- In this video I'll go through most of the #tools that I believe someone starting out on their #bookbinding journey could use. This list is similar to what is shown in most bookbinding books, except I avoid some of the more bookbinding specific tools. However, it is my list and I'm sure other experienced bookbinders would produce a different list. The main limitation of this list is that it does not contain the tools needed to back a book. I'll cover specific bookbinding tools, such as backing boards, hammer and appropriate press, in another video.

Bookbinding is very similar to leather working tools. It's a shame that we seem to be losing the tool supply stores. When I find one I usually expect to hang there all day.

Pro tip : for the cutting mat and bench hook, I bought myself a kitchen cutting board with a lid, and work on it upside down :)

Last week I thought about what I had lying around my house, and for whatever reason it occurred to me that I could turn it into a bonafide hardcover book. Cardboard and paperboard in the recycling, plenty of lined paper, a cork backed steel ruler, some sharp blades, a drill, compasses & set squares, some needles and thread, Gorilla tape, cutting board, and my coffee table. I had watched a couple hobbyist channels bind books so I remembered what I could and immediately got started.
It was delightful. There wasn't a single hiccup. With some clever stapler usage in leu of clamps or a vise, everything came out snug, flush, and sturdy. It's the crudest book I've ever seen, the cardboard is abused, but it opens perfectly, the groove on the spine came out well. The Gorilla tape made a clean cover without any glue.
Now I'm building my shopping list to do this for real, and my gimpy little homemade Moleskine has become my notebook as I teach myself this. I work as a barista right now, and my favorite regular is an old flaneur, Fernando Monte, a former director, professor, and lifelong poet. He published his poetry in the 80s and it got pretty popular in Canada and especially France. One day he came to me with a fresh new notebook in his hand, angrily waving it over his head and yelled, _"I wrote entire books for a living, and got paid $0.45 a pop. This thing costs $22 dollars! I should have just left my fucking books empty!!"_
So I think I'm gonna make books.

i picked up bookbinding as a hobby over the school year and now that i'm on summer break and trying to do some bookbinding i'm realizing how lucky i am to have access to a dedicated book arts lab during the school year!

Quarantine got me trying to develop new hobbies...book binding is something Ive wanted to learn for a while haha. Got me a bunch of paper backs that I want to make hard covered, both for aesthetic reasons and just plan worry for the flimsy and easily ruined binding.

This video is priceless for any one that is interested in book binding, thank you so much for this, this has given me more insight to the tools one should get/use.

One thing im realy suprised at, is you even give comments back within videos that are a few years old, not many UA-camrs comment back on old content.

Thanks for the nice feedback. One thing, you should be careful about "recycling" older books with leather covers. They are a non-renewable resource. Just because they are not valued now, they are important artefacts which can't be replaced once gone. And in some ways a book that has aged (started to fall apart) is more important for the study of bookbinding history than one that sat on a shelf and never got read. Make sure you look up the WA bookbinders. There is a fairly active group over there and they will be the best way to access used equipment that comes onto the market. The advantage of not being very successful on UA-cam is there aren't so many comments that I can't read most of them:)
Thanks for this really good tool tutorial. I was in bookbinding course 40 yrs ago and learned how many different operations a bookbinding needs. You can't understand it by just watching a book. My wife had a job in a company which imported bookbinding tools and materials so I could buy them easily and in net prices. Still not very cheap as they all were german made.
I need a corner punch and at least they are inexpensive. I totally agree about those kits. I learned the most when I just had a bone folder, scissors, waxed binding thread a knife and PVA. It was a challenge for this weakling to cut the boards Lineco but I needed the exercise. Now I have a metal ruler that allows me to rip the large wc sheets accurately. I haven’t bought the 18” guillotine because I can get pretty accurate. Anyways I learned so much about binding from you and I would so love to pick your mind on specific issues. I think one of the most important things is pressing with enough time and weight after gluing because I had some little tiny bubbles. One really needs to use simple boards and weights. Thank you for sharing your skills. I didn’t allow discouragement to set in because the center binded paper still can be taken out. Anyways I am so happy to be able to make my own beautiful binding, flat lying watercolor sketch books and hope others really tune in to your advice. Thank you!

