This song is surreal. It has the same feeling of being underwater. It’s mystical yet dangerous, like you shouldn’t be there. Yet, the more deeper you go, the more you want to know; Therefore, the more you want to know, the less air there is. It’s almost as if… You can’t breathe. You try swim back up, trying to call for help in this empty world. Crying to anyone to hear your prayers. You can’t breathe. You yell out, water filling your lungs ever so. You look up one more time, praying for the light to find your corpse. You can’t breathe. But no one will ever find you. In a cavern of misery and cadaver, one with a town and church, you find yourself like the houses that surround you… empty and forgotten.

The emotions here are complex, and they describe my view of Wet Dry World perfectly. A lonely claustrophobic little set piece within a giant city with no end, you are alone except for the unnatural beings which call this place home. Once a model for the city around is now a mere piece of trash, a footnote in history that was lucky to make it in the castle. Yet it still has stars. But does the City of Giants also have it's own Giant Stars? You'll never know, you'll never know if anyone is or has ever lived there. It's a captivating mystery with no answer, like modern media presents the question "What us the true meaning of Christmas?" But unlike that, the only answer is the one you walk away with. Headcanons can be beautiful things, and the changes to the lore by you can be even better. What is the story of this lonely little flooded model city in the garbage?

The houses would be like the houses in the town underwater, except they would be in the entire map. Unfortunately, it lagged the game due to high polygon count. The water switches were always there, but Nintendo saw the bob-ombs underwater as being too dark for kids, so they replaced the Bob-ombs with enemies, and it seemed to have worked. Everybody dance and rave at the rythm of their favorite songs at that time. For moments it was like a benevolent and cool totalitarian system where the day was a dream and the night was no longer a nightmare, it was portal to another world... a dream world where music was the vessel. All the places in the 90s where losing their purpose and being converted to liminal spaces, like the old fabrics being converted into nightclubs. It was a time where the world felt like a giant liminal space that we wanted to stay forever. Technology was still a child and a hope for a better future, and overall, an illusion, a perfect illusion. It's like everybody were on drugs on that time, even those who didn't take them were being drugged only by music, dancing and partying, better yet, without taking any drugs or alcohol. Men and women dancing together, being friendly and making pure erotic love only just for the sake of friendship and community. Healthier and cleaner than the 60s the 90s were. "music can't have temperature" i said to myself foolishly. it's been weeks, months even, since i last felt real warmth. i'm trapped in a world created by my own intrusive thoughts. i can't even breathe. god, why can't i ever just shut up. the landscape changes for the worst. no matter what i do, the world around me changes to be a hellscape in that situation. the ringing won't stop. i have no idea when it started, or when it'll end. i have no idea on where it comes from, either. there's no life here, and almost no food sources. although, there's plentiful, albeit smoggy, water in the flood. but i can't sustain myself for long, unless a miracle happens. but i already know god forbid that from happening. it's begun. my worst nightmare. i have no idea what caused it, the wall to break by whatever else is here that i need to avoid, or more water coming from... somewhere. all i know is that i don't have much time. the flood has begun to rise, and the water is rising extremely slowly. all i have is that looming sun to by some coincidence, emit enough heat to evaporate the water entirely. the sun is blisteringly hot, opposing my frostbitten skin and feeling like the inside of a humidifier that hasn't been turned on in years and creates fog, but the water is only rising faster. i still have, what, a day left before it gets to me, but i have no tools to get to the highest platform. all i have is my keys, and a piece of cloth. who knows, maybe something amazing will happen, but currently, the water is just rising. it's begun to rain. but there's no clouds, oddly. i noticed a whirlpool spinning at what looked to me like mach one in the flood, but since then i heard spraying from the flood, then i felt rain. the ringing creates ripples in the water that get higher as the ringing gets stronger. right now, the waves have reached a platform far below me, but the water level is only halfway to it. i can't do it. the rain gets clumpier, colder and faster by the second. the ripples splash in my eyes each time i look at them. the sun is giving me second and third degree burns, despite the constant rain, and the cherry on top, the ringing has burst my eardrums, and i can tell by the blood on both sides of me both in a circle. i caught a glimpse of the sun, and i got blinded for a