After years of using Vagrant/Virtualbox on Windows 7 for local development, when I finally moved to Windows 10 and discovered Hyper-V I was blown away by its speed, ease of setup and reliability. It was a revolution to ne after the slow, quirky and downright buggy performance of my previous setup.
Hyper-V is a joy to use. It's quick, stable and almost configuration-free unless you're a tweaker. It just works. I often have two VMs running Ubuntu going at the same time, and in 16GB of RAM, no issues. Hell, even if you reboot your host machine, Windows saves the VM state and reboots them automatically when the host is booted.

During your live stream for this, I had Virtualbox running 3 vm's on my windows 2019 server. One for plex, one for win10 and one for pihole. I converted everything over from Virtualbox to Hyper-V. It was night and day. Virtualbox VM's were super slow and super choppy. Now it takes no time to boot and working inside the vm is no longer a nightmare. I did not change anything to the hardware. Everything i changed was the software. Thanks for the help. Been in IT for years and never going to use or recommend virtualbox again.

@@alkaupadhyay7650 True but like half of the UA-camrs recommend buying VMWare Workstation Pro (because the free Player version is crap, cant even take snapshots last i checked).
VMWare pro is $200 and $100 to upgrade to the new version when they have releases.
So tbh a Windows Pro license is much better than that.
Ive used Hyper V a bit and it absolutely performs much better than Virtualbox or VMware WS Player, without any hardware pass-through.
People who are more tech savvy and want a free option with full performance should opt for Linux KVM anyway. It can be used on most of the Linux operating systems and its the basis for options such as Proxmox (also free).
Hyper V has the advantage of being extremely well integrated into the Windows environment that many are used to. Its also the basis for Azure Cloud VMs. College students can get Windows 10 or 11 Education edition, which is the same as Enterprise edition and includes Hyper V. So college students can get access to Hyper V way easier than examples such as a license for VMware Pro and Parallels for Mac.
But yea for absolute noobs who run Windows 10/11 Home edition and dont want to run Linux on bare metal… then there is no free type-1 hypervisor for them anyway. May as well use VirtualBox or get a free Oracle Cloud VM with 16gb of RAM and 4 cores.

This is great info. I use VMWare Workstation a lot to use and maintain VM's that run software that I don't want bogging down my host. I am always looking to learn more about how virtualization works, and I am looking forward to giving Hyper-V a shot. Even if it may not be as good of a solution as running VMWare, I still love seeing how some of the other options work. Thank you for sharing this content.

*Great HyperV video, Thanks!* Vmware does have free setups to try, like Vmware player and vSphere Hypervisor. vSphere does not rely on another operating system, it is OS independent, so you don’t need a Windows license. And it’s foot print is only 144 megabytes.
Everyone wants to compare their software to Vmware. But Vmware is highly underrated. Vmware is 1000 times more powerful than Virtualbox and these other free setups. Yes the larger services cost money. You get Hypervisor that powers vSphere and vCenter Server. You get containers and Kubernetes Clusters. You get fluid and responsive 3D graphics with DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.5 with up to 8Gb of memory for virtual machines and games. And you can create and configure complex IPv4/IPv6 virtual networks for your VMs. Vmware also has Cloud technology and Cloud Security, Telco Cloud with 5G and NSX, health state carbon black workload, Tanzu mesh service Disaster and site recovery.

Honestly the reason I use VirtualBox over Hyper-V is for things like USB passthrough to test hardware implementations and stuff for USB devices to make sure drivers and such are good or to test in Linux with my audio gear. It's just a lot easier to do things like that in VBox. I wish they worked side by side better so I could do more performant things in Hyper-V and testing things in VBox

What i understanded is that only Hyper-V Server is being discontinued in favor of Azure HCI. Hyper-V Server is a free standalone version of Windows Server Core With Hyper-V enabled. This makes sense as WSL2 acrually uses Hyper-V as one of their core components.
Maybe someone can clarify and confirm this information.

This is how I understood it as well. I don't think Hyper-V is going away. Hyper-V Server (an OS which is super lightweight just to allow you to run VMs) will not continue but Hyper-V is still a role available in Windows Server 2022 and that doesn't go end of life until 2031.

One big downside from Hyper-V: There is no (easy) USB passthrough. USB Mass-storage is working i think but a Bluetooth Dongle wont.
That is a blocker for me...

    • @BlackBot1986
      @BlackBot1986 2 роки тому

@Bravo Six I don't use the USB passthrough for storage, for data transfer i use them network variants. For software development I need Bluetooth in the VM... Without it is for me only barely usable.
ESXi can't do this? Ok I would guess they dropped it cause it is not very often needed for their use case.

