sorry about the poor mic quality. I recently learned I was wearing it wrong and correcting the positioning made my filters go nuts so I sort of sound a bit lispy in this one, this should be fixed in future entries.
content is good and the editing is good I just wish you had a better mic. Also the audio balance could be better but that kinda a bit pick over all good job man
My favourite is probably Hangman's Alley. Although space is limited, those limits give a very good opportunity for creativity. The aesthetic of buildings stacked upon each other with a narrow street in the middle is one i really like
My initial hopes of excitement were building up enough to reach the rooftops surrounding Hangman’s (as a means of alternate exits/for fun). But I can only reach 1 roof, at the far NW corner. Which is fine. It’s something.
I prefer hangman alley as a player home in the same style, it's free and isn't restricted like Home Plate. A nice, somewhat central western place to branch out from.
Finch Farm and Greygarden, once you realize that you can build on the highways. Build a fortress on the highway, with the peasants on the ground to farm your food.
I built up Greygarden so much that it started crashing my game anytime I got close enough to load the strutures lmao. RIP that save but it was fun while it lasted
I built up greygarden, used the highways but noody used the fort o the highway, same with finch farm ugh i swear you give people a hellivator and they refuse to use it, build wide safe stairs nah ah! well idiots what do you want? we need a dev made ramp, OH piss off game!
@@oofieloofie29 I actually dislike the Northeast. Red Rocket, Sanctuary and Abernathy are so close together, that building any mega-cities results in breaking your save.
@@corrupt1user Fair enough, though I always use red rocket as more of a player base and just ignore sanctuary unless I'm skipping freedom calls or I'm siding with the minutemen
I made the entire town in Starlight Drivein 6 years ago... three-floor beautiful buildings, multilevelled streets, shops, workshops, conveyed plant, hotel, saloon, police station. hospital, caravan center, the market, trophies museum... I spent months planning and upgrading it, such nostalgia... I wish I could find that save...
Small correction: Nuka Red Rocket does have standing water. You can fit 5 water purifiers if you're careful. You have to scrap some debris to uncover it, but it's close to the bottling plant.
@@MoonlitMike There are mods that increase the amount of debris that you can scrap. This is true. Those exist. However, there is also "debris" in many areas that can be scrapped in the vanilla game. There is a pool of water in Nuka Red Rocket that can be developed by scrapping a busted car in it that is titled "debris". I tested last night and was able to fit 5 standard water purifiers in it, although it was very tricky to fit them all in. I don't have any mods that change building in any way. I don't use any of those those. I have no idea why you are arguing with me. Go check it out for yourself. It's there.
My favourite has to be gray garden, I use it as my main player base. I made it like a hanging personal quarters under the bridge, great view for sniping and feel very secluded, even put in a trap door so I can drop down into the wasteland in my power armour :)
@@foehammer5047 yeh I was thinking of that, maybe with some trip trap so when there’s an intruder it all goes off lol unfortunately all the robots kill them before I’ve even got into my power armour :(
I don’t know if the crappy mic is intentional but it sure adds to the vid it’s charm, especially if we’re talking about the fallout universe. My absolute fav spot is the drive in , I always clear out the molerats and junk cars and build my hq there.
I always loved sanctuary hills. Huge area, a bunch of scrapable houses for flat platforms, a ton of water space for pumps, a huge field for crops, and a choke point entryway with the bridge over the moat that’s easy to defend
Same. I then put the electric warehouse doors on the entrances with wires running to a switch next to my spawn point. When the castle gets attacked I fast travel in, flip the switch to seal the castle and then take the attackers apart with 100+ defence and 20+ well armed settlers. Once we've killed everyone inside, I open the gates and mop up.
Kingsport lighthouse is my personal favorite. Decent sized area with buildings nearly in perfect shape, a stairwell down to a large marina, and its very, very easy to defend (one narrow winding road to get to it). Kingsport might be a little hard to unlock due to the children of Atom and the captured Glowing one, but Its worth the hassle.
I like that spot too. Very unique with the lighthouse and they way that the road goes up to the settlement is perfect for a couple of missile turrets. Also a legenday monster spawns very often on the beach between kingsport and that meat cannery.
I always use both Red Rockets as player lodging. I fill them with robots to tend to crops and defenses, and build little shacks for all my fleshy companions to live in while I'm not traveling with them. I like building my personal quarters on the roof.
With mods that let you scrap anything, you can clean up the streets pretty god and remove all the buildings. If you don't want to keep the street you can delete them too. I have built monstrous settlement there
@@peter4210 sadly, those mods cause large issues with rendering and such due to the precombines being destroyed - I remember using one and having the LOD models for the houses popping in and out of existence
@@peter4210 Ah - I used a modified version of Scrap Everything ultimate, and the LODs were showing up when I was… inside where the houses used to be I think Not a problem for the houses scrappable in vanilla ofc
As someone that plays exclusively in survival mode the location of starlight is even better. You can use it as your base of operations for around half the map. The location next to Trudy's store and it being close to Carla's route means you can get by without having your own stores, as well.
I probably would have suggested Longfellow's Cabin. While the terrain is a bit rougher than Dalton Farm, most of the settlement is dirt and foundations can easily be built to level everything else. The other advantage is that all attacks come from one direction, which makes defending the settlement extremely easy, if not the easiest of all settlements (I would say Dalton Farm is the second easiest with a few strategic structural placements).