few seconds. w-why... are the walls getting closer to me? why is the sun getting bigger? it's unbearable. i can see my every bone from the constant burns. i'm bleeding out, but some force is keeping me alive. the... the ringing... it stopped..? why can't i move? why do i not feel pain? why is the water getting closer much faster..? shit. i'm dying. this must be what it's like to experience the process of death. some sort of outside observer or controller is keeping me on two limbs, but my body has experienced so much trauma and harm that it simply gave up. this must be purgatory, then. but why... did the water go away? and... what's that burning behind me? i feel so... boiled... this hellscape of a place just never gets better, does it? it's unbearably hot here, i'll just have to climb those bars into the tunnel. at least i can have shade there, right? right? my lord are the bars hot. each time i climb one bar to the next, the heat seems to exponentially rise. and i swear with all my will i saw part of the bars melt, but when i look back, it's just a wavy, black, gooey mess of metal. finally, i climbed all the way up. no idea why there's some bars hanging over this drop that i can stand on, but i can just slowly climb-drop down... okay. i'm here. i can't see behind these two bar sections, but i hear chatting behind the one with the lower gap. but whatever is there, i don't want any of it. i'm behind the... look, i'll just call it the 'low-gap bars' to make it easier. anyways, i see nobody, but there is water here... and a-... a roof? that's odd, considering the other area had no such roof, but even weirder, there's houses... who caused this flood here, why, and why here? i was used to seeing wooden floats, "living" things that could harm me, red iron boxes, balls of electricity, even some cubes with two-way arrows on them. but i can't see any of those here. not even things that hurt me. there are barred-off sections with no way inside, and even a dry fountain. i spotted another crystal thing, much more common in the other area than just the two here. byt with no food here, i won't last long. just kill me. i've waited for the sweet release of death for months since i came here. the walls are cracked, similar to my malnourished skin. but there is hope of death, as i'm hearing a lot of crackling and seeing a lot of waves in the air, signaling fire. but, i have no hope. i can't reach the bars anymore. i see the fire in the bars i came from... but i can't reach it.

@@opiumfields3285 But it can't have ever been in the beta to begin with. I don't understand how it could have "leaked". Nintendo 64 songs are very recognisable. They all have the same kind of sounds in them. Listen to the song called Zoness from Star Fox 64, if this song was in Super Mario 64 the synths would sound like the synths in that song.
What this song makes me feel is that this place used to be a thriving civilization but a disaster happend that flooded the whole world and now what used to be a city is now a ruin deep on the ocean's floor. Also i feel like a custom level of the sky box would be cool like exploring each home and the enemy's would be the corpses of the people who lived here. I know that it sounds to dark fo m64 but it be pretty cool.
Super mario 64 is such a… lonely game. Sure, there’s all these worlds but every being out there is trying to get you. Mario is on a struggle all by himself, alone. Then, you get sent back to the castle after every mission and you are faced with all these empty halls and rooms. The toads that you encounter kinda just flicker into and out of existence. They never offer any comfort or support. Its not like other mario games where there are all sorts of friendly characters present, even in hostile worlds, giving advice and company to mario.
since i was a child playing this game for the first time, i always loved Wet Dry World. I used to jump into this world so many times just to explore and play with the waterlevels... rising and sinking. Just looking at this image brings me back a huge piece of nostalgia. i dont know but theres just something mysterious with the scenery of the map. An Empty town underwater, no one is around, only ruins and the sun shining from above the surface. Why and how did this city get flooded in the first place? What did the inhabitants look like? Why is there a small "church" in this world? I think its best not to answer those questions and just let this be a mystery...
Reminds me of the fate of the people of Laputa the “castle in the sky” a city that ultimately was devoid of life after everyone perished… wet dry world has allusions to the fable of Atlantis which was met with a similar fate. perhaps these are all the same myth in different formats which is why this story and tragedy continues to haunt us
I've been reading the comments and everyone's saying what feelings this tune evokes in them.. there's similarities but also many differences.. I guess what I'm trying to say you really can't just put into words what this song feels like.. everyone has different emotions attached to the memory of that level but one thing is certain there was just something about that level that drew you in...
