I just thought of a strat, though I haven't tested it, but someone could just change their garrsion after someone starts a rally.😅 Unless you aren't online, the strat could probably work.

Join an active alliance and be active, you will be able to grow quicker if your alliance is very active and focus on one troop type to work on, for you as f2p I would say focus on mages.