I get this damn Fog Crawler that always spawns in Dalton Farm in one exact spot deep inside. Thing is, the room itself is basically sealed off, so every time I'm there, I have to visit the doctor's office and shoo (explode) the apocalypse*lobster from his bedroom...
I would have included Sanctuary Hills and Spectacle Island, but glad to see Starlite Drive-in. Was actually the first big settlement I ever built when I first played Fallout 4 years ago because basically for all the reasons you listed. It's just a purely fantastic location.
@@flingonber i have a habit of doing them quickly when I start a new character just cause 1) vertibirds have saved my life on survival and just so convenient and 2) as you pointed out Deliverer is an incredibly good early weapon plus armor mods
I always like to build a settlement on the water around the waterfront restaurant at Egret Tours. I love the build area. Lots of potential. I always build out Dalton Farm as well. I hate how frequently rad storms hit the area (and I REALLY hate how frequently they hit Echo Lake Lumber Mill), but I still like to build out the Far Harbor settlements anyway, especially Dalton Farm and Longfellow's Cabin. Abernathy Farm is great. I usually avoid building there until I have some established communities because settlements with already existing settlers become an easy target for raiders early on. Once I have a supply line and a lot of materials available, though, I love to wall out the settlement like you did in the video and then create the Abernathy Towers residential areas. One settlement that I would place in my top 5 that doesn't get mentioned here is the Finch Farm. I love building up on the bridge towering above the settlement (I like Graygarden for the same reason, and I usually also build on top of the movie theater building at Starlight...I just like high vantage points, I guess). I also really like The Slog. Building a whole structure around the swimming pool and then seeing the lighting effect when it becomes an "indoor" location is pretty spectacular.
For me, it was always Croup Manor, the Marina and Starlight Drive-in. Croup gives a natural advantage on the cliff, meaning if you block off the front yard with 2-3 wall layers, you can bottleneck attackers, making for a rather straightforward defense. It also means you can put crops in a gated perimeter behind the house for added resource protection. It's most important feature, though, would be the house itself. Align extra panels with the openings on the mansion and you can add several extra floors and rooms for a plethora of space. With some _extra_ planning, you can even place a huge fusion generator in the center of the house and wire powered defenses across the entire settlement. Starlight is a massive farming and manufacturing opportunity, a better "Grey Garden" than _Grey Garden._ All the more so with the Automatron DLC. Assign a full team of cheaply made Handies to go gang busters on a full line of scavenger workstations; then use the materials to build cheap Protectrons for a full farming outfit. Make sure to buy concrete from Carla and use it to build a full wall perimeter (the flat paving makes it easy). At that point, you'll need more tech to build either a detachment of Assaultrons or a squad of Sentrybots; they'll be your primary defense force. Works wonders. Because of it's location and it's space, Egret Tours Marina makes for a fantastic "military" hub. Plenty of room for food, water, lodging and defenses, most importantly the mortars. It's also like Croup, in that the Marina's waterfront allows you to focus enemies through one or two entrances. Plus, due in no small part to the surrounding hills, scaffolding can by utilised alongside scrap setups to build walkways behind large bulwarks for added defense and ease for foot traffic. The Marina becomes a fortress, another Castle on the frontier.
My recent play has the Marina serving as a massive merchant draw by having all the biggest merchandise counters staffed and well defended. I've also taking the Liberty of arming all my settlers to the teeth!! And sending them to other settlements to keep the roads clear.
Yep, Egret, Croup and Starlight always end up being big cities for me. I've recently thought I should develop Finch more, if Pa Finch, Ma Finch and Dan are OK with that. My only worry about Croup, now I've got a way of tackling the holes in the wall, is to make sure I concrete over that door to the basement. I also develop the Slog quite a lot, as somewhere to send ghoul settlers and also because I really like Wiseman - who always gets a promotion to Captain in the Minutemen when he comes on board. And of course every big settlement has at least 2 BFGs (Big Freakin' Guns) in it so I can howitzer-barrage anything dangerous into the Stone Age before going in. Always SO satisfying doing that in Dunwich Borers and watching those quite tough raiders turn into doggy chow thanks to Minuteman 88mm shells. Finally, it's always so rewarding to see the protective fencing and turrets facing the road from Starlight take care of passing deathclaws before the settlers get involved.
larger settlements can have enemies spawn directly within your settlements walls. For settlements like this (such as Sanctuary) its best to strategically place turret towers instead. EG gazebos with turrets on each of the 4 corners of the roof.
For the longest time I've only ever really put effort on Red Rocket Truck Stop and Starlight Drive-In. - Red Rocket Truck Stop, taking advantage of the small build area means I can make it as detailed as I can - Starlight Drive-In, being the opposite of Red Rocket means I can be as elaborate as I want with creating facilities and museums and these two are like walking distance away
As an OG player with over 10k play hours, that opening made me feel old af haha. I don’t know why, maybe because I’ve been playing the game since it came out. 🤷🏻♂️ This was a really great video though! I’m definitely subscribing for more videos. Starlight Drive in is definitely my favorite out of your 5.