Ok so there are some people who genuinely believe this was composed by Nintendo. And was going to be included in the beta build. It’s called a creepypasta with background lore hun, search it up.
this happens with every creepypasta ever, a spooky story is made and kids instantly latch onto it and think it's true. gotta say tho, all that personalised stuff did have a little bit of an effect on me. i 100% completed the game for the first time recently, and going back into it initially made me feel a bit uneasy in places, certain areas felt more unsettling than usual
You dove too deep. Reality stretched too thin. You can see the surface but it's out of reach. No matter how far you run, you can't escape. It's getting harder to breathe. Sinking to the bottom. Lost.
I made the mistake of falling asleep to this......the dreams I had were so surreal, and according to my mom, I was "struggling to swim" in my sleep, if that makes any sense
At the start its like a deep cave that have something in the shadows.. But id you continue with the path you discover the wonderful things that that place have...
after hearing this and looking at the artwork, I'm terrified to ever enter that cursed city ever again. do you think the residents of this ancient city drowned? did they get abducted by the water? did they become insane and die off because their minds couldn't handle what they were seeing? what if Wet-Dry World was a paradox that no living being was meant to uncover? what if Mario was indeed the only living being to ever set foot in Wet-Dry World to begin with? but if this were true, then who left behind such technology like working lifts and buttons? such a perplexing mystery.
This makes me think about the ancient structures found in India I think, after or before a tsunami had hit. Just how many civilizations have been lost in time?
this makes me imagine a mash up game of super mario and hotline miami LOL mario wearing shades and a varsity jacket beating the shit outta koopas wearing white suits with blue dress shirts, goombas wearing black suits with purple dress shirts. bowser being the boss russian guy, baby bowser being the son. luigi being richard, wario being rasmus, wailuigi being don juan (that part kind of doesnt make sense but roll with me xD)
I can guess it’s like an ancient city underwater and in ruins. The reason why I can tell is because the buildings in the background are the ones from Shibam in Yemen which is founded in the 9th century. Some people thought it was from Casares which is from Spain, But it has been debunked.
Im finally able to understand all this As you can see, the skybox is a flooded city But in the level itself you're not drowning even tho you're underwater Thats why it is called "wet dry world" And now.. that strange sign What it means? it's begun to rain. but there's no clouds, oddly. i noticed a whirlpool spinning at what looked to me like mach one in the flood, but since then i heard spraying from the flood, then i felt rain. the ringing creates ripples in the water that get higher as the ringing gets stronger. right now, the waves have reached a platform far below me, but the water level is only halfway to it.
i can't do it. the rain gets clumpier, colder and faster by the second. the ripples splash in my eyes each time i look at them. the sun is giving me second and third degree burns, despite the constant rain, and the cherry on top, the ringing has burst my eardrums, and i can tell by the blood on both sides of me both in a circle. i caught a glimpse of the sun, and i got blinded for a few seconds.
w-why... are the walls getting closer to me?
why is the sun getting bigger?
it's unbearable. i can see my every bone from the constant burns. i'm bleeding out, but some force is keeping me alive.
the...
the ringing...
it stopped..?
why can't i move?
why do i not feel pain?
why is the water getting closer much faster..?
shit. i'm dying. this must be what it's like to experience the process of death. some sort of outside observer or controller is keeping me on two limbs, but my body has experienced so much trauma and harm that it simply gave up.
this must be purgatory, then.
but why... did the water go away? and...
what's that burning behind me?
i feel so...
boiled...
this hellscape of a place just never gets better, does it?
it's unbearably hot here, i'll just have to climb those bars into the tunnel. at least i can have shade there, right?
right?
my lord are the bars hot. each time i climb one bar to the next, the heat seems to exponentially rise. and i swear with all my will i saw part of the bars melt, but when i look back, it's just a wavy, black, gooey mess of metal.
finally, i climbed all the way up. no idea why there's some bars hanging over this drop that i can stand on, but i can just slowly climb-drop down...
okay. i'm here. i can't see behind these two bar sections, but i hear chatting behind the one with the lower gap. but whatever is there, i don't want any of it.
i'm behind the... look, i'll just call it the 'low-gap bars' to make it easier. anyways, i see nobody, but there is water here... and a-...
