The sound with the mouth is for boxers, it makes pounches more powerfull. more than scream karate styles. It gradually deflates lungs. in karate scream deflates inmediately. so boxers reserve power-oxygen. Oxygen and conservation-resistance is the key to win a real figth. Boxing is the specializing of fighting. I'm KungFu-blackbelt and Boxing master.
I was taught to never relax my stomach when I learned boxing, that it's more for defense in case you get socked with a body blow.
I guess it is kinda both, but yeah the difference in getting body blowed when you're tensing up vs when you're relaxed is quite staggering (literally).