Where are the castle, spectacle island and the sanctuary? The castle is awesome because it's a real life location that you can build on. It's a massive prebuild castle that you can expand or do what you want with. You can remove the mirelurker shit by doing the minutemen questline (or with console commands), but I prefere to keep it. It also has hidden tunnels and a radio beacon. Spectacle island has the biggest build site. The Sanctuary has one of the biggest build sites. It is also your characters old home which is good for roleplaying. It's a beautiful location. There are a lot of beautiful prebuilt houses and a giant tree to work with, while you have still a lot of free space to work with. The Sanctuary also starts with all crafting stations, which is great for low charisma no console commands runs. The Sanctuary also has it's own Vault which is FAR GREATER than anything Vault Tech has ever build!!! It's truly legendary!!! Sadly the Vault isn't part of the buildable space, but it's still cool for roleplaying and respawning rescources. I am not sure but I think, the Sanctuary is actually based on a real life location too. I now want to replay Fallout 4
Sunshine Tidings would be up towards the top of the list for me. I also really like the the Boathouse as well (I use a mod to make it the Railroad's Safe House cuz it's in a nice strategic place on the river and near Bunker Hill). Hangman's Alley is a nice central location, but I rarely build it up very much. The Castle tends to end up being an absolute fortress, but I always end up siding with the Minutemen - what can I say, they appeal to the Commie in me (no matter how annoying Preston is). There's also County Crossing. I love the location and it's got a decent amount of space that's easy to build on. The robot Greenhouse place is another one that's a great location as well - plus you can build under and on the highway bridge as well. I usually treat Red Rocket as a personal residence as opposed to an actual settlement. There's also the fact that the game tends to chug pretty bad when you've got Abernathy, Sanctuary, and Red Rocket all built up. But my PC is kinda old and needing upgrading as well. But I also use a bunch of mods, including ones that increase what you can scrap. And Sim Settlements is basically mandatory for me at this point. I recently added a mod that lets me recruit Minutemen Squads to go take care of Preston's silly requests too, and it's working out pretty well overall. The General shouldn't have to do everything themselves, right?
I'm fond of the Visitor's Center in Far Harbor. It isn't that difficult to use glitch tricks to repair the main structure. The bus stop near the entrance easily transforms into a guard tower. Honestly, I like all the Far Harbor locations. Sunshine Tidings Co-op is another favorite. I tend to turn it into a fortress, the justification being it is the first line of defense against Nuka World raiders. Wall off the perimeter & place a few gun/missile banks and you're golden.
First thing I do on any new character is establish the Red Rocket outside Concord as my personal safehouse. It's easy to wall off, the roofs are great spots for turrets, the interior is easy to fit with all manner of storage and display racks, and there's still plenty of room to place housing for companions. Plus it acts as a really good outpost to deter attackers from Sanctuary, which is harder to fortify.
"The parking lot even has a small sinkhole that's large enough for a few water purifiers". Meanwhile my Starlight: Has several water purifiers in that puddle that grant 40 water each, thereby making this tiny puddle a physics breaking goldmine for water which also happens to deliver most of the water found in the Northeastern Commonwealth. In one of my playthroughs, it literallly had the single highest water output of any settlement other than the castle and spectacle island. And keep in mind, those places are literally surrounded by water. (and one thing you forgot to mention in the video: Starlight has a random encounter spot within walking distance, thereby making it an excellent random enounter farm. I always place turrets right at the settlement entrance, which usually start eviscerating the enemies found in the spot once i fire even so much as one shot with a crappy pistol. Otherwise, fantastic video! )
Yay!! I still enjoy Fallout 4. Recent vid too. I'm currently engaged in a Survival/ Merchant roleplay. Whomever showed me Roleplaying in a video game bless you. Such fun.
Reading all your favorites settlements and builds reminds me of my favorite build. Abernathy Farm. I was testing the highest build limit just behind the existing house by the melon field. I began by building with stairs that have the ladder in the middle that are stackable. I built for an exit at the top of the Abernathy existing structure. As I neared the limit of the farm build height limit, I was at the very top of the electrical Tower. So I built right into the very top and build a floor 12 by 12 floor squares. With railings all round. No walls no roof. Then I but around oil lamps and soft lighting. And came back at night
Let me tell you the view from the top of that tower was incredible. The night was clear and you could see many familiar areas lit up. And my bar patrons were seated around this breathtaking space. And a glorious neon sign, tasteful written says only two words. Sky Bar.
It’s probably low on your list, but I enjoy Jamaica Plain. It’s a corner in a neighborhood. Not a build space. It’s awkward, but that only enhances my satisfaction at making it work. I also like that the cook station is in a nearby church, outside of, but connected to, the settlement. Just figuring that out was kind of cool. It’s a pretty decent homebase, too, location-wise (Hangman’s, County Crossing are my other two, predominantly).
I find Jamaica to be annoying in the base game, but if you get a mod that disables collision when building it makes it one of the best building locations in the game
@@flingonber nice plan. I’ve never been one to make a fortress. Or wall up a site. But people do. I know it’s effective. But it seems when i do do that, the enemies get inside, anyway. So i normally put you a series of guard posts. Nice ones, like big huts, any one of which i could effectively fight a raid.
Yes, many settlements, such as Sanctuary and Egret, have spawn points inside where the walls would be. I find it more efficient to find out where the spawn points are and focus the defences there. Although I recently responded to an attack in Somerville and found a legendary deathclaw had spawned inside my building and couldn't get out. It was carnage watching him throw everyone around.
Starlight Drive-In is SUCH a good place to build settlements! My most impressive settlement was built there - a mass town built out of steel cargo containers, surrounded by a big wall. I haven't touched my copy of Fallout 4 in quite a while but this video is making me want to get back into it.
