This is the first time I ever heard that Nixon had a drinking problem. Is this well known? I was a child when he was president and never heard any of the adults talking about it.
I was in my twenties at the time, and I did not know that Nixon drank so much. I believe the Media were much more interested in his coverup of politically motivated burglaries, and his foul language when not in public. The Media were much less likely, in those days, to cover personal flaws such as drinking or cussing or sexual misconduct. Though Nixon was never the type to have an affair, whatever other faults he had. But he secretly taped all his meetings, so the cussing was bound to come out, if only as "expletive deleted." Besides, all the other politicians were drinking and smoking too. Though Nixon didn't smoke except the occasional cigar when he was president. Which is kind of amazing, since he smoked cigarettes when he was younger.

I remember G Gordon Liddy saying that the Nixon was level and solid and the stories of his alcoholism were just more leftist slander.

I'm nearly 66, and we lived outside of D.C from 1968-70. It was a WILD time, let me tell you: .50cal machine gun nests at the WH. The Poor People's March. Tens of thousands of anti-war protesters...interesting things for an 11 to 13-year-old to live through.

The Viet Nam war ended in 1975 and Nixon resigned in 1974 so no he didn't end it. And he also started the "war on drugs" which unnecessarly put way too many people in prison.

I didn't know until I got to checking online that those "war games" were actually a show of force to keep the boat people and others fleeing the Viet Cong regulars safe. I was on a WW2 destroyer that was in the Midway group. Yes I know the actual fighting was over before for us before then. I think the war offically was over 04/30/75 because that's when Saigon fell. One of the last families to escape was a South Viet Namese (that don't look like the right spelling but you know what I meant) Colonel that stole a small plane like a Cessna or a similar plane. There was I think 5 people in the plane that was only a 2 seater. He successfully landed that plane on the USS Forrestal. He was low on fuel and way overloaded, the crew on the flight deck had to push a bunch of jets overboard to clear the flight deck for the plane to land. Hollywood should make a movie about that. And thank you for your service also. I was too young to have been a boots on the ground veteran. By the way the USS Forrestal that that families landed is the same Carrier that during the war was in deep water refueling and reloading the jets that when a guy armed a missle without checking for static electricity first and that missle flew into a row of jets that were fueled and armed with the pilots in them doing their checklists to get ready for another sortie. To make a long story a bit shorter the trained firefighters got killed or injured pretty quickly so after that the Navy made firefighting school mandatory in boot camp. That ship burned for four days, thousands killed or injured but still made it back to the States under it's own power.

Well, during the height of Watergate, a foreign ambassador (don't remember whom) asked "What have you Americans done to the greatest foreign affairs expert in American history?" Nixon did that all by himself - because he trusted no one, not even himself. But the difference between Nixon and the Orange Traitor is that, ultimately, Nixon respected the Presidency enough to resign.