I bound several very primitive handwritten books as a child. I sewed the signatures with a regular needle and thread.
I had no press, but didn't let that stop me!

Engineer's 1-2-3 blocks are a great tool too. I like to use them for applying additional pressure to my turn-in corners when using thicker fabrics. There are some tiny plastic sewing clips available that can help with applying pressure in tight corners such as slip cases, but they do need a fence to avoid leaving unsightly serration marks. One tool I wouldn't recommend is a rotary cutter. This is a common tool for cartonnage and works well for fine fabrics such as cotton poplin (if you're into making your own bookcloth) but certainly not good for commercial book cloth - for that type of covering a good quality knife + steel edge or tailor's sheers are a must, IMHO.

Dear Darryn, I just bought a proper ruler from Limit. Oh my... the old, shiny, flimsy one feels like a toy in comparison. What a difference!
Lol that ‘basic’ pencil is actually the best quality I’ve ever used, and as an artist I’ve used all kinds of expensive stuff: it’s got a break-resistant lead formula (and I’ve tested that to destruction and never had one break- neither by dropping on concrete nor while sharpening), the graphite lays down beautifully and reliably, the wood is good quality so no splintering even when the sharpener’s blunt, the hexagonal shape stops it rolling off the desk, it comes in the full range of hardnesses from hard-as-nails barely visible to buttery soft jet black, and it’s really cheap. It’s the Staedtler Tradition and I love it!

I tried this years ago and it didn't work well. Plus I'd rather people buy from the specialist bookbinding suppliers.

The Staedtler HB pencil caught my eye the first time I saw you use it. That was the standard pencil for school use over here. (They use a completely different 'standard' for pencils in the USA and Canada. Or so I've been told.)

i was looking online for wrapped book binders' bricks when one independent brick supplier i contacted said they didn't make them anymore but they were willing to let me put in a special order. it seemed a little pricey at first but for $75 a brick before shipping & handling i'll be able to get into book binding without splurging on too much fancy equipment :)
I didn't know Jeff Peachey sold wrapped bricks. Make sure to get archival conservation grade bricks:) DAS

At the weekend i visited a reclamation yard, there was a W.E. Cook guillotine, two presses a Harrild and son and the other an Albion (i would describe these as what Caxton might have used) and 2 letterpress machines the smaller of which seemed intact with the rubber rollers, if i had a few quid i would have bought the lot, but judging by the items that were priced I guess they would have been top dollar. all these were outside going rusty. Where they got them from one can only guess - stay safe
OMG, I would have thought any Albion in any condition would be worth saving. But restoring a rusty letterpress is a huge undertaking.
I absolutely love your videos, they are so informative. One thing I struggle with - is there some kind of formula for working out the gap between the spine and cover, and the width of the cover in relation to the text block? I keep my end papers are too tight 😏
For a medium sized book use 7mm and only go up or down a mm or so for significant size changes. I guess mainly board thickness and thickness of book. Maybe don't press in the groove after casing in so the endpapers are not adhered right up to the shoulder. I'm assuming we're talking about a square back case binding. The backbone of the book needs to throw up and it can only do that if the shoulders can move into the book. How the square back works is complex. This gives me an idea for a video. All the best, DAS

My quirkiest weight is a small (non-functioning) cast bronze cannon my grandad found while clearing out his shed.
I've saved some old encyclopedias to use as weights. I call them old school wikipedias. :p I really like iBookBinding's collection of old irons (for ironing clothes) that he uses as weights.

Excellent video! I'd add a hammer to the list of beginner tools. You can't really do rounding or backing the spine without a hammer. Of course not all books need a rounded spine. It's difficult to know where to draw the line of what are "beginner" tools and what are not.
I hope you had a relaxing holiday. ^_^ I made two coptic stitch books as Christmas presents. In one of them I used waterproof materials (Rite in the Rain -paper and some plastic flooring carpet as the covers), so the book can be used outside in any weather, at least in theory. I didn't have time to test it out.
In the description I say I drew the line at backing. Though originally a hammer and couple of other tools were in the video, but they got cut when I also removed all materials. New Years resolution is to keep videos under 20 minutes:) All the best, DAS
@@DASBookbinding oh, I only skimmed the description so I missed that. You can always make a part two of this video about beginner materials. Now that I think back to when I first started book binding, it was actually more difficult to know what materials I should buy, because there are so many options. Shopping for tools is fun. Shopping for materials is still a bit of a head ache, especially as a non-native English speaker.