I remember on my first save, I had built a completely fleshed out Dalton Farm settlement. I was so enamored with it, it was actually what first really got me into settlement mods lol
I have built a settlement a couple times at RR but was never really happy with it for the reasons stated. Using mods I built a really nice player home there. When playing vanilla I built a massive settlement and player home at Starlight, using the back office and side room as my player home. Spectacle Island is my favorite vanilla settlement location though. Massive build area, a relatively flat area between the workshop shack hill and broken house, down by the water. It makes for a great place to get creative. I've built so many different settlements and homes there.
Ive always used the drivethrough as my main base. First order of business was build walls and turrets. course that's what I do on all my settlements anyway. but the drive through being so close to everything really sold me.
I used concrete building foundations as border walls & set them just in the ground to give maximum height & then lined the outer perimeter of the high walls with every type of defense weapon available & used wooden platforms as elevated weapon platforms & guard towers which can be linked together to make an entire perimeter that you can walk around on & see in all directions for miles.
I love using abernathy with an unlimited build limit mod, you can make a big platform over the sloped acres that actually is pretty flush against the top of the hill. then i plop a village on top and make it look like the main farm is like an enterance to a farmers market, is so pretty and kind of looks like covenant
I have a mod that makes it possible to make Starlight Drive in play videos again. (Videos of the wasteland, can be found on Nexus Mods) so I decided to try and make it the theme of a post war drive in still with functioning speakers, etc and a food bar. I placed the beds in the small storage room things behind the screen itself so there were alot more beds, and some in a few trailers with another mod that allows you to place trailers.
I find the vanilla Red Rocket location my favourite, I usually put a floor structure snuggly against the garage door with stair access to the rooftop where I put all my generators. I like to build around the arch section to be the only entrance lined with concrete walls and ratted out as a raider outpost. Best of all no settlers to fend for and fitted with an absurd amount of rocket turrets to deter anything that mucks about
All comes down to personal preference and ones game style. Anything like warwick, spectacle, nordhagen, sanctuary, the slog, murkwater, starlight etc etc, where you can get water purifiers in is a great way to get the caps rolling in and it never ceases to amaze how creative so many people are with their builds at all locations.
The problem I have with Dalton Farm is the incredibly powerful settlement attacks. The first time I put settlers there it was promptly attacked by waves of deathclaw-level critters. Anglers picking off my turrets with their spit and deathclaws and gulpers inland. There were several waves of the things and I died several times despite being something like level 80.
As a trade lane maniac, I LOVE the Starlight Drive-In. Because of it’s central location, I can patch many settlements in the Northern part of the Commonwealth into it as a trade hub and connect it both ways to Sanctuary and/or my base at the castle if I’m a Minuteman General
i connect literally every settlement from vanilla and all the dlc there. its so cool watching the provisioners coming and going constantly. it seems so alive
I was absolutely shocked to find out that the settlement aspect of FO 4 was almost cut at the last minute. I love Fallout and being from Massachusetts and living later on near Bar Harbor Maine I do love the game, however the main story sucked. Without the building aspect of the game FO4 would have zero reply factor. I am so glad they included this at the last minute. BTW grey love your videos.
@3:54 you mention the Nuka-World Red Rocket has "no standing water sources," but that's not true. There's a large puddle in the northwest corner of the build area in which you can fit a few industrial water filters.
Been using load of your settlement videos since next gen came out on my vanilla ps5 version man. And i must say gave me a pretty fundemental ammount of knowledge to tackle some of these bigger sites. My favorite, for some reason is Warwick Farm. I have made that place a little industrial fishing/chem making factory on the side.
I can highly recommend Taffington boathouse for a small, more personal outpost, for maybe 2-3 people. It doesn't need very much for a super cozy, lore-friendly safe house, you basically just barricade the outer border, make a small garden, hook up basic necessities, and have several pre-built rooms for interior decoration. I've always had much more fun here than building everything from scratch on an open field, and ending up with ridiculous looking trash cubes. Starlight is good for a big settlement, but Taffington is much better for a personal safespot to relax in after a long day.
Still love Kingsport lighthouse and usually claim that as my personal settlement for myself and companions. I build a tower wrapping around the lighthouse. Awesome views and a genuinely peaceful spot to relax and unwind.
I decided to make my home in Abernathy farm mainly because it's the first place I saw a cat, so I had to be where the cat is. The slope is not a problem, I did a vault build with bases to get an ample build base, and still have space for a vault generator and an artillery cannon operated by McCready. My only problem is the small object count of the area, forcing me to do the drop and store glitch for a long while to build just a little more, and that's why I only did 3 vault floors instead of the 5 or 6 I wanted. Oh well, lets hope at least I get to meet Delores someday
Awww, The Castle didn't make this list? I freaking love building at The Castle. I always line the corridors with fusion reactors to power everything, I rebuild the outer walls with concrete, and then put wood/concrete foundations down to then build additional corridors on each of the walls that serves as the power armor bays for the lower half and crops on the roofs. Then at each of the five points, I build up towers about three levels tall where I put the bunks at for all of the Minutemen and Settlers with the roofs of each one being dedicated to artillery pieces. Then, if I get REALLY bored, I'll make a ammo manufacturing plant on the south side of the complex over the little lake there complete with a control room at the top. There's just sooooo much you can do with that location!
