Thanks for another amazing discussion, Merphy, and for indulging me by listening to my recitation of Old Norse! 😁I am enjoying these chats more than I can say!
always happy to have you Philip! And thank you for deepening the impact of the story with your knowledge and experience!
Thanks for continuing to do these Philip! Always love your input in these discussions
These are such fun, educational, and entertaining discussions! Really looking forward to starting VS in December and being able to participate more in the comments.
Thank you so much, Philip, for the education that you bring to us in these videos! They are so much fun and I really like learning about the historical side of the story! And I really feel that your historical knowledge of the story makes the story that much more powerful to me and probably others as well!
Again, thank you so much!
I know some people dislike this change in direction for the story, but god this arc is what turned vinland saga into one of my favourite stories I've ever experienced. It just engages me on such a deep level, and Thorfinn truly begins the character journey that makes him one of the best protagonists ever written in my eyes.
I get both, its a sudden shift of tone, and yukimura is too good at conflicts, but this change is really making it a good fundament to build upon which stil has action but also thorfim really likable and havig to test his vow is really engaging an fun, and has more weight. Like a world iof violence done wel done is good, but trying to be as pacifist, oh hard run, very fun. Especialy as h never really stops to be a warrior but he hasa way harder fight, in the same world.
And that arc i get and felt the prupt, but alsoits nesseary good groundwork to buy how he changes. An canute
@@marocat4749 oh I totally understand if the shift in tone is not to some people's taste, but yeah I love how it transitions the story into a more introspective tale.
@@artofsamlo4216 I like what it does too. It gets way better. It just stops the flow personaly, which i get is nessesary,
@@artofsamlo4216 And i respect anyone who weeds from a story to set clear, nah, thats what its realy about. So its good. And upon the end i see that its nessesary and why.
Some people dislike it because they are not ready for VS
me and my homies about to drop that old vikings poetry with MC PChase
Fans generally call this arc “Farmland Saga”, if you’re trying to decide on a name.
listening to Phillips niche knowledge on the history yukimura dramatizes is so surreal. I feel like it goes to show how devoted and in love makoto sensei is with his characters and world!
OK WE'RE FINALLY HERE. Cant express how much I appreciate these discussions and I'm so excited to see Philip experience this masterpiece of an arc
Yes! It feels like being in a MUCH more interesting history class! I absolutely love it!
I so appreciate Philip's knowledge about Vikings, it makes the story so much better
Anyway, I hope you watch Mushishi too
Agree totally! The historical knowledge he brings to the discussions really brings them to the next level! Do not get me wrong, the discussions about the story are great on their own, but when he brings the history in … Oh man! 👻😁
Ooooh, that's pretty cool, but I'm not sure how they're gonna feel about Mushishi since it's such a different story, maybe Vagabond would be more similar in tone and genre? Idk
@@G.F.SF55 True, I am mostly suggesting Mushishi to Merphy alone judging by her tastes
My favorite cross over conversations in booktube history
Yes!
Big like for the old Norse ❤
If I’d learn all the languages I most certainly wouldn’t have enough words to describe how much this is loved by me
I have a feeling I will be going on a huge Vinland Saga kick in December! I am all for it!
Waited for this one, best duo!
Loved your discussion. I really felt the theme of the meaning of masculinity. I've known some Olmar's in my life, and I felt sorry for him, and simultaneously wanted to pop him in the mouth. I guess I'm not as over my school-age trauma as much as I'd like to think! Also super-relatable was the farm work. I have a stand of trees in my backyard that I don't want there and I've been cuttng them down and digging up the stumps. What I would give for a big strong horse!
I am so excited about finally starting this series in December! It has been so hard to wait!
@@britneynicole8903 I hope you love it as much as I have!
@@Dougeb7 Thank you so much!
Regarding the runes on the cover: I came across this youtube video earlier called "appreciating little historical details in vinland saga" by Red Bard and she mentioned that she had consulted with dr. Roderick Dale, who designed the runes for the cover and the book plate inside, and indeed his name is mentioned in the book credits. He is mentioned as being part of the Centre for the Study of the Viking Age at the University of Nottingham.
I just thought, shouldn't there be new Vinland discussion today, and the notification has appeared.
I think I first heard about it on Philip’s channel!
Goatsaga discussion video will always be great! Belated happy halloween everyone!
Snake is one of my favourite characters in this series
Just his name is cool in itself!! I am excited to learn more about him!
This is one of the best and interesting Vinland saga manga review. That intro was sooo cool!! it's always fascinating and unique to have someone that really knows the inspirational material of the story. I absolutely can't wait for the next books!
Oh the havemal, its genuinly enough relevant and even gies tips how tto be a good host and like, "keep your senses sharp and dont let drinks weaken them, keep you friends dear, but whom you are wary of closer. It even ha a quote its better to be alive and a loose a limb than die in vein.
BTW the havemal is free online.
Philip Chase is a really good guy and knows Johanna also. He really likes" Malazan: Book of a Fallen" so he should encourage you to finish the series. Also, the Esslemont books.😆
And he is so educational and interesting!
Wow, like Murphy said, thank you Philip for giving us that reading at the beginning and also explaining the runes on the covers. I had never even thought about those tunes outside of being decorative for the covers.
I'm so excited that both of you are back and continuing to do reactions to Vinland Saga! Love the way the discussion bounces off of either of you and to see the expertise in the Legends and history the series draws from! I can't wait for the rest of the reactions. Looking forward to it in the coming weeks
I've been waiting for this for so long!