The pamphlet bindings are a good spot to start. For more advanced projects my favourite for people starting out are the sewn-board bindings. They aren't rounded and backed, but have lots of other great features. Have fun! DAS

May I ask what would you prefer to trim fabric, bookcloth and cardstock - a rotary cutter or a large pair of scissors? Or both? I find it difficult to cut in a straight line with good scissors, and my craft knife is iffy on cotton fabric. Or maybe I just need practice since I'm an amateur =)
I use a knife for just about all flat goods. You need a good knife and blade. My favourites are the Olfas followed by the 3M ones. A good ruler too. I sometimes use scissors for leather and large bolts of cloth.
Ever tried a bamboo bone folder? Does it work just as well?
Not a folder but I have experimented with making thin lifting tools with bamboo. Jeff Peachey uses it to make tools. All the best, DAS
Is the bone folder made from whale bone, and is it the same tool as ceramic artists use for smoothing pots etc?
No, cow bone. I'm not sure what ceramic artists use. But anything hard and smooth can be used as a paper folder. DAS
@@DASBookbinding Many thanks. I asked because there isn't a crafts shop near me only a store which supplies ceramic artists but also has a fine arts section, and they showed me this tool as a possible paper folder, but I wasn't sure.
I have heard it is possible to use cedar bark to make covers on books DAS do you have any leads as to where i could find videos about it? the one i had saved to playlist previously the person has either deleted their video or made it private and you were one of the first channels that had videos about covers but bark was not a subject i saw so i decided to watch your newest video ask in its comments.
Hi Trevor, You can glue just about anything to the cover of book, but how do you make it function as a book - something that can be put on a shelf between other books? Assuming the bark is fairly flat I might make a case with an inset area where the bark would go. You can make an inset area that is almost the whole board - just a narrow margin around the edges. An expanded version of what I do for the cloth patch in the rounded and backed Bradel binding. Glue the bark into the inset area and then maybe coat it with something protective. Just an idea. Sorry I haven't done anything like this. Good luck! Darryn
@@DASBookbinding thanks the previous video i bookmarked they wraped it like a sheet of leather before you turn the edges in so it crossed the spine and the vertical stripes of the bark were horizontal on the cover but thanks for letting me know you haven't worked with it before. hope you are doing well in the chaos the world is falling into lately
Which brand book binding glue you will recommend?
I don't know where you are. I use an EVA called Evasol. But I don't think it is available outside Australia. In the UK I'd recommend Evacon. Unless you are doing conservation work I think any PVA or EVA designed for use with paper would be fine. Darryn

I noticed you don't have a bookbinding hammer on the list. Are they not necessary, or is there an alternative, such as a carpenters hammer? Also, in another video you demonstrated that a chisel can be used in the place of a plough, yet you don't have a chisel on the list. Is this because knives work well enough for ploughing?

I think I mention in the video I drew the line at rounding and backing in terms of what a beginner wold do. And that is the first significant job that will require a hammer. Same for trimming edges. Check the channel guide for a video on backing hammers. I think I mention that old Barnsley No2 cobbler hammers are my favourite. Look for one without pitted face and that the face hasn't;t been ground flat. Need a domed faced hammer for backing. Maybe need is a strong word - it's better. I do have the video where I back a book with a claw hammer just to show it can be done. I'll get to a video on more advanced tools eventually. But it's a more complex list and will be different for different people... Ciao, DAS
How are bookbinding needles different from seeing needles?
They tend to be larger than most needles typically used for cotton or silk and have larger eyes. They also tend to be longer and not as sharp. I find the darning needles that I've starting using are very sharp and cut paper and get caught on it, so I bluntest just a bit with some emery paper. In generally there is only slight differences and you don't need John James needles with the name bookbinding needle. All the best, DAS

For specialty tools I prefer people buy from specialist bookbinding suppliers, and I try and provide links to these smaller (often family owned) companies. For other items and some books I sometimes provide affiliate inks to Amazon and I greatly appreciate the small commission I make. I've been doing this for about 6 weeks now and am about to reach $10:)
