  • Charities are struggling to find new ways to help record numbers of Americans who are out of work during the pandemic, adding to the millions who already experience food insecurity. CBS News business analyst Jill Schlesinger talks with food pantries in New York, Maine and California, whose work in their communities is being strained - by increased demand, costlier supplies, and a reduced workforce - and yet has never been more valuable.

Farmers are plowing crops under because their contracts to sell to restaurants, schools, etc. disappeared. They don't like it any more than you do but right now they would lose even more money by harvesting these crops.

@@nghtwtchmn129 This is what people don't understand about the food system.. All the demand on grocery stores, pantries and banks can't make up for lack of demand from restaurants, education institutions, caterer, hotels. There may be a way to convert packaging a 20 lb bag of onions meant for a restaurant to something for a grocery store, but that costs millions of $$, and a farmer has to ask him/herself if it's worth the money to convert their packing process.

    • @icebergrose8955

Not the farmers fault. When they loose on a crop, they loose more if they try to harvest and than if give away.
Government should buy crops then get military to take to the cities.

Not to sound cruel, but for far too long people have focused on living a life of immediate gratification. It seems to be more important to have the latest iPhones, big screen tv’s, computers, fancy cars, dinner at restaurants, etc. than saving for a rainy day. The concept of living below your means seems to have taken a backseat to having all the niceties of life. Well, it’s now a rainy day and the poor financial decisions of the past now have consequences. These are painful lessons, but hopefully it will be a good teaching lesson for many in society.

Conversely, according to the 1996 book The Millionaire Next Door, millionaires aren't so much people who make more than you and I as they are people who save and invest more than the rest of us. They do so by living below their means: driving Fords and Chevys rather than Cadillacs and Lincolns for example.

I am a little confused. The one thing that all financial planners and money managers say is the first thing you need to do is make sure you have a 6 month emergency fund in case something happens to your income. I am sure there are bona fide people in need, but we are only 1 or 2 months into most shutdowns and new people need food? Not to be critical, but are people making sure they have 6 months of emergency funds before they go buy their expensive toys and fancy cars?? Anyone else thinking the same??

The six months of savings is the dream for most but not the reality, it is not for the lack of hard work. If corporations were paying the people who actually do the work a liveable wage, people would have money to save. Corporations pay the CEOs millions and the workers minimum wage. The employees make so little money that they qualify for Government assistance like food stamps; so in essence the Government is subsidizing these big businesses. Shame!

Set aside the ego of "US is a first world country and should never experienced this". Each and every country no matter what the status is trying to adjust its a matter of having a proper mindset. Health and Human Service on all Levels. Farm Bill's, Corporate, etc. Evidence, facts, laws, medical, housing, transportation, veterans, animals and etc. This is the United States. What can do do? Heart condition should be grateful and you can tell your families of generations what DID YOU DO to save people? How many died from a pandemic? Never say it can't happen to you! There was a Governor in the 1800's that helped immigrants farm there yards. His Friends refuse to donate shovels, etc, so he sold his prize horse to purchase the tools. This is what he said, "what are immigrants good at?" He was right. They obtain land, they have a job, they did not starve and they built. To boost the economy and helps their neighbors not a select few and started feeding those who homeless and lost jobs. Fact German prisoners worked the farms. Fact. Free food banks and food stamps are horrible and destroy families and are even counterproductive.
The food given at food pantries take tremendous amounts of time, energy and money for overhead. The balance tips towards pollution from the transportation and recipients' vehicles -- more than if it was purchased at a store. The coordination costs a lot more than the cost of sellers at the grocery store.
The grocery store loses customers to food pantries and that hurts them.
The vast majority of people who receive food stamps and are at these free food programs are obese. Free food makes people obese. If the recipient is not underweight then giving her free food is harming her. Medicare pays for weight loss surgery and still gives that person food stamps.
Put everyone who wants food stamps on a scale and only give stamps if she is underweight. Obviously, she is getting food somewhere if she's obese.
Half the food given to recipients is thrown out. Nobody wants canned pumpkin and green beans.
Stop having free food services. It's killing people!