a roof? that's odd, considering the other area had no such roof, but even weirder, there's houses... who caused this flood here, why, and why here?
i was used to seeing wooden floats, "living" things that could harm me, red iron boxes, balls of electricity, even some cubes with two-way arrows on them. but i can't see any of those here. not even things that hurt me. there are barred-off sections with no way inside, and even a dry fountain. i spotted another crystal thing, much more common in the other area than just the two here. byt with no food here, i won't last long.
just kill me. i've waited for the sweet release of death for months since i came here. the walls are cracked, similar to my malnourished skin. but there is hope of death, as i'm hearing a lot of crackling and seeing a lot of waves in the air, signaling fire. but, i have no hope.
i can't reach the bars anymore.
i see the fire in the bars i came from...
but i can't reach it.
Gives a feeling of playing wet dry world and accidentally glitching out of bounds into some secret inverted version of the level that goes on like a maze.
parallel universes then. that thing that speedrunners use?
I just love how atmospheric this music is. The ambience and the lurking trheat, it's absolutely amazing!
Look, my child self would NOT complain if this was in the original game....such calming and peaceful track
I was watching the original version, forgot I had autoplay on, and was routed to this version. Longest 3 minutes of my life. I guess the song really did draw me in.
*This Music sounds like, Your in a Underwater city and you exploring the ruins*
Of course
ffs bold isnt your special font
you're in the 90's
If they ever decide to remaster Super Mario 64 again, I want this to be the theme for Wet-Dry World, it fits the stage much better
i left a comment on the original 4 years ago wondering about an extended version and i only find this now. thanks so much
The only picture In my mind from this ost is mario metal ball chained underwater drowning trying to get him to swim up to safety as you are holding your controller frantically scared and inna panic trynna get him to breath before your time runs out...
They recently found the remains of an underwater city and dug up its ancient artifacts..
@conkel it’s

Okay consider me crazy but how am I absolutely jamming out to this masterpiece
The more I look at this picture, the harder it gets to breathe. Almost like a drowning
I can see how the water moves..
i dont think a nintendo 64 can handle this theme
it’s one the main reasons it was scrapped
@TogMob
Are you serious??
You still believe that this was original SM64 beta ost?? SMMFH bruv...
It was always the Super Mario Bros Cave theme....
@@iss2075 this song was written and composed. it was never in the files because the N64 couldn’t handle the song
@@opiumfields3285 Sorry to burst your bubble but this is fan-made content...
I miss this meme
I do too. Wish there could be a personalization ROM hack, one of these days.
This theme sounds like your traveling to space
This should also be used in Snowman’s Land: Inside The Igloo mission.
it sounded so scary but than its sounds so cool like space

If there's ever a remake of Super Mario 64, this NEEDS to be in it.
This music reminds me of the big bang
Very mystical and haunting sounding great work.
since i was a child playing this game for the first time, i always loved Wet Dry World.
I’m happy that this was posted on my birthday.
Reminds me of the fate of the people of Laputa the “castle in the sky” a city that ultimately was devoid of life after everyone perished… wet dry world has allusions to the fable of Atlantis which was met with a similar fate. perhaps these are all the same myth in different formats which is why this story and tragedy continues to haunt us
Makes me feel like I’m the last person in the world with no one around and something trying to find me
Plus it also feels like I’m lost trying to find a way to the light even tho I can’t
2 days 1 year before I was born, this song was made.
This is very relaxing, while I enjoy the song itself, it seems it would be misplaced in wet dry world.
This sounds like a Kingdom Hearts theme if one of the games were made for the N64.
Also sounds very fitting for an Undertale/Deltarune theme.
This song literally hypnotizes me
Ok so there are some people who genuinely believe this was composed by Nintendo.
To be fair, despite being somewhat obvious it's a creepypasta and nothing more, it still does its job far better than Sonic.EXE IMHO.
You dove too deep. Reality stretched too thin. You can see the surface but it's out of reach. No matter how far you run, you can't escape. It's getting harder to breathe. Sinking to the bottom. Lost.
