God bless Phil Lynott. He took a mostly forgotten 19th C drinking song and turned it into a rock classic. God bless Eric Bell a mostly forgotten brilliant guitar soloist. Phil Lynott was the most quintessential Dubliner of his generation, revealed in his accent and his forthright attitude. His mantle has yet to be picked up. (yew tew are mere manakins by comparison)
Didn't matter too much which guitarist was chosen to replace Eric Bell, none of them wanted to play Whiskey in the Jar. And I don't blame them, Eric was an absolute genius of a player.
Looks like they're both playing through H&H amps. There's what looks like a Sound City half stack behind Phil, but that's probably a bass amp. His guitar is clearly plugged into the combo to the left of that. Probably not theirs though, usually the backline gear was provided by the TV studio.
Unsure about the amps, but it looks like Phil is playing a Gibson SG II, which is pretty rare- only made for one year-ish. Don't see too many pros playing them as Gibson cut the quality to be cost-competitive with the cheap Japanese imports of the time, but the thin necks had great action and the mini-humbuckers had killer tone!
Love it, they had it & didn't get their well deserved notoriety for their Talent! They should be inducted into The " Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame"! 💖 😨 One Awesome Band! 🥰💯💖✌️👁️⭐
RR HOF doesn't deserve Thin Lizzy. They prefer Beyonce and Dolly. It should be called The Country Hip Hop Hall of Fame... It is a joke and the everyday average people see right through their hypocrisy. Don't waste your time voting. They handpick who they want. Your vote means nothing. (Like 2020)
This is great! Phil's slamming the hell out of that guitar, pretty much playing it as though it's a bass. The tone's wound all the way back...and I think I can hear a dropped bottom E string comping for the missing bass. They were an incredible band. Totally unique!
The vocals lag behind the guitar. But consistently, so obviously intended. Phil does this in other songs too. It gives the song a laid back kind of feeling. I played in a german irish-folk band and whenever I tried anything unorthodox like this or speeding up and slowing down, which you hear alot in irish folk, they came down on me like a ton of bricks.
I thought exactly the same thing - some people just don't know when they're in the presence of greatness . the kids applauded respectfully - silly nuts goes down in history looking at his watch .....
I think it's just on this song he switches from bass to rhythm. Same as the studio version which apparently was done in one take according to the producer. Cheers
There's a video of him on UA-cam doing "the man"s a fool" on some tv show . He's on guitar , some other cool fucker is playing bass . Not Thin Lizzy . But it's great all the same .

this is the best version of this song. that other shite of a band that is MentallicA are a bunch of has been's and hacks. the one and only TL can only do justice to this song. Long Live Thin Lizzy. The BEST Dublin, Eire, Crumblin, Irish band ever. Ireland Forever ! oh and Scotland too.
That's, erm, that's how they did this song… if you listen to recent clips of Mr. Bell doing it, you'll hear that pause has become much more pronounced. Why? That's his arrangement, so he must like to do it that way…
Check out the one from October the 30th, 1980. A London show, the crowd singing along and going wild, the core three from this show reuniting to form a five together with Mssrs. Scott Gorham and Snowy White. No video though… still, it's interesting to compare the two. This take has fire and guts while that one has power and majesty.
Listening to it 50 years later. It's still brilliant
same here - just learnt to play it on my acoustic - out of respect .
I am 71 young and hear it loud, cheers from Germany 😀😀🎉🍷🍀
Brilliant. Never seen footage of Thin Lizzy doing this song live, and thankfully it's the full length version with that wonderful guitar solo.
Wow…. How good is Eric Bell…. Love this guitar solo !!!
For me, the best of Lizzy's guitarists…

Legendary guitar solo!!!!!! 💃✊
One of the best guitar solos ever...
Seeing Phil playing a guitar (and not a bass) and singing for the first time..
Probably the best live version I've seen.
The Musikladen version is great also. They're all great
Metallica does excellent version too
Phil Lynott touched hearts with his poetry and his delivery. This song moves me as an Irish American.
His Voice is so good here.

the best whiskey in the jar! best lizzy lineup!
Eric Bell was amazing on guitar!! I love this footage. They sound great!!
Like Phil once said"Eric is the only one who can play whiskey properly"and what a great sound he had here what kind of amps anyone?

My favourite performance of this classic. Great band.
Back in the day when real MUSICIANS played their instruments and
sang their songs without all that electronic gadgets to make them
sound too perfect!!

Thin Lizzy don't need no Hall of Fame…
The fact they aren’t in it shows it’s a total sham.
RR HOF doesn't deserve Thin Lizzy.

I agree you speak truths
That Hall of Fame is a joke. And Thin Lizzy not being in it is yet more proof of that.

Ja super für 1973 ❤habe dieses lied damals schon geliebt und jetzt mit metallica einfach nur super ❤❤❤❤❤
I love that song so much, but only in the version of "THIN LIZZY" !! NO doubt !!!!
They were a force of nature as a live band, amazing drive and energy! Amazing guitar play by Eric Bell! Wow and what a sexy beast Phil Lynott was ;-).
god bless eric bell what a brillant guitar player
Just great vocals! Great band live! Clean and pure music!
Phil's vocals are the best on the original and Eric bell guitar playing is awesome this is the best version
Eric Bell is an awesome guitarist.
What a rare gem, indeed! Thank you for posting it!
Such a Great Song and Legendary performances from the Originals.
AMAZING VERSION
One of the sublime-est versions of a sublime song, on the 3rd anniversary of Jimi Hendrix 's death. "Daddio!"
Very unusually for a rock band, there is no bass guitar on this song. Same with the studio version. Phil plays six string, not bass.
I was just wondering where the bass was. Thanks for clearing that up!
