Much to my pleasant surprise I “discovered” Pretty Things only after one day digging into the original songs Bowie decided to cover on Pinups. No wonder he was a fan of this band; they’re phenomenal. You really have to stop and ask what the heck happened in the 60’s that they registered so little interest here in the US. My older siblings and cousins who love the early Stones, Kinks, and Beatles have never heard of them - how is that possible? A little less produced and more garage-like and in my opinion a unique, early rock n roll sound. This uninterrupted album rip takes me from breakfast to lunch every day now. Thank you for posting.
One of the many underrated British bands of the 60's just as great as the Beatles, the Who, the Rolling Stones and the Kinks maybe even better just never got that big over here in the US and I admit I couldn't find any album of theirs especially here in Oklahoma now those other bands you could find their music here but the Pretty Things however no but with UA-cam now you can 😊 🎤🎸🎸🎹🎹🥁🥁❤❤
Voici les Pretty Things, un groupe typiquement british concurrent des Stones, mais qui n'a pas eu leur succès. Ce qu'il y a d'intéressant dans la présentation chonologique de cette complitation, c'est l'évolution du style des morceaux de 1965 aux années 70. Donc du sauvage de 1965 avec le son mono pourri à souhait mais tellement chaud et le chanteur qui miaule comme un chat sous la torture... (j'aime bien "big city" aux accent stoniens et encore plus "I can never say" aux harmonies nostalgiques merveilleuses, Buzz jerk et ses contretemps diaboliques et aussi le tube "midnight to six man"... bref presque - pour moi - que du bon dans ces années. Puis arrive la période psychédélique de 68 avec les voyages lysergiques bien signés de cette période. SF sorrow très bien foutu et spacial au possible prélude à une sorte de concept album comme le "Tommy" des Who sorti un peu à la même époque où le Sergent Pepper's des autres... une période où les sons s'élargissaient et n'avaient plus grand chose à voir avec la mono des années précédentes... et le disque fini par une jolie balade folk "loneliest person "dans laquelle la guitare en bois d'arbre ne hurle plus à la mort et le chat étranglé qui chantait en 1965 est devenu chat de salon ronronnant devant la cheminée... Et pour finir par l'assagissement un peu conceptuel des années 70... Eh oui, un "Parachute" qui n'a pas empêché ce grand groupe des débuts à tomber de haut dans une musique trop convenue, presque impersonnelle... selon mon goût, bien entendu. The Pretty Things is a band I loved that most people have no idea about. This is great stuff.
