Okay, so it took me a few listens to really understand "Chinese Satellite" so I don't blame you for that first impression of it, mine was much the same. I think the song (at least from my own understanding and interpretation) is about how Phoebe, who is not a spiritual person, wishes to believe in some kind of higher power but is not able to. I interpret the lyric about the stars not being out so she wishes on the satellite as her attempting to look for guidance from a God or higher power in the stars, not being able to see/feel it, and instead putting her faith in something she can see and understand; the satellite, or science (Phoebe has apparently stated before how she believes science is the closest we can get to supernatural forces, and she really wishes she were able to believe in things like ghosts or spirits or life after death in some capacity). Keeping this in mind, I read the lyrics as sort of a desperate plea for something to believe in in the face of the inevitability of death. Especially when she mentions how she would join in with the evangelicals If it meant she would be able to reconnect with a passed loved one after she herself dies. The song references religion, ghosts/spirits, and aliens as things Phoebe wishes she could believe in, and I think this is because she does not /want/ to believe that "when you're gone it's forever". It's a song I very personally relate to so it has become one of my favorites on the album. I hope you can give it another listen with this theory in mind, and I would love to hear your thoughts if you do!! :)
This is an awesome insight! I didn’t know who it Phoebes spirituality (or, I guess, the lack thereof) but that’s super interesting. I relistened with this in mind and yeah I can totally see how the lyrics are more impactful this way
Yes!! It took me a couple of listens as well, and her commentary on this song on Genius and/or Apple music for the talks about this connection with religion!
the two other vocalists in graceland too are lucy dacus and julien baker. they have some great stuff themselves, and all three of them have an EP called boygenius which has that indie acoustic feel to it, definitely a good listen
I love how your first reactions were exactly what mine were, I was starting to get bored and then I heard Moon Song and it really made me bring my attention back to the songs and I was able to enjoy the rest of the album completely. What I love about I Know The End is that is makes me want to listen to the album again and it feeds back into DVD Menu so well. I enjoyed the album so much more the second time around. I found Phoebe’s music earlier this year too and so I think i was expecting a little bit more Stranger in the Alps vibes because I didn’t really process the time passed since that album came out and all of the change and projects Phoebe has done since. I quickly become enamoured by literally everything Phoebe touches. I don’t know if you’ve listened to Christian Lee Hutson, but Phoebe recently produce his new album Beginners and I felt like I could feel the Phoebe touch on the record. Loved this video! I’m definitely going to check out more!
as an atheist who has struggled a lot with loss and grief this year, Chinese satellite is probably one of the most poignant and relatable songs ever. I think it's my favourite song of all time. makes me sob every time.
@@mattopgenorth4897 I agree. it's embarrassing imo to not get one of the most controversial and poignant topics rn - spiritualism/existentialism. genuinely shocked me that he didn't understand the lyrics. I would be embarrassed if I didn't have the critical thinking skills to comprehend Chinese satellite lol
this is becoming one of my favorite channels i love your energy and the editing really enhances whatever aspect of the music you wanna highlight :)) keep up the good work!!
Halloween and Moon Song grew on me, the whole album did actually. I didnt like it at first, was underwhelmed but couple listens and wow overwhelmed. It's way more than the sum of its parts fr ❤❤ love ur reaction btw same
Matt Lorence that album is incredible and different from her other stuff. Her voice combined with Conor Oberst’s is a really nice fit, and it’s a bit more straight indie rock.
“Punisher” (the actual song) was written about Elliot Smith, and how a “punisher” in Phoebe’s mind is a fan who tends to go over and above in professing love for an artist/icon/whatever to the point that they embarrass themselves in front of their idol, which is how Phoebe sees herself acting if Elliot Smith was still alive today, and they had the chance at meeting (which would have been very likely; she apparently lives a block or two away from his old house in LA).
dude, this video was my exact experience listening to this for the first time. also the first video i'm seeing from you, and i'm into it. i'm working on an album and it's like a crossroads between phoebe-esque singer-songwriter and james blake-y electronic pop. i'd love to know what you think about it -- we seem to be pretty similar in our musical intuitions and stuff. let me know if i can send you a track or two.