My favorites are Sanctuary, Castle, Starlight drive in and Sunshine Tidings. My most hated is Coastal Cottage, Everytime I see it I just think “What a joke” lol
Warwick Homestead is the most overlooked settlement IMO. Surrounded by water on almost all sides and enemies only attacking from one direction, the settlement is very defensible. The building ground is completely flat, with lots of farmland, water, and prebuilt structures. The downside of this settlement is that it is on the Southeastern edge of the map, very far away from your starting point. I didn't even know the place exist on my first 2 playthrough.
I agree, warwick is pretty awesome... if you can unlock the workshop. my first playthough I unlocked it pretty early via radiant minuteman quest, but my second and 3rd never got that option, and had to unlock via the institute.
My issue with the Warwick Homestead is the propensity of the Warwicks to spawn in the water (either the surrounding shore or reservoirs) and drowning. I have to go into the console and force them to be essential. That and the near constant calls for help when I'm trying to rebuild The Castle.
My favorites are sanctuary because: being the first one you unlock makes it super easy to get access to. it is large allowing you to build something more like the old pre-war suburbs or just spacing out different parts of the settlement for both visual and practical reasons. its placement at the early part of the game makes enemy levels lower as in a normal playthrough that is where the player goes shortly after leaving the vault and would only have a basic melee weapon and a 10mm pistol at that point. The river makes defending the front of town super easy as you have a chokepoint to work with. The river makes it easy to string up some water purifiers Comes with a prebuilt stand to store and modify your power armor. The castle because: Big walls with easily patchable holes to make a solid defense Besides allowing for a chokepoint the walls also let turrets and defending settlers to attack from the walls while being out of reach of any melee attackers Nice courtyard for agriculture and shops Space in the walls to act as housing for the people A good size patch of water for fitting a large number of water purifiers, allowing you to make stupid amounts of water for supporting a massive stock of people across the commonwealth., used for healing as they are a clean healing option or sold to vendors for easy money.
Those attacks on Dalton Farm are no joke at high levels. Multiple FogCrawlers at once and almost always legendaries in the mix. Make sure have a lot of defenses up. If you come in person have a good kneecapper weapon so your turrets can finish them off.
I really love "Vault 88" because you can do whatever you decide to and that's the only settlement that you need to unlock other places through exploration through the cave systems to make your settlement bigger than before
Hey, Grey! Just wanted to tell you youve got really good writing and voiceover work! I really hope you get a mic that shows off your chops and your channel gets to grow!
I am mortified that Coastal Cottage isn't on this list. The two houses there are truly delightful and the uneven terrain makes the most experienced hiker feel at home! Liked and subscribed- great presentation.
Its small and lots of items wont build where most want them. Personal opinion of yours is agains the opinion of the masses and you are entitled to your choice. Have a good one
@@Headlessgenie I love you. For taking my message seriously, you responded like someone who deserves a nobel peace prize. I literally googled "what is the worst settlement in Fallout 4" and wrote utter bullshit😅
There is no worse settlement, only more challenging ones. I haven't tested my skills with Coastal Cottage but look at the terrain, it's very difficult. The most difficult settlement I have worked on so far must be Somerville Place. Big building area, zero flat grounds. The lowest point and the highest are like 4 stories building different.
As a BoS enjoyer, my most recent build was at the Airport. Had to use a mod to be able to build there but basically rebuilt the terminal as a functional settlement. Probably my favourite build so far otherwise Hangmans is pretty cool. It is restrictive but I think that's part of the beauty of it.
The settlements are honestly one of the main reason I've been sucked into fallout 4. (also ive recently gone back to trying to finish FONV and boy oh boy does 4 have a ton of much needed QOL improvements!) but being able to have all these settlements to rebuild, something I've hardly touch on even after several hundred hours and only 2 playthroughs, really adds a lot of fun to a game that fails in several other aspects. (story, worldbuilding)
I prefer "verisimilitude" and building a huge concrete prefabricated blocks feels completely unrealistic. That's why in my 2nd playthrough, the two fav locations for me are: - County Crossing, which I turned into a heavily fortified lived-in post-apocalyptic farming community with barn houses (from Far Harbor DLC) that has a nice mood to it. The terrain allowed building a set of structures that resemble a tiny town (I adapted the completely ruined house into a base plate for two wind turbines and an elevated workshop area, while the original unscrappable shack became a lived-in infirmary). It even has a nicely organized and protected spot for roaming traders. The CC's location is optimal, as it's literally on a huge junction of trade routes, and (aside from a ruined nuclear facility just a stone's throw to the south), it is optimally located from a role playing standpoint. - Nordhagen Beach, which I turned into a refurbished ruins of a seaside resort with beach piers, lodging and so on, also heavily fortified). I like the placement of it, despite being remote. It has this cool feeling, Note: I play on mods, but the only mod that affects the settlement building I installed is the one with snappable junk fences. It makes life SO MUCH EASIER, especially if you're into, you know, walling the whole areas around the post-apocalyptic settlements.
Abernathy Farm was a favorite of mine too, at first. After a few playthroughs (and a bit of researched to confirm this wasn't just my game), I found it's maybe the most bugged settlement in Fallout 4. When it gets attacked and crops get destroyed, there's a bug that prevent you from both repairing or scraping them to replace them. Another annoying bug is that, the food production can get limited to 15, even though you already have more than enough crops to produce more when you first arrive there. And, even at more that 70 defense, Abernathy is usually my settlement that gets attacked the most.