It can be hard to wait!!
@@britneynicole8903 indeed , specially when it's about one of my favorite arcs of all time xD
@@yourdudefromthehood1132 Definitely!
There are some strong «Hamlet»-inspired themes and imagery with Canute/Knut, which is a nice circle to “Hamlet” being inspired by stories of the Danish Viking Prince Amleth!
I always find myself going over certain events or sequences several times because of how clever, fascinating or relatable they are.
Im very glad I discovered Vinland Saga
LETS GET THIS PARTY STARTED
Woop! Woop! 🎉✨👻🎉
I love how Knut's old saying "So King Sweyn is a slave to the crown. I can use the power of the crown right" is back as karma.
By the way, is Arnaise an Adelheid? I am a little confused.
It's so cool how much Phillip brings in to the story with his knowledge and ideas, and just the sheer collness factor of him reading that epiphyte in old North is just through the roof!
What books are you guys most excited about starting in the new year? 🤔😁📚
Edit: I have so many books that I am excited about starting that I would not be able to fit all of them in a list!! Woop-woop!
I will put in the highlights. I am very excited to start VS, Mistborn, and the Beartown trilogy! I am also going to check out more Backman books! I read Anxious People I believe around two years ago! I really enjoyed it and I would LOVE to try more of his books!
I have been looking forward to this! Yayy!!
YAY!!!! I’m so glad we are getting more of these videos! I hope we get the whole series, it is just great seeing you two discuss each of these volumes!!!
So hyped so HYPED for this
this Vinland Saga discussions have become my favorite part of you channel 🔥🔥🔥
These videos and manga got me to look into very early medieval history. I usually just look at the late medieval period but very early medieval history is just as interesting
The farm land saga begins
Ooooh! We here!
Finally getting to read these books after waiting for them from the library! So fun to hear your thoughts! Just a side note, It might be different in old Norse but I'm Swedish and we pronounce Kettil/Kättil more or less like shettil (like a shushing sound st the beginning)
After hearing Philip Chase recite that poem right in the beginning of this video I really wonder what he has to say about the pronunciation they choosed in the anime. If you two ever have time I hope you can watch these first seconds of season 2 with him and get to hear what he says about it.
lool at Murphy also calling this the Farmland arc.
I'm hoping you're making extra videos for Vinland Saga and Hunter X Hunter or other manga that you're already finished or up to date with recents chapters or arcs
Videos like Rating the arcs and the characters of both manga, deep dive characters from both manga, best moments of both mangas would great extra videos 😊
Please read the short story "Kumo no Ito" by Ryunosuke Akutagawa.
『One day, Buddha was walking by the lotune day, Buddha was walking by the lotus pond in paradise. There is hell far below, and a man named Kandata can be seen struggling in the pond of blood.
During his lifetime, Kandata was a great thief who committed many heinous crimes such as murder and arson. But even he did one good deed. Considering the life of a small spider on the side of the road, he saved it without stepping on it.
Remembering this, Buddha decided to rescue him from Hell, and threw a spider's thread toward Hell.
When Kandata, who was drowning in the pond of blood, looked up, a single silver thread was dripping down. Thinking that this would get him out of Hell, he grabbed the spider's thread and climbed up with all his might.
Kandata, who was tired from climbing the mountain, was resting by hanging from the middle of the thread because there is a tremendous distance between hell and paradise. But when He looked down, hundreds and thousands of sinners, crawling out of the dark pool of blood and clinging to spider's thread , approached his in a procession. Thinking that the spider's thread would break because it could not bear the weight, Kandata shouted, "Hey, sinners. This spider's thread belongs to me. Get off. Get off!"
Suddenly, the spider's thread snapped right where Kandata was, and he and the sinners fell headlong into the darkness.
Buddha, who was watching the whole thing from above, left the lotus pond with a sad expression on his face.』
Yukimura seeks a way for humans to live beyond the walls of Christianity and Buddhism.
OMG! I just realized that MAPPA chose the perfect song for the ending of the second season, because in both the Epiphyte and the ending is about a man with no love!
Great video as always!
Dr Roderick Dale is the one who made the runes in the manga as highlighted in the new Red Bard video

Cool! Thank you!
Who else wakes up early in the mornings to watch her videos as soon as they are posted? Because I do! 😁✨😸☀️🫢
hearing the disussion on canute makes me want you both to read berserk after vinland saga
I'm Brazilian and unfortunately I don't know the English language, I would like it to have subtitles in Brazilian Portuguese. So I could enjoy the work more.
I'm just waiting for them to react to that one scene (Yup, that one)
I personally agree that thorfinn never bonded with askeladd, but a lot of people think that thorfinns reaction at askeladd dying is grief or sadness. I think that it's more fear of losing the one goal thing that kept him going for years.
Spoil from later arc...
When thorfinn say his last goodbye to Leif, he said goodbye father and we can see Leif Thors and askeladd so i think he really bond with him
50 good minutes
Cant wait till hild and thorfin.
I think you both would like the 86 light novels
What are those about?
Einar is the GOAT
Merphy kept spoiling events from book 6 in this discussion. It was annoying for me as someone who watches each discussion after finishing each book. But good discussion overall.
This discussion felt really messy compared to the other ones
that was my bad. I had a busier morning than I expected and wasn't able to go over the material before hand as a refresher