Hey! I know you posted this a while ago but I wanted to suggest Gregory Alan Isakov for "alt" country - my favs of his are Southern Star, San Luis, and Was I Just Another One. Would love for you to react to his album Evening Machines!!
Yes! I love Gregory Alan Isakov, This Empty Northern Hemisphere has such a nice atmosphere and The Weatherman really amplifies that folk/country sound especially on Saint Valentine
(no bluegrass, just stuff I'd love to see) Julien Baker - Sprained Ankle & Funeral Pyre/Distant Solar Systems (best listened back to back) The Cure - Pornography & Disintegration Julia Holter - Have You In My Wilderness Carla dal Forno - The Garden EP Basically anything by Mazzy Star or Hope Sandoval (Fade Into You, Into Dust, Halah, Lay Myself Down, The Spoils, ...?) Grouper - Ruins for the saddest piano Anyway, Punisher is ace
Most basic country recommendation ever (that im sure u already know) but if u haven’t listened to kacey musgraves, she is definitely worth the hype. literally every single song and album is worth the hype. also i loved this video ❤️❤️
If you aren't super into Country but that bluegrass do be hittin then I definitely recommend Kaia Kater it's very southern gothic bluegrass and it goes pretty hard
if you like shoegazey sounds kinda like Phoebe's stuff I REALLY reccomend Long Beard. Her work is very beautiful and entrancing just as phoebe's. Everytime I listen to her stuff i feel like im being teleported into space like seriously i love Long Beard so much ahhhhh.
Oh my god. I’ve been listening to Phoebe for a little while but just got around to listening to Better Oblivion Community Center. Dude you have got to listen to this it’s so good.
Yo, wild! I was already thinking about this before you made the alt-country request, because I just heard this album too and it reminded me of the emotional spaces that another album took me to - Dying Star by Ruston Kelly. His Halloween EP is quite good too. But Dying Star really scratches this alt-country/singer-songwriter itch for me. Similar introspective melancholia with these blasts of emotion and energy interspersed. I would put Ruston Kelly and Phoebe Bridgers songs on the same nighttime drive playlist, if that makes sense :)
Lol don’t wanna overhype it when these things are all personal in the ways they hit you. But yeah just where I was at emotionally while listening to her album felt adjacent. Not the same but related.
@@mattlorence4854 if you'd like to know more about the male vocalist. His name is Conor Oberst and he was part of the band Bright Eyes. I would rlly recommend their album "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning"
You should check out “Gregory Alan isokav with the Colorado symphony” As well as The album “Give me a minute” by Lizzy Mcalpine one of my favorites this year
I'm way late but Jason Isbell is pretty much the only country-adjacent artist I listen to. Specifically his 2017 album with The 400 Unit called "The Nashville Sound" is a great entry point, with some of the best songwriting of the past decade, in my opinion.
I know this is an old video, but if you’re still interested in country/bluegrass recs I’m a BIG fan of I’m With Her, as well as all the other projects of its members (especially Sarah Jarosz’s solo stuff and Crooked Still). The Decemberists are more alt rock but have kinda a country vibe as well.
It’s a metaphor for (think of how there’s the recurring motif of water and of course the moon in moon song right) how complex the person is; they’re as deep as the ocean, and Phoebe can barely begin to start understanding them fully.
Hey bud, Some amazing alt country artists would be John Prine (RIP, lost his life to COVID this year and Phoebe covered him) as well as Bright Eyes (Conor Oberst's band, aka the guy from Better Oblivion) and the classics, The (Dixie) Chicks
Idk if I'm late to this, but you requested some great country music, so I recommend you listen to Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves. All that I''ll say is that is a beautiful masterpiece💖

Just checked it out - really cool stuff. I think the combination of the crazy synths with the lo-fi quality sounds pretty sick. I hope they drop more music soon
