  • today the road will be getting its first of 2 layers of blacktop. today at the #smithroadconstruction project. "Granite construction" as well as some other hauling companies are hauling in fresh asphalt in dump trucks.
    the first few clips of paving are where they are paving the sections they ripped out (where there were big stress cracks) and then the rest of the road. in total, they paved about half a mile of the road...up and down.
    I hope you enjoy this video. let me know if you have any questions
    thanks!!

    Reminded me of my summers as an engineering assistant with Jackson County Public Works in Oregon. I spent four summers working paving projects and surveying for the county (89, 90, 91 and 92). Those four summers were some of the best summers of my life.

    Been there done that in Texas for a couple years, loved the job but a bigger company bought us out and I didn't like it after that as much, I can remember well having to spray the bed down with diesel after emptying out in front of the lay down machine then pulling off the side of the road to spray, then back to the plant for another load of asphalt, we could only go about 75 miles out before the asphalt would start to set up in the bef and believe me you don't want that, it's like having to chop a hiway out the trailer no fun whatsoever. Some good memories.

    • @Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups
      @Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups  3 роки тому +1

      Wow...that's a cool memory. Yes I was wondering what they keep spraying on everything until my papa (grandpa) who was in the construction business told me that it was diesel. Yes I think that this plant was fairly close.... figure that, each truck would do a round trip every 30-45min. I remember the county guy telling me where it was coming from but can't remember at the moment.
      Hey thanks for watching...sounds like this video brought back some of what was mostly good memories!

    If the paving company had super dumps to haul asphalt, less trucks would be required. Honestly, they should be grinding out old asphalt layers over the entire distance and starting over from just above the base. But they look to be doing a great job and leaving a smooth road.

    • @Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups
      @Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups  3 роки тому +1

      Yes....this company does have some super dumps but the plant isint that far (and Im not going to complain seeing the sweet paint jobs on some of these trucks). I talked to the Foreman and can't exactly remember what he was saying but they were just grinding out the really bad spots on the road (but keep in mind they did about 4 miles of road with a few layers in only a couple of weeks) also they would have to dig up a lot of road....my papa (grandpa) who lived in this area for about 20yrs said there is almost a foot of asphalt that's been built up over the years. Yes they did an awesome job. Granite is one of the best paving companies around...was even able to get leads from them to start my construction carrier I hope as an exavator operator.
      Thanks for watching and leaving a comment

    • @rusttrail3
      @rusttrail3 3 роки тому +4

      If they cut deeper it costs more money and need more asphalt to replace it obviously, but really if the road is'nt coming apart you really don't want to cut that deep and disturb the ground anymore than you have to. You take a chance on hitting soft spots that once disturbed won't ever compact right and water springs also.

    • @andrewbrenneman9592

    I noticed as they were doing the final paving layer, that none of the Rake men were doing anything to slope or bevel the blacktop around the side drains or to any of the driveways they crossed, never mind any actual streets, so that there would be a smooth transition from the blacktop to the driveways, or for water to flow from the blacktop to the drains. 🧐 I wonder why? That is usually done as a matter of pro forma anywhere else you go in North America or Europe. 🤨🤨

    • @Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups
      @Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups  3 роки тому +2

      Yeah. That's the only thing they didn't do. My papa who lives in one of the driveways came up later and told them to please slope one if the drains otherwise it passes right by and goes straight to his driveway

      @larsmeijerink5471 3 роки тому +4

      In Europe the driveway they have to pave 2meters from the roadside as well. The asfalt is also a lot thicker over here, I guess because we are aloud to drive with heavier trucks. (At least in The Netherlands) i also think we use different machines because over here there is no need for people walking behind it. Love to see how people do it in other countries tho.

    • @Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups
      @Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups  3 роки тому +2

      Yes, well lots of semis go by here too. The layer they put on is about 4in in total...but according to my papa who has been here for 20+ year's. The road just gets paved on top of...so it's really more like a foot of asphalt and just a few inches of new asphalt.
      Yeah I always think it's interesting to Soo how other countries do it to...the people behind the machine are usually just to get and imperfections and usally to help taper the road

      @@Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups ok cool, we have like 30/40cm of asfalt but those are 3 kinds on top of each other first that looks a lot like concrete then the next and thats more normal asfalt and then on top a asfalt kind that we can SOAB Super Open Asfalt concrete (Beton) so the rain water is able to go through the asfalt. I don't know how we do it but we really never have any potholes so I think its a good way we do it (according to international research we have the 3 best roads of the world) don't know if its true but they are good for sure

    • @steadholderharrington9035
      @steadholderharrington9035 3 роки тому +2

      @@larsmeijerink5471 One thing to keep in mind here as you talk about thicknesses of road-asphalt and how it varies from country to country, and as to why; asphalt companies also have different formula's and grades of asphalt that they lay down according to what the local geological soil conditions are, and what traffic is most expected to run over it, as well as the weight or typical vehicle loads the asphalt is expected to endure during its expected lifetime of service. On top of all that, you also need to factor in what the expected meteorological conditions (weather) will be like over the course of a year that the asphalt also has to, if you can pardon the pun, weather. ☀️🌧❄️🌪💨 etc.

      @mikel9567 2 роки тому

      @@Tractors_Trucks_And_Pups Yes there are operator schools around though I've never been to one. I would highly recommend it if you can get into one. Also, pay attention to math, especially decimals and fractions as well as some basic geometry would help you a lot. When you do grading there is quite a bit of math involved. We do engineer measurements, and any private contractor who is working on a government project will as well. The difference is a foot is broken down into 1/10th's rather than inches. Operating equipment can get pretty technical especially when roads are involved. We as a county will do small paving jobs, primarily patching and levelling. We contract out the large jobs to companies like Lakeside. There will be an engineer on site watching to make sure everything is done properly. Get your CDL too. Paving is fun if your on equipment or in a truck but it sucks if your a laborer manning a rake or shovel. We, and most agencies as well as large companies, hire temps for the summer. I'd recommend getting onto this if its what your interested in. Our temps get stuck flagging a lot, but they also get exposed to a lot of different operations involved in the maintenance of our roads.

      Yes so the more wheels that you have and spaced out...the more weight you can haul. So let's say with a regular dump truck (now I don't know everything so I'm making up numbers) you can haul 5 yards of wet sand...with 2 extra axels you can haul let's say 10yds wet sand and with super dumps which have 4 extra axels you can haul let's say 16yds of wet sand...all legally

    I don't see why you are using auto grade control on the shoulder side. I would rather concentrate on having a smooth ride in the driving lane than making sure I have the exact thickness on the shoulder.
    Turn that thing off and let the screed find it's own level which will give a smooth ride. Learn to master running screed before you constantly turn to automatics.