Awesome video. I needed windows for school, but I also needed Linux for school too. I found after much experimentation that you get better performance running Linus as the main OS then load Windows as the VM. I was able to run Windows and a couple of Linux machines in a Virtual network on my mid grade laptop without issues. But with Windows as my main OS I could barely run one Linux VM. My Windows VM expeience was flawless (for windoze) and I could use my Linux Test VM at the same time with out problem. I have no quallifing factors for running Windows on a PC except for a Company enviorment where it is expected.
I have a mid grade $400 laptop from Cosco member sale price (saved $100) Lenove Idea pad3, Ryzen 7 5700 series with Ryzen on a chip. 12 GB mem (max). I run Linux Mint and play games off Steam and GOG with Lutri (See Chris Titus Tech for set up) I play all kinds of windows only video games with no issues. Diablo III on Battle Tech and many others. You want or have to vertualize on a Windows platform, then you have to use Windows Server for any performance, or..... use Linux.
P.S. Chris, you are a genius, mad respect! you have taught me so much and I learn more and more every time I watch your show!!!

gave up on hyper v when I tried to get things like copy paste and decent mouse integration working with ubuntu as a guest. Vbox might be slower but the reduction in frustration just trying to do simple things is so worth it. After finding a microsoft forum where people had been complaining about the lack of a fix in hyper v for 5 years i figured i can handle slightly laggy (which tbh is barely noticeable)

Try VMware Player. It works much faster than VirtualBox. I can say Windows 10 and 11 were super laggy and barely usable on VirtualBox and on VMware they run with almost native performance as far as I can even play games on them. Also, in case you want to run more virtual machines at once, VMware Pro activation is easier to crack than Windows activation (I have experience with that one since I used many Windows 'distros' like ggOS, Ghost Spectre and Nexus Lite OS). Though, VMware has some graphics problems with Nexus Lite OS (super stretched image) and with Age of Empires 2: Conquerors (only some text is blured or something).

Hey Titus, I've gotten the enhanced session (xrdp, clipboard) stuff working before using those scripts that M$ used to maintain on github (and have since abandoned due to WSL). Like you mentioned, people have forked the repo and kept the scripts up to date and add modified versions for different distros. IMO no one should be using the crappy default console view with Hyper-V vms.

I purchased your cool tool and enabled HyperV + WSL as you instructed but it only configured Hypervisor Platform. It did not install HyperV. The only difference I could see is I run PowerShell, your program for whatever reason loaded the toolbox in the basic Windows command prompt and then opened PowerShell where the actual install ran the installer from. Wonder if that might have caused an issue with the install? At any rate I had to go into Programs and Features and manually install HyperV from there. Also I am running Windows 10 Pro 64.

If they handicaped Hyper-V, they want to be sure that no one use older version of Windows in a VM. Because many that use Qemu/KVM on linux use it to use Windows 7 and even XP in order to run older windows software with active licenses that are still good, but won't work at all under Windows 10. I know someone that use a VM to run native DOS programs, because they run faster on newer machine.

One thing that keeps me from using VMs is the fact that 3D acceleration is being overlooked.

On enterprise hardware you can use sr-iov to distribute your gpu and other things across multiple vms. But it isn’t available on consumer hardware because most people don’t really use it. So why include it when you charge more for it.

Linux GUIs never work right in VMs, and it's not a Hyper-V thing. I've had resolution issues on every distro I've run and on every hypervisor I've run them on (Hyper-V, QEMU, ESXi, VMware Workstation, Virtualbox, etc.). Most often it starts out OK, then sometime later down the road, something always inevitably breaks it. It's gotten so I just don't like running any Linux system with a GUI in a VM and if I do, I just plan on having to sometimes work in a small environment for when the resolution inevitably reverts back. I usually use the most basic of basic graphical environments for my Linux VMs so things like Fluxbox, LXQT, etc. and without any compositor effects, with a heavy reliance on virtual desktops. Things like Gnome or KDE just aren't practical for a VM environment IMO.

If they are pushing everyone to WSL why not just jump over to the Linux Kernel once and for all? The GPL?

i kinda find qemu cumbersome to use. it's all console based and if i forget something on the cmd line i'm screwed. the only GUI for windows i know of is outdated (last release was 2017 iirc). i wonder i someone will ever make a new one. not sure why there is none made by the qemu guys themselves. hyperv at least has a gui. i'd really like to try it one day and compare it speed wise...+

VMware Player is 100% free and gives the same performance as VMware Pro. VMware pro just gives some extra options, but they are not really that important when you anyway know what you want.

Warning: turning this Windows feature on permanently removes 10s of GBs of space from your C drive, that you can't even get back by disabling the feature. Turning it off actually gave me a BSOD after a while.