I've noticed in a couple videos you've talked about the Nuka World Red Rocket being easy to defend because it only has one spawn point. It only has one "official" spawn point, but it is also right next to a ruined building that has a super-frequent enemy respawn rate. I have never gone to that Red Rocket and not seen it under attack from there. Usually, I have a dozen or more elevated turrets pointed in that direction and I'm always having to repair them. It does make it a loot farm though.
Taffington, man. Great spot for all kinds of stuff and strategically-placed minuteman artillery cannons can hit a variety of spots that make for amusing explodey times.
My current hardcore playthrough is centered around Egret Marina Tours, its a nice central location only a stones throw from Diamond City. Hangman's Alley is nice and central too, I go there to stock up on water+food during long journeys.
Important tip: Don't settle at Sanctuary, Abernathy Farm and Red Rocket at the same time, it is well know to cause major lag and callstack issues when you are expanding too much. In Sim Settlement mod it's called 'Triangle of death' because all the npcs starts freezing after a time because of the callstack traffic. Search it up for more answers. Callstack = List of executions, script heavy mods rely heavily on this, same with Settlers. If you plan on using "scrap everything" I recommend that you don't as you can break the precombine. Precombines are meshes that are attached to eachother instead of separated to clear up lag. Use "Clean my settlement" if you have to.
I built a full baseball field and stadium at the Starlight drive-in. Complete with bases and mannequins at each field position. I think I remember finding baseball uniforms for all of them to wear. The movie screen was the outfield wall similar to the "green monster" at the Boston stadium. It was super creepy and fun.
The Marina is my favorite. I must be one of the only people who likes to build small personal settlements and I really like building it inside the little shack on the pier.
I always liked Jamaica plain as a trading settlement, I would build tens for the parking lot and turn the two buildings into a bar and storage area, although I wish we got the whole town, or a larger area, Sanctuary is awesome and I always end up making a different version of it each time, but its just... been there done that, everyone gets that settlement I love Longfellow's Settlement (I forget the name), its spectacle island but the path that runs around it just helps me think better when building
I have to say that island in the south of the map, Great view point, little to no attacks, and a great home away from home, plus if you put the artillery there, you can cover the hole southern end of the map
Egret Tours Marina: Super mutants spawn right across the road at the coast guard area (which is a funny place to even have such a building, but let's ignore that for now). This is a huge problem to start with. Ragstags also spawn right outside the buildable area as well in multiple spots which adds another danger, even if it's far less then the super mutants. Mirelurk nests nearby could be a huge problem as well. It does have a lot of build area and with several buildings being usable to build in, not counting in the non-scrappable objects that block you from doing much inside. The biggest issue here might be the build limits in the sense of "we of Bethesda limit your objects because we are sure your PC is a potato and we can not use a engine that isn't as buggy". This location could have been golden if it were not for the build limits and unscrappable objects mostly. Dalton Farm: It gets attacked a lot and this by the worst parties usually (super mutants in larger groups). You can't really build against this threat and with Bethesda forcing you to return to defend it or your settlement is lost... No this isn't a great location in that sense at all for that reason alone. You simply can't really do much in building either unless you use mods and console commands. Abernathy Farm: Great location, but it gets attacked a lot. A lot of spawn points around this location and all seem to be drawn to the settlement. There are even spawn points inside the buildable area adding to the problem. You can't really defend against that without keeping the place small. The tower is another problem as it's 1 object, you can't snap anything to it's sides to expand it or build even higher using the tower. The huge plot of farm land is however a bonus that forces you to make this into a farming community which makes it a dilemma. Red Rocket: A location that has a ferral problem on a regular basis. Also there are parts of the area that can't be scrapped which makes it inconvenient to really build something nice. The building itself has 3 doors to get inside, which would be nice but can also cause problems. If you could have more build space here it would be awesome, specially because one side has some minor cliff edge to it which can be used as a defensive feature. Problem is that only bugs spawn on that side and nothing really more then that. Spawn points for ferrals are right on the edge of the build area and one even inside. This doesn't make it a ideal location. Red Rocket (DLC): This location is indeed far better with build area, however actually building here is adding challenges on it's own. There are no natural defenses anywhere in sight for starters. Added to that, whether you keep the raiders in power or not doesn't matter, this will still keep trouble around. If not the raiders all kinds of other critters roam the area. Starlight Drive-in: Loads of space to build in, but with many objects not being scrappable and the screen itself not being able to be used as guard location makes it rather a troublesome place. It is however a huge advantage to turn this into a major hub between your settlements as it poses a excellent cross roads between them. The crater gives you a water opertunity but its tricky to get the barrels away from there without needing radaway. There is little to no farm land which makes it one of those 'meh' locations.
Right now I'm kicking myself on Dalton Farm. It never dawned on me to build out over the water. That'll make things a heckuva lot more convenient for the housing while also giving my existing settlement space a nice trading post on the land.
I'm partial to commonwealth Redrock. It's a perfect place for a safe spot to dump loot and repair or modify armor and weapons. The castle is Also amazing the challenge of turning it from crumbling ruins to a fortress for the minutemen is a nice challenge
The northwest part of the map really is the best place for a large community of settlements. Sanctuary, Abernathy, Starlight, and Sunshine can all be big population centers, and Red Rocket makes a good private player home.
I like Sanctuary Hills. It’s full of houses, one of which actually belongs to me. Also it has Shaun’s crib. I sit for hours on end in an easy chair next to the crib and sing lullabies to a Jangles Moon Monkey placed inside, pretending the apocalypse never happened.
