glad we won this game over Ky!

@@sickofguysnamedtodd2293 That's the funny thing I'm a huge DUKE fan and I honestly dont care or even think of 98. Most fans dont. 92 was "The Shot". And probably the most iconic shot in NCAA basketball history.
Grant Hill had to make the perfect pass for that last-second play to work and he did. He threw it more than 3/4 the length of the court high enough so that it could not be intercepted but just within Laettner's reach. Pitino's choice to play 5 on 4 defense and not put anyone in front of Hill was one of the worst decisions he ever made.
@@TheJ-manT800 I guess you are referring to Mashburn. I don't know if he was Kentucky's best defensive player, but that doesn't matter. Pitino could have put anyone in front of Hill jumping up and down and waving his arms. That would have been enough to get his throw off the mark. If Laettner had to chase after the ball time would have run out.
I didn’t like Duke or Laettner during there hey-day, but have come to appreciate their accomplishments more in retrospect. Laettner was probably the greatest College Basketball player of all-time. I became more a fan of his in the pro’s. He seemed more relatable as a pro and was hoping he would do better as a pro.
Rick Pitino may be very controversial but he is one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time, from his fling with Providence, to his remaking of a dynasty at Kentucky, to his rebuild in Louisville. And if you want to talk about controversial, let’s talk about John Calipari.
Great game but dwarfed usually by Duke's return to the Final Four and a National Championship. BUT - a better story is that Kentucky senior class known as “The Unforgettables”: John Pelphrey, Sean Woods, Deron Feldhaus and Richie Farmer. ... which did have it's own documentary (just not One Shining Moment) --- narrated by Ashley Judd ( great commit ) all 4 have their jerseys retired and hanging in Rupp Arena - a decision by AD CM Newton - attesting to their amazing resurrection of Kentucky basketball ... a triumph of their love of the school.
I was a senior in high school. I watched this game at a church in Western Kentucky during youth group meeting. When Sean Woods hit that last shot, everyone took off running to celebrate. I stayed in the room and finished watching the game. I couldn't believe my eyes when Laettner hit that shot. I had to go break the news to everyone else who had left in celebration. They thought I was messing with them until they came back to see for themselves.
Because your heart was in it. Just like myself. I was at the ceremony in Rupp when they hung Woods, Pelphry, Farmer and Feldhouse's jerseys in the rafters as the Unforgettable's. I'm still upset they didn't include Mashburn's jersey in the ceremony. Even though he was a freshman? He deserved his to be hanging there with the others.
"No team has repeated as NCAA champions since UCLA did it in 1973." The only team to do it since Duke was the Florida Gators in 2006 and 2007. That's how hard it is to pull off.
I hear you my man. And I was a Kentucky fan since Rex Chapman. I remember watching this game in a small dive bar in South Jersey with my friends that afternoon. And I recall one of my pals saying with still plenty of time left, this is the best game ever. Every shot that went in sounded like a game winner. That was kinda amplified by being played in that Spectrum shoebox.
Watched it live at my Aunts house as a 16yr old DIE HARD U.K. fan born and raised in Kentucky when Laettner hit the shot I kicked at the T.V. and when out in my Aunts front yard pulled my shirt over my head (because all my friends and family were over there and I didn't want em 2c) and cried. Mainly because Laettner should have not even been in the game after what he done to Woods
After the buzzer went off ending the game Mike Krzyzewski stayed on the court hugging and talking to the Kentucky players. Rick Pitino ran off the court as fast as he could. True sportsmanship always shows itself.
Not true. Pitino stayed on the court for nearly a minute, which can feel like an hour when you'v lost a game with this kind of a gut punch bad beat. What was he supposed to do? Linger there and soak it all in? The court belongs to the winners. Did Mike K. hang around and swap hugs with every Lehigh player when they upset Duke in the tournament? Pitino ceded the court to the victors, and walked away very calmly.
At the time I wasn’t a fan of Duke, so I wasn’t super excited about this game because Duke won. However, in retrospect this was probably the greatest NCAA basketball tournament game ever and Laettners performance was the best ever in the NCAA tournament. it was also incredibly exciting with both teams playing like true champs! So many great moments and great plays...
Rules are the clock starts when it touches a player which means with 2.1 seconds left Laettner touch the ball jumping up to get it but time didn't start until he came down with the ball.
I remember not only seeing this game but watching an ESPN documentary a few years ago about the Laettner game, but I haven't been able to find it since. Ring any bells with anyone?
I don't know if this is the greatest college basketball game ever played? I haven't seen them all. But it's the greatest college basketball game I ever saw played! Boy, could the legendary voice of Kentucky Wildcat basketball, the late, great Cawood Ledford, have had a more incredible game to end his 39 seasons as the voice of Kentucky Wildcat basketball with. Truly a heavy weight fight of epic proportions where both fighters refused to quit and neither side's corner man was about the throw the towel. Fair to say, at least in my opinion, both teams gave back just as good as they got the entire game. One of the few times I can ever remember a Duke vs. Kentucky game ending with both teams leaving the floor with a whole lot of respect for one another.
Last great year of Ky basketball where they played as a team. Especially considering most of the players would've never played at UK if they hadn't been placed on probation.