I made the mistake of falling asleep to this......the dreams I had were so surreal, and according to my mom, I was "struggling to swim" in my sleep, if that makes any sense
the only level i remember playing as a kid and the one i feel most connected to has a negative emotional aura
huh weird
This song has underwater ambience from DKC vibes
everyone pouring their hearts into these comments im just thinking about this music playing while mario jumps around like “WAHOO” WAH@
They were really pushing 16mb of storage on the cartridge to the limits in 1995, sounds like CD audio 🔥🔥
Thanks
Parece uma daquelas músicas de momentos sérios nos RPGs.

Mysteriously beautiful.
This would totally make great mermaid 🧜♀️ music
I don’t know what this is but it’s lovely
Fits the feeling of loneliness I get when I play sm64.
it sounds like the music that would play in an akira-style anime as the world dies, so it can be reborn.
this gives off hollow knight vibes and its really cool
Damn, you're right, that must be why I've been listening to this a lot recently :)

This sounds nice for a Zelda Water temple too
This Song gives me Game Boy advance vibes
This makes me think about the ancient structures found in India I think, after or before a tsunami had hit. Just how many civilizations have been lost in time?
Because the original is not linked in the description, I put the link to the original here:

Mario 64 wet dry world
Sounds more fit for Metroid or Zelda than Super Mario
Metroid for sure!
Can somebody remake this using the actual N64 soundfont itself? I'm curious as fo what it'd be like in game.
Love this sooooooo much
This makes me feel ,
So in wet dry world you’re underwater the whole time, but there’s also no water around you at the same time? This level’s weird
Did Nintendo of Kyoto make this theme before having the level share music with Cave dungeon?
This sounds like an early version of Aquatic Ambiance
10/10 for this song
Is this an actual Koji Kondo original composition or fanmade?
Fanmade
Okay, that’s what I thought
The sky box feels liminal
Still Love this theme :D
This reaches binaural levels
Brains... Mario with a gun killing undeads.
this makes me imagine a mash up game of super mario and hotline miami LOL
mario wearing shades and a varsity jacket beating the shit outta koopas wearing white suits with blue dress shirts, goombas wearing black suits with purple dress shirts. bowser being the boss russian guy, baby bowser being the son. luigi being richard, wario being rasmus, wailuigi being don juan (that part kind of doesnt make sense but roll with me xD)
This sound like a OST in the Nether MC
It's so creepy dude 😨😳
Wonder why they put the town underwater in the game
I can guess it’s like an ancient city underwater and in ruins.
The reason why I can tell is because the buildings in the background are the ones from Shibam in Yemen which is founded in the 9th century.
Some people thought it was from Casares which is from Spain,
But it has been debunked.
Im finally able to understand all this
As you can see, the skybox is a flooded city
But in the level itself you're not drowning even tho you're underwater
Thats why it is called "wet dry world"
And now.. that strange sign
What it means?
Well.. it just gives you a hint about how the water works when you enter the painting
The city in the cage?
Just a lil representation of the city in the skybox
The only thing i can't understand is... why is all this place in a giant concrete box?
And why is it keeping you away from this strange city?
Its not keeping u away from the strange city...its keeping whatever is left in the strange city from you
@@mavcaguila yup, i know
Also one more thing... how did the city from the skybox flooded?
was it more of a ocean monument?
everything is so weird in this game
at some point it no longer feels like a mario game
@@aguadetamarindo1947 well if we go with the b33 mod we flooded it since in the mod we are st the brown temple on the top
@@mavcaguila yeah but.. the mod has nothing to do with this, you can also find a flooded city if you go to the 3☆ door in one of the beta lobby then into the door that leads to the basement, so maybe that one was just another city
Lets go back to vanilla mario 64
Global warm can't be the reason this city flooded, it got EXTREMLY flooded, maybe you could be right, it was our fault the city got flooded, but it wasn't that much, so... im lost, im fricking lost, i dont understand anything, maybe they just wanted to make an atlantis level like, im confused ,_,
I'd actually love to see the N64 hardware try to handle this
This needs a remix
Fun fact my birthday is also on 7/29
This is genuinely horrifying
I find it relaxing
Why is The Conception happening while SM64 music plays in the background?
gives me bleach battle OST vibes