Currently building Sunshine Tidings. Managed to skirt the entire property with concrete walls then capped it all about the buildings so its all open nice and flat. The plan is to build a city on top as I have about 6 plus floors foe each bldg. Then I think ill make a maze underground with a few choice cages and boobytraps for a bit of a maze runner feel
One thing I see that seems to be a problem for building big settlements is the build limit. I found out from another UA-camr that you can scrap Gamma Guns in the workshop. The dupping glitch works with a guns, both scraping them and storing them for use again. Just get more than five in case you accidentally scrap a Gamma Gun.
sorry about the poor mic quality. I recently learned I was wearing it wrong and correcting the positioning made my filters go nuts so I sort of sound a bit lispy in this one, this should be fixed in future entries.

I always love turning spectacle island into a massive city.
I love turning it into a Gunners Arena with a viewing area. Good times!
Spectacle Island all the way for me too.
Making a complete spectacle of spectacle island is what it is there for.
Spectacle island is almost always turned into “Deathclaw Park” for me lol
@@xCODYSSEUS nice!
My favourite is probably Hangman's Alley. Although space is limited, those limits give a very good opportunity for creativity. The aesthetic of buildings stacked upon each other with a narrow street in the middle is one i really like
Yeh I think I’m going to work on hangman’s alley next.
For such a small place there is a lot of ideas and projects that you can work on at Hangman’s Alley
In the real world I think someone would chuck over a million grenades over the gates of hangman’s alley to flush out the settlement
I built up greygarden, used the highways but noody used the fort o the highway, same with finch farm ugh
i swear you give people a hellivator and they refuse to use it, build wide safe stairs nah ah! well idiots what do you want? we need a dev made ramp, OH piss off game!
Idk man, the fact you can make 20-story buildings in Abernathy Farms, it's no competition
@@oofieloofie29 I actually dislike the Northeast. Red Rocket, Sanctuary and Abernathy are so close together, that building any mega-cities results in breaking your save.

Small correction: Nuka Red Rocket does have standing water. You can fit 5 water purifiers if you're careful. You have to scrap some debris to uncover it, but it's close to the bottling plant.
Dude you can't scrap debris without mods.
@@thornescapes7707 you can't scrap debris tho

My first ever compact build was inside the bus on the viaduct. It was quite cozy.

I always make Sanctuary my main base for lore reasons. But it does offer the best opportunity to turn a once sleepy suburb into a nice little town.
I also loves Sanctuary but if it wasn't so buggy I would love it more
Surprised the castle isn't on here. Patching the wall using various tricks has always been my favorite.
Sanctuary Hills is just amazing. Best location imo
With mods that let you scrap anything, you can clean up the streets pretty god and remove all the buildings. If you don't want to keep the street you can delete them too. I have built monstrous settlement there
Nope. Triangle of death. It, Red Rocket, and Abernathy are infamous for causing massive technical problems.
@@peter4210 sadly, those mods cause large issues with rendering and such due to the precombines being destroyed - I remember using one and having the LOD models for the houses popping in and out of existence

@@peter4210 Ah - I used a modified version of Scrap Everything ultimate, and the LODs were showing up when I was… inside where the houses used to be I think
Not a problem for the houses scrappable in vanilla ofc
I am always drawn to Croup Manor as my base location because it is by the sea. I scrap everything and build my own "Manor" and go from there. 😎
I like this site as well as a player base, it’s just a shame the basement can’t be renovated 😢
It sometimes comes with your personal bugged friendly ghoul :D
You need to see Oxhorn on UA-cam and his build at longfellows cabin. Especially at night. You'll thank me later
I would have included Sanctuary Hills and Spectacle Island, but glad to see Starlite Drive-in. Was actually the first big settlement I ever built when I first played Fallout 4 years ago because basically for all the reasons you listed. It's just a purely fantastic location.
@@flingonber i leave no bobblehead behind and Vertibirds

My favorite is using a scafold tower, it's possible to squeeze 3 turrets on the small square.
For the longest time I've only ever really put effort on Red Rocket Truck Stop and Starlight Drive-In.
- Red Rocket Truck Stop, taking advantage of the small build area means I can make it as detailed as I can
- Starlight Drive-In, being the opposite of Red Rocket means I can be as elaborate as I want with creating facilities and museums
and these two are like walking distance away
They made a video listing their favourite settlements. They have different favourites than you do. That’s okay.
@@maddyrevenge 🤓
Kingsport Lighthouse has to be my favorite, lots of room to build and it's VERY defendable!
Plus it acts as a really good outpost to deter attackers from Sanctuary, which is harder to fortify.
i use it or sanctuary as a place to send my companions, but i do use them as my home bases myself
Finch Farm has a super tall build height and the nearby overpass allows for a watch tower fortress
I love how much footage he has of the Taffington Boathouse, even though it’s not one of the featured settlements
No spectacle island im surprised
Taffington Boathouse. Water highways all over the map from your front door and a “fairly” centralized location.

@@Theegreygaming yeah i mean stylistically
@3:54 you mention the Nuka-World Red Rocket has "no standing water sources," but that's not true. There's a large puddle in the northwest corner of the build area in which you can fit a few industrial water filters.
This is a nice surprise to see recommended, gonna have to sort out my mods and play the game again
Such a great alternative list rather than the same old same old. Good for you
I decided to make my home in Abernathy farm mainly because it's the first place I saw a cat, so I had to be where the cat is.
