Noodler's Bad Belted Kingfisher. Used it to make a pen and ink drawing of the TARDIS as a christmas present for my sister. It's a better than 95% match for Pantone 2955c, the official blue of the TARDIS, and the closest I've found in a fountain pen ink. I also found Noodler's Navy to be surprisingly elegant for a relatively basic shade of blue.
+waffle911 Yeah that ink is very close to TARDIS, good eye! I wonder if there's a site out there that matches fountain pen ink to famous colors out there... - Colin
+The Goulet Pen Company I once came across a site (can't remember what it was and can't find it again) that attempted to match inks to digital color values and I think to Pantone colors as well, but the matches weren't even close to accurate and the selection was quite limited. Your Swab Shop sample cards would be a prime catalogue to use to compare to a Pantone color book to get accurate matches. Perbang.dk is a site with a color calculator which has RGB values for Pantone color codes and can find close matches to other colors. RGB.to is another site I found only recently that seems to have a more complete and slightly more accurate Pantone conversion system, though. That's how I found Bad Belted King Fisher was so close to TARDIS blue, I used the RGB value of 2955c as a reference and took averaged samples from the the swabs on your website using Mac's DigitalColor Meter utility and looked for numerically close matches, then put them into Perbang.dk to calculate how close they were. I'm sure there must be corporate executives who would love to have fountain ink in their company's color for signing documents and such, as well as college alumni who would love to have ink that matches the colors of their alma mater. Noodler's Purple Martin is a very close digital match (according to your swab shop image) to Pantone 268, TCU's own Horned Frog Purple; and De Atramentis Ocher Yellow is the closest match to Pantone 159, the current Burnt Orange of University of Texas at Austin. Pantone 208, Virginia Tech's "Chicago Maroon," is harder to pin down. While Private Reserve "Fiesta Red," De Atramentis "Oriental Red," Diamine "Red Dragon," and Noodler's "Tiananmen" all come pretty close digitally, all are slightly off in different aspects of the color, generally brighter and more vibrant; but you'd probably be hard pressed to tell the difference when written on paper without a direct reference for comparison. Maybe grab a printed VT brochure to compare to, and find which one is closest.
My top 10 (today): 1. Pilot Iroshizuku Kon peki 2. Monteverde Horizon Blue 3. Private Reserve American Blue 4. Noodlers Baystate Blue 5. Pilot Iroshizuku Asa gao 6. Organic Studios Nitrogen 7. Sailor Manyo Haha 8. Troublemaker Simoun 9. Pilot Iroshizuku Shin Kai 10. Sailor Manyo Konagi
Sarasso sea is my favourite blue ink. Perfect rich saturation, dark but not too dark, purer blue colour, little bit of sheen but no so that it is overwhelming or smeary.
@@Gouletpens Any recommendations for something with the same sort of colour and sheen of Sargasso Sea but with a little faster drying/better behaviour?
I've recently returned to Waterman Serenity (Florida) Blue. It's a locely bright blue when applies lightly and a deep blue when applied heavily and even has a bit of red sheen when applied very heavily.
Bay State Blue is my favorite blue. Yes, it's very staining. I even needed bleach to get it off a glass pen and the glass full of water that I was cleaning the glass pen in. However, I have yet to find anything that really matches that intense electric blue. I have just resigned myself to dedicating an inexpensive pen to it.
My blues: J Herbin Eclat de Saphir, Montblanc Royal Blue, Pilot Iroshizuku Ajisai, Parker Quink Washable Blue, Pelikan königsblau Diamine Imperial Blue and, recently, Caran d’Ache Sky Blue; also love Aurora Blue!:)
54th Massachusetts was my first bottle of fountain pen ink back in 2015 and I love it. It is a pain to clean out of the pen, it doesn't behave as nice as diamine (but what does?) and there is absolutely no pop to the color, but all that being said, it is beautiful as long as you like a more subdued, muted color.
Anyone else have cursed inks?? I've got Noodler's blue eel and Organic Studio's Nitrogen. Both of which seem to always get on my hands even days after I've filled my pens with them. No other ink does it. Its been weeks since I last filled up with Nitrogen but just now I seem to have gotten blue on my hands. I have no idea what the blue ink is on that keeps getting on me.
I'll say that Organics Studio inks seem to have this tendency! The ink basically is everywhere after filling it up, I've stayed away because of this. Blue Eel is not one I've heard issues with though. - Colin
One of my favourite blues. Saturated, dark, not too dark, a little bit of sheen but not so that it overpowers the blue or smears, inexpensive, well behaved, no staining in my demonstrator and just the right pure blue colour. You can't go wrong with Sargasso Sea.
@@bookbutterfly2408 in my experience it is a wet ink but definitely not too wet, like most diamine inks it has very good flow, lubrication and overall performance.
@@alextaplin7354 Any recommendations for something with the same sort of colour and sheen of Sargasso Sea but with a little faster drying/better behaviour?
I like Platinum Pigment Blue. It flows well, is extremely permanent, shades really nicely, and can go from a muted blue to a good business blue depending on the wettness of your pen. It has gotten very expensive, though 54th mass is way too wet and penetrative for my tastes. It is extremely permanent, though, and is good for nonabsorbant paper (which appears to be the case with legal papers) since it dries quickly on those. I wanna try out Noodler's BCB. BSB is a good blue, but not fit for use as a daily blue ink.
What would be the best black ink for notetaking? Something that's a solid or saturated black, fast drying, easy to clean (easy maintainence overall), and obviously writes well on crappy paper? I'm struggling to find a black that fits these categories!
+John F (Uppish) Noodler's Blacks are good and can be found on Gouletpens, but to be completely honest, the best black is Sailor Kiwaguro Nano-Pigment Carbon Black... It's just amazing and it's the reason why I still haven't used my Noodler's Blacks (Black, HOD etc). Fast drying, permanent, doesn't feather at all (only ink to not feather on very cheap paper), and extremely dark. Only downside is that it is pigmented, so you'll need to wash it regularly. Normally, a non-feathering ink will take a long time to dry and a fast drying ink will feather, by Sailor Carbon Black is just perfect.

That seems pretty harsh! I'm a big fan of the Noodler's group (Black, Heart of Darkness, and X-Feather). We also have a black ink package set for both waterproof (www.gouletpens.com/isp-blacks-wp/p/ISP-Blacks-WP) and non-waterpoof (www.gouletpens.com/isp-blacks-nwp/p/ISP-Blacks-NWP) that could work. - Colin
+The Goulet Pen Company thank you for the suggestions. i'm definitely eyeing the heart of darkness as that seems to be pretty popular.