I don't think Duke would be getting nearly as much criticism had the referee given Greg Anthony the three point play to ice the game in '91 and tossed Laettner in this game in '92 Then again this was the first of many, there was the infamous game against Maryland in 2001, the Baylor game in 2010, and the out of bounds call against Wisconsin in 2015
Indiana Hoosier fan here. Harder now days to be one. I will have to say, that I can’t stand either Duke nor Kentucky but I have to admit that this was and IMHO still is the greatest 45 minutes of basketball ever played. The determination of players on both teams was incredible. The coaching was phenomenal. Laetner’s ability to play within his skill set and excel and win games puts him in the Top 5 all-time college greats. I say this as I’m about to puke 😂
Oh i remember this game like it was yesterday..i was a sophomore in high school, staying overnight at my best friend's house..she cried, i sat there in shock...great game..Kentucky got a lot of bad calls..and thats not me saying stuff cause im a Kentucky wildcats basketball fan..thats been said by alot of ppl..either way one of the best basketball games in history
And a week later, referee Ted Valentine would make sure that Duke beat Indiana. IU's 3 best players fouled out. Ted hated Bob Knight and years later talked about how he was proud to be a part of why Knight never got his 4th ring. Just watch the 2nd half of the game...it's obvious. Sad but true.
I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT LAETTNER STEPPED ON TIMBERLAKE'S CHEST AND DIDN'T GET EJECTED. HE SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOOT THAT SHOT. I WILL NEVER EVER FORGET THIS GAME. AWESOME
Laettner was perfect on offense that night, 10 for 10 from the field with a single 3-pointer and 10 for 10 from the line for a total of 31. On defense, he was less than perfect letting Sean Woods get that shot off over him to put Kentucky up by a point with just 2.1 seconds on the clock. If Laettner had not come back to make the game-winning shot his perfect performance on offense would be forgotten and he would be remembered only as the player who lost the game for Duke. That's the way people think.
Finding these game and watching them is like hunting for treasure. This brings back so many good memories!

"No team has repeated as NCAA champions since UCLA did it in 1973."
The only team to do it since Duke was the Florida Gators in 2006 and 2007. That's how hard it is to pull off.
Now THAT was a game! Whew....!
Man I had totally forgotten that Cherokee Parks was in this game. And I went to Duke. Marty Clark too.
Best game and ending of all time, college or pro.
1:38:56 lady re-breaks lady’s neck 😆
I think that was Laettner's mother and sister.
@@freakystyley4000 You're right.
Lets go Duke! Still the best game ever played imo
Simply, the greatest college basketball game......ever! FYI, I'm a UK fan and even though we lost? I still believe this.
Greatest game in sports history. The greatest sporting accomplishment happened at the 1973 Belmont.
Laetner didn’t miss a shot in this game
Two big moments in sports occurred in 1992 were the Duke victory over Kentucky, and my Braves defeating the Pirates to win Game 7 NLCS 1992.
Imagine watching your kid have possible the greatest game in ncaa tourney history WITH A BROKEN FREAKIN NECK! Shoutout to Kurt angle lol
Me my brother and dad watch this to honest best basketball game I ever seen
Last great year of Ky basketball where they played as a team. Especially considering most of the players would've never played at UK if they hadn't been placed on probation.
Token Black who Idolized Laettner when he was a child in the early 90's
College Basketball was so fun to watch back then. Now it’s so hard to watch. The games are as fun to watch either.
For me it died off after the Villanova and NCU national championship game.
I don't think Duke would be getting nearly as much criticism had the referee given Greg Anthony the three point play to ice the game in '91 and tossed Laettner in this game in '92
Then again this was the first of many, there was the infamous game against Maryland in 2001, the Baylor game in 2010, and the out of bounds call against Wisconsin in 2015
Indiana Hoosier fan here.
Wow. "Tv" Teddy valentine. That clown again. The name says it all
Happy 31st anniversary to the greatest college basketball game ever player Go Duke.
Best NCAA Tournament game ever played. And everybody knows it.
I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT LAETTNER STEPPED ON TIMBERLAKE'S CHEST AND DIDN'T GET EJECTED. HE SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOOT THAT SHOT. I WILL NEVER EVER FORGET THIS GAME. AWESOME
Can’t play better than Laettner did in this game! 8/8 FG’s 2/2 from 3 and 10/10 from the line!
1:00:11 - Deron Feldhaus pushed Laettner in the back. This is what preceded to the stomp Timberlake.
greatest tourney game ever
Lattener not missing a shot the entire game makes it more incredible that the Kentucky team basically left him alone at the end!!!
Duke got every little call to go their way like usual
Oh wahhhh, you wish you could be a thousandth as good as laettner.
1:02:56 The Laettner foot on the chest moment that could have changed this entire game had he been ejected.... as it was, it did shift momentum.
Shocktor I know dude that’s why Duke is trash
Football Legends wait enlighten me on who won
Yoshir0cks You should not of won you trash Cheaters
Jesus loves you all❤️, allow him into your hearts.
@@marvinpetion1814 it was the early 90s. You don't get tossed unless you're in a full out brawl, and today Timberlake gets a T too for taunting
Well it was good defense still, just a good crazy shot
"Those neck braces are funny, yeah you just see someone in those and you start laughing" --Seinfeld
1:02:55. The stomp
I would like to see the Villanova/North Carolina National Championship Game of 2016 be uploaded
Take a look at KY #34 in the last second. He stays still watching Laettner instead of stepping up and attempting a block. I couldn't believe it.
'Stomper' shouldnt have been allowed to play ... No one today would get away w it! but that is duke
Verne Lundquist great 👍 broadcast of the game
Best game of my childhood
i remember antonio lang is the one of the best import of redbull in Philippines Basketball Association in the early 2000
Best game ever in basketball period. Leather was the best basketball player ever in college....