Coastal Cottage is why God gave us concrete floor foundations :) but why the hell can't you demolish all the crap lying around?
Sanctuary, Castle, Spec Island, Abernathy and Starlight are the best locations
My favorites are sanctuary because:
being the first one you unlock makes it super easy to get access to.
it is large allowing you to build something more like the old pre-war suburbs or just spacing out different parts of the settlement for both visual and practical reasons.
its placement at the early part of the game makes enemy levels lower as in a normal playthrough that is where the player goes shortly after leaving the vault and would only have a basic melee weapon and a 10mm pistol at that point.
The river makes defending the front of town super easy as you have a chokepoint to work with.
The river makes it easy to string up some water purifiers
Comes with a prebuilt stand to store and modify your power armor.
The castle because:
Big walls with easily patchable holes to make a solid defense
Besides allowing for a chokepoint the walls also let turrets and defending settlers to attack from the walls while being out of reach of any melee attackers
Nice courtyard for agriculture and shops
Space in the walls to act as housing for the people
A good size patch of water for fitting a large number of water purifiers, allowing you to make stupid amounts of water for supporting a massive stock of people across the commonwealth., used for healing as they are a clean healing option or sold to vendors for easy money.
Those attacks on Dalton Farm are no joke at high levels. Multiple FogCrawlers at once and almost always legendaries in the mix. Make sure have a lot of defenses up. If you come in person have a good kneecapper weapon so your turrets can finish them off.
Abernathy Farm would be great if it weren't gettin attacked every second day and their daughter wasn't consistently gettin kidnapped by raiders
Ahahah
As a BoS enjoyer, my most recent build was at the Airport. Had to use a mod to be able to build there but basically rebuilt the terminal as a functional settlement. Probably my favourite build so far otherwise Hangmans is pretty cool. It is restrictive but I think that's part of the beauty of it.
The settlements are honestly one of the main reason I've been sucked into fallout 4. (also ive recently gone back to trying to finish FONV and boy oh boy does 4 have a ton of much needed QOL improvements!)
but being able to have all these settlements to rebuild, something I've hardly touch on even after several hundred hours and only 2 playthroughs, really adds a lot of fun to a game that fails in several other aspects. (story, worldbuilding)
I really like a lot of the mods that make sanctuary better/different but my favorite build location is probably the castle.
rebuilding the walls of the castle with foundation blocks was soooo satisfying
@@ebadathar5066 fr i do it on every play through even though i don’t side with the minutemen each time
I prefer "verisimilitude" and building a huge concrete prefabricated blocks feels completely unrealistic. That's why in my 2nd playthrough, the two fav locations for me are:
- County Crossing, which I turned into a heavily fortified lived-in post-apocalyptic farming community with barn houses (from Far Harbor DLC) that has a nice mood to it.
It has this cool feeling,
Note: I play on mods, but the only mod that affects the settlement building I installed is the one with snappable junk fences.
Sunshine trading coop is awesome, main warehouse is crafting center, other warehouse is stores, and the cabins are living quarters
Very professional and informative channel. glad I found it!
I love Dalton Farms.
It's my absolute favourite site off all of them; both aesthetically and for build potential.
Greygarden is becoming my favorite. It comes with a robot workforce and highway you can build on.
Strange... the only issue I had so far with Sim Settlement at Sanctuary was the electricity bugging out every single time...
I always liked Jamaica plain as a trading settlement, I would build tens for the parking lot and turn the two buildings into a bar and storage area, although I wish we got the whole town, or a larger area,
Sanctuary is awesome and I always end up making a different version of it each time, but its just... been there done that, everyone gets that settlement
I love Longfellow's Settlement (I forget the name), its spectacle island but the path that runs around it just helps me think better when building
Lmao Abernathy farms turning into a giant fucking high rise is priceless
it's time consuming, I'll tell you what...
I love red rocket
Putting junk fences around and make shift settler houses such a small location can feel like a crowded village
Subscribed! This just resparked my interest in Fallout 4
I like Mystic Pines and I can't believe it wasn't a settlement in the vanilla game. Sure seems like it was supposed to be?
This is rhe kind of content I was craving 2 years ago
Im an F4 noob, but started the series when F1 was first released. I would love that style of game with the building and tower defense of this game.
0:34 Ah yes, who doesn't remember the all time Favorite "FALLIOUT 4"? 😂But still, nice Vid 👍
I like Sanctuary Hills. It’s full of houses, one of which actually belongs to me. Also it has Shaun’s crib. I sit for hours on end in an easy chair next to the crib and sing lullabies to a Jangles Moon Monkey placed inside, pretending the apocalypse never happened.
u need to install sims bro
jangles the moon monkey in the crib got me feeling bad as hell
I have to agree! The Dalton Farm was the only surprise. I am not a fan of Far Harbor and would replace that with the Mechanists' Lair.
My favorite is nordhagen beach mainly because it's easy to defend and it's my money pit. 17 large water purifiers 😅
Lol I post glitched so many water purifiers into the slog.
Need a build video for your Abernathy Farm! Looked awesome!
I love this its like Fallout real estate haha great video!!
One thing I see that seems to be a problem for building big settlements is the build limit.
I found out from another UA-camr that you can scrap Gamma Guns in the workshop. The dupping glitch works with a guns, both scraping them and storing them for use again. Just get more than five in case you accidentally scrap a Gamma Gun.
good vid! the bg music made it better imo
